The PC Server 500 System/390(R) (PC Server S/390(R)) is an integrated hardware and software solution that combines:

The PC Server S/390, an innovative, technologically advanced server, exploits the reliability and high performance of the PC Server 500 -- running OS/2 Warp in a LAN environment -- and S/390 architecture. This offers low-cost S/390 capability, plus the ability to use PC-based development tools.

The PC Server S/390 enables you to utilize S/390 processing power wherever you need it, independent of the host system. This allows developers to arrive at a solution that breaks through programming bottlenecks. Developers and programmers can develop, test, and create prototype S/390 applications and client/server applications in a stand-alone environment -- without interrupting production applications running on the host system. By using the PC Server S/390, you can take advantage of productivity tools such as graphical user interfaces and multitasking capabilities.

If you need distributed S/390 processing capabilities, the PC Server S/390 offers high-performance and scalable networking. In addition to supporting S/390 applications, the server also supports OS/2 applications. The PC Server S/390 provides file, print, or application serving, or can function as a client running LAN requester software for coexistence in an established LAN. This makes it easy for you to integrate the S/390 into a network.

For System/370(TM) users, the PC Server/390 helps you make the transition to next-generation S/390 computing, using the same architecture, while building on existing skills and dramatically reducing costs. Total computing costs are reduced in many areas including maintenance, power, cooling, and floor space.

Attractive purchase prices for VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, and MVS/ESA operating systems and the associated S/390 software are available for license to the PC Server S/390. Product and price information is available through IBMLink(TM) or by contacting your IBM representative.

Single Unit Price: Base configurations of the PC Server S/390 range from $50,000 to $90,000 depending on configuration, operating system, and software selected.

Planned Availability Date: July 21, 1995; MVS Operating System and associated programs on 4 mm DAT will be available for ordering effective July 10, 1995.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The announced product combines the high-performance Pentium PC Server 500 with the specialized PC Server S/390 Microprocessor Complex for the Micro Channel-based PC Server. All I/O is handled by OS/2 running on the Intel Pentium processor in the PC Server. This I/O capability is provided through a collection of device managers (where device drivers exist and the I/O device will be shared with other OS/2 processes) and device drivers (where the device will be dedicated to S/390 processing).

This unique server is targeted for the S/390 customers with interactive workloads, batch workloads, and/or non-I/O-intensive transaction processing. For this type of environment, the PC Server System/390 provides a viable replace and/or distributed option. A customer workload requiring intensive I/O will not realize the same performance and throughput characteristics as S/390 machines with multiple channels due to the PC Server System/390 having only a single I/O channel. The PC Server System/390 may not be the platform of choice for customers requiring extensive I/O support. Refer to the Planning Information section in this document for customer fit.

The PC Server 500 System/390 systems with S/390 operating compatibility offered in this announcement are comprised of component products currently offered by IBM. For detailed information regarding these products and related offerings, refer to the following IBM announcements:

Operating Environment: For operating environment information, refer to the product announcement material of the currently offered components of the solutions. The announcement material is identified in the Product Positioning section of this announcement.

Hardware Requirements: For machine requirements information, refer to the product announcement material of the currently offered components of the solutions. The announcement material is identified in the Product Positioning section of this announcement.

The PC Server 500 System/390 requires an analog display (6325, 6324, 9524, 9525, or equivalent) for system setup and service.

Programming Requirements: The following operating systems support the PC Server 500 System/390:

Compatibility: For compatibility information, refer to the individual product announcements. The announcements are identified in the Product Positioning section.

The PC Server 500 System/390 contains licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of these system programs are stored in the system ROM, while others are contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EPROM on the system board into system memory. This BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the PC Server 500 System/390 and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under DOS and OS/2 on the Personal Computer XT(TM), Personal Computer AT(R), and the PS/2 family. Due to the higher speed of the processors in these models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification.

Limitations: For information on limitations of the components of the PC Server 500 System/390, refer to the individual product announcements. The announcements are identified in the Product Positioning section.

The PC Server System/390 is a combination of the System/390 and PC Server architectures and provides access and use of both in a single package. The implementation of the S/390 capability in the PC Server System/390 is unique when compared to standard S/390 processors. While the S/390 instructions execute natively on a dedicated CMOS chip on the S/390 Microprocessor Complex, the execution of S/390 I/O is handled by OS/2 Device Managers and Device Drivers. The PC Server System/390 cannot support multiple "channels" attached to the same physical device. This capability exists and is exploited in standard S/390 systems. In this implementation, S/390 devices (tapes and printers) are either channel attached (via S/370 Channel Emulator/A) or emulated on PC devices transparent to the S/390. While this creates an environment with many exciting options for I/O attachment and support, use of the server's I/O resources requires workload planning to achieve good results.

Installability: The PC Server System/390 requires about one to two hours for installation and initial setup. Installation includes unpacking, set-up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other adapters, features, and software. PC software can take two to eight hours to install. Installation of a base VM/ESA or VSE/ESA system using the preconfigured starter CD takes about 30 minutes. To install a VM/ESA, VSE/ESA, or MVS/ESA system using currently supported media can take eight hours or more. A softcopy publication, IBM PC Server 500 System/390 Installation, Configuration and User!s Guide, provides installation instructions and is shipped with the system.
