Analytics is a must

During IBM Performance 2012, hosted by the popular Flemish actor, writer and presenter Kurt van Eeghem, it became even more apparent just how important analytics is for organizations. It enables them to draw insights from the huge volumes of data in their business systems, and from Big Data. With this, they can take smart decisions in difficult times to improve their service provision, efficiency and competitive positions. The large number of visitors to IBM Performance 2012 was proof of just how much thought is being devoted to this challenge.

The difference between winning and losing

In the morning’s plenary session, Professor Gino Van Ossel, of Vlerick Business School, business intelligence specialist Oliver Oursin, and management consulting veteran Frans Bentlage, each proceeded from their own approach to consider the opportunities and possibilities offered by analytics. The high-profile American baseball coach Brian Farley, demonstrated conclusively how analytics makes the difference between winning and losing.

An issue for all departments

Analytics is a subject spanning all departments. This was made abundantly clear during the break-out sessions for various categories of professionals in the afternoon. Financial specialists, marketing and sales people, IT’ers, risk managers and other business professionals: they are all aware that analytics is a significant success factor for their organizations.

During this session financial professionals discovered how they could gain control over the figures with business analytics in a number of ways – from planning, budgeting and forecasting to reporting. There was also closer consideration of the practical applications of business intelligence and performance management. During a hands-on workshop the participants discovered for themselves how to guide a company using business analytics.


During this session business professionals familiarized themselves with various aspects of Smarter Analytics – from optimizing care delivered to patients, to guiding sales performance and keeping information flows under control. How it’s possible to profit from the opportunities offered by Big Data was also considered.


Extensive attention was devoted during this session to tracking down and preventing fraud in the banking sector. How is it possible to use Smarter Analytics to tackle fraud across customer interaction channels, and to get under the skin of criminals to identify fraudulent behavior and stop transactions, instead of simply paying out damages? The participants learned about smart solutions and were brought up-to-speed on the latest developments in real-time behavioral analysis.

Marketing & Sales

It became clear in this session just how marketing and sales professions can improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their activities in any number of ways with business analytics – from targeted direct marketing based on predictions of client behavior, to optimizing the online client experience. There was also consideration of the powerful combination of digital marketing and cross-channel marketing, and the added value of analyzing unstructured data, for example reactions via social media.


IT professionals could get further acquainted with the latest solutions for business intelligence and performance management in this session, along with hands-on experience based on practical stories. The importance of guaranteeing data quality was also revealed, along with how to tackle this effectively.

User Group Meeting IBM SPSS

This gathering for IBM SPSS users provided insights into the possibilities offered by IBM SPSS solutions, from both a business and a product perspective. The topics ranged from retaining clients and building up a complete client picture based on Big Data, to achieving a synchronized process for client interaction. Enhancing and evaluating the reliability of analysis results was also put under the spotlight.

User Group Meeting IBM Cognos

This get-together for IBM Cognos users highlighted the latest opportunities offered by IBM Cognos solutions, both in terms of financial management as well as business analytics and business intelligence – from rolling forecasts and financial consolidation to what if-planning and the possibilities of dynamic data cubes. There was also consideration of the link between IBM Cognos Controller and ERP and other software, and of the right way to migrate to Cognos 10 BI.

User Group Meeting IBM EMM

The roadmap for EMM and NetInsight solutions was among the issues considered in this session for IBM EMM users: what direction are developments taking? Through workshops the participants could also gain first-hand experience with solutions for eMail Marketing and Digital & Interactive Marketing.

Opening keynote - Frans Bentlage

Frans BentlageFrans Bentlage is a veteran in management consulting. He has lead the IBM Benelux Business Consulting unit for several years and in this role he was instrumental in the formation of the Business Analytics & Optimization service line. Frans is now leading one of IBM´s most important growth plays: "Smarter Analytics" in the Benelux. This mission involves the leverage of the full IBM portfolio from Software and Hardware to Consulting and other Services to create the best value for clients. Prior to IBM, Frans was a senior partner in PriceWaterhouseCoopers Consulting specialised in performance management.

Opening keynote - Oliver Oursin

Oliver OursinOliver is the worldwide leader of IBM's Business Intelligence presales people and all product initiatives. In this role he is meeting many of our largest, most strategic clients and partners as well as with analysts and press. With many of our clients and partners he has a long lasting senior management relationship. Oliver came to IBM with the acquisition of Cognos. He is a 15 year veteran of the BI industry. Starting with managing BI projects in a leading German bank, Oliver joined Cognos in 1999 where he assumed multiple roles in services, presales, customer success and the senior management team. Since 2009 he assumed several roles in IBM, like the leadership of all presales personal in EMEA.

The multi-faceted Van Eeghem is known among other things for successful radio and TV programs like ‘Golfbreker’, ‘Kurt & Co’and‘NamenNoemen’.He has also published a number of books including the novel ‘Olga Leeft’and‘Kurtoisie’, a book on etiquette. As moderator Van Eeghem will add an extra dimension to IBM Performance in his own inimitable way.

Closing keynote - Brian Farley

Kurt van EeghemThe keynote speaker at IBM Performance 2012 is thehigh-profile American baseball coach Brian Farley. As coach of the Dutch baseball team he caused a sensation at the 2011 World Cup – the Netherlands became world champions for the very first time by beating the favorites Cuba in the finals. This resulted in Farley being awarded the title, ‘Coach of the Year’. Analytics plays a vital role in the success of Farley and his team. As coach, he uses it to determine the winning factors and to enable his team to perform consistently, even under enormous pressure. Be inspired by his fascinating story!
