Many customers create and maintain VSE applications using VisualAge Generator Developer and use VisualAge Generator Server for VSE in their VSE run-time environment. Others create VSE applications using COBOL/VSE directly. With VisualAge Generator EGL Plug-in for VSE, customers can use Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) to create and maintain VSE applications from the Rational application development environments, including Rational Web Developer (RWD) and Rational Application Developer (RAD). This allows application developers to create new COBOL/VSE programs using the EGL high-level language, rather than native COBOL, as well as develop new Web applications that can be deployed as J2EE applications. In addition, because the Rational developer tools support the creation of Java, J2EE, and portal applications, VA Generator EGL Plug-in for VSE allows you to standardize your application development environment across IBM zSeries and distributed developers. Migration from VisualAge Generator Developer to one of these new application development environments is supported by the Rational products. Installed as a plug-in to RWD or RAD, VisualAge Generator EGL Plug-in for VSE replaces any currently installed EGL COBOL generation capabilities and supports VSE as a target environment. VisualAge Generator Server for VSE is still required on VSE for run-time support. VisualAge Generator EGL Plug-in for VSE provides the following capabilities: - The ability to generate text-based and batch programs that execute on either CICS for VSE or in VSE Batch
- SQL, serial, relative, and indexed data access
- The ability to create back-end logic to execute with the modern Web capability supplied with EGL and the use of Java Server Faces
- New functions provided in EGL (except for those documented in the VisualAge Generator EGL Plug-in for VSE Reference)
