Abstract

The IBM 1818 expands the midrange disk storage offerings of high-performance, high availability, business-critical storage solutions with the IBM System Storage DS5000 series.

Model abstract 1818-51A

The IBM DS5100 Model 51A is a high-performance storage controller. The DS5100 storage controller is packaged in a 4U rack-mountable enclosure and has dual-active RAID controllers that operate at 4 Gbps or 8 Gbps FC speeds and 1 Gbps speed for attachment to iSCSI hosts.

The DS5100 offers modular host ports that provide a choice of eight or sixteen FC host ports (four or eight ports per RAID controller); or four or eight iSCSI host ports (two or four ports per controller); or a combination of eight FC host ports and four iSCSI host ports (four FC host ports and two iSCSI host ports per controller). The FC host port cards come with the appropriate number of pluggable, shortwave SFP transceivers to populate the host ports.

The DS5100 is designed with sixteen disk expansion ports for attachment of EXP5000 Storage Expansion Units and EXP5060 High Density Storage Enclosures. Shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers are used to populate the disk expansion ports. The DS5100 must have a minimum of eight and a maximum of sixteen expansion ports populated. Users must populate the disk expansion ports using Shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceiver pair feature (#2412) which provides two SFP transceivers and populates two disk expansion ports.

The DS5100 comes with base support that enables attachment of up to 16 EXP5000 expansion units. The DS5100 with requisite attachment features installed can attach up to 28 EXP5000 storage expansion units providing up to 896 TB storage or up to 8 EXP5060 high density storage enclosures that can provide up to 960 TB physical storage capacity.

The IBM DS5300 Model 53A is a high-performance storage con-troller. The DS5300 storage controller is packaged in a 4U rack-mountable enclosure and has dual-active RAID controllers that operate at 4 Gbps or 8 Gbps FC speeds and 1 Gbps speed for attachment to iSCSI hosts.

The IBM EXP5000 is a high-capacity Storage Expansion Unit. The EXP5000 is packaged in a 3U rack-mountable enclosure that houses 16 drive bays. The EXP5000 can house up to 16 Fibre Channel or SATA disk drives or a combination of both types of drives. The EXP5000 at-taches to the IBM DS5100 and DS5300 controllers to build physical storage configurations of up to 896 TB using 2 TB SATA disk drives or up to 268.8 TB using 600 GB FC disk drives. Up to 28 EXP5000 expansion units, that houses up to 448 disk drives, can be attached to the DS5100 and DS5300 storage controllers. The EXP5000 attaches to DS5000 controllers and other disk expansion units via four 4 Gbps drive ports. The drive ports must be populated with shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers to enable the ports. The EXP5000 ships with two ports already populated. If the configuration requires all drive ports to be populated, SW 4 Gbps SFP transceiver feature (#2412) containing two transceivers, must be ordered to populate the other two ports

Model abstract 1818-G1A

The IBM EXP5060 is a High Density Storage Enclosure. The EXP5060 is packaged in a 4U, rack-mountable 60 SATA disk enclosure containing 5 drive trays, each drive tray holds 12 SATA disk drives. Up to 8 EXP5060 storage enclosures can be attached to the DS5100 and DS5300 controllers to form storage configurations containing up to 480 SATA disk drives. The EXP5060 storage enclosures can be attached to a single DS5100 or DS5300 to form storage configurations of up to 960 TB using 2 TB SATA disk drives. The EXP5060 attaches to DS5000 controllers and other disk expansion units via four 4 Gbps drive ports. The drive ports must be populated with shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers to enable the ports. The EXP5060 ships with two ports already populated. If the configuration requires all drive ports to be populated, SW 4 Gbps SFP transceiver feature (#2412) containing two transceivers, must be ordered to populate the other two ports.

Description

The System Storage DS5000 series disk system is IBM's midrange disk offering, specifically designed to meet the needs of midrange/departmental storage requirements, delivering high performance, advanced function, high availability, modular and scalable storage capacity, with SAN-attached 4 Gbps and/or 8 Gbps FC connectivity and optionally 1 Gbps iSCSI host connectivity, as well as support for RAID 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, and 10. The DS5100 and DS5300 controllers with optional attachment features can support up to 480 TB physical storage capacity.

The DS5000 series is designed to deliver up to a two-fold IOP performance increase over the current generation DS4800 offerings and represents the seventh-generation architecture within the midrange disk family.

DS5000 series members

The DS5000 series offering consists of the DS5100 and DS5300 high-performance storage controllers, EXP5000 storage expansion unit, and the EXP5060 high density storage enclosure. DS5100 and DS5300 controllers come packaged in 4U rack-mountable enclosures and have dual-active RAID controllers that operate at 4 Gbps or 8 Gbps FC speeds and 1 Gbps speed for attachment to iSCSI hosts.

The EXP5000 is a high-capacity 16-drive bay expansion unit packaged in a 3U rack-mountable enclosure. The EXP5000 is designed to accommodate up to sixteen FC drives or encryptible FC drives or SATA drives or a mix of the three types of disk drives. The EXP5060 high density enclosure is designed to accommodate up to 60 SATA disk drives and is packaged in a 4U rack-mount enclosure.

The DS5100 and DS5300 controllers attach up to 28 EXP5000 Storage Expansion Units, supporting configurations up to 448 FC or Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) disks. This can yield configurations of up to 448 TB of physical storage using 1000 GB SATA drives. If the DS5100 is the controller and the configuration will exceed 256 disk drives, the DS5100 Attach up to 448 disk drives feature (#7371) must be installed.

The DS5000 series provides further investment protection with the ability to attach DS4000 EXP810 Expansion Units (upon approval via RPQ) or a combination of EXP5000s and EXP810s. This provides a rich set of upgrade paths to extend the DS4000 series installed base of EXP810s, while gaining the modular scalability and high performance built into the DS5000 family.

A DS5100 or DS5300 controller can also attach up to 480 SATA disk drives via attachment of up to eight EXP5060 High Density Enclosures (when neither the EXP5000 or EXP810 expansion units are part of the configuration). The DS5100 controller must have the Attach up to Eight EXP5060s feature (#7372) to gain support for attachment of 480 SATA drives. Additionally, the DS5100 controller must also have the Attach up to 448 disk drive feature (#7371) as a prerequisite to feature (#7372) for attachment of 480 SATA drives. The DS5300 controller must have the Attach up to Eight EXP5060s feature (#7373) to gain support for attachment of 480 SATA disk drives.

Intermixing of EXP5060 enclosures, EXP5000 enclosures and EXP810 enclosures attached to a DS5100 or DS5300 controller is supported, but limited to a configuration of up to 448 drives or less. Additionally, if the DS5100 is the controller and the configuration will exceed 256 disk drives, the Attach up to 448 disk drives feature (#7371) must be installed on the DS5100.

To gain support for attachment of the EXP810 Expansion Unit to a DS5000 series controller, customers must submit an RPQ request using the normal RPQ Request process.

As part of the DS5000 series functionality, the DS5000 controllers and EXP5000 expansion units are designed to support integration and use of up to 448 high performance Fibre Channel or SATA disk drive modules (DDMs), or a combination of both types of drives up to a maximum of 448.

A 73 GB Solid State Disk Drive (SSD) feature (#5580) is available for DS5000 series. This high-performance SSD is available for use in the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit and can be intermixed with other SATA and FC disk drives. Up to 20 SSDs are supported in DS5000 configurations where multiple EXP5000 expansion units are attached to a DS5100 or DS5300 controller.

The EXP5000 Expansion Unit also offers optional Encryption Capable Fibre Channel disk drive features as a choice of disk drive type that can be installed, along with existing Fibre Channel, SATA, and solid state disk drive options.

The Encryption Capable Fibre Channel disk drives are designed to encrypt data automatically as it enters the drive to be stored, and then automatically decrypt it as it moves out of the drive. The embedded encryption engine helps to ensure that there is no performance degradation compared to non-encrypting drives. This drive-level encryption approach reduces the risk that information could be compromised when storage media are physically removed from the storage systems.

Current offering of encryption-capable FC disk drives for the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit include:

DS5100 and DS5300 disk systems must be at firmware level 07.50 or later to enable support and use of optional Encryption Capable Fibre Channel disk drives features (#5520 - #5543). Also, DS5100 and DS5300 disk systems must purchase and apply the Disk Encryption Activation feature (#7358), in order to enable encryption key management capabilities, which is required to turn-on and turn-off disk encryption on individual encryption capable drives and/or groups of encryption capable drives.

DS5000 modular, flexible, and scalable architecture

The DS5300 (1818-53A) and DS5100 (1818-51A) controller models come in 4U rack-mountable enclosures that house redundant, dual-active intelligent RAID controllers designed to provide high availability, and allow modular addition of host port and cache memory building blocks.

The EXP5000 (1818-D1A) storage expansion unit is packaged in a 3U rack-mountable, high-capacity 16-drive bay enclosure containing dual switched 4 Gbps ESMs, dual power supplies, and redundant cooling. EXP5000s connect to DS5000 controllers via high-speed 4 Gbps FC disk expansion ports and have a physical storage capacity of up to 16 TB per enclosure, using 1000 GB SATA DDMs (disk drive modules) and up to 9.6 TB per enclosure, using 600 GB FC DDMs.

The EXP5060 (1818-G1A) high density enclosure is packaged in a 4U rack-mount enclosure designed to accommodate up to 60 SATA disk drives. The EXP5060 contains 5 drive trays, each drive tray holds up to 12 SATA disk drives for a total disk drive capacity of up to 60 SATA drives per enclosure. The storage capacity of the EXP5060 is 60 TB using the 1000 GB SATA DDMs. The EXP5060 enclosure contains dual switched 4 Gbps ESMs, dual power supplies that are powered by 200-240 V ac power sources, and also contains redundant cooling components. EXP5060s connect to DS5000 controllers and other expansion units via their 4 Gbps disk expansion ports.

The DS5000 modular architecture helps to address the requirement for high-performance storage solutions, providing flexibility, scalability, and investment protection. A design feature of the architecture is to allow for an increase in the number of host ports over time, as well as add or change host port types as higher-speed host ports or industry standards-based protocol host port types are introduced. Currently, the DS5000 series controllers offer options of eight and sixteen FC host ports (four FC ports per controller or eight FC ports per controller). Additionally, options for four or eight iSCSI host ports (two iSCSI ports per controller or four iSCSI ports per controller) are also available on the DS5000 controllers. For added flexibility, customer can also have a combination of eight FC host ports and four iSCSI host port on the DS5100 or DS5300 controller.

Modular cache memory building blocks allow the DS5000 series to meet initial requirements, while providing the means to add more cache memory as needs dictate over time. Currently, the DS5000 series offer 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB cache memory options.

Additionally, the DS5100 offers further value in flexibility, scalability, and investment protection with the optional DS5100 Performance Upgrade. The DS5100 provides excellent performance for dynamic storage consolidation solutions beginning deployment stage, with the full assurance that this model can be upgraded to full DS5300 performance level if required.

The DS5100 Performance Upgrade option is designed to provide enhanced storage server processing capability internally within the DS5100 controller. With the DS5100 Performance Upgrade option applied, the DS5100 is designed to provide the equivalent storage server processing capability as the DS5300.

DS5000 advanced functions

Advanced storage management, copy service options, and optional advanced disaster recovery functions are available for the DS5000, including DS Storage Manager, Storage Partitions, FlashCopy, VolumeCopy, Enhanced Remote Mirroring, and Enhanced Remote Mirror - 64-128 Mirror Upgrade.

DS Storage Manager is the storage management platform for both the DS5000 and DS4000 midrange disk series. The DS Storage Manager is designed to provide administrators with a powerful, yet easy-to-use management interface, where all tasks, including configuration, reconfiguration, expansion, maintenance, and performance tuning, are designed to be performed with no system downtime and no interruption to system I/O. The DS Storage Manager flexibility includes the ability to manage RAID levels, segment sizes, volume group sizes, volume characteristics, and cache policies.

The DS5000 is designed to enable from 8 up to 512 storage partitions, to allocate storage capacity, maximize storage space, and reduce hardware and storage management costs. Customers will need to select one of the storage partition options in their initial plant order, and may upgrade to increase the number of storage partitions using the appropriate activation feature. Upon activation of the optional storage partition features, the DS Storage Manager enables management of a single midrange disk storage system to function as multiple, logical storage systems to meet the needs of storage consolidation in heterogeneous environments.

The DS Storage Manager enables management of DS5000 advanced copy services features such as FlashCopy to instantaneously create capacity-efficient, point-in-time volume images, providing a logical volume for such uses as file restoration and backup. In contrast, VolumeCopy creates a complete physical copy -- or clone -- of a volume within a storage system. This unique entity can be assigned to any host and used for application testing or development, information analysis, or data mining.

The Enhanced Remote Mirroring feature consists of Global Mirror with Asynchronous Write-order Consistency (critical for mirroring multi-LUN applications), Global Copy with Asynchronous, and Metro Mirror with Synchronous (up to 128 mirror pairs with the optional DS5000 Enhanced Remote Mirror - 64-128 Mirror Upgrade).

DS5000 Disk Encryption Activation

The DS5100 and DS5300 controllers now have the capability to activate disk encryption in conjunction with the new Encryption Capable Fibre Channel disk drives available for the use in the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit. The Disk Encryption Activation feature (#7358) provides entitlement, encryption key management capability, and support for DS5000 systems that have EXP5000 expansion units with encryption capable FC disk drive installed. The DS5100 and DS5300 disk systems must be at firmware level 07.50 or higher to enable support and use of the Disk Encryption Activation feature (#7358).

DS5000 host kits

For attachment to host servers, at least one of the following optional host kit features must be ordered during initial order of the DS5000 disk system. The host kits for the DS5000 contain DS Storage Manager and depending upon the host kit selected, includes licensed IBM Machine Code to support attachment to host servers running Microsoft Windows, System P running AIX, System p running Linux, Power Systems running IBM i OS 6.1, Sun/Solaris, HP/HP-UX, and other Intel-based servers.

Limitations

Before powering up the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit, follow the installation and setup instructions provided with the unit. The EXP5000 requires a minimum number of disk drive modules disk drive modules be installed in the unit before powering up. Refer to the EXP5000 Storage Expansion Unit installation and setup instructions shipped with the machine for details.

The DS5100 and DS5300 controllers must be at firmware level 07.60, or later, to enable support for the new enhancements.

Customers must submit an RPQ request using the normal RPQ Request process to gain support for attaching EXP810 Storage Expansion Units to DS5000 controllers.

DS5000 Novell Netware Host Kit feature (#7732), provides entitlement and support for supported servers hosting Novell Netware, operating with DS5100 and DS5300 controllers having controller firmware levels up to 07.50. Customers must submit an RPQ request using the normal RPQ Request process to gain support for Novell Netware operating with DS5100 and DS5300 controllers with firmware level 07.60, or later.

A maximum of 20 SSDs are supported installed in EXP5000 expansion units attached to a DS5100 or DS5300 controller.

The optional 1 Gbps iSCSI host ports feature for the DS5100 and DS5300 controllers is connected to the host server using Category 5E or Category 6 Ethernet cable. This cable must be supplied by the user.

Fiber optic cable options 5601, 5605, and 5625 provide 50 micron fiber optic cables with "length - bandwidth product" rating of (500 Km/Fibre Channel link speed in MHz), which translates to support for fiber optic cable lengths up to 250 meters for 2 Gbps Fibre Channel, up to 125 meters for 4 Gbps Fibre Channel, and up to 62.5 meters for 8 Gbps Fibre Channel. These distances reflect the rating for the fiber optic cable only, within a cable installation design.

Fiber optic cable options 5810 and 5818 provide high-bandwidth 50 micron fiber cable with "length - bandwidth product" rating of (2000 Km/Fibre Channel link speed in MHz), which translates to support for fiber optic cable lengths up to 500 meters for 4 Gbps Fibre Channel and up to 250 meters for 8 Gbps Fibre Channel. These distances reflect the rating for the fiber optic cable only, within a cable installation design.

Note that fiber optic cables are provided as an accommodation to customers to help connect the storage array to the nearest patch panel or SAN switch. Customers are responsible to ensure that the overall end-to-end fiber optic cable infrastructure is suitable for the corresponding industry standard communication protocols and link speeds.

Before powering up the EXP5060 High Density Enclosure, follow the installation and set-up instructions provided with the unit. The EXP5060 requires a minimum number of disk drive modules be installed in the unit before powering up. Refer to the EXP5060 High Density Enclosure installation and setup instructions shipped with the machine for details.

The EXP5060 High Density enclosure is designed to be powered from 200-240 V ac power sources. For those installations that require the EXP5060 to be directly connected to wall power outlets that will supply 200-240 V ac, country-specific wall outlet power cords are available by selecting the appropriate optional feature (#98xx). Two power cords are included with each country-specfic power cord feature for the EXP5060 enclosure. Only one country-specific feature can be ordered with each EXP5060. For additional information on the various country-specific wall outlet power cords available for the EXP5060, refer to the DS5000 Midrange Disk System sales manual.

When EXP5060 enclosures are to be plant or field integrated into the IBM 2101 Model 200 Storage Solutions Rack, the rack must be configured with PDU power cords rated for 240 V ac electrical service using either of rack power cord options 9491, 9492, 6491, or 6492. This will enable the 2101-200 Rack to be connected to the appropriate power sources in the data center. Refer to the 2101 Model 200 Rack sales manual for details.

The Ruggedized Rack feature (#6080) on the 2101-200 Rack is not designed to handle the weight associated with the EXP5060 High Density Enclosure. The EXP5060 is not supported or allowed for installation into a 2101-200 Rack which has the Ruggedized Rack feature, and the Ruggedized Rack feature is not supported or allowed for installation on a 2101-200 Rack which have EXP5060s integrated.

The EXP5060 Quick Start Guide describes the basic procedures for installing, cabling, and configuring the EXP5060 storage expansion enclosure. Specifically note, due to the weight of the storage enclosure as shipped, a lift tool and a minimum of two trained service technicians (IBM SSRs) are required for installation. The Attach Up To Eight EXP5060 Enclosures feature (#7372) or (#7373) provides support for a maximum disk drive configuration of 480 SATA drives installed in eight EXP5060 Enclosures attached to a DS5100 or DS5300 controller, respectively. Note, application of this feature results in a disruptive controller re-boot operation; therefore, if the intended purpose of the DS5000 storage configuration is to only use EXP5060s with SATA drives and over time attain the 480 maximum supported number of SATA disk drives, it is recommended to select and apply the Attach Up To Eight EXP5060s feature (#7372) or (#7373) during the time of initial system installation. This will help to avoid a disruptive controller re-boot operation after the system has been deployed and additional EXP5060 Enclosures are prepared for attachment.

The Attach up to Eight EXP5060s feature (#7372) or (#7373) provides authorization and support to attach up to eight (8) EXP5060 expansion units to a DS5100 or DS5300 controller respectively, providing support for up to 480 SATA disk drives. Upon activation of feature 7372 or 7373, the DS5100 or DS5300 controller only recognizes and attaches to EXP5060 Enclosures, which only uses SATA drives. DS5000 systems, which migrate attachment from a mixture of EXP5000, EXP5060, and/or EXP810, and migrate to EXP5060 only attachment, will need to apply feature 7372 or 7373 and controller re-boot operation in order to attain the 480 maximum supported number of SATA disk drives.

When configuring the maximum of eight EXP5060 High Density Enclosures, care must be taken to order the correct number of Shortwave 4 Gbps SFP Transceiver Pair (#2412) and Fiber Optic Cables (#5601, #5605, or #5625). When configuring eight EXP5060s (daisy chaining and trunking will be used), a quantity of two Shortwave 4 Gbps SFP Transceiver Pairs (#2412) must be ordered for each EXP5060 within the configuration. Likewise, when configuring eight EXP5060s, a quantity of eight Fiber Optic Cables (#5601, #5605, or #5625) must be ordered for each EXP5060 within the configuration. Refer to the EXP5060 installation guide on how best to determine the cable lengths required when configuring eight EXP5060s.

The DS5100 controller base machine supports attachment of up to 256 drives. The Attach up to 448 disk drives feature (#7371) is a required prerequisite which must be installed first, before installing feature #7372 to gain support for attachment of 480 SATA disk drives.

The DS5300 controller base machine supports attachment of up to 448 drives. The DS5300 Attach up to Eight DS5060s feature (#7373) can be installed directly onto the DS5300 controller base machine to gain support for attachment of 480 SATA drives.

The DS5000 IBM i Host Kit feature (#7735) is supported with DS5300 and DS5100 controllers at firmware level 07.60, or later operating with IBM Power Systems (POWER6) (rack/tower systems only, no Power Blade support) while hosting IBM i OS 6.1 with 6.1.1 machine code. Refer to the DS5000 Interoperability Matrix for specific details on supported operating system levels, prerequisites, and required attachments.

The DS5100 and DS5300 disk systems must be at firmware level 07.60, or later, and the host server must be at DS Storage Manager level 10.60, or later, to enable support for the 600 GB FC disk drive and 600 GB encryption-capable FC disk drive features. The Disk Encryption Activation feature (#7358) is a required prerequisite to turn on and enable support for encryption-capable Fibre Channel disk drives.

The two dual port cards provide a total of four 1GbE host ports (2 ports per internal RAID controller). Each of the four ports has an industry standard RJ-45 connector. The 1 Gbps iSCSI host ports are connected to host servers using Category 5E or Category 6 Ethernet cable.
