    Title

The IBM System Storage TS3100 Tape Library Express Model L2U introduces enhanced SMB tape storage

    Overview

The new IBM System Storage TS3100 Tape Library Express Model L2U (machine type 3573, model L2U) is designed to offer high capacity, performance and technology for the midrange open systems environment and is the first in a family of IBM System Storage tape library offerings. The TS3100 Tape Library is an external 2U standalone or rack-mountable unit that incorporates a single Linear Tape-Open (LTO) IBM TotalStorage Ultrium 3 Tape Drive which more than doubles tape drive performance over the previous generation IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Tape Drives. It has a native data transfer rate of up to 80 MB/sec.

By using the IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 400 GB Data Cartridge, the Ultrium 3 Tape Drive has the capability of writing twice as much data, up to 400 GB native physical capacity (800 GB with 2:1 compression). The TS3100 Tape Library capacity is 22 tape cartridges, providing a media physical capacity of up to 8.8 TB (17.6 TB with 2:1 compression) data storage per unit.

The TS3100 Tape Library must be ordered with feature #8043, an Ultrium 3 LVD SCSI Drive, or feature #8044, an Ultrium 3 4 Gb Fibre Channel Drive. These features allow connection to a wide spectrum of open systems servers. IBM Ultrium 3 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 2 Data Cartridges at original Ultrium 2 capacities. IBM Ultrium 3 tape drives can also read LTO Ultrium 1 Data Cartridges with improved data rates of up to 20 MB/sec native data transfer rate (40 MB/sec with 2:1 compression).

The TS3100 Tape Library has two removable cartridge magazines, one on the left side (10 data cartridge slots) and one on the right (12 data cartridge slots). Additionally, the left magazine includes a single dedicated mail slot allowing for continuous library operation while importing/exporting media. A Remote Management Unit and a bar code reader are standard in the library, allowing the library to run in sequential or random access mode.

    Key prerequisites

Appropriate levels of host software are required to attach the TS3100 Tape Library with IBM LTO Ultrium 3 Tape Drives to selected IBM System p and p5, IBM System i and i5, IBM System z and z9 products, IBM eServer xSeries, HP, Sun, UNIX, Linux, and Windows servers. Refer to the Technical Information section for details.

    Product positioning

As you compare competitive tape solutions, consider: The TS3100 Tape Library and storage management applications help address these requirements and constitute a functionally rich tape storage solution incorporating LTO Ultrium tape technology. It is designed to give you flexibility of tape library management and unattended save and restore operations. The TS3100 Tape Library is an excellent solution if you use tape or require a larger-capacity or higher-performance tape backup with or without random access. The TS3100 Tape Library is an excellent choice for tape automation for IBM System p and p5, IBM System i and i5, IBM z and z9 products, IBM eServer xSeries, HP, Sun, UNIX, Linux, and Windows servers.

The TS3100 Tape Library offers one IBM TotalStorage LTO Ultrium 3 Tape Drive, one cartridge I/O station, and 22 cartridge slots with an autoloader physical capacity of 17.6 TB (with 2:1 compression) or 8.8 TB native.

The TS3100 Tape Library can be the answer to growing storage requirements and shrinking backup windows, and is part of a family of IBM System Storage LTO Ultrium tape products. The TS3100 Tape Library constitutes an excellent tape storage solution if you have an existing digital linear tape experience or require high-performance automated tape backup.

For capacity requirements less than 800 GB (2:1 compression), the external IBM TotalStorage 3580 Tape Drive should be considered.

For physical capacity requirements greater than 17.6 TB with scalable drives and numbers of cartridges, the IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library and IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library should be considered. You can tailor the IBM TS3310 Tape Library to address system capacity and performance needs, using up to six IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drives with a library physical capacity from 12.0 TB to 48.8 TB (24.0 TB to 97.6 TB with 2:1 compression). The IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library can address system physical capacity and performance requirement from 25.6 TB to 2.7 PB (51.2 TB to 2.7 PB with 2:1 compression) using up to 192 IBM Ultrium tape drives in up to 16 3584 library frames.

For protection of mission-critical data and hardware needs, optimized for enterprise multimode and host attachment, high-cycle and start/stop intensive tape applications, consider the IBM System Storage TS1120 or IBM TotalStorage 3592 Tape Drive with the IBM TotalStorage 3584 Tape Library or the IBM TotalStorage 3494 Tape Library.

Vendors of the following products plan to announce support of the TS3100 Tape Library on major platforms. The dates represent a best-effort estimate and do not imply commitments.

    By the general availability date:

    By GA+90 days:

    On as as-needed basis:

IBM continues to work to support the TS3100 Tape Library on the above products. Individual application vendors should be contacted for specific information and availability dates. The list represents accurate information at the time of publication and does not imply completeness.

Compatibility  The IBM LTO Ultrium 3 Tape Drives can read and write IBM LTO Ultrium 2 Data Cartridges and read IBM LTO Ultrium 1 Data Cartridges. The new LTO Ultrium 400 GB Data Cartridges can only be used on the new IBM LTO Ultrium 3 Tape Drives.

    Limitations

Fibre channel cable lengths are limited to 500 m (1650 ft.).

Total LVD SCSI cable length is limited to 25 m (81 ft.) using point-to-point interconnection (for example, one host connected to only one tape drive). Total LVD SCSI cable length is 12 m (39 ft.) using multi-drop interconnection (for example, one host connected to more than one tape drive on the same SCSI bus). Stub length at each device must not exceed 0.1 m (.033 ft.).

Installing more than one TS3100 Tape Library drive on a SCSI bus may impact tape drive or system performance. Intermixing of other SCSI devices on the same SCSI bus as the TS3100 Tape Library may impact performance of those devices. For optimal performance, it is recommended that no more than two IBM Ultrium Tape Drives be attached to an individual SCSI bus.

The TS3100 Tape Library operating environment must not conflict with media operating and storage requirements. If media is stored in the TS3100 Tape Library for more than ten hours, the media storage temperature requirements must be met.

    Planning information

Customer responsibilities  Physical planning is a customer responsibility. Detailed planning information is in the IBM System Storage TS3100 Tape Library Setup, Operator, and Service Guide (GA32-0545). The TS3100 Tape Library is designated as a customer setup unit (CSU). It is the customer's responsibility to install the unit. Customers are responsible for obtaining the appropriate SCSI adapters, cables, and interposers (if required) for system attachment. Customers are also responsible for ordering media. For optimum performance, the customer must obtain the latest level of firmware prior to installing the unit. Customers can download the latest level of firmware from the LTO Web site:

    http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/tape/lto

    Cable orders

A SCSI or Fibre cable is required to attach the TS3100 Tape Library to the server. At least one cable should be specified on the initial plant order. A SCSI terminator is included with each TS3100 Tape Library with feature (#8043). An interposer or interposers may be required for attachment to various server adapters. Customers are responsible for selecting and ordering the correct cables and interposers to match the IBM LTO Ultrium Tape Drive interface and the server interface.

Refer to the Cablessection at the end of Hardware Requirements for a list of available cables and interposers.

Refer to the Specify or Special Features section of the TS3100 Tape Library Sales Manual for a detailed description of the cables and interposers available.

Installability  Installation time for the IBM System Storage TS3100 Tape Library Model L2U, when rack-mounted, is approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, and when stand-alone installed is approximately 1.5 hours. Refer to the IBM System Storage TS3100 Tape Library Setup, Operator, and Service Guide, GA32-0545.
