Description

Cost-effective resource utilization

In today's highly competitive business environment, it is more important than ever to fully utilize your resources, from hardware to personnel. WebSphere Application Server, V5.1 greatly improves your ability to leverage your assets. Features such as Access Intent, Optimistic Concurrency, and In-Memory Replication of Session State help lower costs.

Centralized administration

As your business needs change, you can quickly and easily move from one configuration to another using WebSphere Application Server, V5.1. Automating your operations becomes easier through scripting, using languages like Jacl to mimic the flow of user administration. Standard JMX interfaces are available to enable you to manage your operations and applications more effectively.

Rich J2EE implementations

SDK 1.4 support enables you to use Java technology to develop more demanding business applications with less effort and in less time. New functions within the core SDK 1.4 platform save developers time by helping eliminate the need to write custom code. This allows developers to use a single technology to develop, test, and deploy end-to-end enterprise applications and solutions.

In addition to SDK 1.4, WebSphere Application Server's J2EE V1.3 support helps simplify enterprise applications by basing them on standardized, modular components. Comprehensive services handle many details of application behavior automatically, with little complex programming. J2EE V1.3 offers simplified business integration via J2EE connectors and JMS. Included are full J2EE implementations with robust enterprise Java implementations built in and a comprehensive range of Java-based APIs and protocols. These include:

Messaging integration to improve productivity

The JMS API helps improve programmer productivity by defining a common set of messaging concepts and programming strategies. It helps simplify enterprise development, allowing loosely coupled, reliable, asynchronous interactions among J2EE components and legacy systems capable of messaging. A developer can easily add new behavior to a J2EE application with existing business events by adding a new message-driven bean to operate on specific business events. The JMS provider is a messaging system designed to be compliant with JMS technology that offers a convenient, integrated enterprise messaging transport infrastructure.

Unleash powerful Web services

Create distributed applications developed with disparate tools and architectures over the Web. WebSphere Application Server, V5.1:

WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment provides additional function, including:

Web services gateway helps reduce development costs by making selected services available to different divisions within an enterprise, either outside the firewall or using different protocols. With the Web services gateway, developers and IT managers can "externalize" a Web service so that it can be invoked by users from outside the firewall with the benefit of robust security protection.

High availability

WebSphere Application Server offers deployment options with clustering and failover, enabling high availability of critical enterprise Java applications. Version 5.1 includes improved weighted workload distribution and failover of clustered application servers, isolation of application servers to avoid single points of failure, and a simpler configuration infrastructure for much better coordination and integrity of related changes. The power of first failure data capture means that your application server will be better able to report and analyze problems as they occur.

Enhanced security

Outstanding security is provided through a sophisticated infrastructure and extensive support of open, standards-based Java specifications. WebSphere Application Server, V5.1 supports:

Together, these enable you to implement standards-based security capabilities within your enterprise applications. Additionally, sophisticated enterprise topologies and infrastructure can be implemented by leveraging WebSphere's pluggable security architecture. This includes:

The caching proxy provides plug-in support for Tivoli® Access Manager that allows users to exploit the Access Manager infrastructure, and an LDAP plug-in that allows users to exploit an LDAP-based repository for storing user authentication and authorization information.

Improved performance analysis and application tuning

New enhancements aid in significantly boosting performance:

Autonomic performance maximization features help you make the most of your environment with tuning advice and monitoring capabilities:

Additionally, WebSphere Application Server, V5.1 delivers top-notch performance, providing higher user throughput and scalability:

WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment provides additional functionality, including enhanced workload management and dynamic caching and performance management tools. This distributes workload across multiple servers through sophisticated load balancing and clustering capabilities. Also provided are:

Integrated tools support

WebSphere Application Server is optimized to work with the separately available WebSphere Studio Application Developer, an integrated Java development environment, based on the Open Eclipse framework, that implements Java and Web services applications. Server administration tools include Debugger, Online Trace, and Log Analyzer. WebSphere Application Server includes Struts Framework, which is provided as a convenience for customer application development.

Wide interoperability

Easy to install and use

Package J2EE applications much more easily with the Assembly Toolkit (ATK), available in the V5.0.2 maintenance release of WebSphere Application Server and also now in V5.1:

Enjoy additional usability enhancements and improvements:

Broad database integration

WebSphere Application Server supports the current databases and drivers so that you can take advantage of their new features. Included are DB2®, DB2 Universal Database® (UDB) for iSeries, Informix™, SQL Server, Sybase, Oracle, and Cloudscape. A new, integrated DB2 Correlator with WebSphere Trace provides improved serviceability and better debugging when using WebSphere Application Server with either DB2 or UDB DB2 for iSeries. WebSphere Application Server, V5.1 also extends support to the following databases to further enable you to use your existing assets: new JDBC type 2 driver support for DB2 V8, Sybase 12.5, and Oracle 9iR2 on Linux for IBM eServer zSeries®. For additional information on supported versions, visit:

Extensive platform support

With V5.1, WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment add to their already broad platform support. Consistent capabilities extend across all supported platforms, including:

IBM Business Solutions

IBM Business Solutions, a set of two enterprise Web applications including IBM Telephone Directory and IBM Welcome Page, are available for iSeries servers. These applications provide integrated solutions to common business needs that work with your existing applications, server components, and enterprise data. IBM Business Solutions demonstrate the value of integrated e-business solutions, increase worker productivity, provide services that virtually any business may find useful, and are easy to understand and use.

Web Services Object Runtime Framework

Integrated with WebSphere Application Server for iSeries runtime, Web Services Object Runtime Framework (WORF) enables easy administration and deployment of DB2 UDB Web services. A sample application is provided and easily deployed from the application server's integrated GUI. WORF provides an environment to easily create simple XML-based Web services that access DB2. Using Apache Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) 2.2, or later, and the Document Access Definition Extension (DADX) standards, you can, with minimal knowledge of SQL or XML, specify a Web service.

You can also use DB2 UDB Extenders (5722-DE1) to implement Web services within WORF. The DB2 XML Extender (part of 5722-DE1) consists of a set of stored procedures, user-defined types (UDT), and user-defined functions (UDF) that you can use to store and retrieve XML data using DB2. The DB2 XML Extender allows XML documents to be stored intact, and optionally indexed in side tables, using the XML column access method, or as a collection of relational tables using the XML collection access method.

Feature and interface improvement replacements

In keeping with IBM's commitment to open standards, the Common Connection Framework (CCF) will be replaced with Java Connector Architecture (JCA) in WebSphere Application Server, V5.1. CCF functions will be delivered in this release for migration purposes. IBM recommends customers put migration plans in place to remove application dependencies, and build all new applications on the new, replacement interfaces. IBM will continue to support these replaced interfaces until end of service of this WebSphere release; thereafter, support will be withdrawn.

CCF broke new ground upon release and has significantly influenced the evolution of the now industry-standard JCA. IBM is committed to open standards. Our strategy is to help customers move toward industry standards as they provide the necessary function. IBM recommends that customers put plans in place to complete migration of their CCF applications to JCA within the next three years.

IBM Electronic Services

IBM Global Services has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to put you on the road to higher systems availability. IBM Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides you with an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support on the IBM eServer. You should benefit from greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. IBM Electronic Services is comprised of two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. By using the news page, it enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is a no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM Warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.
