    Title

IBM OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 SMP Feature Availability

    Overview

The Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) Feature is now available as an update for all licensed users of OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4. As the OS/2 offering for selected systems with multiple processors in a single server, the SMP Feature of OS/2 Warp Server Advanced provides the same functionality announced earlier this year, but takes advantage of the additional performance provided by multiple processor SMP hardware.

The OS/2 Warp Server products are complete network operating systems providing all the functions and features you need for an advanced application server platform. They are for small-to medium-sized businesses, departmental workgroups, and large corporations and institutions.

As a powerful application server foundation, the OS/2 Warp Server products provide integrated file and print sharing, sophisticated yet easy-to-use systems management, backup and recovery, remote connection, advanced printing, LAN internet access, and an easy-to-use and customizable GUI.

The overall productivity increase found in the OS/2 Warp Server Advanced product announced in February 1996 is further enhanced with the SMP Feature by putting all the resources you need -- files, printers, peripherals, and applications -- right at your fingertips. Remote connection services give users full, secure access to the LAN from home or on the road. Advanced printing services give you access to virtually any type of printer, including PostScript and non-PostScript printers, and high-speed host printers that handle up to 708 pages per minute.

The OS/2 Warp Server products include some of the most powerful and comprehensive backup and recovery services available today. These services make it easy to back up your server to any kind of medium, including tape, optical disks, hard drives, or diskettes.

OS/2 Warp Server Advanced provides unparalleled systems-management control through Tivoli's TME 10 NetFinity Server packaged with the SMP Feature. Administrators can get detailed information about any system on the network. They can use OS/2 Warp Server Advanced to track the performance of networked systems. If users are having problems with their systems, OS/2 Warp Server will even allow your administrator to look directly at their users screens and operate their systems -- all without leaving the help desk. It's the fastest way to get your employees back to work.

    Description

The SMP Feature for OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4, builds on the technology found in one of the industry's leading and most robust application server platforms - IBM OS/2 Warp v3, which has been enhanced for symmetrical multiprocessor support. Adding the SMP Feature preserves all the major functions found in OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 and enables them to run on SMP hardware. Replacing OS/2 for SMP 2.11 and architectually able to support SMP systems with one to 16 processors, the SMP Feature has focused on current industry standards for two- to six-processor SMP platforms.

The OS/2 Warp Server Advanced SMP Feature (SMP Feature) contains the following components and functions:

Note: The additional functions shipped on the second CD with OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 will operate without change with the SMP Feature.

The SMP Feature provides the platform on which the SMP-safe IBM Software Servers for OS/2 Warp are installed. The IBM Software Servers that currently support SMP are:

While Lotus Notes 4.1 is certified to run on the SMP Feature, Lotus Notes Version 4.5 is designed to fully exploit the SMP Feature by taking advantage of the scalable performance gained by increasing the number of processors. See individual Software Server announcement materials for the level of SMP support they provide.

TME 10 NetFinity Server, Version 4.0

The TME 10 NetFinity Server, Version 4.0, for OS/2 is being offered with the SMP Feature and is a part of IBM's family of IBM Software Servers. These modular application servers enable you to rapidly implement client/server applications and extend application capabilities to meet future business requirements.

The TME 10 NetFinity Server provides an affordable, comprehensive solution for managing your distributed LAN environment. Use-Based Charges - Clarification

    Use-Based Features

A Proof of Entitlement for OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 (including the SMP Feature) program authorizes the use of this program on a single server. An additional fee must be paid for each user (user ID) accessing the server, regardless of the operating system running on that user's computer or workstation. This is referred to as a Use-based Feature. Use-based Features previously purchased for the replaced OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 can be used for OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 (including SMP Feature). Purchase of a Use-based Feature authorizes a user to access all OS/2 Warp Servers and OS/2 LAN Servers in the enterprise. Since the charge is per user ID (not machine), there is no additional charge for that user ID to access the server from a home computer or remote workstation.

    Use-Based Feature Upgrades

OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 may be purchased at a reduced price as an upgrade from OS/2 Warp Server, OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 or 4.0, or from other competitive servers. A Use-based Feature must be purchased for each user (user ID) who accesses the OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 upgrade product. Upgrades from OS/2 LAN Server Requesters and from competitive requesters are available. LAN Server 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and other requesters are not authorized to access OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 unless a Use-based Feature Upgrade has been purchased. Customers that have acquired Warp Connect, Version 3.0 do not need to purchase a Warp Server Use Based Feature or Use Based Feature Upgrade.

    Exceptions

In some limited circumstances, purchase of a Use-based Feature is not required. These exceptions are for user ID's who do not use the file services, print services, remote access, or systems management functions of OS/2 Warp Server Advanced SMP Feature, but who only use OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 SMP Feature as an application server, or solely for the purpose of configuring or administering the server.

    Product Positioning

With Intel's release of its multiprocessor specification, the majority of the hardware vendors have embraced SMP technology as a standard for their server offerings. This technology provides a lower cost, price/performing Intel platform for running mission-critical applications. More and more applications such as Lotus Notes, DB2/2, Btrieve, and Oracle are being developed to exploit the SMP capabilities offered by the hardware vendors. The OS/2 Warp Server Advanced SMP Feature will provide a server operating system with increased processing power, increased capacity and scalability demanded by the growing application server market.

The SMP capability for OS/2 Warp Server Advanced is a critical addition to an already feature-rich server operating system. The SMP Feature offers the speed and scalability that a substantial number of businesses are now demanding for their application and database servers. The SMP feature exploits two- to six-way SMP systems, but architectually it supports systems equipped with up to sixteen (16) processors. Internal testing has shown impressive performance gains. For details, see Performance Considerations in this announcement.

    Software Requirements

The operating system requirements for the SMP Feature are as follows:

    OEM Operating Systems

IBM certification testing has been completed on various OEM hardware and operating systems. IBM OS/2 Warp Server Advanced, Version 4 SMP Feature, including requesters, are supported on those OEM platforms that are listed in Prodigy and CompuServe under OS/2 Forums. Search using the key word OS/2 to find various forums related to OS/2 products including OS/2 Warp Server.

    Performance Considerations

The SMP Feature has been extensively performance-tuned to allow all the processors in an SMP system to be effectively used. Parallel workloads driving an application server using multiple processors can deliver performance and throughput far exceeding that obtainable on the single-processor version of OS/2 Warp Server Advanced. SMP-efficient applications can achieve 300% or greater performance when running the SMP Feature on a four processor SMP platform as compared to a single-processor installation. Database server applications, Lotus Notes, and other application servers also achieve significant scaling on the SMP Feature. For file and print workloads, the scalability is not as dramatic due to the superior performance of OS/2 Warp Server Advanced single processor for these tasks.

As compared to OS/2 2.11 SMP on identical hardware, all workloads show large performance improvements on the SMP Feature; increases of 20% to 150% over OS/2 2.11 SMP are not uncommon. Applications and middleware (such as DB2) that explicitly support and exploit the new performance function provided in the SMP Feature should see performance improvements up to 250% over OS/2 2.11 SMP. These new performance functions include but are not limited to:

In addition to these new functions provided by the SMP Feature, performance improvements were obtained through many system changes which are transparent to the user:
