IBM xSeries 235 Servers Feature Fast Intel Xeon Processors for High Performance and Reliability

Integrated Gigabit Ethernet gives you extensive networking bandwidth keeping all slots free for other adapters. For flexibility to meet your custom space needs, the x235 comes in 5 U tower models and offers a tower to rack conversion kit. X-Architecture features like Chipkill memory5, Active PCI-X technology, and hot-swap cooling and power keep your server available when you need it.
The x235 is the first xSeries server to deliver integrated RAID-1 functionality, which gives you the ability to mirror HDDS for data protection. The new Dual Ultra320 SCSI channel that provides this capability is built into the motherboard, so you get the benefits of disk mirroring without using up a PCI slot. You get reliability and expandability so you can implement higher levels of RAID protection, when you purchase the new, low cost, optional ServeRAID 5i Controller. The increased processor performance coupled with DDR memory enables you to retrieve and process information faster and more efficiently. DDR memory executes twice the number of operations per cycle than traditional SDRAM memory, effectively doubling the data exchange rate between memory and processors.
IBM xSeries 560 Watt Redundant Power Supply:
The new 560-watt redundant power supply is designed to support the 533
MHz front side bus (FSB). The power supply is a auto sensing between
high- and low-power voltage range. This new 560-watt supply is not
backward compatible with the 400 MHz supply.
High-Performance Server Subsystems
xSeries 235 servers are high-throughput, two-way, SMP-capable network servers with excellent performance scalability when you add memory and a second processor. They incorporate powerful Intel Xeon processors with 512 KB L2 cache. These flip-chip, pin grid array 2 (FC-PGA2) processors feature advanced transfer L2 caches that are integrated onto the processor core and run at the same clock speed as the processor core. The advanced transfer caches are a result of a "backside bus" that is 256 bits wide. They feature a quad-wide cache line that can transfer four 64-bit cache line segments at one time to deliver full-speed capability. Both caches feature eight-way set associative cache.
Two processor connectors are standard on the system board to support installation of a second processor. High-speed, 133/266 MHz (bus speed runs at 133 MHz but data is clocked on two edges yielding a transfer rate of 266 MHz) SDRAM is optimized for 133 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance. The xSeries 235 server uses the ServerWorks CMIC-LE chipset to maximize throughput from processor to memory, and to 64-bit and 32-bit PCI buses.

World-Class Support Tools and Programs
The xSeries 235 server includes tools and programs designed to make ownership a positive experience. From the start, IBM programs help you purchase servers, get them running, and keep them running over the long haul. IBM can help your company maintain ownership of technology leadership network servers.
These new xSeries 235 servers contain additional fault tolerance through hot-swap redundant cooling, redundant power, and hot-plug PCI-X. They also feature enhanced system management control. As xSeries universal servers, they are offered in flexible tower models and can be rack mounted using a tower-to-rack conversion kit.
With the x235, two segments will be combined into one departmental and mission-critical space. The x235 is a compact 5 U, two way, SMP-capable Xeon processor-based platform designed with moderate high-availability features for mainstream network server applications.
For customers who require an additional measure of high availability, the xSeries 240 server features Active PCI slots (hot-add/hot-install). For those with applications that do not need the bandwidth of 133 MHz, 64-bit PCI bus, or the storage and memory expandability of a xSeries 235 server, the xSeries 220 server is an affordable alternative.
The xSeries 235 server is ideal for customers who require up to two-way 2.67 GHz or 2.8 GHz processing power, significant memory, high availability, and large data storage scalability. Its high-speed memory, 64-bit and 32-bit PCI buses, six Ultra320, hot-swap drive bays, and device bay for high-capacity tape drives make this server ideal for mainstream network computing.

xSeries 235 servers are intended for use as floor-standing servers and are tested and designed to operate in a horizontal position. The xSeries 235 can also be used as a rack model with the optional rack install kit.

Compatibility: The xSeries 235 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the xSeries 235 server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs.

Contact your IBM representative, IBM Business Partner, or refer to the IBM Sales Manual for information on the compatibility of hardware and software for xSeries servers. The Sales Manual is updated periodically as new features and options are announced that support these servers.

Integrated RAID One Configuration: There are two manufacturing instructions (MI) available to allow the customer to setup a RAID one configuration. These instructions enable configuration via Odyssey (IBM.com).
Bay Configuration: The xSeries 235 server contains 10 drive bays. The six 3.5-inch hot-swap bays are located on the lower half of xSeries 235 tower models. These bays are ready for various supported hot-swap drive option installation. The four bays on the top portion of tower models are designed primarily for removable media devices. One bay contains the standard 3.5-inch, slim-high diskette drive, another bay contains the standard CD-ROM drive, while the remaining two 5.25-inch half-high bays can support tape backup or other devices. These two drive bays can support three 3.5-inch slim-high, hot-swap HDDs through installation of an optional 3-Pack Ultra320 Hot-Swap Expansion Kit.
SCSI Cabling Considerations: The xSeries 235 server contains a backplane that supports six hot-swap drive bays. The backplane is connected to the integrated dual-channel, Ultra320 SCSI controller connector through a one-drop 16-bit LVD SCSI cable. If internal RAID support is required, other than the RAID 5i option, this cable cannot be used. You must purchase the SCSI Option One Drop Cable (33P3168).
A two-drop, 16-bit SCSI cable with integrated terminator is included with the Media Bay Tray and LVD Cable Kit (10K2340). The two-drop cable supports up to two internal devices in the open 5.25-/3.5-inch device bays. This cable can be attached to the integrated Ultra320 SCSI controller connector if a RAID adapter is used to support the internal hot-swap drive bays. It can also be used to attach to a supported SCSI adapter if the integrated Ultra320 SCSI controller is used for the hot-swap bays.
The 48x-20x IDE CD-ROM is cabled directly to the IDE port.
External SCSI Attachment: To attach external SCSI devices, a supported SCSI adapter is required or use of the external option cable (24P7973).
In the configurations where an external SCSI device attachment is required, an external SCSI connector knockout is available at rear of system for mounting the option cable.
External Serial Attachment: To attach an external serial cable RS-232 you will use the knockout at the rear of the system to mount the cable connector. The required serial cable is located inside the chassis in a package that is taped to the side of the chassis.

Power Supply Requirements: These models contain either one or two 560-watt power supplies, which become hot-swap power supplies. One hot-swap supply has enough power to supply a fully loaded box. If redundancy is required, the user should install an xSeries 560 W Hot-Swap Redundant Power Supply for 533 MHz FSB option to insure sufficient power will be available. A fault light illuminates when a power supplies fails.
Optional Rack Installations Feature: The xSeries 235 models are optionally installable as rack units and are designed so they can be installed in an industry-standard 19-inch rack cabinet such as the NetBAY42 or NetBAY25. The xSeries 235 system requires a rack mount kit for rack installation. In addition, it can also be installed in the deeper NetBAY42 ER.
If you choose not to use an IBM rack, the cabinet must meet EIA-310-D standards for mounting flanges and hole clearances with front-to-rear mounting of 27.5 to 28.5 inches. The rack must provide sufficient room in front of the forward EIA flange to allow for bezel attachment the standard for 310-D suggests 49-mm clearance. It must also provide adequate room at the rear of the rack, behind the rear flange for cable management; the x235 requires approximately 6.5 inches in this space. Rack should include perforated front and rear doors and must not prevent the flow of cool air into or out of the rack. The weight handling capacity of the rack varies by server. Finally, the rack must provide proper stabilization so that the rack does not become unstable when servers are pulled out of service.
Cable Orders: A Broadcom 5703 10/100/1000 Mbps, full-duplex Ethernet PCI controller, standard with the xSeries 235 server, is connected directly to an independent RJ-45 connector. The RJ-45 connector provides a 10BaseT, 100Base-TX, or 1000Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use an unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100/1000 Mbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.
There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.
Installability: The xSeries 235 server requires about 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Optional IBM features initially installed with this server carry the same warranty as the system. If installed after the initial system installation, they carry the balance of the system warranty or the optional feature warranty, whichever is greater.
Call IBM at 800-426-7378 in the U.S. and Canada for help with problem isolation for hardware to determine if warranty service or parts exchange is required. Some parts of the system, such as the keyboard, mouse, and memory, are considered customer replaceable units (CRUs).
International Warranty Service (IWS): IWS is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type.
You can obtain IWS through method of service, such as depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries. Service centers in certain countries may not be able to service all models of a particular machine type. In addition, some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service.

ServiceElect and ServiceSuite provide hardware warranty service upgrades, maintenance, and selected annuity support services in one agreement.
Warranty Service Upgrade: During the warranty period, warranty service upgrade provides an enhanced level of service for an additional charge. Depending on the upgrade selected, a higher level of on-site service labor in year one, and on-site labor during the second and third years is provided. Parts are covered for three years by the original warranty.

Non-IBM Parts Support
Warranty Service: IBM is now shipping IBM machines with selected non-IBM parts that contain an IBM field replaceable unit (FRU) part number label. These parts, parts with an IBM FRU label, are to be serviced during the IBM machine warranty period. IBM is covering the service on these selected non-IBM parts as an accommodation to their customers, and normal warranty service procedures for the IBM machine apply.
Warranty Service Upgrades and Maintenance Services: Under certain conditions, IBM Integrated Technology Services repairs selected non-IBM parts at no additional charge for machines that are covered under a warranty service upgrade or maintenance services.
IBM Service provides hardware problem determination on non-IBM parts (adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, memory, and so forth) installed within IBM systems covered under warranty service upgrade or maintenance services and provide the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge. If IBM has Technical Service Agreements with the manufacturers of the failing part, or if the failing part is an accommodations part (a part with an IBM FRU label), IBM may also source and replace the failing parts at no additional charge. For all other non-IBM parts, the customers are responsible for sourcing the parts. Installation labor is provided at no additional charge, if the machine is covered under a warranty service upgrade or maintenance services.
