Overview

IBM System Storage™ DS4200 Express Model 7V and EXP420 Storage Expansion Unit that are being introduced today, further expand the IBM DS4000 series midrange disk storage offerings of high-performance, high-availability, business-critical storage solutions.

The combination of the DS4200 Express Model 7V and the EXP420 can provide you with an affordable, high-capacity, high-performance, Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) disk only storage solution. These DS4000 series models are designed to deliver an economical alternative storage solution that supports data archiving, reference data, and near-line storage applications.

The DS4200 Express Model 7V is designed using a high-performance 4 Gbps architecture and comes in a 3U rack-mountable enclosure, that houses redundant, dual-active intelligent RAID controllers supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10.

The DS4200 has an internal physical storage capacity of up to 8 TB using optional DS4200 500 GB SATA Enhanced Value Disk Drive Modules (EV-DDM).

Physical storage capacity can be increased up to 56 TB by attachment of up to six EXP420 Storage Expansion Units, also being announced today. For further details on the EXP420, refer to Hardware Announcement 106-607 , dated August 8, 2006.

Description

DS4200 Express Model 7V

System Storage DS4200 Express Model 7V and EXP420 Storage Expansion Unit are members of the DS4000 series storage products that are designed to address the midrange and departmental storage requirements. These new SATA only disk models deliver high performance with advanced function and high availability for data archiving, reference data, and near-line storage applications.

The DS4200 employs sixth-generation architecture that delivers 4 Gbps Fibre Channel connectivity directly to host servers, SAN fabric, and to the EXP420 Storage Expansion enclosures. For further details on the EXP420, refer to Hardware Announcement 106-607 , dated August 8, 2006.

DS4200 Express Model 7V comes in a compact, 3U rack-mountable enclosure that contains dual intelligent, high-performance RAID controllers. The Model 7V comes with 2 GB of cache memory (1 GB per controller), and accommodates up to 16 EV-DDMs for up to 8 TB internal physical storage capacity.

Connect the Model 7V to host servers and SAN fabric via its host ports, and connect to the EXP420 storage expansion units via its disk drive expansion ports. The Model 7V has four 4 Gbps Fibre Channel host ports and four 4 Gbps Fibre Channel drive ports. You must enable the Model 7V ports by populating them with 4 Gbps small form-factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers. Four shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers are included with the Model 7V shipment group.

Depending on your requirements, you can use the four supplied SFP transceivers to populate the four host ports (two ports per controller), if the configuration does not require EXP420 storage expansion units. Alternatively, you can use the four SFP transceivers to populate two host ports (one port per controller) and two disk expansion ports (one port per controller).

If you need additional connectivity, you can order up to two shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceiver kits (part number 26K7941) for connectivity to all host and drive ports. Each shortwave SFP transceiver kit (part number 26K7941) contains two shortwave 4 Gbps SFP transceivers and populates two host or two drive ports.

You can expand storage capacity by attaching EXP420 storage expansion units for configurations up to 56 TB physical storage capacity. Up to six EXP420 storage expansion units (up to maximum of 112 EV-DDMs) can be attached to the DS4200. DS4200 EXP420 1 to 3 Attachment option (part number 39M5954) enables up to three EXP420 storage expansion units (up to 64 EV-DDMs). The EXP420 4 to 6 Attachment option (part number 39M5957) enables up to six EXP420 expansion units (up to 112 EV-DDMs).

Key features of the DS4200 Express Model 7V include:

DS4200 storage partitions

The DS4200 has advanced storage management and capacity allocation options and comes with two storage partitions. You can select to field upgrade to 4 (part number 42D3254), 8 (part numbers 42D3257 and 42D3260), 16 (part numbers 42D3263 and 42D3266), or 64 (part numbers 42D3269 and 42D3272) storage partitions.

DS4200 host kits

For attachment to host servers, the DS4200 model is shipped with the Windows host kit option. If you want to attach the DS4200 model to host servers running other operating systems, order one of the below host kit options. The host kits contain DS4000 Storage Manager and depending on the host kit selected, includes licensed IBM Machine Code to support attachment to host servers running Microsoft Windows, System p servers running AIX® or Linux, Sun Solaris, HP-UX, and other Intel-based servers.

DS4200 advanced copy service functions

Optional advanced copy services and disaster recovery solutions include FlashCopy option (part number 41Y0743), VolumeCopy option (part number 41Y0746), and Enhanced Remote Mirroring option (part number 41Y0739). The Enhanced Remote Mirroring feature consists of Global Mirror with Asynchronous Write-order Consistency (critical for mirroring multi-LUN applications), Global Copy with Asynchronous, and Metro Mirror with Synchronous (maximum of 32-mirror pairs).

DS4000 Storage Manager

DS4000 Storage Manager V9.16, available for the DS4200, includes the host-based server code with a GUI designed for configuring, monitoring, and managing one or more DS4000 storage systems. It offers a common storage management platform for the DS4000 series. The DS4000 Storage Manager gives administrators a powerful, yet easy-to-use management interface.

The DS4000 Storage Manager allows you to perform configuration, reconfiguration, expansion, maintenance, and performance tuning, while helping you avoid system downtime and interruption to System i™/O. All within a single DS4000 storage system, the flexibility of configuring the DS4000 Storage Manager is designed to let you:

When you activate the optional storage partitioning features, the DS4000 Storage Manager can enable a single DS4000 storage system to function as multiple logical storage systems to help address the needs of storage consolidation in heterogeneous environments.

Additionally, the DS4000 Storage Manager enables management of advanced copy services features such as FlashCopy and VolumeCopy when separately activated.

Compatibility: The DS4200 Express model is attachable to the DS4000 EXP420 Storage Expansion Unit.

Limitations: The Enhanced Value Disk Drive Module (EV-DDM), part number 42D0389 is for use only with the DS4200 Express Model 7V and the EXP420 Storage Expansion Unit. This EV-DDM is not compatible with any other DS4000 series models.

Customer responsibilities

SFP transceiver orders

The DS4200 Express disk system come with four 4 Gbps shortwave SFP transceivers included in its shipment group.

The DS4200 model has four host ports and four drive ports for a total of eight ports for connections to host servers, switches, and storage expansion units.

Each shortwave SFP transceiver populates one host or drive port. Depending on your specific configuration, additional SFP transceivers may be required. Additional 4 Gbps SFP shortwave transceivers are available by ordering SFP transceiver kit (part number 26K7941). This kit contains two SFP transceivers that populate two host ports or two drive ports.

Cable orders

Fiber optic cables

You can order fiber optic cables with the DS4200 system or supply your own. The DS4200 requires fiber optic cables for attachment to host systems and to DS4000 Expansion Units. The fiber optic cables must be multimode (shortwave) 50.0/125 micrometers for distances up to 150 meters at 4 Gbps performance for drive port attachment with the shortwave SFP transceivers (part number 26K7941).

The DS4200 disk system uses the small form factor duplex LC-type connector. This connector is required on the end of all fiber optic cables that plug into the DS4200 host and drive ports. The following shortwave fiber optic cables with duplex LC-type connectors on each end (LC-LC type) can be ordered with the DS4200 or with other DS4000 family products.

Installability: Installation time is approximately 1 hour.

IBM Electronic Services news page provides you with a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used by customers to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.

Terms and conditions

Volume orders: Contact your IBM representative.

IBM Global Financing: Yes

To obtain copies of the IBM Statement of Limited Warranty, contact your reseller or call IBM. In the United States, call IBM at 800-772-2227. In Canada, call IBM at 800-565-3344. IBM options initially installed in an IBM system carry the same warranty period as the system. If installed after the initial system installation, they carry the balance of the system warranty.

Warranty service

Warranty period: Three years

Warranty service: 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, next-business day (NBD) response, IBM on-site limited repair (IOL)

If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. If applicable to your product, parts considered customer replaceable units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside normal IBM service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

CRU service

IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU.

Tier 1 CRU

Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.

For machines with on-site same-day response service, IBM will replace a Tier 1 CRU part at your request, at no additional charge.

The following optional EV-DDMs classified as Tier 1 CRUs:

Tier 2 CRUs

You can install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it at no additional charge.

Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU. You may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement.

On-site service

IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.
