Shaping the Future - IBM Germany Development Lab Böblingen

From the "think tank in the countryside" to the High Tech Center of the future that is the best way to summarize nearly 50 years of development at the Böblingen Laboratory.

With nearly 1800 employees, the IBM Germany Development Lab is one of the largest development centers outside the USA.

We develop hardware and software for IBM zSeries and provide the services that allow IBM customers to exploit information technology as an opportunity in a tightly networked world. We are experts in the development of high-performance CMOS microprocessors, IBM eServer hardware and operating systems, pervasive computing, mobile e-business, workflow technologies, business intelligence and system management products. The Boeblingen Lab is one of seven Linux Competence Centers and has the worldwide responsibility for the development of the open source Linux system for the IBM zServer family.

The Böblingen lab is beautifully located in a grove on the outskirts of Böblingen. Just steps away are the IBM Club Germany Headquarters and the "leisure park Zimmerschlag" with tennis courts, mini golf an artificial climbing rock and several restaurants.

The Böblingen county consitutes the south-western part of the greater Stuttgart area - which is one of the biggest industrial areas of Germany. Beside the well-known Car Industry (namely Daimler-Chrysler and Porsche) there are a lot of high tech companies which leads some people to refer to the area as the "Silicon Valley of Germany".

Besides the twin cities of Böblingen and Sindelfingen and the big city of Stuttgart (with 500.000 Inhabitants) there are several smaller cities, like the historical university town Töbingen and Ludwigsburg - which is famous for his 18th century Residential Palace - to visit. The whole area is very well connected with the Stuttgart Mass Transportation System (VVS) which offers Subways, Trains and Busses on a 30 minute (or even shorter) schedule from early in the morning till late.

Stuttgart offers many cultural highlights like the award-winning opera house, the Musical and Entertainement Center Stuttgart International, its world famous zoo "Wilhelma" and the various pubs and shops in the pedestrian area. During summer time there are many open air concerts and festivities ranging from so called "Hocketses" in the surrounding small towns to big events like the Stuttgart "Sommer Fest" or the Weindorf, which lasts for more than a week. There are also plenty of other sights to discover within a day-trips range - like the Black Forest, Lake Constance, Switzerland and Strassbourg (France).

Student quote

"The lab environment allowed us to exchange ideas freely beyond the bounds of the individual teams, while also providing productive work environment, free of distractions."
