Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

       With today's announcement, the IBM Enterprise System/3090
(ES/3090) Processor Complex S Models are enhanced with the addition
of a new ES/3090 Processor Unit and additional Processor
Resource/Systems Manager (TM) (PR/SM) capabilities.
       The ES/3090 Processor Unit Model 100S is a uniprocessor that
provides a new entry point into the ES/3090 S Model Processor family
and has upgrade capability within the ES/3090 S Model family.  The
new Model 100S supports the Enterprise Systems Architecture/370 (TM)
(ESA/370 (TM)).
       The PR/SM feature has been enhanced for ES/3090 Models 180S,
200S, 300S, 280S, 400S, 500S, and 600S.  This enhancement includes
the capability to define a second System/370 channel set for
operation in a logical partition and up to 7 logical partitions (14
for a physically partitioned multiprocessor (MP)) when operating in
Logically Partitioned (LPAR) mode.
       IMS/ESA Version 3 Release 1, together with support from
ES/3090 Models 180S, 200S, 300S, 280S, 400S, 500S, and 600S, should
result in reduced logging volume for DL/I data bases accessed from
IMS/DC or CICS.

DESCRIPTION
PROCESSOR UNIT
The IBM ES/3090 Processor Unit Model 100S contains one central
processor (CP), utilizes one 64Kb high-speed buffer, and operates at
a machine cycle time of 18.5 ns.  The processing unit can support
ESA/370 mode (which supports 370-XA and ESA/370 operating systems),
System/370 mode, and LPAR mode (which is available with the
installation of the PR/SM feature).
       IMS/ESA Version 3 Release 1 together with support from ES/3090
Models 180S, 200S, 300S, 280S, 400S, 500S, and 600S should result in
reduced logging volume for DL/I data bases accessed from IMS/DC or
CICS.  See IBM Programming Announcement 288-609, dated
October 25, 1988.

NOTE: The ES/3090 Model 100S can only be ordered from the plant in a
fixed configuration.  Optional features must be field installed.
       The ES/3090 Model 100S fixed configuration consists of:
o   32Mb central storage
o   16 channels
o   No Expanded Storage
o   No Vector Facility
o   No PR/SM
VECTOR FACILITY
An optional Vector Facility can be installed on the Model 100S. The
Vector Facility feature increases the computing performance
capability of the central processor when iterative or repetitive
logical or floating-point operations are to be performed on many
related data elements.  The Vector Facility on the ES/3090 Model 100S
performs single or compound vector operations with a single
instruction using a vector register section size of 128 elements.
PROCESSOR RESOURCE/SYSTEMS MANAGER (PR/SM)
For the ES/3090 Model 100S, one optional PR/SM feature may be
installed.  With PR/SM installed, three modes of operation are
available:  System/370 mode, ESA/370 mode (which supports 370-XA and
ESA/370 operating systems), and Logically Partitioned (LPAR) mode.
When operating in LPAR mode, up to four logical partitions may be
defined.  The PR/SM feature also provides support for the Enhancement
for Multiple Preferred Guests of VM/XA System Product when operating
in ESA/370 mode.  Up to six preferred guests (six V=F, or one V=R and
up to five V=F guests) are supported by the VM/XA System Product when
PR/SM is installed.  In addition, PR/SM increases the number of byte
multiplexer capable channels from the four standard to eight total
byte multiplexer capable channels.  (Note: The maximum channel
configuration is not changed)
       The enhanced capability of the PR/SM feature is available on
ES/3090 Models 180S, 200S, 300S, 280S, 400S, 500S, and 600S.  One
optional PR/SM feature may be installed on Models 180S, 200S, and
300S.  If the PR/SM feature is selected for multiprocessor (MP)
ES/3090 Models 280S, 400S, 500S, or 600S, it must be installed on
each side to maintain symmetry.  With PR/SM installed, three modes of
operation are available:  System/370 mode (not available on Models
300S, 500S and 600S), ESA/370 mode (which supports 370-XA and ESA/370
operating systems), and Logically Partitioned (LPAR) mode.  When
operating in LPAR mode the following enhancements are now available:
o   Capability to define up to 7 logical partitions (14 for a
    multiprocessor when physically partitioned).
o   Capability to define a second System/370 channel set.  This
    support permits two System/370 channel sets to be defined to each
    MVS/370 or VM/SP HPO configuration.  Each channel set can have up
    to 16 channels for MVS/370 and up to 32 channels for VM/SP HPO.
    NOTE: Any System/370 logical partition activated with two channel
    sets will decrease the maximum number of logical partitions that
    can be concurrently activated.  For example, a maximum of three
    System/370 mode logical partitions each with two channel sets can
    be concurrently activated along with a fourth logical partition
    which, if operating in System/370 mode, can have only one channel
    set.
       The PR/SM feature also provides support for the Enhancement
for Multiple Preferred Guests of VM/XA System Product when operating
in ESA/370 mode.  Up to six preferred guests (six V=F, or one V=R and
five V=F guests) are supported by the VM/XA System Product when PR/SM
is installed.
TECHNOLOGY
The IBM ES/3090 Model 100S uses proven IBM 3090 design and
technology.
PERFORMANCE
PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHT:  The ES/3090 Model 100S provides approximately
1.0 to 1.3 times the internal throughput rate of the ES/4381 Model
91E with MVS/SP (TM) Version 3 Release 1.0.
       The following internal throughput rate (ITR) ratios are based
on measurements and projections for the operating environments
specified below.
MVS:  The MVS performance in a commercial environment using MVS/SP
Version 3 Release 1.0 is as follows:

PARTITIONED PERFORMANCE:  The performance of logical partitions in a
PR/SM feature environment is  a function of the number of partitions,
their configurations, the operating systems and performance tuning
parameters.
       On the ES/3090 Model 100S, the internal throughput rate (ITR)
ratios for a workload running in a logical partition versus running
in basic mode are projected to be approximately equivalent to those
on other ES/3090 uniprocessor models.
       Measurements were made in a controlled environment using
standard performance workloads and methodology.  The actual
throughput improvements that any user will experience will vary
depending upon  considerations such as the amount of multiprogramming
in the user's job stream, the I/O configuration, and the workload
processed.  Therefore, no assurance can be given that an individual
user will achieve throughput improvements equivalent to the
performance ratios stated here.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  The minimum configurations for IBM ES/3090
Model 100S include the following:

IBM 3092 PROCESSOR CONTROLLER:  The IBM 3370 Model A2, the IBM 3206
Model 110, and the IBM 3864 Model 2 with Auto-Call Unit feature
(#5801) will be plant merged with the processor unit and will be
shipped with the processor complex unless otherwise specified by the
customer.  The IBM ES/3090 Model 100S Licensed Internal Code
(microcode) and diagnostics will be stored on the IBM 3370 and will
be exercised with the processor complex when plant merged.  When the
I/O is not plant merged, its arrival at the installation location
must be coordinated by the customer for installation with the IBM
ES/3090 Model 100S.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS:  The IBM ES/3090 Model 100S will be
supported at general availability by the following operating systems:
o   MVS
    -   MVS/System Product Version 3 Release 1.0 and subsequent
        releases.
    -   MVS/System Product Version 2 Release 1.3 and subsequent
        releases.
    -   MVS/System Product Version 1 Release 3.5 and subsequent
        release.
           Notes
    1.  The Vector Facility is supported by MVS/System Product
        Version 3 Release 1.0, Version 2 Release 1.7 and subsequent
        releases, and Version 2 Release 1.3 with the Vector Facility
        Enhancement.
    2.  MVS/370 does not support the Vector Facility, Expanded
        Storage, or greater than 16 channels per channel set.
    3.  Specific PTFs for the above listed operating system versions
        must be applied and may be obtained from the IBM Support
        Center.
o   VM
    -   VM/XA System Product Releases 1 and 2.
    -   VM/XA Systems Facility Release 2.
    -   VM/SP HPO Release 4.2 and subsequent release.
    -   Guest operating systems utilizing ESA/370 are supported by
        VM/XA SP Release 2.

        the Partitioned Multiprocessing (PMP) feature and the High
        Performance Option (HPO) Loosely-Coupled facility are not
        supported.

    configuration requirements.
o   EREP
    -   The ES/3090 Model 100S will be supported by the then current
        release of the IBM Environmental Record Editing and Printing
        Program (EREP).
o   IOCP
    -   IOCP Version 3.1 supports MVS, VM, and stand-alone versions.
o   LPAR MODE
           The Logically Partitioned (LPAR) mode of operation will be
    supported by the following operating systems:
    -   MVS
        --  MVS/System Product Version 3 Release 1.0 and subsequent
            releases.
        --  MVS/System Product Version 2 Release 1.7 and subsequent
            releases.  IMS/VS, including the Extended Recovery
            Facility (XRF), will be supported when operating in a
            logical partition.  CICS/MVS Version 2 Release 1 Extended
            Recovery Facility (XRF) will be supported when operating
            in a logical partition.
        --  MVS/System Product Version 2 Release 1.3.
        --  MVS/System Product Version 1 Release 3.5 and subsequent
            release.
               The RMF support for four logical partitions is
        provided by APAR OY11330.
        NOTE: Specific PTFs for the above listed operating system
        versions must be applied and may be obtained from the IBM
        Support Center.
    -   VM
        --  VM/XA SP Release 2 will be supported in a logical
            partition for test and development purposes only.  This
            support does not include V=R or V=F guest support.  If
            VM/XA functions are desired, such as support of many CMS
            users or testing of multiple guest operating systems,
            VM/XA SP Release 1 or Release 2 with support for multiple
            preferred guests should be considered for operation in
            ESA/370 mode instead of the logical partitioning function
            of the PR/SM feature.
        --  VM/System Product High Performance
            Option Release 4.2 and subsequent release.
        --  VM/System Product Release 5 and
            subsequent release.
    -   VSE
        --  VSE/SP Version 3 Release 2.

ENHANCED PR/SM CAPABILITIES:  The Logically Partitioned (LPAR) mode
of operation on ES/3090 Models 180S, 200S, 300S, 280S, 400S, 500S,
and 600S will be supported by the following operating systems:
o   MVS
    -   MVS/System Product Version 3.
    -   MVS/System Product Version 2 Release 1.7 and subsequent
        releases.  IMS/VS, including the Extended Recovery Facility
        (XRF), will be supported when operating in a logical
        partition.  CICS/MVS Version 2 Release 1 Extended Recovery
        Facility (XRF) will be supported when operating in a logical
        partition.  (Maximum central storage supported is 256Mb.)
    -   MVS/System Product Version 2 Release 1.3 supports execution
        on up to two logical processors when operating in a logical
        partition.  (Maximum central storage supported is 256Mb.)
    -   MVS/System Product Version 1 Release 3.5 and subsequent

        release support execution on up to two logical processors
        when operating in a logical partition.
    Notes
    1.  The Vector Facility is supported by MVS/System Product
        Version 3 Release 1.0, Version 2 Release 1.7 and subsequent
        releases, and Version 2 Release 1.3 with the Vector Facility
        Enhancement.
    2.  MVS/370 does not support the Vector Facility, Expanded
        Storage, greater than 16 channels per channel set or greater
        than 64Mb of central storage.
    3.  The RMF support for up to seven logical partitions is
        provided by APAR OY14757.
    4.  Specific PTFs for the above listed operating system versions
        must be applied and may be obtained from the IBM Support
        Center.
o   VM
    -   VM/XA SP Release 2 will be supported in a logical partition
        for test and development purposes only.  This support does
        not include V=R or V=F guest support.  If VM/XA functions are
        desired, such as support of many CMS users or testing of
        multiple guest operating systems, VM/XA SP Release 1 or
        Release 2 with support for multiple preferred guests should
        be considered for operation in ESA/370 mode instead of the
        logical partitioning function of the PR/SM feature.
    -   VM/System Product High Performance Option Release 4.2 and
        subsequent release support execution on up to two logical
        processors when operating in a logical partition.  VM/SP HPO
        supports a maximum central storage size of 64Mb.
    -   VM/System Product Release 5 and subsequent release.
o   VSE
    -   VSE/SP Version 3 Release 2.
    -   VSE/SP Version 3 Release 1 and APAR DY36770.
    -   VSE/SP Version 2 Release 1 and APAR DY36770.
    -   VSE/Advanced Function Version 2 Release 1 and APAR DY36770.
    NOTE: VSE supports a maximum central storage size of 16Mb and a
    maximum of 16 channels.  VSE supports one logical processor and
    does not support Expanded Storage or the Vector Facility.
o   TPF
    -   TPF Version 2 Release 3 and subsequent release supports only
        dedicated processors in a logical partition and environments
        where TPF-specific processor RPQs are not required.  TPF
        Version 2 Release 3 supports one logical processor when
        operating in a logical partition.  TPF does not support
        Expanded Storage or the Vector Facility.
o   IOCP
    -   IOCP Version 3.2 supports MVS, VM, and stand-alone versions.
COMPATIBILITY:  Any program (including its programming support)
written for ESA/370 mode or System/370 mode operates on an IBM
ES/3090 Model 100S in that mode, provided that the program:
o   Is not time dependent.
o   Does not depend on the presence of system facilities (such as
    storage capacity, I/O equipment, or optional features) when the
    facilities are not included in the configuration.
o   Does not depend on the absence of system facilities when the
    facilities are included in the configuration.
o   Does not depend on results or functions that are defined in the
    appropriate Principles of Operation manual as being unpredictable
    or model dependent.
o   Does not depend on the results or functions that are defined in
    the ES/3090 Processor Complex S Models Functional Characteristics
    and Configuration Guide (SA22-7127) as being deviations from the
    appropriate Principles of Operation manual.
o   In ESA/370 Mode, recognizes the presence of interception format 2
    using instructions parameter fields B and C on interception of
    the SIE instruction.  See IBM System/370 Extended Architecture
    Interpretive Execution (SA22-7095) for additional information.
o   Does not depend (for System/370 mode) on the presence of the
    2K-byte page size, or the presence of storage protection keys
    associated with 2K-byte blocks of storage.
       Any program written for 370-XA mode operates in ESA/370 mode;
any problem state program written for System/370 operates in ESA/370
mode, and any problem state program written for System/360 operates
in System/370 mode or ESA/370 mode, provided that the program:
o   Observes the limitations in the preceding statements.
o   Does not depend on any programming support facilities that are
    not provided or that have been modified.
o   Takes into account other changes made that affect compatibility
    between modes.  These changes are described in the IBM ESA/370
    Principles of Operation (SA22-7200) and in the IBM System/370
    Principles of Operation (GA22-7000).
       LPAR Mode -- In general, any program, including its
programming support, that complies with the compatibility statements
for the IBM ES/3090 Model 100S will operate in a logical partition
with the following exceptions:
o   VM/XA Migration Aid, VM/XA Systems Facility, and VM/XA System
    Product Release 1 are not supported in a logical partition.
o   VM/XA System Product Release 2 is only supported for test and
    development environments when operating in a logical partition.
o   When operating in a logical partition, the CPUID presented to
    that logical partition is not the same as when operating in
    System/370 or ESA/370 modes.  This may impact operation of
    software products that use the CPUID field.  Additional

PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:  Site preparation for the ES/3090 S Models
is the responsibility of the customer.  Information regarding space,
power, cooling, and customer supplied cables can be found in the
following manuals:
o   TNL (GN22-2367) to IBM ES/3090 Processor Complex Installation
    Manual -- Physical Planning (GC22-7080)
o   IBM ES/3090 Processor Complex Installation Manual -- Physical
    Planning (GC22-7080)
CABLE ORDERS:  The above manuals also contain details on customer
supplied cables as well as cables to be ordered from IBM.  Cable
length restrictions are also detailed in these publications for the
ES/3090 Processor Complex.
INSTALLABILITY:  The approximate system installation time for the
ES/3090 Model 100S is 10 hours.
       This assumes the IBM 3370 Direct Access Storage Model A02, the
IBM 3206 Display Stations Model 110 and the IBM 3864 Modem Model 2
and Auto-Call Unit feature (#5801) will be plant-merged with the
ES/3090 Processor Complex.
       The approximate field model upgrade time from the ES/3090
Model 100S to ES/3090 Model 120S is 13 hours.  This assumes the
prerequisite ECs and MESs are installed prior to the model upgrade.
       Approximate field installation time for the ES/3090 Model 100S
PR/SM feature is 9 hours.
       The above installation times do not include time to install
any additional hardware features (i.e., additional central storage,
Expanded Storage, channels, etc.).
I/O SUPPORT:  IBM devices previously announced for attachment to
models of the IBM 3090 are also supported for attachment to the
ES/3090 Model 100S with the exception of the 3850 Mass Storage
Subsystem (MSS).  RPQs for devices, including the 3850 MSS, will be
accepted immediately but processing will not begin for 90 days.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL
       The ES/3090 Model 100S continues to maintain the same level of
data integrity and security inherent in the design of the ES/3090
Processor Complex.
o   Key controlled storage protection (store/fetch)
o   Low address storage protection
o   Storage error checking and correction
o   Parity and other internal error checking
o   Segment protection (System/370 mode)
o   Block multiplexer channel command retry
o   Clear reset of registers and main storage
       Additionally, ESA/370 includes page protection capability by
which a page of virtual storage can be marked as unmodifiable.
       User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY, SERVICEABILITY
Numerous characteristics of the IBM 3090 design assist in providing a
high degree of availability and minimizing user downtime for the IBM
ES/3090 Model 100S including:
o   The ability to vary central storage off-line in increments of two
    megabytes.
o   The ability to vary channels off-line in single channel
    increments.
o   Automated approach to problem diagnosis and isolation.
o   Channel recovery.
o   Instruction retry.
o   Error checking and correction for processor storage.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
IBM CREDIT CORPORATION FINANCING:  Term leases and installment
payment plans are available for commercial and state and local
government customers.
ELIGIBLE MACHINE UNDER ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION FOR IBM MACHINES:
Not applicable; this machine is not subject to end-user certification
when purchased at the single unit purchase price.
WARRANTY PERIOD:  One year.
