IBM DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 includes the following functions. For important extended descriptions of many of these functions, refer to the Supplemental Information section.
Improvements have been made to further reduce the occasions where a dataset allocation or extension fails if there is not enough space available on a volume to meet the requested space using current algorithms. Specific action is required by the storage administrator to enable these new capabilities for selected data sets. Without this enablement, operations in this area remain unchanged. Refer to the Supplemental Information section.
The DFM DataAgent extends the function of the Distributed FileManager (DFM) component of DFSMSdfp (TM) by providing the ability to invoke routines that run as extensions of DFM/MVS from remote SmartData Utilities (SdU) clients.
DFSMShsm will provide an alternative to TAPECOPY processing. This option will allow backup and migration to create two tapes concurrently, eliminating the additional tape mount used by TAPECOPY.
DFSMShsm support for multi-host environments is being enhanced by providing the opportunity to reduce contention for its control data sets. Customers can now take advantage of VSAM RLS for access to these control data sets. Use should be considered where three or more hosts are processing in a shared environment, especially with parallel sysplex operation.
DFSMShsm now provides the capability to stack the output files for an ABARS aggregate to a single tape stream, as well as these highly-useful additions:
The customer can now use the IDCAMS ALTER command to change the storage class and management class constructs of a migrated data set without recall.
Four new FSR (Function Statistics Record) types have been created to provide better storage space accountability, and a new Delete Backup function has been added to the DFSMShsm REPORT output.
DFSMS support for compression of sequential data sets is being significantly enhanced with compression algorithms tailored for each data set. In prior releases, the support used a generic building block algorithm, resulting in less than optimal compression. Tailored dictionaries provide improved compression ratios. Data sets created with compress (tailored) dictionaries are not accessible on pre-DFSMS/MVS 1.4.0 systems. For further information, refer to Supplemental Information section.
When using system-managed buffering, optimization for sequential or direct processing and input or output processing of batch programs can be realized without changes to JCL or AMS DEFINE commands. Performance for many batch programs equivalent to that currently obtained for BATCH LSR may be obtained. Refer to the Supplemental Information section for additional details.
Loading of VSAM KSDSs has been enhanced to exploit system-managed buffering.
Catalog Search Interface (CSI) is an MVS read-only, general-use programming interface that can be used to obtain information about entries contained in ICF Catalogs. The ICF catalog entries can be selected using a generic filter key provided as input. The generic filter key can be a fully-qualified entry name, in which case one entry is returned, or the generic filter key can contain wild cards so that multiple entries can be selected on a single invocation. The type or types of entries desired can also be specified. For instance, all non-VSAM entries that begin with ABC could be selected. Refer to the Supplemental Information section for additional details.
Storage management has been streamlined in catalog address space, resulting in considerable improvements in pathlengths. On internal measurements, the time to open a large number of DB2 tables has been reduced by up to 22 percent. This results in shorter DB2 restart or start-up times when large numbers of data sets are involved.
The Object Access Method (OAM) component of DFSMS/MVS now writes new SMF records, with subtypes for each OAM activity.
Physical device type of a volume will be surfaced. Original volser of a migrated or backed up data set will be surfaced. Several new fields in the data class will be surfaced. Device type and use attribute (public, private, storage) of volumes and capability to exclude volumes from data extraction will also be included.
In this release, for both non-VSAM and VSAM data sets, the last reference date in the Format-1 DSCB will be updated at close if it was different from that at open. This is to ensure that data sets do not automatically get migrated based on the last reference date at open in the DFSMShsm space management cycle, after a subsystem is brought down or the data set is closed after many days.
This function supports BWO, LOG, LOGSTREAMID, and SPANNED/NONSPANNED attributes in SMS data class, allowing data sets defined via JCL to use these attributes if assigned a data class having these attributes.
RLS access for extended addressability data sets is now available in this release; access to them will continue to be not allowed on DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 3. Extended Format VSAM KSDSs (key-sequenced data sets) larger than 4 gigabytes can now be processed with RLS, by key. Maximum data set size may be limited by entry size limitation, which accommodates only 59 volumes. The limit of 123 extents per component per volume will continue to exist. For further discussion, refer to the Supplemental Information.
Support has been added to prevent the inadvertent processing of SMS physical sequential data sets that were checkpointed either by MVS Checkpoint/Restart or by IMS (TM). DFSMSdss is now able to differentiate between these two types of checkpointed data sets.
Batch capabilities being provided in DFSMS/MVS 1.4.0 ease the process of doing many routine storage management tasks using ISMF. An online interface and code skeletons are supplied to facilitate navigation through the functions available, and to assist with batch task automation.
With DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4, DFSMSrmm no longer ships DFSMShsm ARCTVEXT user exit, because DFSMShsm has been enhanced to call DFSMSrmm via an EDGTVEXT interface. This allows DFSMShsm customers to run with two tape management systems, side-by-side, on the same system. Customers that currently run a third-party tape management system can now run DFSMSrmm on a trial basis for evaluation purposes without impacting the other tape management system.
In April 1997, IBM shipped Small Programming Enhancement UW90397 (APAR OW25469) to the DFSMS/MVS Optimizer that provides in-depth analysis of batch job streams and also recommends the most effective use of SnapShot for MVS/ESA. This function is included in DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4.
Note: Extended information regarding many of the above topics, as well as the following topics is in the Supplemental Information section.
Recent Enhancements (PTFs) to DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 3 Included in This Release:
DFSMS/MVS with OS/390
IBM DFSMS/MVS is an integral part of IBM OS/390. DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 will be integrated into OS/390 Version 2 Release 4. Customers with OS/390 Version 1 Release 1, Release 2, or Release 3 are able to order DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 at no additional charge and receive the benefits of this release on September 26, 1997.
Year 2000
This product is year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange date data with it.
Note: On October 31, 1995, IBM announced year 2000 support which stated that, for any S/390 (R) platform running MVS or OS/390 to be considered as year 2000 ready, all data sets must use Integrated Catalog Facility (ICF). It will not be possible to access data via a VSAM Catalog or CVOL when the system date changes past December 31, 1999. This means that MVS customers who still have data sets cataloged in OS/VS Control Volumes (CVOLs) or in the old VSAM catalogs will need to migrate these to ICF catalogs before the end of 1999. We look forward to all of our MVS customers taking advantage of the better performance and integrity of ICF. Those VSE VSAM customers who previously shared VSAM data sets between the MVS platform and VSE or VM platforms will need to re-evaluate methods for satisfying their data sharing requirements. For further information, refer to Software Announcement 295-464, dated October 31, 1995.
STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION
A future release of DFSMS/MVS Optimizer will be able to terminate selected tasks within the DFSMShsm primary address space.
IBM intends to make the following items available via Small Programming Enhancements (SPEs) to DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4, after the general availability of DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4.
New function will be added to the Program Management component. This function is in support of the OS/390 Dynamic Link Libraries. It will improve C/C++ compilation procedures (elimination of the C pre-linker), C++ OO support, and additional OpenEdition (R) support.
The XRC Remote Copy functions will be enhanced for DFSMSdfp 1.4.0 to work in conjunction with planned enhancements to the LIC for the 3990-6 and 9390 storage controls to eliminate the requirement to perform a full volume synchronization copy operation for all volumes in an XRC session in the event of a planned outage.
This support will provide functions which will allow customers to manage the re-synchronization process by enhancements to existing TSO commands and the addition of new TSO command functions. The enhancements will facilitate the installation of maintenance on the data mover system, switching the data mover from one system to another, and the management of planned outages when running XRC in a disaster recovery copy mode.
The support will be provided via a PTF on the DFSMSdfp 1.4.0 and will also be available on DFSMSdfp 1.3 at the same time for those customers who cannot immediately move to 1.4.
The appropriate curriculum will be updated, as necessary, to include the enhancements in this announcement.
Descriptions of all classroom and self-study courses are contained in the IBM Education and Training catalogs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The following are extensions of the Description section.
Past approaches have reduced the impact of this problem by having the Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) try all candidate volumes before failing an allocation. Further improvements are made by this release for SMS-managed data sets by taking advantage of one or more of the following:
With these enhancements, the reason for having separate storage groups for large, medium, and small data sets may become less of a requirement.
With fewer failures, one does not need to run DEFRAG as often.
This solution does not apply to data set extensions on the same volume.
DFSMShsm will provide an alternative to TAPECOPY processing. This option will allow backup and migration to create two tapes concurrently, eliminating the additional tape mount used by TAPECOPY.
The pair of tapes created will maintain the "original versus alternate" distinction. The original tape will have one of the following tape data set names:
prefix.HMIGTAPE.DATASET
prefix.BACKTAPE.DATASET
The alternate tape will have one of the following tape data set names:
prefix.COPY.HMIGTAPE.DATASET
prefix.COPY.BACKTAPE.DATASET
This allows the new tapes to be compatible with the old tapes created by TAPECOPY. The ACS routines can direct the alternate tape to a different tape library, such as one at an offsite location. The restoration is completed via invocation of TAPEREPL.
The original restriction (that the alternate tape must have the same tape geometry as the original) is unchanged. For example, both must be 3490 ECCST tapes.
The DFM DataAgent extends the function of the Distributed FileManager (DFM) component of DFSMSdfp (TM) by providing the ability to invoke routines that run as extensions of DFM/MVS (R) from remote SmartData Utilities (SdU) clients. By providing for the ability to add routines that can be invoked by DFM clients, this new capability expands the way client applications can access data on MVS beyond predefined remote transactions.
An extension routine could be executed via the DFM DataAgent, to access data extracted from an MVS file and copy the data into an intermediate file for subsequent retrieval by the SdU client through normal VSAM/x interfaces.
A sample DataAgent is provided that illustrates how selected TSO commands can be run.
DFSMShsm suffers dataset contention against its control datasets when three or more hosts are processing in a shared environment. With this release, DFSMShsm can use VSAM RLS to access its control datasets which will eliminate this contention.
DFSMS support for compression of sequential data sets is being significantly enhanced with compression algorithms tailored for each data set. In prior releases, the support used a generic building block algorithm to construct the dictionary and did not contain extracted strings from the data set to be compressed, resulting in less than optimal compression. Tailored dictionaries provide improved compression ratios.
Since tailored compression algorithms construct the dictionary from the data to be compressed, all languages and formats should compress equally well. This eliminates the need for language-specific dictionary building blocks.
Tailored dictionary compression can be activated by specifying a new keyword in the SMS member (IGDSMSxx) of SYS1.PARMLIB. Current compression techniques will also be supported, and are the default when tailored compression is not specified.
Data sets created with compress (tailored) active are not accessible on pre-DFSMS/MVS 1.4.0 systems.
System buffering is chosen for VSAM batch NSR processing by assigning a new data class parameter of "RECORD ACCESS BIAS|MSR = SYSTEM" ("USER" is the default) to the extended format data set. The buffering algorithms and the number of buffers used are chosen by the system based on the data set's storage class sequential and direct Bias specification and the MACRF specifications (DIR, SEQ, SKP) at open. In general, the system buffering should be optimal. To handle special situations, one can override these, if required, using the JCL AMP parameter.
Field information for each entry is requested by specifying field names thus relieving the caller from knowing whether the information is in the Basic Catalog Structure (BCS) or in the VSAM Volume Data Set (VVDS).
With availability of this interface, it is no longer necessary to use SVC 26, CAMLST LOCATE, or IDCAMS LISTCAT interfaces to extract information from catalogs (BCS or VVDS).
Examples of uses for the Catalog Search Interface:
DFSMShsm provides the capability to stack the output files for an ABARS aggregate to a single tape stream (one or more tapes, as needed). In the past, separate files were written on separate tapes, so an aggregate frequently consumed three or more cartridges. Customers tried to mitigate this by suppressing certain files, or redirecting them to direct access storage. Having fewer tapes minimizes human error associated with manual movement, ejection from tape libraries, packaging for transport, and stocking tapes at the receiving vault or offsite data center. Additionally, this reduces the number of tapes required for ABACKUP output. In most cases, this will reduce the minimum number of tapes from three to one.
To ensure maximum parallelism during disaster recovery, different aggregates will be stacked onto separate tapes. A tape will not contain more than the files associated with a single ABARS aggregate.
ABARS reporting will now include a 32-character accounting information code and the CPU time consumed. This information will be included in both the ABACKUP and ARECOVER WWFSR (Function Statistics Record) records written to SMF, and will also be part of the ABR record kept in the DFSMShsm BCDS Control Data Set.
The ISMF panel for aggregate definition will permit entry of the new 32-character accounting field and will display this accounting field in its own column on all displays that show other aggregate definition information. Additionally, this function can:
The customer can now use the IDCAMS ALTER command to change the storage class and management class constructs of a migrated data set without recall. Although this function was provided informally via the HALTER EXEC, shipped in DFSMS/MVS 1.2.0, the exec was restricted to HSM-authorized users. With this new support, all DFSMShsm users can alter their own data using the standard IDCAMS ALTER command or ISMF ALTER command on the data set application. Users must have RACF (TM) ALTER authority to alter management class or storage class.
There are times when an installation may wish to change how a particular data set is managed by assigning a new management class to the data set. In prior releases of DFSMS/MVS, if the data set in question was migrated, the data set had to be recalled to alter the management class name. If this data set were migrated to ML2 tape, this would result in the end user having to wait for a tape mount before the alter request could be fulfilled. With this change, no recall of the data set is necessary, thus eliminating the tape mount or unnecessary processing altogether.
The Object Access Method (OAM) component of DFSMS/MVS now writes new SMF records. The SMF (type 85) record assigned to OAM supports subtypes, and there is a subtype for virtually every activity performed by OAM, including the following:
In DFSMS 1.3, for non-VSAM data sets, the last reference date in the Format-1 DSCB was updated at close if it was different from that at open.
In this release, this will also be done for VSAM data sets. This is to ensure that data sets do not automatically get migrated based on the last reference date at open in the DFSMShsm space management cycle after a subsystem is brought down after many days.
This function supports BWO, LOG, LOGSTREAMID, and SPANNED/NONSPANNED attributes in SMS data class, allowing data sets defined via JCL to use these attributes if assigned a data class having these attributes.
These attributes are also applied to VSAM data sets allocated using AMS DEFINE. AMS merges (does not override) these attributes from data class if not specified on DEFINE.
BWO, LOG, and LOGSTREAMID only apply to SMS-managed data sets and are ignored for non-SMS data sets whereas SPANNED/NONSPANNED apply to both SMS and non-SMS data sets.
In order to reduce the number of data classes with unique LOGSTREAMID, log streams can be identified in JCL for JCL-allocated data sets and in IDCAMS DEFINE. Use data class to identify log streams only when many data sets use the same log stream.
Extended Format VSAM KSDSs (key-sequenced data sets) larger than 4 gigabytes can now be processed with RLS. VSAM RLS applications that use keyed access and not RBA access do not need to change or recompile.
Applications that use RBA access can access the data beyond 4 gigabytes by, for example, invoking the VSAM-control-block-manipulation macros to obtain the 8-byte RBA values from the new control-block fields. The 8-byte RBA fields and options may also be used on smaller, non-extended addressability data sets. RLS access for extended addressability data sets is only available on DFSMS 1.4 and not on lower releases. The maximum data set size for extended addressing depends on the control interval size and equals control interval size in bytes times 4,000 million. It may be further limited by the Task Input/Output Table (TIOT) entry limit of 59 volumes and 255 extents per component.
Support has been added to prevent inadvertent processing of SMS physical sequential checkpointed data sets. DFSMSdss operations that could render these data sets unusable for restart are performed only when such movement is specifically requested. DFSMSdss is able to differentiate between sequential data sets accessed during MVS checkpoint/restart and IMS (TM) GSAM checkpointed data sets.
Batch capabilities being provided in DFSMS/MVS 1.4.0 ease the process of doing many routine storage management tasks. Capabilities included are:
These capabilities in DFSMS/MVS 1.4.0 can be found under option 11, Enhanced ACS Management, on the ISMF primary option menu.
This enhancement to secondary volume selection for system-managed storage, which shipped with APAR OW23333 for DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 2 and Version 1 Release 3, is made available as part of Release 4.
SMS volume selection has been significantly enhanced in support of databases. The new algorithms change the way volumes are selected from the secondary volume list. Current algorithms always pick the volume from the top of the list which is the volume known to have the most free space.
The new algorithms reduce skews under the following conditions:
These enhancements shipped via APAR OW25492 on DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Releases 1, 2, and 3 and are now made available as part of DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4:
DFSMSrmm can now use DFSMSdss concurrent copy for the Control Data Set backup which will allow requests that require access to the CDS to be processed in parallel regardless of whether any updates to the CDS are required. Use of DFSMSdss also supports output direct to tape.
Additional enhancements provide information on journal percentage full and notification when the installation-defined threshold is reached. You can use DFSMSrmm to start a procedure to backup the CDS and reset the journal based on the defined threshold.
DFSMSrmm now supports suppression of secondary file tracking. This support may be selected when the first file is created on the volume and remains in effect so long as the first file is retained. This function must be activated via DFSMSrmm exit, when the first file on the volume is created. If data set recording is turned off when the first file is created, subsequent files added to the volume are not tracked by DFSMSrmm.
DFSMSrmm now provides trial-run capability (VERIFY) which allows policy (VRS) changes to be tested before being used in production. DFSMSrmm now provides an activity file which identifies each data set which would (trial-run) or did (production-run) change status during inventory management (VRSEL). By specifying a future date on a trial-run (VERIFY), DFSMSrmm users can obtain a forecast of activity for that future date.
DFSMS 1.4.0 incorporates significant DCME enhancements that were first made available via PTFs on DFSMS 1.3.0 in December 1996. In addition to some miscellaneous changes, DCME provides three new functions, two of which are designed to enhance the ability to correlate data set level performance statistics with volume level performance statistics.
The first new function pertains to multivolume and striped data sets. Now the statistics are segregated by volume component or stripe. Furthermore, volume level I/O statistics are provided for the VTOC and VTOC index components as well as the VVDS. The sum of the volume and data set statistics in the type 42 records should correlate well with the RMF (TM) device level statistics.
Finally, DFSMS 1.4.0 provides a new data set performance metric called "I/O delay" which provides for improved batch job analysis. At the data set level, users can now measure the actual achieved sustained data rate for sequential data sets. Using this data, along with measurements of the quantity of data processed, a job's elapsed time may effectively be parsed to determine how much time a job waits on sequential I/O. Such information can be used to more effectively tune batch workloads.
DFSMS/MVS (DFSMS) Extended Format Data Set (EFDS) support for IBM RAMAC Virtual Array (RVA) applies to RAMAC systems shipped with microcode level R03.02.22 when the PTFs for APAR OW23486 for DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 3 are applied. A mandatory field bill, 9393 ECA002, supporting EFDS, has shipped to all existing 9393 Model 1 and 2 customers. StorageTek 9200 Iceberg customers should contact their service representatives. DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 includes support of the above functions, as described below, including:
Specified Operating Environment

Subsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed.
The terms for IBM DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 3, as announced in Software Announcement 295-514, dated December 19, 1995, including Program Services, licensed under the IBM Customer Agreement, are unaffected by this announcement with the following exception.
DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 is offered at no additional charge only for customers licensed to use either DFSMS/MVS Version 1 (5695-DF1) or OS/390 Version 1 (5645-001) which contains DFSMS/MVS Version 1 function.
To be eligible to obtain the right to use DFSMSdss, DFSMShsm, or DFSMSrmm at no additional charge, you must be licensed to use either DFMSM/MVS Version 1 with these features or OS/390 Version 1 with the equivalent optional functions on a designated machine.
IBM authorizes you to make copies of the DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 media at no additional charge for use on all systems where you are licensed to use either DFSMS/MVS Version 1 or OS/390 Version 1 (5645-001) which includes DFSMS/MVS Version 1 function. Once DFSMS Version 1 Release 4 is no longer used on the same machine as OS/390 Version 1 with DFSMS Version 1 function, Feature 2126 must be replaced with the normal billable Feature Numbers, and normal pricing will apply.
Support Line: Current charges are unaffected by this announcement.
Usage Restriction Applies
Only those customers licensed on a designated machine to use either DFSMS/MVS Version 1 (5695-DF1) or OS/390 Version 1 (5645-001) which includes DFSMS/MVS Version 1 function are eligible to order DFSMS/MVS Version 1 Release 4 at no additional charge.
Note: To be eligible to obtain the right to use DFSMSdss, DFSMShsm, or DFSMSrmm at no additional charge, you must be licensed to use either DFSMS/MVS Version 1 with these features or OS/390 Version 1 with the equivalent optional functions on a designated machine.
