FileNet Content Manager supports the DITA data model allowing customers the ability to extend ECM support into component based content management through the following applications.
The evolution of component based content management
Imagine what it is like to create and manage content within an organization like IBM. A vast amount of the content that is generated must be created and published in multiple formats as well as multiple languages. Much of that content is re-used, repurposed, and republished based on product lines. Over the years several standards have evolved to help reduce the cost and overhead for creating updating and publishing content. Below is a list of some of the most significant standards. Many were actually developed by IBM
SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) was the outcome of IBM research starting in the 1960’s when IBM was doing working on a generalized representation of text. Out of that research ANSI introduced the first version of the SGML in 1978 which later became an ISO Standard in 1986 (ISO 8879:1986
HTML (HyperText Markup Language) is one of the first significant SGML spin offs. HTML was developed out of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) by Tim Berner Lee as a means for people in the physics community to communicate.
XML (Extensible Markup Language) is another significant development that originated from SGML. While HTML was designed to help describe how content is displayed XML describes data.
PDF (Portable Document Format). Where HTML and XML dynamically display content via the web, PDF also helps convert paper based content into device independent content that can be delivered via the web but is not dependent on web technology.
HAT (Help Authoring Tool) is yet another popular method of creating on-line content; it’s primarily used by software applications.
DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) is another standard that was originally developed by IBM. It is used today to produce all of the content formats mentioned above.
Why is DITA important and how does IBM ECM support it
DITA is important because it provides a means by which content can be created once then reused and repurposed via all the other formats mentioned above. DITA breaks content into topics that can reused in difference content deliverables. With the introduction of FileNet Content Manager V4.5 IBM ECM supports the DITA Data model allowing customers the ability to extend ECM support into Component based content management through the following applications.
