DB2 leads several key industry performance benchmarks. But, industry benchmarks are like a game of leapfrog, with vendors often passing one another. A more telling statistic is the overall amount of time a vendor is in the lead. These diagrams were drawn from information on the TPC Web site* and show the numbers of days of leadership in a couple of key industry benchmarks between 1 January 2003 and 28 July 2009. As you can see, in each benchmark, DB2 has significantly more days of leadership than all other vendors combined. This is a testament to the overall superior performance of DB2.

Solitaire Interglobal has conducted very comprehensive empirical research on the availability, scalability, performance, and productivity of DB2 and Oracle Database running on IBM Power Systems. Their research includes over 2,354,000 data points covering more than 4,100 production systems. The Solitaire Interglobal research is released on a yearly basis and their most recent findings found that DB2 maintained a 15.1% - 37% performance advantage over Oracle running on IBM Power Systems for OLTP applications (and even more for BI).

When DB2 outperforms another vendor's database product, it means that you can typically run DB2 on less expensive CPU hardware and enjoy better performance. Of course, this not only saves you expenditure on hardware, it can also potentially reduce the amount you spend on software licenses, software maintenance, and software support.
