Numerical Control (NC) manufacturingWith Numerical Control manufacturing (NC manufacturing) solutions you can create numerical control (NC) data from a virtual 3-D model. Information is then used to drive manufacturing equipment that cuts metal to the exact shape of the model. Whether your company needs toolings, prototypes or parts, this solution can help you support more efficient production.

The benchmark

NC manufacturing solutions are based on Dassault Systemes? CATIA. Our solution can be installed as a stand-alone product or as part of an end-to-end product lifecycle management system. The solution is:
  • Supported by IBM middleware?including IBM WebSphere® and IBM MQSeries® ?to provide a state-of-the-art foundation on which to integrate enterprise applications and link business processes.
  • Built on a common component application architecture that promotes information sharing and reuse throughout the product lifecycle.
IBM installation experts can install and customize engineering environments?from hardware and software, to complete network management?whether you have one or thousands of seats, in a single location or sites worldwide.

spacerFeatures and functionality
NC manufacturing solutions provide dedicated modules that address:
  • Lathe machining
  • Prismatic machining
  • Surface machining
  • Advanced machining
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Manufacturing review
  • Manufacturing verification

The features include:
  • Base configurations for shop floor programming and tool path validation by NC supervisor or by NC machine operator.
  • Support for solid and surface modeling as well as IGES and CADAM interfaces.
  • Standardization on a common NC manufacturing environment supported by IBM middleware, including WebSphere and MQSeries, and runs on UNIX® and Microsoft Windows® systems.

The implementation

An Austrian company, specializing in complex mold and dye constructions, depends on a set of large three-axis-milling machines to support their manufacturing process.

The company determined that the solution that best fit their needs was CATIA V5 with the Hybrid-Design configuration (5691-HD2) and a three-axis-milling feature. The company now runs the NC manufacturing solution on a classic Intel-based platform workstation with 512MB RAM and an open GL GPU.

The company uses the system to design and exchange manufacturing data with much higher accuracy than is possible with standard interfaces such as IGES. CATIA V5 has enabled the company to integrate their design and manufacturing processes by eliminating the need to convert data from one format to another.

The cost of ownership

Implementing NC manufacturing solutions can reduce the cost of:
  • Implementation?leverages your previous IT investment by providing support for Windows and UNIX-based operating systems.
  • Training?offers an intuitive interface with graphical feedback, and drag and drop capabilities to shorten learning cycle, training expenses and provide ease-of-use.
  • Manufacturing?lowers programming time by reducing the loss of information when transferring geometry data.
