----------------------------------------

With the AS/400(R) Advanced 36(TM) Model 9402-436, you can run System/36(TM) and AS/400 applications concurrently. This new system, based on Power PC AS technology, enables you to choose from thousands of AS/400 applications to either replace your existing SSP-based applications or to run with them. This allows you to move to AS/400 applications at your own pace.

To enable your System/36 applications to run on the AS/400 Advanced 36, AS/400 Advanced 36 Release 7.5 licensed programs are available to replace System/36 programs such as SSP, utilities, and languages.

You do not need to recompile or change your System/36 applications. System/36 applications that use non-privileged documented interfaces are object code-compatible on AS/400 Advanced 36. You will find that applications, high-level languages, licensed programs, PC support, backup and recovery, and office applications operate as they do on a System/36.

Since recompilation is not necessary, you can easily migrate to the AS/400 Advanced 36, even if you do not have access to all of your System/36 application source code. Migration is accomplished by simply saving System/36 applications and data and restoring them on the AS/400 Advanced 36 by using tape, diskette, or the Transition Data Link (twinaxial connection).

The new SSP Release 7.5 and OS/400(R) Version 3 Release 6 operating systems will run on the AS/400 Advanced 36 either individually or concurrently. Up to three copies of the SSP Release 7.5 can be supported concurrently with the OS/400 operating system.

The ability to run both operating systems concurrently and access the functions of the OS/400 operating system means you have support for increased memory, disk, workstations, and printers.

DESCRIPTION

The AS/400 Advanced 36 Model 436 provides the easiest migration from a System/36 to a replacement platform. You get full object code compatibility for System/36 programs and a complete System/36 environment. The compatibility is maintained even when you decide to run SSP and OS/400 concurrently.

OS/400 Version 3 Release 6 can be installed on an AS/400 Advanced 36 Model 436 running SSP Release 7.5. The ability to run both operating systems concurrently means you now have access to the functions of the OS/400 operating system, including support for increased memory, disk, workstations, and printers.

Release 7.5 has incorporated the 5727-LAN product into the SSP product. Many functions previously available as PRPQs are now integrated into the release (refer to the list under the PRPQ section). Remote diagnostics allows remote service to be done on your machine via the Remote DST function. The DST function also supports RAID and mirroring of data. The SSP can now support both 5 1/4-inch and 8-inch diskettes on the same system with the procedure CHGSYSVL DEVMAP, which also allows you to use the tape devices and communications lines that can be attached to the 9402 Model 436. The number of workstations supported has increased from 80 to 160. If OS/400 is added, 280 workstations can be supported. Another addition with the OS/400 is PTF support for SSP via Electronic Customer Support (ECS). These are just a few of the additional capabilities available to you on a Model 436 while you continue to run your business on the familiar SSP-based system.

Each AS/400 Advanced 36 Model 436 with OS/400 Version 3 Release 6 installed may have up to three copies of the SSP Release 7.5 operating system running concurrently. The second and third versions of the operating systems do not require additional SSP licenses. Each operating system may have a different national language version. Data can be exchanged with OS/400 or with other SSP invocations on the same machine using Distributed Data Management (DDM).

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The AS/400 Advanced 36 offers the easiest migration of any platform to a System/36 replacement system. Unlike many other System/36 replacement systems, all licensed programs, such as Assembler and Workstation Utility (WSU), are available. Investments in System/36 applications, I/O, education, and skills are preserved. To further ease the transition, IBM has included popular PRPQs in the base SSP operating system.

Alternatives such as OS/400 with IBM System/36 Environment should be considered when migration at a source level can be accomplished or when you want to use only applications supported in the native or System/36 environment.

Porting applications to OS/400 native should be considered if you want to take advantage of AS/400 system functions such as database or PC connectivity directly from the application.

PC LAN-based offerings should be considered if you have a large PC investment that does not require more than one small LAN (which can be administered manually), does not have remote PCs, and does not require full System/36 licensed program functions compatibility or OS/400 capabilities. No PC LAN-based solution provides all IBM System/36 licensed program functions or compatibility.

RISC System/6000(R) should be considered if you have made a commitment to a UNIX(1)-based operating system solution, where conversion, staffing, and education requirements are not a problem. Generally, only some System/36 applications may be reused since not all System/36 licensed program functions are available.

Software Requirements: The SSP (5716-SSP) Release 7.5 runs on an AS/400 Advanced 36 9402 Model 436. All other licensed programs in this announcement require the SSP (5716-SSP) to run.

All AS/400 Advanced 36 system programs must be at the same release and modification level.

The Advanced 36 Model 436 supports the OS/400 (5716-SS1) Version 3 Release 6 operating system.

Compatibility

Compatibility of Release 7.5 and 7.1 of the SSP:

The SSP (5716-SSP) can coexist and exchange data with other systems in a network. The other systems do not need to be running AS/400 Advanced 36 SSP (5716-SSP).

The SSP provides upward object code compatibility for application objects created on any release of a System/36. Application objects created and saved on a System/36 may be restored and used on AS/400 Advanced 36.

The SSP provides downward object code compatibility for application objects created on AS/400 Advanced 36. Application objects created and saved on AS/400 Advanced 36 may be restored and used on a System/36.

The SSP supports a subset of the national languages that are supported by OS/400. The code page for Belgian-French and Portuguese differ between the Advanced 36 and OS/400. The Advanced 36 supports both code pages so that an easy conversion can be made from a System/36 to an Advanced 36 in SSP only mode. When running both SSP and OS/400, the programs and data on the System/36 or on the Advanced 36 in SSP only mode must be converted to the OS/400 code page. The Multinational Character Set Conversion Utility is included in the SSP to assist in this conversion.

Procedure Commands Not Supported: The following System/36 hardware-specific procedure commands supported by the System/36 SSP are no longer required or supported on AS/400 Advanced 36:

National Language Versions Not Supported: The Icelandic, LAD Spanish, and Kanji preferred national language versions are no longer supported.

PRPQs: The following System/36 PRPQs are integrated into Advanced 36 Release 7.5:

Limitations: Release 7.5 will run only on the AS/400 Advanced 36 Model 436. Release 7.1 products will not run on the AS/400 Advanced 36 Model 436.

Current System/36 Release 5.1 (5727-SS1) and 5.1 or 6.0 (5727-SS6) program limitations continue to exist such as:

* For RPG programs that use external calls or COBOL programs that
use dynamic calls, the maximum program size is 60KB.

Performance Considerations: AS/400 Advanced 36 Model 436 operates as a larger capacity, faster System/36. The interactive response time of the AS/400 Advanced 36 is two to six times faster than the IBM System/36. Actual performance improvement realized depends on your workload and the processor of the Advanced 36. And batch performance improves from four (on an entry 2102 processor) to 30 times (on a maximum-configured 2106 processor) compared to the System/36.

User Group Requirements: This announcement satisfies or partially satisfies requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities, which include Australasian COMMON, COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, G.U.I.D.E. Europe, Japan GUIDE/SHARE (JGS), Guide Latin American (LAG), SHARE EUROPE, and SHARE Incorporated.

Planning Information

Order Planning: AS/400 Advanced 36 hardware and software technical reference, SSP and OS/400 coexistence, publications, and planning and ordering information is available in the AS/400 Advanced 36 Planning and Reference Handbook (SA21-9656). This publication is available in hardcopy, CD-ROM, and on the Internet. Contact your IBM representative to order the publication.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced licensed programs use the security and auditability features of AS/400 Advanced 36 SSP.

User and resource security are provided as part of the base SSP. Usage is optional. Customers can limit user access with passwords plus menu and badge reader restrictions. They can also limit read/write access for files and libraries. In addition, an optional keylock on the service panel can be used to restrict its use.

Files and program libraries can be restricted to authorized users. These users can be further restricted by type of use. An SSP option allows the creation of audit entries in the system history file for each user of a secured file or library. To achieve increased security, the SSP controls should be combined with physical security and a division of duties.

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

ORDERING INFORMATION

OS/400 Ordering

Refer to Software Announcement 295-252, dated June 21, 1995, for ordering information.

New Licensees Ordering

Orders for new licenses are accepted now.

Shipment will begin on March 8, 1996. Orders entered after March 8, 1996, will be scheduled for the week following order entry. Orders for new licenses are placed by the local IBM office.

General Ordering Information

Software Price Structure: Release 7.5 runs only on the 9402 Model 436. The price of the Model 436 includes the BasePac license (5716-PK1). The no-charge BasePac (5716-PK1) is available only when the new order or upgrade to a Model 436 is ordered from IBM. If a Model 436 is sold by the original customer to a third party, the new customer must get an SSP license (5716-SSP) and any other desired licenses. BasePac (5716-PK1) is not available to that customer. OS/400 also runs on the Model 436 and should be ordered on the same SPO (5755-AS4) as the SSP software is.

Basic License: A 5716 order for a basic license consists of an order for the 5716 product type and an order for an SPO product type 5755-AS4. The 5716 orders are required for billing and asset registration. New basic license users should specify asset registration feature number 9001. If OS/400 is ordered it will be included on the same SPO 5755-AS4.

Additional Licenses: When additional software products are ordered for an on-order or installed system, the program type 5716 product must be ordered and the SPO (5755-AS4) record updated to reflect the addition.

Distribution Medium: Products are shipped on CD-ROM media or preloaded on a TSP AS/400 system.

Secondary Languages: Secondary languages and the English double-byte character set (DBCS) are not preloaded.

A separate order for the secondary language must be placed as an MES to the SPO (5755-AS4). The language CD-ROM will be shipped from the distribution libraries. Secondary language orders are supported only if OS/400 is also ordered. Then, additional copies of the ordered SSP and LPs will be shipped in the specified national language version.

Select the appropriate feature for either a new order or upgrade order of the appropriate 5716-XXX or 5799-XXX order.

PUBLICATIONS

Softcopy Publications: Softcopy publications are shipped on a machine-readable CD-ROM. With the initial product order, a CD-ROM will be shipped with SSP. Additional copies of the CD-ROM are available for a fee. The CD-ROM contains the entire OS/400 (and associated licensed programs) publication library, including books for products that may not have been ordered.

However, the CD-ROM does not contain the entire SSP (and associated licensed programs) publication library. It contains only the following Advanced 36 softcopy books:

To support authorized use, printed copies of the displayable or source material may be made if the copyright notice and any other legend of ownership is reproduced on each copy or partial copy.

The softcopy manuals can be displayed, read, and searched using the OS/400 InfoSeeker program. However, the InfoSeeker program is not supported on SSP-only systems. The Advanced 36 softcopy books can be displayed, read, and searched using the InfoSeeker program only on systems running both SSP and OS/400. The manuals can also be read with the library readers (shipped on the softcopy CD-ROM) or the BookManager(R) READ family of licensed programs.

OTC: Customers who pay an OTC for a licensed program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no additional charge. Significant new function may be offered as an optional feature and charged for separately. Customers who order software release updates will be billed a processing charge. If a replacement program is announced and the customer elects to license the replacement program for an OTC and replace the prior program, an upgrade charge may apply.

Program Upgrade Charge: Program upgrade charges will apply for upgrades from AS/400 Advanced 36 Release 7.1 (5727) to AS/400 Advanced 36 Release 7.5 (5716).

The program upgrade charge applies to orders for the replacement program when it replaces a prior program that was obtained for an OTC and is discontinued upon installation of the new version. If the prior program is not discontinued, the full one-time charge applies to the replacement program.
