IBM Announcement Letter No. ZP90-0243 dated May 15, 1990.
IBM SAA PERSONAL APPLICATION SYSTEM/2 VERSION 2.0
IBM SAA Personal Application System/2 (Personal AS/2) Version 2.0 is the second version of the IBM decision support software product for the Operating System/2 (OS/2) environment. The functional content of IBM SAA Personal AS/2 V2.0 has been significantly extended since the original announcement to provide a more flexible end-user decision support product for the personal computing environment.
IBM SAA Personal AS/2 V2.0 is offered as a base product and four optional products, IBM SAA Personal AS Development/2 V2.0, IBM SAA Personal AS Statistics/2 V2.0, IBM SAA Personal AS Project Management/2 V2.0, IBM SAA Personal AS Business Planning/2 V2.0. The base product is a prerequisite for the optional products. The four optional products can also be ordered and installed on the OS/2 Office Feature Release 2.1 of the OfficeVision/2 LAN Series, OfficeVision/VM Series and OfficeVision/MVS Series.

Both OS/2 Office Feature Release 2.1 and IBM SAA Personal AS/2 V2.0 provide a decision support business tool which delivers a fully integrated solution to business problems. Significant enhancements from Personal AS Version 1 extend the flexibility and breadth of possible solutions. And the provision of two new business tools, Business Planning, and Project Management, make the OS/2 Office Feature Release 2.1 and IBM Personal AS/2 V2.0 function-rich, fully integrated, decision support solutions.
The following enhancements and new features extend the ability of IBM Personal AS/2 and OS/2 Office Feature Release 2.1 to provide business solutions:
Enhanced presentation methods, including three-dimensional display, give wider and more flexible choice to users when presenting information. The wider choice expands presentation alternatives and simplifies interpretation.
Totaling methods have been extended to allow standard deviation, percentage, cumulative, and multiple total types to be shown. In addition greater layout control allows inclusion of header and footer text. Cross-column sub-totaling gives a further dimension of information. These enhancements give greater design flexibility and enable the production of more informative business reports.
The information needed to solve a business problem is often spread across several different data tables. And business users are often not aware how much information is available to them or how it is organised. This problem is solved by helping users find the information they need with the Schema and Graphical Query tools.
Schema gives a graphical representation of selected tables and automatically draws links between related columns. Users can examine the links, accept or reject them, and create new links to identify the information they need. Once complete the Schema definition can be saved for future use.
Graphical Query can use a predefined Schema as a base and enables the user to combine information from different tables. Once created the Query can be saved for use with other business tools provided in the product.
Many business problems are unique to the corporation in which they occur - and a solution cannot be bought "off-the-shelf". The solution must be tailor-made which traditionally can be time consuming and costly.
This problem is solved by providing the Graphical Procedures tool which allows users to build applications interactively on their terminal. Graphical Procedures provides a blank desk-top and palette of icons (or objects). Icons represent the various tools that can be used for example, a chart, report, data table, Graphical Query, output terminal, or printer. Applications created with the Development optional product can be saved as an icon and used in a procedure. Once created, a procedure can be used in another procedure. In this way, a set of low level graphical procedures can be defined and combined when needed to give the end user a powerful procedure capability.
By using graphical procedure end-users can define solutions interactively without needing to know a procedure language. And each solution can be automatically checked for logical consistency and saved for future use where it can be copied and modified to build further solutions.
The following new analyses are now available:
The Development optional product provides a powerful programming language known as Application System Language (ASL). ASL has been extensively enhanced and modified from Version 1.0 to provide a more powerful and flexible tool that supports OS/2 1.2 and Presentation Manager.
The tool set provided allows interactive syntax-free definition of the end user interface and generation of base ASL program code. The generated code can be modified and enhanced using the program editor.
The Development optional product has been designed for use by application developers to enable rapid creation of business solutions that fit seamlessly into both IBM SAA Personal AS/2 and OS/2 Office Feature Release 2.1 environments.
Business planning can be used to monitor finances, anticipate future business and volumes, estimate costs, and project profit. The Business Planning optional product uses a simple definition language to build a powerful multi-dimensional computer model of a company's business structure which can interpret and analyze detailed corporate information and provide a sound basis for future financial decisions.
The product is designed to combine independent hierarchical dimensions into a multi-dimensional model. Intrinsic functions, such as compound growth and depreciation, make definition of standard algorithms unnecessary. Results can be consolidated automatically, saved for future use, analyzed using the Statistics optional product, and presented using Business Charts and Business Reports.
The Business Planning optional product provides a powerful solution for business professionals and financial planners who want to analyze and prepare plans at any level within a company.
The Project Management optional product is a tool for planning and controlling a project to assist managers to meet business objectives on time.
The tasks needed to complete a project are identified and stored in a project specification. The resources, for example people and machinery, needed to complete the project can be defined for each task - this ensures realistic scheduling based on available resources. And because different people (or machines) have different work patterns Project Management allows multiple work calendars to be used in the same project definition. The project specification can be displayed as a network logic diagram to allow easy checking of the often complex relations between tasks. And results of an analysis can be shown on a Gantt chart (bar-chart against time). Results can also be saved and used with Business Charts and Business Reports to give maximum flexibility of presentation. The project definition is designed to be quickly and easily updated to provide timely and accurate information for decision makers.
The Project Management optional product is fully integrated with the other IBM Personal AS/2 and OS/2 Office Feature Release 2.1 optional products and will satisfy the needs of business professionals and project managers who need a computerized critical path analysis tool.
Users can exchange data tables with host AS. They can use host AS to gain access to SQL/DS, DB2, and, by using the Customized Data Interface of host AS, other sources of data not explicitly supported - including non-IBM data bases. Users can also exchange data with OS/400 DataBase Manager, data held in the OS/2 file system, and other PC products that use PC/IXF, DBF, or DIF file formats.
The Development optional product enables rapid prototyping of applications including automatic code generation.
Tools provided by the Development optional product allow rapid creation of CUA conforming applications.
Extensive on-screen help is presented using the OS/2 help manager.
The consistent data structure means that the same table can be used by any IBM Personal AS/2 business tool. And because data is not saved as a snapshot, each saved specification, for example, graphical query, report or chart always shows the latest information.
IBM Personal AS/2 V2.0 uses the Common User Access (CUA) model, to interact with users. Users already familiar with CUA will benefit from their previous experience and become productive more quickly. Users who are new to CUA will find an interface designed to be intuitive and easy to use.
Applications created with the Development optional product can be transferred to any other IBM Personal AS/2 V2.0 user either on diskette or by LAN. Users do not need the Development optional product to run an application.
Users can develop new applications using the application development language (ASL), or a combination of ASL and C programming language. Both Graphical Procedures and the Development optional product give users the ability to create new business tools and applications. Once created the new tools can be transferred to other users either by diskette or by LAN. In this way, the range of applications which are available to a company can grow in a way that matches the needs of the user.
