DB2 Benchmarks

As of May 22, 2007

On May 21, 2007 IBM announced world record performance result on the transaction processing benchmark using the new IBM POWER6 processors. This TPC-C result with DB2 9 and AIX 5L 5.3 was run on 16 core 4.7GHz POWER6 based IBM System p 570 and delivered a performance of 1,616,162 tpmC with a price performance of 3.54 $/tpmC. This new result of DB2 9 on POWER6 processors set new milestones in TPC-C benchmark history by being the first data server to achieve:

A server with this kind of transactional throughput is an excellent architecture for server consolidation and for implementing large scale OLTP workloads. DB2 9 includes the Self Tuning Memory Manager (STMM) feature free in all DB2 editions which automatically optimizes memory allocations across multiple databases on the same server (this is unique A server with this kind of transactional throughput is an excellent architecture for server consolidation and for implementing large scale OLTP workloads. DB2 9 includes the Self Tuning Memory Manager (STMM) feature free in all DB2 editions which automatically optimizes memory allocations across multiple databases on the same server (this is unique to DB2) making it the ideal data server for workload consolidation.

In addition to TPC-C benchmark result, IBM also announced another world record performance result on the two-tier SAP SD Standard Application benchmark for 16-core running on the SAP ERP 2005 application.

Running DB2 9 and AIX 5L 5.3 on an IBM System p 570 with 16 core 4.7 GHz POWER6 processors, DB2 9 delivered a performance of 8000 SAP SD benchmark users, setting a world record performance result for a 16-core configuration.

This DB2 result demonstrated a scalability of 99.5 % between 8 core 4.7GHz POWER6 running Oracle Database 10g Release 2 and 16 core 4.7GHz POWER6 running DB2 9. However, Oracle Database 10g Release 2 was able to demonstrate only 97% scalability between 4 core and 8 core 4.7GHz POWER6.

This is yet another proof point in the continuation of strong relationship that exists between DB2 and SAP which has culminated in the latest This is yet another proof point in the continuation of strong relationship that exists between DB2 and SAP which has culminated in the latest release of DB2 9 which has been optimized specifically for SAP.

Together these two new benchmark results on IBM's latest POWER6 processors demonstrated unmatched per-core performance and scalability across a variety of workloads.
