DESCRIPTION
IBM Operating  System/2 Extended  Edition Version  1.0 is  a new,
functionally rich operating system for  the IBM Personal System/2
Models 50,  60, 70 and  80, the  IBM Personal Computer  AT Models
099, 239, 319  and 339, and the IBM Personal  Computer XT286. The
Extended Edition is planned to be  the operating system for users
of  communications   and  relational  database   applications  on
supported IBM  Personal Computers and Personal  System/2 systems.
Installation tools  support installing  an individually  selected
mixture of Communications Manager and Database Manager functions.
The   installation   tools  feature   full-screen,   interactive,
installation menus with on-line helps. Once the chosen mixture is
installed on  the fixed  disk, program  segments are  loaded into
memory as required to perform  the functions.  All the facilities
of  IBM  Operating  System/2 Standard  Edition  Version  1.0  are
available in IBM Operating System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.0.
The Communications  Manager provides communications  services for
applications  written  for  the  OS/2  protect  mode  environment
between IBM Personal Computer and  IBM Personal System/2 and host
systems.  These   services  provide  communication   to  Personal
Computers  and systems  over a  wide  range of  local and  remote
connectivities  including  SDLC,  Distributed  Function  Terminal
(DFT) mode to  an IBM 3174 or 3274 and  asynchronous links. These
connectivities  utilize  LU6.2,  3270   data  stream  (LU2),  and
asynchronous protocols.   Emulation for  multiple terminal  types
operating concurrently is provided. File  transfer and a keyboard
remap  facility  are supported.  Several  programming  interfaces
(PIs) allow  programs to take advantage  of the power of  the IBM
Personal Computers  and IBM Personal  System/2 and  to facilitate
programmer productivity in applications development.
The  Database  Manager,   operating  in  an  OS/2   protect  mode
environment, supports the relational  data model, consistent with
IBM DB2 and IBM SQL/DS. The  Database Manager makes extensive use
of IBM database technology used in  SQL/DS and DB2 host products;
in  particular, the  Database  Manager  is designed  to  preserve
database   consistency,   integrity,    and   performance.   Data
definition,  retrieval,  update  and   control  applications  are
supported  by  the  Structured  Query  Language  (SQL).  End-user
facilities are  available for  data entry,  data edit,  query and
report  writing. The  user  interfaces for  data  entry and  data
retrieval  operations   can  be  tailored   to  the   end  user's
requirements without  the need  for programming  using the  Query
Manager's support for customized panels and menus.
The Database  Manager supports the  relational model of  data, in
which data  is externally  structured in the  form of  simple and
easy to  understand tables. Data  is organized in  rows (records)
and columns (fields). The user defines and accesses data in terms
of  tables  and operations  on  these  tables. This  simple  data
format, along  with high-level application creation  tools, means
that the user  (and the application programmer) does  not have to
understand complex  physical data structures and  access methods.
Implementation of  the relational  model is  designed to  provide
application program  portability and  ease-of-use characteristics
for database design, creation and access.
The  SQL  supported by  the  Database  Manager is  the  Operating
System/2 participant of the Database Interface element of the IBM
Systems Application  Architecture. SQL is a  powerful, high-level
data definition and manipulation language  in which users specify
what they  want to do, not  how to do  it.  SQL is used  for data
definition,  retrieval,  insertion, deletion  and  updating.  SQL
supports  arithmetic operations  on retrieved  values. The  query
functions  support selective  retrieval from  single or  multiple
tables and dynamic sorting of the set of resulting rows. Built-in
functions  include   summation,  grouping,  ordering   and  basic
statistics (for example, calculate an average  of the values in a
column).   SQL  statements  can  be  entered  interactivately  or
embedded in an IBM C/2  source application program. A precompiler
processes the source  program to prepare embedded  SQL statements
for subsequent application program compilation and execution.
The Query Manager component of  the Database Manager provides end
user facilities for database definition, query, update and report
preparation. A prompted interface is  provided. It is designed to
give easy to use access to the  database for users with little or
no  data  processing  experience. This  interface  supports  Data
Definition,  Data Entry/Edit,  Query  and  Report functions.  The
Query and Report functions are extensive  subsets of those in the
IBM  Query  Management  Facility  (QMF)   on  IBM  host  systems.
Experienced users are  provided a command interface  and tools to
develop complete  database entry/retrieval  facilities customized
for the end user.
IBM  Operating   System/2  is  a   participant  in   IBM  Systems
Application  Architecture,  a  collection  of  selected  software
interfaces,  conventions,   and  protocols   for  which   initial
specifications  have  been  published.  IBM  Systems  Application
Architecture is to be the framework for development of consistent
applications  across  the  future  offerings  of  the  major  IBM
computing  environments  -  System/370, System/3X,  and  the  IBM
Personal Computers. IBM Systems Application Architecture consists
of  four related  elements, two  of  which are  new (Common  User
Access  and Common  Programming  Interface),  plus extensions  to
today's    existing    communication     architectures    (Common
Communications  Support).  IBM  Systems Application  Architecture
establishes the basis for Common Applications developed by IBM to
be consistent  across IBM  systems. Details  about the  functions
described  in the  preceding  paragraphs  are documented  in  the
manuals that are now available.

LIMITATIONS
GENERAL
System capacity: Users needing large data bases, large numbers of
programs   and  files,   or  execution   of  several   concurrent
applications  (requires segment  swap areas)  should assure  they
have  the capability  to expand  their hardfile  above 20MB,  and
their memory above  3.0 MB. For additional  information, refer to
the  IBM  Operating  System/2   Information  and  Planning  Guide
(G360-2650-01) and the Performance section of this announcement.
Base operating system Family API: The Family API does not include
Communications Manager or Database Manager functions.
The Communications Manager must be installed on C: drive only.
IBM   OPERATING    SYSTEM/2   EXTENDED   EDITION    VERSION   1.0
COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
LINE SPEEDS:  Line speeds may  be configured  up to 9600  BPS for
either ASCII terminal  emulation, or for programs  written to the
Asynchronous  Communications Device  Interface (ACDI).   However,
line  speed   configurability  does  not  guarantee   error  free

operation under all system loading conditions. Line speeds slower
than  the   maximum  rate  may   be  required   for  asynchronous
communications links.
Data TRANSMITTED FROM  a personal computer running  IBM Operating
System/2 Extended  Edition Version 1.0  can operate at  a maximum
rate if  not limited  by such  factors as  the modem  speed on  a
switched line. Data RECEIVED TO the personal computer running IBM
Operating  System/2 Extended  Edition  Version  1.0 may  have  to
operate at less than the maximum  rate in order to avoid hardware
input buffer overrun errors. The achievable rate depends on other
processes in  the personal  computer, such  as disk  activity and
operator keying  activity. The  errors on  received data  are the
result  of a  line  speed  selection that  is  too  high for  the
particular IBM  Operating System/2  Extended Edition  Version 1.0
system configuration and loading activity. Errors are reported to
the operator of ASCII terminal emulation, or are reported through
the ACDI to the application program. If errors are received, then
a slower line speed must be selected.
A multi-tasking example is a user  of an ASCII terminal emulation
session receiving data using the  data capture operation while at
the same  time keying in another  partition, for example  using a
text  editor. This  OS/2  protect mode  only  system including  a
single asynchronous port, receiving data,  with disk activity and
keying activity will typically run at 2400 bits per second.
A second multi-tasking example similar to the one just described,
except  that  the keying  activity  is  done  in  an IBM  PC  DOS
compatibility mode, would typically run at 1200 bits per second.
Specific hardware  support of asynchronous  communications speeds
of  up to  19,200  BPS will  be described  in  the IBM  Operating
System/2 Extended Edition Version 1.1 Availability Announcement.
SDLC supports an aggregate line speed of 19,200 BPS.

o Dump facility
o Patch facility
Other:
o Code  page switching  is  accomplished  through base  operating
system services.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS
IBM  Operating System/2  Extended Edition  Version  1.0 has  been
designed with two main performance goals. The first goal pertains
to the performance  of multiple tasks. In  this case, performance
is measured  in terms  of productivity.  This is  the ability  to
perform multiple  concurrent tasks,  and move  among them,  while
maintaining  responsiveness.  The  second goal  pertains  to  the
performance,  or  responsiveness  of specific  tasks.  Here,  the
performance is measured as the  elapsed time between the pressing
of a key and being able to perform the next operation.
Multiple Task Performance:
IBM  Operating System/2  Extended  Edition  Version 1.0  multiple
concurrent application  performance depends  on available  system
resources such as:
o Physical memory size
o Number of concurrently executing programs
o System priorities and timeslice designations
o File placement of system/application data
Performance   is   also   affected  by   the   segment   swapping
characteristics,    storage   reference    patterns,   and    the
characteristics  of  the  particular  data  being  processed.  In
general, users  should expect  that elapsed time  on a  series of
concurrent  applications  should be  less  than  the sum  of  the
individual component times under similar operating environments.
However,  users will  notice some  degradation  of specific  task
performance when running several  applications concurrently.  The
user will generally notice degradation  to the current foreground
(on   the  screen)   task   when   running  multiple   concurrent
applications.
Specific Task Performance:
When using the  Communications Manager of IBM  Operating System/2
Extended Edition Version 1.0 , users will typically find that the
performance of the 3270 communications  facility is comparable to
that of IBM  3270 Workstation Program V1.1. Users  will also find
that when running  APPC applications with IBM  Operating System/2
Extended  Edition  Version  1.0  over  an  SDLC  line,  that  the
performance is characterized by the SDLC line speed. Asynchronous
communications  performance will  be  primarily  dictated by  the

Asynchronous line speed. IBM  Operating System/2 Extended Edition
Version  1.0  allows users  to  perform  a foreground  task  with
minimal  performance  degradation,   while  communications  tasks
execute concurrently in the background.
It  is important  to note  that  with communications  facilities,
there are  many factors  that affect  performance. In  many cases
these factors are not part of the IBM Operating System/2 Extended
Edition Version 1.0 system. Examples include, but are not limited
to:
o Line speed
o Host delay
o Network delay

Performance considerations of  the Database Manager can  be found
in  the IBM  Operating System/2  Information  and Planning  Guide
(G360-2650-01)
The wide  range of  function provided  by IBM  Operating System/2
Extended Edition  Version 1.0  requires planning  to assure  that
sufficient  memory  and  hardfile  resources  are  available  for
balanced performance.  The following  worksheets are  designed to
aid in estimating the hardware configuration.
The  first worksheet  provides suggested  steps  to estimate  the
memory for major IBM Operating  System/2 Extended Edition Version
1.0 function. The  second worksheet provides the  steps necessary
to  estimate  hardfile  size for  major  IBM  Operating  System/2
Extended Edition Version 1.0 function.
The memory  estimates given are  for the concurrent  operation of
the  customer selected  IBM Operating  System/2 Extended  Edition
Version 1.0 tasks  and are designed to provide  a balance between
performance and memory. All estimates  are additive. By following
the worksheet format  and adding your applications  and user data
requirements,  your   memory  and   hardfile  estimates   can  be
determined.
Customers assume  responsibility for  determining and  installing
the proper memory and hardfile  capacities in their machines; for
the selection of the program(s)  to achieve the intended results;
and  for the  installation,  use and  results  obtained from  the
machines  and  program(s).  IBM does  not  warrant  or  otherwise
guarantee any  performance or usability  results implied  by this
data.   Customers   should   assure    that   adequate   hardware
configuration flexibility  exists to  accommodate change,  future
enhancements, new  customer applications and increased  user data
requirements.
IBM OPERATING  SYSTEM/2 EXTENDED  EDITION VERSION  1.0 ESTIMATING
WORKSHEET, MEMORY SIZE (MBYTES)
The numbers shown  are the recommended memory size  in Mbytes for
concurrent  operation   of  designated  IBM   Operating  System/2
Extended Edition  Version 1.0  functions. These  numbers  reflect
the  working set of OS/2 functions  listed, not the total size of
all of the code and  data  areas  that comprise the functions.

COMPATIBILITY TEST RESULTS
The  following  guidelines  should be  used  to  determine  which
particular IBM marketed products are supported by this product.
Support in no way implies that  the software or hardware has been
modified in  any way to take  full advantage of the  new features
and facilities of this product.
IBM, through the medium of  testing and evaluation, has attempted
to establish the extent to which  this product is able to exploit
the Software and Hardware listed in  this report. Due to the ever
increasing number  of permutations  of hardware  and software,  a
totally definitive test is not possible. IBM, therefore, does not
guarantee that additional incompatibilities will not occur.
The  following products  are compatible  with OPERATING  SYSTEM/2
EXTENDED EDITION V1.0 and will operate substantially as described
in their program documentation  unless indicated otherwise. Refer
to the notes at the end for more specific information.

NOTES:
1. Use of  the Keyboard Password  option from the  PS/2 Reference
Diskette is not supported.
2. On all PS/2  system units using fixed disk  sizes greater than
40Mb the following should be noted:
o The OS/2 FORMAT command displays  the incorrect number of heads
and cylinders during a format.  However the partition will format
correctly.
o The  OS/2   FDISK  command  will  display   incorrect  cylinder
information. The  cylinder size returned  is the capacity  of the
disk in Mb.
3. OS/2 will initialise the printer prior to each print job. This
has the effect of overriding any options selected on the printers
"User Front Panel".
4. Code page switching is not supported with the NLQ2 font.
5. OS/2 does not support code page switching with this printer.
6. This printer does not support code pages 865 and 860.
7. Code page switching is not supported by this adapter.
8. When  using this  mouse  with Displaywrite  4  the mouse  type
should be specified  as MICROSOFT SERIAL and  the attachment port
as COM1 (during Displaywrite 4  installation). The user must also
ensure that the  device drivers POINTDD.SYS and  MOUSEB05.SYS are
contained in the CONFIG.SYS file.
9. The  mouse  can  be  used  with  Storyboard  in  two  possible
configurations:
a. Mouse support for OS/2 Program Selector and Storyboard.
b. Mouse support for Storyboard only.
For mouse  support in  OS/2 Program  Selector and  Storyboard the
appropriate  device   statements  should   be  included   in  the
CONFIG.SYS file (POINTDD.SYS and MOUSEB05.SYS). Within Storyboard
the mouse  type selected  should be  'OTHER'. When  used in  this
configuration mouse  support is  screen resolution  dependent and
the mouse will not function in the following resolutions:
o 320x200 256 colors
o 640x480 16 colors
For mouse support  in Storyboard only, a mouse type  of IBM MOUSE
should   be   selected   from  within   Storyboard.   With   this
configuration there are no screen resolution restrictions.
10. On entering Displaywrite 4 the printer issues a page feed due
to the  MODE LPT1:,,P  statement in the  programs batch  file. To
stop this page feed the MODE LPT statement should be removed from
any batch files used to start the program.
11. The Displaywrite  4 print  options does not  send an  "End of
File" code  to the OS/2  print spooler  until a task  is selected
from the main  menu. To initiate printing the  user should select
another task.
12. When  using Displaywrite  4  the user  must  ensure that  the
display  mode has  been set  to MODE  CO80 from  the DOS  command
prompt.
13. Function selection tests for Printer  Function Tables are not
supported.
14. When installing  this product it is  advised not to  have any
background OS/2 tasks  in operation. Having background  tasks may
slow the installation process.
15. Issuing a print  command from within these  applications will
not result in printing until the user exits the application. This
is due to the  applications not sending an "End of  File" code to
the print spooler until the  user exits the application. Printing
may  be  forced  from  within the  application  by  pressing  the
following  key  sequence CTRL-ALT-PRTSCR.  For  more  information
refer to the OS/2 User Guide.
16. OS/2  session switching  using  ALT-ESC  while in  Storyboard
Picture Maker (Graphics Mode) is disabled.
17. Storyboard Picture Taker - This  product is not supported for
operation  with  OS/2.  Picture  Taker   uses  the  Print  Screen
interrupt which is implemented differently from DOS 3.3.
COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER SUPPORT FOR EUROPEAN KEYBOARDS
IBM  Operating System/2  Extended  Edition  Version 1.0  contains
pre-configured  communication  configuration  files  for  several
commonly  used  communication configurations.   These  files  are
pre-configured for US  keyboards. Also supplied are  all European
keyboard configurations in a separate file (ACSCFG.CFG). European
users are  able to  configure their system  for their  country by
using the  US configuration  file that  most closely  meets their
communication requirements and copying into  it from the supplied
library  their country  keyboard configuration  using the  method
described in the product publications.
PLANNING INFORMATION
