IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (Active Energy Manager, AEM) for Linux on System z, V4.1 is a cross-platform management solution designed to help you optimize resource use by measuring, monitoring, and managing the energy and thermal usage of your IT environment. AEM is an energy management software tool that is designed to give you a single view of actual energy use across multiple platforms in your infrastructure. AEM, an IBM Systems Director plug-in that is designed to be consistent across IBM platforms, also provides a source of energy management data that can be exploited by Tivoli® enterprise solutions such as IBM Tivoli Monitoring.

As data center managers face escalating energy and cooling costs, the pressures to reduce this burden are increasing. IBM's Active Energy Manager offering helps managers deal with this challenge and is designed to help save energy and cooling costs by giving clients a way to understand and control how much energy is being used and where it is being consumed in their data centers.

AEM is positioned as a key component of IBM's energy efficient technologies and services which are a part of IBM's Project Big Green, which began May 2007. It is delivered as part of the IBM Systems Director family and is included in the new enterprise data center strategy.

AEM V4.1 provides no-charge monitoring functions and a set of optional chargeable (fee-based) management functions. The monitoring functions are:

Description
Bottom rule

AEM V4.1, an IBM Systems Director V6.1 plug-in, is designed to simplify the management of energy consumption across multiple IBM and non-IBM systems. It can assist you in determining how to reallocate energy to additional servers without additional energy or cooling equipment. AEM tracks energy use over time. When energy is constrained, AEM is designed to allow it to be allocated on a server to server basis. AEM is designed to track and allocate energy consumption in a manner intended not to affect performance. Sensors and alerts can warn you if limiting energy to a server could affect performance.

AEM is designed to provide increased capability to control energy consumption and improve energy use efficiency, which can result in substantial savings and cost reductions. AEM is intended to help you:

By enabling you to meter energy use and trend data, AEM is designed to help reduce energy costs in the data center.

AEM is also designed to complement and integrate with higher-level management software such as Tivoli. AEM interfaces with the IBM Tivoli Monitoring products.

AEM V4.1 has open design and support for industry standards and enables heterogeneous physical and virtual management with support for multiple platforms and operating systems, which can help protect your IT investment.

AEM V4.1 enables management and monitoring across IBM Systems and non-IBM systems.

When the Active Energy Manager application runs on Linux for System z it can perform monitoring and management functions for all supported systems from a single console.

AEM V4.1 is designed to provide monitoring functions for devices that can connect to select power distribution units (PDUs). This enables monitoring functions for systems that do not have support for AEM, for example, older servers and low- and mid-range storage devices. When these systems are plugged into a PDU+ (a smart power strip), AEM is designed to be able to collect energy information from I/O drawers plugged into the PDU, providing a more complete view of energy used in the data center. New in this release is the addition of support for non-IBM PDUs, as well as UPSs as defined in the product support library.

AEM V4.1 provides no-charge monitoring functions and a set of optional chargeable (fee-based) management functions.

Power trending is a no-charge monitoring function of AEM that displays energy use for individual systems or groups of systems over time (in a graph or table format) to help enable clients to understand energy use trends within and across their systems.

Thermal trending is a no-charge monitoring function of AEM that displays information on the inlet and exhaust temperatures for individual systems one at a time to help enable clients to understand thermal characteristics of their systems. Incorporating this data into one centralized software-based energy use offering allows finite and localized temperature adjustments within the IT shop to help reduce energy costs for cooling.

Power Capping is included in the set of optional chargeable (fee-based) management functions. It is designed to allow a client to set a maximum energy level per system. If the system starts to consume more than the maximum level set, AEM is designed to throttle the processor to use less energy, which slows down the server. This feature is designed to come into play it if gets too warm in the data center. Setting the cap will ensure that the system will not use more than the cap value, thus allowing less power to be allocated to the system. Soft Power Capping, a new function in the V4.1 release, is the ability to set a power cap lower than a value that can be guaranteed. Group Capping, another new feature, will allow a user to set a power cap for a group of servers (such as all the servers in a rack).

Power Savings Mode is included in the set of optional chargeable (fee-based) management functions. Power Savings Mode is designed to potentially save up to 30% of processor energy use for IBM Power systems. It is designed to allow clients to manage their energy use as work activity shifts across various demands. Power Savings Mode is enabled via an on/off switch, which a client can schedule during times of low utilization, or if the function is supported on the system, can occur automatically, based on processor utilization.

AEM V4.1 offers additional facility provider support for monitoring environmental data from facility providers, such as SynapSense and Emerson Network Power. Additional features and enhancements to AEM V4.1 include:

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at

http://www.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager for Linux on System z, V4.1 is capable as of December 12, 2008, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

AEM V4.1, an IBM Systems Director V6.1 plug-in, is an energy management solution building block designed to help put the control of energy costs back in your hands. AEM is a cornerstone of the IBM energy management framework. This offering is designed to enable monitoring and management of energy use across systems within the IT infrastructure, which can help enhance the cost of computing through improved energy utilization and reduced labor cost.

Called Project Big Green, IBM's initiative targets corporate data centers where energy constraints and costs can limit their ability to grow. IBM intends to double computing capacity in its own data centers and use new technologies to reduce its own energy use by five billion kilowatt hours. IBM is redirecting $1 billion per year across its businesses, mobilizing the company's resources to dramatically increase the level of energy efficiency in IT. The plan includes new products, such as AEM, and services for IBM and its clients designed to sharply reduce data center energy consumption, helping to transform the world's business and public technology infrastructures into energy efficient data centers.

Active Energy Manager advances the IBM initiative to deliver price performance per square foot. This offering enables monitoring and management of energy usage across systems equipment within the IT and facility infrastructures, which enhances the cost of computing through improved energy utilization and reduced labor cost. Active Energy Manager provides a broader scope of energy information across systems within the data center while including a view of facilities equipment energy usage.

"Project Big Green" also reaffirms IBM's long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility:

Forty percent of data center operators report power demand outstripping supply. The new enterprise data center improves data center energy efficiency through exploitation of virtualization-enabled consolidation, resource optimization and active energy management (Data Center Power and Cooling challenge, Gartner, November 2007).

IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager is one of the system components of IBM's Project Big Green portfolio of products.

Active Energy Manager V4.1 is focused on multi-system resource management of energy across IBM servers and provides heterogeneous monitoring support for systems and IT facilities to help clients manage actual energy consumption.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
