iSeries Web Application Development in WebSphere
Development Studio Client
Scenario Documentation
- iSeries scenario application
This scenario introduces you to WebSphere
Development Studio Client for iSeries Version
5.1. It includes exercises for you to run
and try building parts of an iSeries application.
The scenario is designed for developers wanting
to use an iSeries host for Java development,
Web development, and the management and transformation
of RPG code into Web applications. The application
consists of five .zip files and two .sav
files that you restore onto your iSeries
host. They form a series of Web pages with
URLs for various points in the process.
Prerequisites:
- You need WebSphere Development Studio Client
Version 5.1 installed. You can find service
pack information on the support download
section of our support page. The rest of the prerequisites are
described in the documentation.
Demos
- Web Tools Demo #1

iSeries RPG application. You first see how
to create a Web page. You then set parameters
that allow interaction with the iSeries RPG
program. When run the Web application presents
customer data that resides on the iSeries.
- Web Tools Demo #2 - Subfiles v5.1
In this Web Tools demo #2, you see how we
create a Web browser version of a subfile
to display a list of customers and then display
the details for each selected customer.
- Page Designer Demo
In this demo, you see how the Page Designer
is used to customize plain, static web pages
by adding logos, backgrounds and marquee
text.
Tutorials
- Building an e-business application with RPG
iSeries Web development tools give you the ability to create new e-business applications that use a Web-based front end to communicate with the business logic in an ILE or non-ILE language program residing on an iSeries server. In this tutorial, the user will learn to create the high-level design of your Web site and apply page templates using Web site designer. Then, you will create the individual pages with Page Designer, or generate input and output JSP files with the Web Interaction wizard. You will also add iSeries Web components to your pages, for example, Web equivalents of iSeries command keys, input fields that accept only particular types of data, or output fields such as subfile names.
- Building a Web user interface for a subfile
In this tutorial, you will learn how to display a list of customers, display the details for each selected customer and then update selected customer information. You will learn how to use Page Designer to create a new customer list input page from a subfile. You will then learn how to link this new page to the customer inquiry page that you built in the previous tutorial. Then you will learn how to create new output pages (update record and update complete) using the Web Interaction wizard. You will also learn how to link these pages using the Web interaction wizard. Finally you will learn how to test your new and updated input and output pages in your existing e-business RPG customer inquiry application.
