CATIA V4 Library (LIB)

Overview

CATIA V4 Library (LIB) stores, retrieves and manages geometric components for repetitive use in CATIA models. Component manufacturers may want to share a copy of their libraries with their customers. This library availability encourages customers to use the manufacturers' components in final assemblies. With LIB, users are able to avoid redesigning existing CATIA objects thus increasing productivity and reducing errors.

Features

  • Stores a wide variety of components in an easily accessible library
  • Organizes and manages components by families
  • Provides component search techniques using key words
  • Lets the user control the updating of drawings that reference Library components when the original component is modified
  • Standardizes parts to increase productivity, reduce errors and encourage conformance to company norms
  • Allows a library object to refer to an object from another library

Key customer benefits

  • Supported data types
CATIA V4 Library (LIB) stores a wide variety of 2D and 3D components including:
    • Draw elements
    • Surfaces
    • Wire frames
    • Solid objects
    • Standard geometric components
    • Symbols
    • Numerical control milling and lathe tools and their geometric characteristics
    • Structural cross-section shapes
    • Piping components
    • Schematic layout components

  • Intelligent object storage
LIB objects consist of an identifier, a list of characteristics and a set of components. Library groups objects into families for easier retrieval.Users can select an object by using a guided access method or by referencing the object's name for quicker access. When using the guided access method, users select the object based on key words, alphabetically sorted families or identifier comments for details or symbols.

  • Expedited retrieval
Library handles four categories of key words.Key word data can be originated using three different techniques.Users can assign the key words by manually giving values to the objects, or the system can automatically extract predefined values for section and tool families.A third option allows the administrator to associate a valuation method that the system uses to generate the value according to a user-defined rule.

  • Data link flexibility
When selecting an object from the library, the system nominally retains the link to the master library object. This link allows the user to take advantage of further changes made to the master item.Conversely, the user can drop the link and modify the object. In which case, future changes to the library master would not affect the user's model.

  • Update control
Batch utilities allow administrators to quickly process updates of library components. These utilities globally update all models of a model file.System administrators can determine whether modifications on components in the library affect the entire database.

  • Inter-library communications
The system can use an object from one library as a detail for an object in another library. As a result, the total storage space and maintenance required for a library are reduced.
