US AND UK ENGLISH
The  products  previously  announced as IBM OS/2 Standard Edition
V1.1 English, part numbers 07F4879 (3.5")  and  07F4890  (5.25"),
program   number   5601-092,  and  associated  upgrades,  had  US
installation defaults  and  may  properly  be  considered  as  US
English   rather  than  UK  English.  Furthermore  they  did  not
incorporate the Device Drivers which are available separately  in
the  OS/2 V1.1 Device Driver Supplement, part numbers 38F3027 and
38F3038.
These  previously  announced  US  English  versions  of  IBM OS/2
Standard  Edition  V1.1,  p/n  07F4879  and  07F4890,  are  being
withdrawn  today  by  IBM Programming Announcement "Withdrawal of
IBM OS/2 Standard Edition V1.1 US English" and  are  replaced  by
the UK English products with UK English defaults detailed in this
document.
For  ease  of reference the previously announced English products
with US installation defaults will be referred to as  US  English
henceforth throughout this document. This distinguishes them from
the  products announced in this document as UK English which have
UK installation defaults.  Furthermore these UK English  products
DO  incorporate  the  Device  Drivers.  A  separate Device Driver
Supplement is therefore NOT required for use with the UK  English

products.

DESCRIPTION
IBM OS/2 Standard Edition Version 1.1 is designed  to  provide  a
state-of-the-art  graphical  windowed interface for the end user,
introduce a new  level  of  programming  interface  for  advanced
graphics  and  user  interface functions, and provide significant
new function for end users and for application developers.
The  Presentation  Manager  user  interface  provides  concurrent
access  to  applications  and  system utilities by selecting from
hierarchical menus and icons with a mouse or  a  keyboard  in  an
easy-to-use  windowing environment. The user can control the size
and position of windows on the screen to optimise  screen  space.
An  application  can  have  its  windows  converted to an icon to
further conserve screen space.  Whenever the user wants to access
the application again, the icon is selected and  the  application
windows  will reappear.  The graphical user interface is designed
to provide an intuitive, consistent way for the user to  do  such
things  as  specify  the  actions  to be performed, terminate the
current task, get Help information which is relevant to the  task
at  hand,  and  scroll  through  data which is outside the window
bounds. Many system user interface functions are  also  available
to  application developers, which enables a common user interface
for  applications  developed  using  the   Presentation   Manager
programming interface.
The  user  interface  of  OS/2  Version  1.1  complies, with some
exceptions, to the Common  User  Access  of  Systems  Application
Architecture.  These  exceptions  are documented in detail in the
OS/2 Programming Guide  (included  in  the  IBM  OS/2  Programmer
Toolkit,  Version  1.1).  It  is  IBM's  intention  to evolve the
product toward full compliance with  CUA  over  time.  Therefore,
users  of  OS/2  will  not  only  be  able  to interact with OS/2
facilities and with applications in a consistent manner, but will
gain benefits through transfer of learning, since CUA is designed
for ease of learning and use across  the  range  of  IBM  Systems
Application Architecture applications and environments.
A  powerful  new  interface is also provided to access and manage
the  files  on  disk  or  diskette.  Rather  than  using  complex
commands,  the  File  System allows the user to see the structure
and contents of the directories in a graphical tree format. Icons
are used to identify the contents of  the  directories,  such  as
files,  directories, and executable program. This format makes it
easier to understand and use the file system. In  addition,  many
everyday  tasks,  such  as  selecting files and moving or copying
files  from  one  device  or  directory  to   another,   can   be
accomplished  quickly  and  easily  with  simple movements of the
mouse or a  few  keystrokes.  Files  can  be  associated  with  a
specified  program, so that the program is executed automatically
whenever the file is selected. And, of course, the  OS/2  command
structure is still available for those who prefer it.
