Overview

The IBM eServer p5 model 570 Rack-mount Server (9117-570) gives you a modular mid-range solution for managing e-business computing requirements.

The p5-570 uses a 4U rack-mounted server drawer as its basic building block and can be configured with one to four drawers in a single rack.

With two processor card positions per drawer, the p5 model 570 is available in 2-, 4-, 8-, 12-, and 16-way configurations.

The symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) server uses 2-way processor cards with state-of-the-art, 64-bit, copper-based, POWER5™ microprocessors running at either 1.5 GHz, 1.65 GHz, or 1.9 GHz. Each processor card has 36 MB of Level 3 cache and 8 slots for memory DIMMs. The base 2 GB of system memory can be expanded up to 512 GB in a four-drawer system.

Each drawer of a p5-570 system contains six disk drive bays and six 3.3-volt PCI-X slots. With up to 24 disk bays, the model 570 can accommodate up to 3,523.2 GB of internal disk storage. Each drawer can also hold two DVD-RAM or DVD-ROM drives.

Other integrated features include:

Dynamic logical partitioning (LPAR), with optional micropartitioning, and Capacity on Demand (CoD) are supported on the p5 model 570.

The p5-570 is supported with the IBM eServer® pSeries® Cluster 1600 running Cluster Systems Management (CSM) V1.4 (AIX® and LINUX). For hardware control using CSM, an HMC is required.

Description

Summary of standard features for eServer p5 model 570:

Capacity on Demand

The Capacity on Demand (CoD) suite of offerings provides permanent nondisruptive growth as well as temporary additional capacity for short term processing needs.

Available for a fee, CoD allows additional processors and memory to be brought on line as they are needed to meet increasing workload demands. If the system is configured for dynamic LPAR, this can be accomplished without impacting operations and avoiding costly downtime.

These features have significant value for users who want to upgrade without disruption, enhance their system RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) characteristics, or simply grow with a finer level of granularity. The CoD features allow a system to be manufactured (or upgraded) with inactive processors and memory.

The hardware is delivered with these features built in, ready to be activated when needed. It can turned on by ordering processor or memory activation features. An activation code entered at the HMC enables the resource either permanently or temporarily, depending on which activation feature is ordered.

Types of CoD Activations

Permanent CUoD for Processors and Permanent CUoD for Memory are activations that permanently enable inactive processors or memory for future use.

On/Off CoD enables users to temporarily activate processors and memory. Processors and memory may be activated and turned off an unlimited number of times whenever the client desires additional processing resources. This offering provides a system administrator an interface at the HMC to manage the activation and deactivation of resources. A monitor resides on the server and logs the usage activity. Clients must send this usage data to IBM monthly. A bill is then generated based on the total amount of processor and memory resources utilized, in increments of processor and memory (1 GB) days.

Reserve CoD represents an "autonomic" way to activate temporary capacity. Reserve CoD enables the user to place a quantity of inactive processors into the server's Shared Processor Pool, which then become available to the pool's resource manager. When the server recognizes the number of base (purchased/active) processors assigned across uncapped partitions have been 100% utilized, and at least 10% of an additional processor is needed, then a processor day (good for a 24-hour period) is charged against the Reserve CoD account balance. Another processor day will be charged for each additional processor put into use based on the 10% utilization rule. After a 24-hour period elapses, and there is no longer a need for the additional performance, no processor days will be charged until the next performance spike.

Trial Capacity on Demand (Trial CoD) is a function delivered with all pSeries servers having inactive CoD processors or memory.

Servers with inactive CoD processors or memory will be capable of using a one-time, no-cost activation for a maximum period of 30 consecutive days. This enhancement allows for benchmarking of CoD resources or can be used to provide immediate access to inactive resources while the purchase of permanent or temporary activations is pending.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

IBM eServer p5 570 is capable as of August 31, 2004, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Statement of general direction

IBM plans to extend the capabilities of the IBM eServer p5 product line by introducing support for the i5/OS operating system. This support is planned for selected eServer p5 570 and future high-end eServer p5 models. i5/OS support will provide additional flexibility for large-scale server consolidation where AIX 5L and/or Linux is the primary operating system. i5/OS support will be limited to one processor on selected p5 570 models and up to two on selected high-end models. This capability is planned to be available in the first half 2005.

IBM Tivoli® Security

Overview

Tivoli security-ready clients and agents are planned to be pre-installed on eServer POWER5™ servers running AIX® 5L V5.2 beginning in August 2004. Pre-installed Tivoli security-ready clients and agents for POWER4+™ and POWER4™ pSeries® servers running AIX 5L V5.2 also are planned to be available beginning in August 2004. IBM intends to pre-install security-ready clients and agents on eServer® and pSeries POWER™ servers that support AIX 5L V5.3 in the future.

The pre-installed security clients and agents software, when coupled with optional and extra cost server-based IBM Tivoli security management solution offerings, give eServer and pSeries customers security capabilities to help address a fundamental and heightened customer need for more secure on demand systems.

Tivoli security (identity) management solutions offer critical layers of additional defense beyond the traditional perimeter defense provided by firewalls: antivirus software, intrusion detection software, a security control layer, and a security policy compliance layer.

The Tivoli control layer determines which server users can access and what users may view and do. The Tivoli security compliance layer helps to ensure that customers are in, and remain in, compliance with security policies while helping assess security risks and initiating responses to security events.

Highlights IBM Tivoli security-ready clients/agents: Now every eServer pSeries POWER5, POWER4+, and POWER4 server with AIX 5L V5.2 is available with pre-installed Tivoli security-ready client and agent software.

To use each Tivoli security-ready client or agent, acquisition of the following corresponding server-based Tivoli security management product offering is required.

When pre-installed, the security-ready clients/agents help to simplify the implementation and enablement of Tivoli security management solutions. Homologation — Telecom environmental testing (Safety and EMC): Homologation approval for specific countries has been initiated with the IBM Homologation and Type Approval (H&TA) organization in LaGaude.

This IBM pSeries model and applicable features meet the environmental testing requirements of the country Telecom and have been designed and tested in compliance with the Full Quality Assurance Approval (FQAA) process as delivered by the British Approval Board for Telecom (BABT), the U.K. Telecom Regulatory authority.

Product safety/Country testing/Certification

General requirements

The p5 model 570 is in compliance with IBM Corporate Bulletin C-B 0-2594-000 Statement of Conformity of IBM Product to External Standard (Suppliers Declaration).

Hardware requirements

The p5 model 570 must be installed in a new or existing 7014-T00 or T42 rack with power distribution features 9176, 9177, 9178, or 9188, or equivalent rack. This provides:

The design of the p5 model 570 is optimized for use in an IBM 7014-T00 or T42 rack. Both the front cover and the processor flex cables occupy space on the front left side of an IBM 7014 rack that may not be available in typical non-IBM racks.

The SMP cables are designed specifically to support seamless (4-way node) upgradability and future concurrent maintenance features of these POWER5 systems. The use of non-IBM racks may limit your ability to exploit these ease-of-use, upgradability, and serviceability enhancements in the future.

Value Paks: Value Paks are available only for initial system orders. They provide a convenient way to order any of several configurations designed to meet typical customer requirements. Special reduced pricing is available when a system order satisfies specific configuration requirements for memory, disk drives, and processors. When a Value Pak is ordered, the configurator offers a choice of starting points that can be added onto.

Customers can configure systems with 2 to 16 processors and 2 to 16 processor activations. With the purchase of a Value Pak, for each paid processor activation, the customer is entitled to one processor activation at no additional charge, if the following requirements are met:

  1. The system must have at least two disk drives of at least 73.4 GB each.
  2. There must be at least 2 GB of memory installed for each activated processor.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system that is designed to proactively monitor events and transmit system inventory information to IBM on a periodic customer-defined timetable. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that maintains higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent will be made available to IBM service support representatives when they are helping answer your questions or diagnosing problems.

Each IBM machine is manufactured from parts that may be new or used. In some cases, a machine may not be new and may have been previously installed.

Warranty service: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service. An IBM technician will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone. You must follow IBM's problem determination and resolution procedures. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

Customer replaceable unit (CRU) service

IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM at any time on your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU. Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU, at your request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge under the type of warranty service specified below, On-site Service. IBM specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU, and you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement.

The following are designated as Tier 1 CRU parts:

On-site service

IBM On-site repair limited, next-business-day, on-site response time, latest call registration 12:00 p.m., 5 days per week by 9 hours, (excluding public and national holidays).

IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose.

Warranty service upgrade

This type of repair service provides a response objective and is not a guarantee.

The designation of a part as IOR or CRU is independent of response time. It is possible that when upgrading to a warranty with improved response time, the appropriate problem resolution will still be to ship a CRU part to you for that installation. IBM will replace a CRU part at your request at no charge, if the system is covered by a same-day warranty service upgrade.

ServiceSuite™ and ServiceElect (formerly ESA) maintenance: For ServiceElect (Z125-5510) and ServiceSuite (Z125-5745) Statements of Work:

Maintenance services: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service upgrades depending on the type of service specified for your machine. Machine installation: Installation is performed by IBM. IBM will install the machine in accordance with the IBM installation procedures for the machine. In the United States, contact IBM at 800-IBM-SERV (426-7378) and in other countries contact the local IBM office.

The Machine Installation Guide specifies site preparation, physical requirements and installation (operating) environment and any cabling included in the installation along with the approximate installation time in hours. Customer requests for installation of items not covered in the installation guide may be performed at IBM's hourly service rate designated for the machine.

Licensed machine code: IBM Machine Code is licensed for use by a customer on the IBM machine for which it was provided by IBM under the terms and conditions of the IBM License Agreement for Machine Code, to enable the machine to function in accordance with its specifications, and only for the capacity authorized by IBM and for which the customer has paid. Machine code may sometimes be referred to as "Licensed Internal Code" or "LIC" in documentation or on the machine with which the machine code was delivered. Should it become necessary for IBM to make changes to machine code, IBM will make the changes available at the IBM eServer p5 technical support page on ibm.com. If the machine does not function as warranted and your problem can be resolved through your application of machine code changes, you are responsible for downloading and installing the designated machine code changes as IBM specifies. You may request IBM to install machine code changes; however, you may be charged for the installation of such changes.

Educational allowance: A reduced charge is available to qualified education customers. The educational allowance may not be added to any other discount or allowance.
