----------------------------------------
Last October, IBM previewed a new server operating system strategy for System/390(R) designed to significantly simplify the complexity associated with MVS(R) systems. Today, we are announcing the availability of the product that delivers on that strategy -- OS/390(TM). "OS" means operating system to most people whose business is computing, but think of this product as providing the Open Server function needed to move from today's computing environment to the network-centric computing world of tomorrow. Together OS/390 and S/390(R) Parallel Enterprise Servers deliver the most scalable, flexible, and high-performance capacity enabling customers to build and manage a global enterprise.
At the core is the reliability and security of S/390 MVS systems. The new value in OS/390 is the integration of more than 30 MVS software components, extensively tested and delivered as a single network-ready operational environment. The integration eliminates separate orders, eliminates separate prerequisite or corequisite checks, eliminates separate installations and customer testing after each step. Installation of OS/390 provides the base operating system, an open communications server, and distributed data and file services.
The latest functions in software technology are included, such as object-oriented programming, OSF Distributed Computing Environment (DCE), multimedia, UNIX(1) application interfaces, and Parallel Sysplex(TM) support. OS/390 is consistent with IBM's Open Blueprint(TM), network-centric initiative, and overall IBM software strategy. Finally, a full range of customized services offerings is available to easily and quickly make OS/390 your current operational environment. Every OS/390 customer will receive an OS/390 Internet BonusPak Internet server at no-charge that enables them to easily and quickly take advantage of the internet maketplace. For additional information, access the S/390 Homepage on http://www.s390.ibm.com.
Customers will realize OS/390 value from the simplification of enterprise computing. The many-faceted, complex operating system structure, that has evolved from S/360(TM) and S/370(TM), will be transformed to a S/390 server operating environment that is easier to maintain and support. The total costs of computing will be improved by doing more with less. Business (IT) infrastructure can meet the function and capacity growth demanded by users, new computing models, expanding business, and new client/server applications.

OS/390 Overview
OS/390 Product Content
OS/390 is a set of MVS base, open, client/server and applications-enabling functions orderable with one program number and delivered as one product. Customers may see a reduction in the time and resource necessary to plan, order, and integrate the following base MVS and communication server elements.
OS/390 contains equivalent function at or beyond the release levels listed for the following currently available products/features. Future functional enhancements in the MVS environment for products or features marked with an asterisk (*) will be made available only through OS/390 -- not through additional releases or versions of these products or features.
Note: See section UNIX Services in OS/390 Release 2 Additional Function for a description of XPG4 Base Profile and XPG4 UNIX Branding plans for OS/390. In addition to the elements of the XPG4 Base Profile and the XPG4 UNIX Brand specifications, OS/390 provides other open systems functions and APIs. See OS/390 OpenEdition MVS Introduction (GC28-1889) for further information.
OS/390 delivers optional features that have a high affinity to the base OS/390 system. The list of optional features is:
Note: The DFSMS(TM) features are packaged in combinations. See the Ordering Information section for the available combinations.
Integration Testing: To further reduce migration time, the OS/390 product will be system integration tested using a production-like environment. This environment includes systems management function provided by SystemView(R) for MVS and subsystems such as CICS, IMS and DB2(R). This additional testing supplements existing functional testing with a focus on tasks performed by customers in the production environment, thus helping establishments move more quickly to new function. System integration testing will be provided for all releases of OS/390.
Installation and Delivery
New ServerPac
The entitled delivery options for OS/390 are the new ServerPac for OS/390 and the existing CBPDO(TM). The new ServerPac supports currently marketed MVS platform products, such as subsystems, compilers, or system management products of SystemView for MVS.
An OS/390 ServerPac order will allow the customer to select from a checklist of products. OS/390 ServerPac for CICS, IMS, DB2 and NCP are also entitled for OS/390 licenses. One order delivers all products that were selected from the order checklist. Delivery will be in the form of DLIBs, target libraries and an SMP/E CSI that reflects the integrated service level of the DLIB and target system libraries. These datasets are delivered in dump-by-dataset format. Separate install passes will be required for the MVS base SREL and each subsystem (CICS, IMS, DB2 and NCP). Each install path uses the same install dialogs and the install documentation is consistent throughout.
For additional information on the new ServerPac, see Software Announcement 296-020, dated February 20, 1996.
The orderable MVS Customized Offerings Driver, if required, will be delivered in a two-volume dump/restore format. DASD supported includes 3380, 3390 and 9345 (single density).
Install dialogs are provided to assist installation and tailoring of the OS/390 system. These dialogs support all SMP/E installable host and workstation products. Non-SMP/E-installable workstation code will be delivered on diskette, for example, for LANRES, LAN Server for MVS, VisualLift ADE, or TCP/IP Offload to OS/2. SMP/E-installable workstation products will be delivered in dump-by-dataset format for host loading, for example GDDM PCLK and OS2LINK, and SystemView for MVS base. Customers must however, download these from the host to a PC. Install dialogs will support tasks such as user-defined dataset naming, placement, or volume naming. The install dialogs save customer entered data for the next install, saving time and effort.
The OS/390 ServerPac will be validated prior to shipment by an initial program load (IPL) and install verification procedures (IVPs) executed at the production center, since it may include more products and features than participated in the systems integration test. Customers who use the OS/390 ServerPac can utilize SMP/E to install corrective service and/or other products that they choose to install at a future date on top of the OS/390 System, built using the OS/390 ServerPac.
OS/390 JES Considerations: Installations choosing to use JES2 or JES3 releases prior to OS/390 will need to bring these components forward into the OS/390 environment. The ServerPac supports customer use of existing JES2 or JES3 systems by placing the JES2 and JES3 libraries separate from system libraries.
Factory Preload Services
Factory-based preload services are available for OS/390 when DASD and a S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server or S/390 Parallel Transaction Server (IBM 9672) are ordered. See Marketing Announcement 394-199, dated September 13, 1994, for more details.
Enabling OS/390 Optional Priced Features
Selected OS/390 optional priced features use a new OS/390 product registration service, together with product policy statements, to determine whether or not the OS/390 priced feature has been ordered and should run.
Those OS/390 optional priced features that are ordered concurrently with OS/390 will be shipped by IBM together with policy statements in SYS1.PARMLIB which "enable" the ordered priced feature. OS/390 priced features, which may have not been ordered, may also be shipped with OS/390 but with policy statements which "disable" the unordered features. If the customer subsequently "enables" any of the optional priced features, those features become subject to the terms of the customer's existing OS/390 license as described in OS/390 Licensed Program Specifications (GC28-1728). Customers must notify IBM when they enable an optional feature that was shipped disabled from IBM. A detailed description of the enablement support for OS/390 features is available in OS/390 MVS Product Management (GC28-1730).
The OS/390 optional priced features which support this enablement capability in OS/390 Release 1 are:

OS/390 Release 1 Additional Function
In addition to the function described in Software Announcement 295-423, dated October 10, 1995, which included:
System Services
OS/390 Product Registration and Enablement: The MVS BCP, through product registration services and reporting, provides mechanisms that products can use to indicate to the system that they are running and that installations can use to control and report on registered products.
Product registration is intended to improve system management by:
The TSOLIB Command
Systems Management
SystemView for MVS Base: IBM SystemView for MVS is a member of the SystemView Series, designed to provide integrated systems management function from a single point of control for managing diverse, distributed computing systems. SystemView for MVS is IBM's solution for customers wishing to manage their enterprise from MVS. Rich in function, simple to install and use, open, comprehensive, and extendable, it is built on IBM's proven track record for reliable and effective systems management.
Simple and Reliable: SystemView for MVS flows from the SystemView disciplines that you have been using for years, putting systems management into business terms. The disciplines drive the overall organization of the SystemView for MVS user interface, from which you have common integrated access to the SystemView for MVS functions you have installed.
SystemView for MVS Functions and SystemView for MVS Base: Two ingredients -- namely, SystemView for MVS functions and SystemView for MVS base -- combine to create SystemView for MVS. SystemView for MVS functions provide the systems management functional content, while the SystemView for MVS base provides integrated access to the functions. The SystemView for MVS functions can be ordered separately.
OS/390 provides the SystemView for MVS base which consists of the following key items:
The SystemView for MVS Launch window is key in fulfilling one of the many objectives of the first release of SystemView for MVS, which is to integrate the rich set of SystemView for MVS functions "on the glass".
The Launch window support of sessions with MVS systems eliminates the need for a user to directly manage the host emulation sessions.
Application Enablement
High-Level Assembler Toolkit: OS/390 Release 1 includes the previously announced High Level Assembler Toolkit as an optional, priced feature. This Toolkit provides a powerful set of capabilities to improve application development, debugging, and recovery on MVS systems. The productivity-enhancing tools include:
VisualLift Run-time Environment: The VisualLift element provides a visual facelift that gives existing 3270-based applications a workstation graphical user interface (GUI), without programming and without changing the application at the host. By integrating the Runtime Environment in the base products of OS/390, customers will have the convenience of using Solution Provider, your own, or IBM VisualLifted applications without any additional cost or administration. The VisualLift Run-time supports both Windows+ and OS/2 Warp(TM) workstations.
VisualLift Application Development Environment Optional Feature -- The VisualLift Application Development Environment (ADE) optional feature of OS/390 (previously part of the VisualLift for MVS, VSE, and VM stand-alone product) includes tools for the cost-effective design and development of the workstation interface. Inconsistencies in host 3270 applications can be masked and the ability to control the input of false data reduces host interactions and makes the application easier to learn and use.
The VisualLift optional feature of OS/390 also provides exits and services to extend the functionality of applications beyond pure facelifting. For example, it can provide additional input validation on the workstation, or communicate with other workstation-based applications. Key to the development of this product was the requirement that VisualLifted applications provide the same integrity, reliability and availability characteristics as the underlying host applications and be cost effective to implement. OS/2 or Warp is required for the Application Development Environment.
C/C++: OS/390 Release 1 includes the C/C++ optional feature which contains the functions previously announced in C/C++ for MVS/ESA Version 3.
This optional priced feature introduces C++ to the mainframe. Building on the strengths of the existing C/370(TM) product, the OS/390 C/C++ feature integrates C++ language support into a state-of-the-art language-centered environment that application developers can use to create, modify, test, and debug mission critical C or C++ applications targeted to execute on the MVS/ESA platform.
The OS/390 C/C++ feature supports OpenEdition MVS allowing application developers to use object-oriented technology, including SOMobjects for MVS, to build OpenEdition applications.
The OS/390 C/C++ feature provides a number of application development tools and functions such as:
For more information on C/C++ for MVS/ESA, as previously announced, refer to Software Announcements 295-069, dated February 28, 1995; 295-344, dated July 10, 1995; and 295-403, dated September 26, 1995.
SOMobjects Service Classes: SOMobjects service classes extend the power of SOMobjects for MVS, which is based on the System Object Model (SOM) technology for defining and managing binary class libraries. SOMobjects service classes provide solutions to common application development challenges, such as:
MVS Applications Feature for TCP/IP: The OpenEdition MVS Applications Feature for IBM TCP/IP Version 3, previously announced, is included as an optional, unpriced feature of OS/390. This element provides a set of applications and interfaces to enhance interoperability between the OpenEdition MVS environment and varied other client or server hosts in a TCP/IP network. The feature relies exclusively on the OpenEdition MVS environment and is attractive to new users who may be familiar with appearance and function typical of UNIX systems.
The feature extends the function of TCP/IP for MVS, and may be used in conjunction with current TCP/IP applications that operate in the traditional TSO and batch environments of MVS.
The OpenEdition MVS Applications Feature for TCP/IP optional, unpriced feature of OS/390 can provide:
LAN Services
Enhanced LANRES Support: The following LANRES enhancements are included in OS/390 Release 1:
The functional support is identical to that released January 1996 for LANRES/MVS and LANRES 1.3.
The functional support is identical to that released January 1996 for LANRES/MVS and LANRES 1.3.
This driver can produce AFP documents, overlays, and page segments from any Windows application that supports printing. These can be printed on the higher-speed host printer with the LANRES LAN-to-Host Print Server.
The driver is available at:
OSA Support Facility Release 1
The OSA Support Facility is a central point of control for OSA-1 and OSA-2. It delivers a simple means to configure and to manage OSA-1 and OSA-2 when running as a SNA/APPN(R), TCP/IP, and Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) networks.
OS/390 Release 2 Additional Function
In addition to the function previously described in Software Announcement 295-423, dated October 10, 1995, which included:
System Services
Base Control Program
PARMLIB Concatenation Support: This support provides the capability to concatenate up to 10 additional data sets to SYS1.PARMLIB at IPL, giving the customer greater flexibility in managing PARMLIB in the installation. Changes and scope of access to specific data sets can be defined on a more granular basis. Most PARMLIB members will be eligible for specification in a concatenated dataset.
PARMLIB Symbolic Pre-processor Tool Enhancements: PARMLIB Symbolic Pre-processor Tool support for MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 and OS/390 Release 1 is being provided as a migration aid for parallel sysplex customers. This support provides the customer with the ability to interactively determine what symbol substitutions will take place in PARMLIB before use, potentially saving system IPLs. Error detection and correction can now be done from an ISPF session.
Enhancements introduced in OS/390 Release 2 will allow the customer to preprocess symbolics defined in a concatenated PARMLIB.
Force SYSCLONE Uniqueness: In MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 the SYSCLONE symbolic was introduced in PARMLIB as a short identifier for a system in a sysplex. For compatibility and migration reasons, the customer had the ability to indicate uniqueness did not have to be enforced. In this release, uniqueness of SYSCLONE across systems in the sysplex will be enforced.
Enhanced LNKLST processing: OS/390 Release 2 provides the following LNKLST processing enhancements:
Systems Management
DFSORT: DFSORT is IBM's world class sorting product. The newest release, DFSORT Release 13, will be an optional feature in OS/390 Release 2. DFSORT, together with DFSMS/MVS and RACF, form the strategic product base for the evolving system-managed storage environment. DFSMS/MVS provides vital storage and data management functions, RACF adds security functions, and DFSORT adds the ability to do faster and easier sorting, merging, copying, reporting, and analysis of your business information. And this is a single vendor solution which allows you to easily install or upgrade software.
DFSORT has a lot of exciting features packed into it. For details, visit the DFSORT home page on the World Wide Web at URL:
SMP/E: IBM plans on adding support in the SMP/E element of OS/390 for a new, BUILDMCS command. This command will facilitate the copying of FMIDs (and their installed service) from one target and distribution zone pair to another target and distribution zone pair. Currently, this is accomplished through a documented process using many SMP/E commands and considerable manual effort. The BUILDMCS command removes most of the manual effort involved and reduces the chance of error. This command will generate the SMP/E Modification Control Statements (MCS), JCLIN and libraries required to reinstall the specified FMIDs.
This enhancement supports the use of the system replace vehicles, for example, the new ServerPac, by making it easier for customers to bring forward no longer marketed IBM product or SMP/E supported ISV products rather than having to re-install them from scratch. They can either be copied to the new system environment or copied to a separate SMP/E environment depending on product requirements.
UNIX Services
IBM plans to complete the X/Open XPG4 UNIX Brand test suite and request branding by the end of 1996. This follows the XPG4 Base Profile branding of MVS/ESA Version 5 Release 2.2 in December 1995. In the first quarter of 1996 the XPG4 Base Profile Brand test suite will be re-run for OS/390 Release 1, and IBM will apply for a name change to the base brand that was issued in December 1995.
OS/390 is an integral part of IBM's overall network-centric computing strategy, and this branding will increase customers' flexibility to launch open, network-enabled applications on the server operating system.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
The S/390 strategy continues a major transformation in response to customer requirements for improved ease of use, software price aligned to value, an increased application portfolio and lower cost of maintenance. The strategy of OS/390 is to transform MVS/ESA into a fully integrated server operating system with competitive server functions such as Open and industry standards, network-centric computing support and UNIX application environment support including object technology. This server operating system will also reduce complexity by integrating existing products and features.
Software Servers for OS/390
Software Servers for OS/390 continue the S/390 software transformation that started with OS/390. This transformation addresses customer requirements for complexity reduction, application enablement, improved ease of use on the OS/390 platform and more functional consistency and interoperability across operating system platforms.
The Software Servers for OS/390 will specifically address two customer requirements:
The Software Servers share the following objectives and value:

Compatibility: Products previously supported on the existing functions integrated into OS/390 will continue to be supported by OS/390.
Migration Flexibility: In a multisystem complex or sysplex configuration, three consecutive releases of OS/390 can coexist, providing compatibility and flexibility in migration. OS/390 can also coexist with supported MVS systems in a multisystem complex or sysplex.
Two consecutive releases of key subsystems running on OS/390, such as DB2, CICS, and IMS, can coexist within a multisystem complex or sysplex.
Within a sysplex, the following JES2 release levels can all coexist in the same multi-access spool (MAS): JES2 Version 5 Release 1, Version 5 Release 2, OS/390 Release 1, OS/390 Release 2 (when available).
Within a sysplex, the following JES3 release levels can all coexist in the same complex: JES3 Version 5 Release .2.1, OS/390 Release 1, OS/390 Release 2 (when available).
Specific functions may only be available on the up-level systems, or it may be necessary to up-level all systems to enable some functions.
JES Compatibility: OS/390 Release 1 is upwardly compatible with MVS/ESA Version 5 Release 2.2.
OS/390 Release 1 will run with the JES component shipped with the following versions and releases:
JES2 JES3MVS/SP(TM)-JES2 3.1.3 + PTFs MVS/SP-JES3 3.1.2 + PTFs MVS/SP-JES3 3.1.3 + PTFs
MVS/ESA SP-JES2 4.2 + PTF MVS/ESA SP-JES2 4.3 + PTF MVS/ESA SP-JES3 4.2.2 (FMID HJS4421) (shipped after December 27, 1991) + PTF
MVS/ESA SP-JES2 5.1 + PTF MVS/ESA SP-JES3 5.1.1 + PTF MVS/ESA SP-JES2 5.2 + PTF MVS/ESA SP-JES3 5.2.2
JES2 and Sysplex
Single MVS Image: Customers will be required to build a sysplex when OS/390 Release 1 is installed. In a single system sysplex, XCF can be configured in local mode, so there is no requirement for a sysplex couple dataset.
If a JES2 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1 is used in conjunction with OS/390 Release 1, a sysplex is not required.
Multi-access Spool with Multiple MVS Images Using One CPC: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when OS/390 Release 1 is installed. XCF must be configured with a sysplex couple dataset so that JES2 can keep track of member status.
If a JES2 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1 is used in conjunction with OS/390 Release 1, a sysplex is not required. For this type of configuration, the JES2 multi-access spool (MAS) must have seven or fewer MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, OS/390 Release 1 cannot be mixed with other pre-Version 5 levels of JES2 in the same JES2 MAS.
Multi-access Spool with Multiple MVS Images Using Multiple CPCs: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when OS/390 Release 1 is installed. A Sysplex Timer is required to synchronize time across the CPCs.
If a customer chooses to use a JES2 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1, a sysplex is not required. However, the JES2 MAS that is implemented cannot contain more than seven MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, OS/390 Release 1 cannot be mixed with other pre-Version 5 levels of JES2 in the same JES2 MAS.
JES3 and Sysplex
Single MVS Image: Customers will be required to build a sysplex when OS/390 Release 1 is installed. In building a single system sysplex, XCF can be configured in local mode, so there is no requirement for a sysplex couple dataset.
If a JES3 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 1.1 is used in conjunction with OS/390 Release 1, a sysplex is not required.
Multiple MVS Images Using One CPC: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when OS/390 Release 1 is installed. The sysplex couple dataset required by XCF must be allocated and used.
If a JES3 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 1.1 is used in conjunction with OS/390 Release 1, a sysplex is not required. For this type of configuration the JES3 complex must have eight or fewer MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, OS/390 Release 1 JES3 cannot be mixed with levels of JES3 prior to JES3 Version 5 Release 2.1 in the same JES3 complex. When migrating to OS/390 Release 1 JES3, the JES3 feature must be migrated to the global processor before it is migrated to any local processor.
Multiple MVS Images Using Multiple CPCs: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when OS/390 Release 1 is installed. A Sysplex Timer is required to synchronize time across the CPCs.
If a customer chooses to use a JES3 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 1.1, a sysplex is not required. However, the JES3 complex that is implemented cannot contain more than eight MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, OS/390 Release 1 cannot be mixed with levels of JES3 prior to JES3 5.2.1 in the same JES3 complex. When migrating to OS/390 Release 1 JES3, the JES3 feature of OS/390 Release 1 must be migrated to the global processor before it is migrated to any local processors.
JES3 Tape Utilities: OS/390 Release 1 removes support for the JES3 Tape Utilities. Customers are encouraged to convert their tape management to utilities supported by DITTO/MVS.
RMF Compatibility: The RMF included as an optional feature of OS/390 will be integration tested, ensuring compatibility. Customers intending to use the RMF Version 5 Release 2 standalone product with OS/390 should verify that the appropriate service level is applied.
OS/390 Migration Considerations: Because the components of OS/390 are integrated into a single package with compatible service levels, it is expected that customers will migrate all elements of OS/390 at one time. For the JES2 or JES3 component, the migration can be staged to remain compatible with other systems.
Customers using the CBPDO delivery option, will only have to install those elements and features of OS/390 which are at a higher level than their existing system. For example, MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 customers with DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 3 installed will have to install the new OS/390 level of the Base Control Program (BCP), but would not have to reinstall DFSMS/MVS or the OpenEdition MVS and HCD components of OS/390. Detailed instructions on how to migrate from an MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 system will be documented in the OS/390 Program Directory.
Note: Customers will need to perform "normal" release-to-release migration activities for any element that they install.
UNIX Services: In order to allow an orderly migration from earlier releases of OpenEdition MVS to OS/390, OS/390 will support various down-level releases of prerequisite products. It is important to note that conformance to the XPG4 Base Profile will be certified only on OS/390 Release 1 and OpenEdition MVS/ESA Version 5 Release 2.2.
CICS/MVS Considerations: For customers migrating to OS/390 from a pre-ESA MVS level, such as MVS/XA, CICS/MVS Version 2 Release 1.2, which was withdrawn from marketing effective April 30, 1994, (refer to Software Announcement 294-012, dated February 1, 1994), will be supported until December 31, 1996. Discontinuance of program services for CICS/MVS Version 2 Release 1.2, effective December 31, 1996, was announced in Software Announcement 294-500, dated September 6, 1994.
Performance Considerations: Performance information for OS/390 will be available at general availability. For a copy, contact your IBM representative.
User Group Requirements: This announcement satisfies or partially satisfies two requirements from one or more of the world wide user group communities, which include Australasian SHARE/GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, G.U.I.D.E. Europe, Japan GUIDE/SHARE (JGS), Guide Latin American (LAG), SHARE EUROPE and SHARE Incorporated.

Planning Information
S/390 Support Family of Services: OS/390 is supported by the S/390 Support Family of Services. These provide technical support services that go beyond the scope of traditional hardware warranties, software entitlements, and maintenance agreements. S/390 Support Family can help enhance systems availability and productivity by providing direct access to technical specialists, and by backing the services with a satisfaction guarantee.
S/390 Support Family services include:
System Integrity
IBM will accept APARs where the installation of OS/390 introduces an exposure to system integrity of the MVS system. Refer to Software Announcement P81-174, dated October 21, 1981.
Security, Auditability, and Control
Data security and auditability in the OS/390 environment are enhanced by the functions available in Resource Access Control Facility (RACF) licensed program (5695-039), part of the optional OS/390 Security Server feature.
B1/C2 Security: The critical Operating System components of the OS390 base and security server and optional features, such as MVS/ESA and RACF (part of the optional Security Server feature), continue to be designed to meet the NSA's C2/B1 Trusted Computer Systems Evaluation Criteria. However, some OS/390 functions have not been designed to meet C2 or B1 and when used in conjunction with the above components may have an impact on the C2 or B1 capability of the total system. The impact can only be assessed on an installation-by-installation basis. Consequently, no formal claims about the C2/B1 security of OS/390 can be made. However, the C2/B1 capability of the OS/390 base and communication server may be useful in securing certification of some C2/B1 application systems based on OS/390.
Security APARs: IBM will accept Security APARs for OS/390. Security APARs are for reporting problems in existing security mechanisms where the problem descriptions do not meet the precise definition of system integrity, but do constitute an exposure to the security of the system as a whole or to an IBM product which runs on the system. Originally announced in Software Announcement 289-581, dated October 24, 1989.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

This IBM program has separately charged features. Single Version Charging applicability or calculation of an upgrade credit to a designated replacement program or programs will be on a like for like feature/functional basis only. To accomplish this, features may be added to the replacement program or deleted from the replaced program. Credits are cumulative and calculated separately for each feature from the date charges were due. All features to be upgraded must be done in a single upgrade transaction to one or more replacements. Any features not upgraded in this single transaction cannot be used for a subsequent upgrade credit calculation unless designated by IBM.
Warranted: Yes
Licensed Program Materials Availability: Restricted Materials -- Yes. This licensed program will be available with source licensed program material for some modules designated as RESTRICTED MATERIALS OF IBM. In addition, some modules will be available without source licensed program materials. These modules will be available in object code. The remaining modules will be available with source licensed program materials.
Testing Period: Basic License -- Two months
DSLO -- Not applicable
The two-month OS/390 test period is for the initial product order of OS/390 and any optional chargeable features ordered at the time of the basic license. No test period is available for optional features after the OS/390 test period ends.
OS/390 Optional Features: You are authorized to use only OS/390 and any of its optional features ordered concurrent with OS/390 which IBM ships to you "enabled." Other optional features may also be supplied to you "disabled" for installation with OS/390. If you subsequently "enable" any of the other optional features, they become subject to the terms of your license for OS/390. Customers must notify IBM when they enable an optional feature that was shipped disabled from IBM. When optional features are subsequently "enabled", they will receive any test allowance remaining for OS/390 before charges become due. You will have no less than two months to evaluate each optional feature. If charges become due prior to the end of two months IBM will provide a satisfaction guarantee of up to two months for such features of an OS/390 basic license. IBM will credit the price paid. If you do not wish to continue to use those features you must "disable" them and notify IBM. Your license will be terminated and any applicable credit issued. No satisfaction guarantee is available for subsequent "enabling" of the same features.
DSLO Licenses: DSLO licenses for OS/390 may not contain any program features not also included in an OS/390 basic license. For example the JES3 optional feature may not be contained in a OS/390 DSLO license unless it is also in an OS/390 basic license.
OS/390 does not qualify as a basic license for any DSLO licenses of the individual programs which are now included in OS/390. For example, there cannot be a DSLO license for MVS/ESA Version 5 with only a basic license for OS/390 There must also be a basic license for MVS/ESA Version 5.
OS/390 and the Parallel Sysplex: OS/390 integrates the key platform functions that were previously available in multiple S/390 products including MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2, DFSMS/MVS Version 1.3, and VTAM for MVS Version 4 Release 3.
PSLC selection is at the OS/390 product level, not at the feature level.
OS/390 features can be aggregated across a parallel sysplex provided they are the same features on each system.
Today's announcement of changes to the Parallel Sysplex terms and conditions acknowledges that most current MVS customers can exploit the value of the Parallel Sysplex through the OS/390 platform. OS/390, by itself, fulfills all the software requirements for PSLC pricing. These changes simplify the requirements for PSLC in both single system and coupled system environments. For more information, see IBM Marketing Announcement 396-021, dated February 20, 1996.
VisualLift ADE licensing: Only one license is required per designated machine (host processor or parallel sysplex complex) where the 3270 applications are developed and/or maintained. IBM grants licensees of OS/390 permission to use the OS/390 VisualLift Application Development Environment optional feature on all suitably configured programmable workstations connected to the designated machine.
Program Services: Central Service, including the IBM Support Center, will be available until discontinued by IBM upon twelve months' written notice.
Central Service, including the IBM Support Center, for DSLO licenses will be provided only through the customer location designated for the basic license.

One-Time Charge: Customers who pay a one-time charge for a licensed program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no additional charge. Significant new function may be offered as an optional feature and charged for separately. If a replacement program is announced and the customer elects to license the replacement program, a time-based upgrade credit may apply.
Variable Charges: The applicable graduated one-time charge or graduated monthly license charge will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the licensed program is licensed for use. If the program is designated to a processor in a group for which no charge is listed above, the charge of the next higher group listed applies.
For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the then current charges between the two groups. For downgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will be no adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.
For upgrades or downgrades of monthly license charge licenses, the monthly license charge applicable to the higher or lower group will apply.
Entry Support License One-Time Charge: One-time charge authorizes use only on IBM Entry End User/390 Machines.
