These releases, announced today and available this year, can lower the cost of computing, enhance the availability of applications, and facilitate the implementation of enterprise client/server computing in a heterogeneous setting.
Enhancements bring new levels of operational ease, performance, and reliability to Parallel Sysplex configurations. The MVS/ESA role of LAN server is improved by free-of-charge integration of server functions supporting NetWare**, OS/2(R) LAN Server, and Network File System clients. As part of IBM's continuing object-oriented strategy, new function is being introduced on MVS: the SOMobjects(TM) for MVS Run-time Library (also available as part of the SOMobjects for MVS program product -- see Software Announcement 294-637, dated October 4, 1994, for product information) and the SOMobjects for MVS application classes. An object-oriented execution capability, based on industry standards, enables a new class of applications and brings the strengths of object technology to development projects. With object-oriented technology, developers and users can work more effectively together to produce genuinely reusable code of higher quality. OpenEdition(TM) is enhanced to support the XPG4 base branding requirements of X/Open, enabling MVS/ESA to behave like a UNIX(1) system, run UNIX applications such as Tuxedo, and interoperate with other UNIX systems in your network using either TCP/IP or SNA protocols. This release is a major step toward IBM's intention to have MVS/ESA branded as a UNIX system.

DESCRIPTIONThe announcement of MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 on September 13, 1994, described several functional enhancements to the Parallel Sysplex. These enhancements provided:
The announcement of MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 on September 13, 1994, also described several System Management enhancements. These enhancements provided:
HCD Enhancements: HCD 5.2 has been enhanced to support the user in
defining devices to MVS such that the UCB related control blocks
representing the device can reside in 31-bit storage above the 16
megabyte line. Furthermore, additional user requirements to improve
the usability of HCD are addressed by this release of HCD.
JES2 and JES3 Enhancements
The MVS/ESA SP-JES2 5.2 component eliminates the need for an all member warm start to recover lost spool space or repair the job queue. It also supports the addition and modification of remote job entry devices by operator command. In addition, the JES2 component includes support for Automatic Restart Manager, Replication of Installation Definitions, and UCB Virtual Storage Constraint Relief.
The MVS/ESA SP-JES3 5.2.1 component improves systems management and automated operations by enabling the sysplex operations features of MVS/ESA. System and subsystem code can now build on these features without the need to limit function or provide alternative implementations in the JES3 environment. Sysplex-wide control is now available from consoles on any system rather than a subset of the console types on the global processor. JES3 command processors now preserve the Command and Response Token (CART) and appropriately identify responses, enabling improved automated operations. Optional use of the MVS Operations Log and System Logger provide a sysplex-wide log containing considerably more information than the current JES3 DLOG. JES3 managed operator and MLOG consoles are no longer required to manage the sysplex and therefore are no longer supported.
In addition, the JES3 component includes support for Automatic
Restart Manager, Replication of Installation Definitions, and UCB
Virtual Storage Constraint Relief.
Client/Server Enhancements in MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2
NetWare and OS/2 LAN Server environments provide transparent access to MVS/ESA storage resources with two new free-of-charge features of MVS/ESA SP 5.2. The LAN Resource Extension and Services/MVS (LANRES/MVS) feature provides disk serving, print serving, and central administration for NetWare LANs. The LAN Server for MVS feature provides an OS/2 compatible file system on MVS/ESA that works in conjunction with OS/2 LAN Server on the workstation. The integration of this server function at no additional charge lowers the cost of sharing resources in a client/server environment. The Software License Monitor licensed program, previously required to track usage, is no longer necessary when you move to MVS/ESA SP 5.2 and an unlimited number of LAN server clients may be connected without additional charge.
LANRES/MVS 1.3.1: The benefits of LANRES/MVS, an unpriced feature, that may be realized include the following:
LANRES/MVS Print Serving: LANRES/MVS provides a print serving capability for NetWare that lets NetWare end users route print jobs through NetWare to the host for printing. In addition, MVS users can route print jobs to NetWare for printing on NetWare attached printers.
LANRES/MVS Data Distribution: The data distribution component of LANRES/MVS allows authorized MVS users to manipulate files and directories controlled by NetWare. The volumes containing these files may be on the NetWare server or on a LANRES/MVS host disk. This function implements a central data distribution capability and allows customers the ability to create their own applications for moving data between the MVS system and the LAN.
LANRES/MVS LAN Administration: The LAN administration component of LANRES/MVS allows an authorized MVS systems administrator to add, delete, and rename users on the LAN. The administrator can also set passwords, password restrictions, limit space utilization, control file, directory access, and perform other administration functions. Many of the functions provided by the NetWare SYSCON and PCONSOLE utilities are supported.
Connectivity: LANRES/MVS supports both ESCON(R) and several parallel channel direct attachment configurations, as well as wide area network connections using either SNA or TCP/IP. LANRES/MVS supports sharing of the NetWare for SAA channel driver with other applications, providing for low cost, high performance connectivity. The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (5648-020) is an example of a program that benefits from this channel driver sharing capability: the requirement to provide a dedicated high performance connection each for LANRES and ADSM, from a given server to a given S/390 host has been removed; both LANRES and ADSM may share the same channel path. This provides a cost effective hardware arrangement, where for instance LANRES users benefit from the direct channel attachment during regular working hours, while ADSM may use the same bandwidth during off-shift hours to quickly and efficiently back up NetWare data.
Note: LANRES/MVS is also available as a charged stand-alone product for users of MVS 5.1 or earlier (program number 5695-123). Any further functional enhancements will be implemented on the free-of-charge feature of MVS/ESA, not the stand-alone product version.
The statement of general direction listed in the LAN Resource Extensions and Services/MVS Release 3.0 announcement, Software Announcement 294-533, dated September 13, 1994, to provide LANRES/MVS:
LAN Server for MVS 1.1.0: Some of the benefits of the LAN Server for MVS, an unpriced feature, that may be realized include the following:
LAN Server for MVS is comprised of a S/390 component and one client component, the OS/2 LAN Server client which runs on the OS/2 LAN Server 3.0 or 4.0 -- Advanced. The S/390 component provides storage for workstation format files. The workstation repository on S/390 supports hierarchical directories, long names, byte level locking, and extended attributes. These facilities can be used by DOS and OS/2 users connected to the OS/2 LAN Server. To the workstation end user the files stored on S/390 look like files stored on the OS/2 LAN Server. They can be accessed and used like any other workstation based file.
LAN Server for MVS provides the capability to share workstation data between multiple OS/2 LAN Servers. A channel attachment between the OS/2 LAN Server and the S/390 provides high speed data transfer for the OS/2 LAN Server user. The channel connection can use the IBM PS/2(R) MicroChannel to Mainframe Connection, an ESCON connection through an IBM 3172 Interconnect Controller Model 003 or an IBM System/370(TM) Emulator/A card. A connection may also be established across wide area networks using SNA. A set of administrative commands are provided to maintain the workstation data stored on S/390.
The ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (5648-020) provides special support for the LAN Server for MVS. The LAN Server is supported directly by a special ADSM client. Using this client, files managed by the LAN Server for MVS may be backed up directly into ADSM managed repositories. This support results in significant elapsed time savings for file backup tasks, where the LAN Server for MVS and the ADSM repository reside on the same host.
With the NFS file serving capabilities with LAN Server for MVS, TCP/IP NFS users can also store data in the S/390 workstation repository. OS/2 LAN Server users and NFS users can transparently share data stored on S/390. The full set of NFS Version 2 Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) is supported.
The previously available stand-alone LFS/ESA program product remains available for users of MVS/ESA 5.1 and prior versions. Any functional enhancements will be implemented only on the IBM LAN Server for MVS.
The statement of general direction listed in the LAN File Services/ESA Version 1 Release 1.2 announcement, Software Announcement 294-534, dated September 13, 1994, to provide LAN Server for MVS:
Users of the new client/server functions may realize the following benefits:
Improved Worker Productivity: The use of S/390 resources is completely transparent to the end user. Resources on S/390 are accessed by specifying a drive letter (for example, H:), the same way resources on the workstation would be used.
Increased Capacity: Large files or libraries that would have previously been replicated across numerous LAN servers can now be stored once on S/390. This reduces the DASD requirements for the LAN servers and ensures a more consistent view of data throughout the enterprise since the data is not maintained in multiple places. In addition, maintenance tasks on the LAN server that require temporary disk space, such as database maintenance, can now use DASD space on the S/390 instead of maintaining extra DASD on the LAN server.
Connectivity: With direct ESCON attach from the 3172-3 platform, LAN Server for MVS/ESA customers can take full advantage of the many benefits of ESCON. Fiber optic links can extend the distance between channels and control units up to 23 kilometers (14.3 miles). "Chained" ESCON Directors can increase this range to 43 kilometers (26.7 miles) and expand the channel-to-channel range up to 60 kilometers (37.3 miles). Thus, channel-attached LAN Server for MVS/ESA servers are not restricted to being physically located on the data center raised floor. Servers can now be placed much closer to the LANs they support. ESCON provides additional bandwidth and enables campus-wide connectivity.
In conjunction with the Open Systems Adapter for S/390, LAN Server for MVS will provide for communications protocol offload, providing for significant performance improvements for NFS users of the LAN server for MVS.
S/390 Strengths for LANs: Leverage S/390 strengths:
Managing Multiple Systems: The storage of workstation data on S/390 can reduce the burden on LAN based administrators. Many of the routine LAN administration tasks, such as backup and increasing DASD space on the server, can now be performed by the central information systems organization. This allows the LAN administrator to focus on other more important tasks.
Security: LAN Server for MVS allows the use of an External Security Manager (for example, RACF(TM)) to control user access to LAN File Services.
Note: LAN Server for MVS is also available as a charged stand-alone
product for users of MVS 5.1 or earlier, under the name LAN File
Services/ESA (program number 5648-039). Any further functional
enhancements will be implemented on the IBM LAN Server for MVS, not
the stand-alone product version.
Object Oriented Enhancements for MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2
As part of IBM's continuing object-oriented strategy, new function is being introduced on MVS: the SOMobjects for MVS Run-time Library (also available as part of the SOMobjects for MVS program product -- see Software Announcement 294-637, dated October 4, 1994, for product information) and the SOMobjects for MVS application classes.
SOMobjects for MVS Run-time Library: The SOMobjects for MVS Run-time Library provides a set of functions used primarily for creating objects and invoking methods on them. When an application program executes, the data structures and objects that are created, maintained, and used by the functions in the run-time library constitute the SOMobjects for MVS run-time environment. Customers who plan on buying vendor applications can use the run-time library to execute them on MVS without investing in the full SOM application development environment (IDL, compiler, frameworks, bindings, samples). This will also benefit those customers who develop their applications on a test system and then execute them on multiple production systems.
SOMobjects for MVS Application Classes: The SOMobjects for MVS application classes support the rapid development and integration of large scale, mission critical applications. These cross-industry application classes are fully enabled to operate with the System Object Model (SOM), the base objected-oriented technology in SOMobjects for MVS. Classes and frameworks contained in the application classes provide solutions to common application development challenges, such as:
The application classes run in the Batch and TSO environments.
Class libraries can help to significantly improve application development cycle time. This is because objected-oriented technology provides better business modelling which produces genuinely reusable code of high quality. Many of the classes, such as file folder, represent very high level application constructs that, when reused, offer outstanding productivity and contribute to lower development costs. When classes are reused and extended, the resulting classes not only inherit behavior, they also inherit built-in quality. This built-in quality reduces the likelihood of introducing new code defects. Costs savings are further realized because programmers do not have to create and maintain these libraries themselves.
The persistence framework eases the construction of persistent objects. The persistent class provides the services that control access to objects in a database. This not only allows access to new data but also, through wrappering, allows access to existing data. The persistent class supports the use of DB2 Distributed Relational Database Architecture(TM) (DRDA(TM)) to store and retrieve objects across multiple DB2 systems. Object persistence services convert objects between memory and the database and will automatically connect to the right system to "materialize" an object into memory and "dematerialize" it back to its proper store. This concept is especially important when file folders are distributed among users in different machines since the objects do not have to be on the same system as the folder itself. Because object retrieval and object updates are centralized in the persistence services, businesses can make major changes to where and how an object is stored without disrupting the rest of the application system.
The concept of unit-of-work groups related objects for a given task which can then be managed together as a unit. This eases the programmer's implementation of transactions and memory management. Groups of objects can be created, materialized, updated, and committed (or rolled back to a previous level) to a database. This maintains the integrity of the information in the database. The application determines which work activities are related and need to be kept together in the same unit of work. The application also controls the creating and discarding of the unit of work that contains the objects needed to perform related activities. This application control eliminates problems usually associated with other object-oriented systems which leave it to the programmer to ensure that all objects are properly discarded and memory properly returned to the system memory resource pool. With the unit-of-work concept, a programmer does not have to develop code to manage the updates of a diverse set of objects. Instead, the programmer decides on an object by object basis whether an object must be part of a transaction.
By exploiting the distributed capabilities of IBM's DB2 for communications of folder data across multiple systems that have the application classes installed, the need to redundantly distribute, store, and manage data across the enterprise is diminished. This also ensures that data retrieved is always the current data, regardless of where it is stored.
Customers who already have DB2 or IMS DB can store their objects using their existing databases, thereby eliminating the expense of having to buy a separate database to store them. Support for objects is in either DB2 or IMS DB formats.
Distributed Resource Management classes provide the facilities for integrating applications with external systems. It allows data under the control of an external application to be referenced in new applications.
Product Data Interchange improves the availability of data by providing an interface that allows users to import, export, and reference data that has different formats.
File Folder classes implement the concept of an electronic equivalent of a folder found in a typical office setting. From an end-user standpoint, the folder can be a ready to run "mini-application" that would contain heterogeneous types of data needed in support of a business process (such as an insurance claim, a hospital admission, or an engineering change). Application end users can fill folders with work-in-progress objects and distribute the folder electronically to coworkers. Since the folder can contain a diverse collection of objects, it can accommodate multiple departments and concurrent reviews. From a programmer's perspective the folder classes provide a rich set of application function which can be reused, extended, and tailored to fit the specific needs of a business process to be automated. File Folder classes come with a built-in history log that tracks what happens to a folder and who performed the action.
The User Interface framework eases the construction of menus, pop-ups, list panels, detail panels, help panels, and messages for non-programmable terminals, that are consistent with CUA(TM) guidelines. This multi-window environment provides a similar look and feel that is familiar to workstation users. The underlying user interface services provide support for scrolling, re-sizing, and cut and paste. Users can easily access many different application objects at once. Vital business information can be only a few keystrokes away.
Event Logging classes are used to record events thereby allowing businesses to synchronize their processes by understanding the events that occur in the system where the application classes are installed.
National Language Support classes provide the ability to support concurrent, multiple languages so that users of the same application on the same system can use their preferred language. This includes the capability to accept, store, and display data in their national language environment.
The SOMobjects for MVS application classes provide security on objects at the class/method level or individual object level in addition to the system security offered by RACF or equivalent products. Object security ensures, prior to any changes to the object, that the user has sufficient security authorization for the requested action. The security functions provided by the SOMobjects for MVS application classes are designed to prevent the inadvertent misuse of objects but may not in some cases prevent intentional misuse.
As the OO strategy is to adhere to OO standards, it should be noted
that any anticipated Object Management Group (OMG) standards with
respect to security and persistence architecture may differ from that
of the SOMobjects for MVS application classes security and
persistence architecture. Therefore users that need to take
advantage of the SOMobjects for MVS application classes security and
persistence services may wish to be conservative in this particular
investment of resources in order to minimize any possible future
migration costs in those areas.

There is significant expansion of the application interfaces required by the X/Open Portability Guide (XPG4 Base Branding). These new application interfaces conform to the POSIX standards and expand the UNIX functions on MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2.
The following additions to MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 and changes to supporting products will be made to achieve XPG4 Base Branding.
A significant set (90%) of the functions defined by the X/Open XPG4.2 Single UNIX specification are provided by MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2. UNIX applications can be ported to MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 with relative ease. While a major portion of the XPG4.2 specification is supported, it will take a second phase of development for MVS to become UNIX branded by X/Open. IBM intends to request UNIX branding from X/Open for MVS/ESA.
XPG4.2 functions which are deferred to a future release will be documented at general availability of the product.
Enabling New Applications: This will enable a customer to:
It is recommended that OpenEdition MVS/ESA 5.1 applications which used sockets migrate to the new socket API available in Language Environment for MVS and VM or to the MVS C/C++ Language Support feature in MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2.
Details on migration will be provided in the documents at MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 availability:
UNIX workstations and other workstations in a TCP/IP network that support the telnet or rlogin virtual terminal protocols can directly login to the OpenEdition Shell using this support.
Communications Server support contained in MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 enhances connectivity and performance for users connected to MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 through a channel or LAN-attached IBM RISC System/6000. This support allows terminals connected to asynchronous ports on a RISC System/6000 to operate as if they were directly connected to the MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 system. The RISC System/6000 combines input from multiple terminals and collects complete lines entered at terminals used with line-mode applications before sending the input to the MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 system. In addition, virtual terminal support that allows remote logins to MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 (with telnet and rlogin commands) is done on the RISC System/6000, further reducing the load on MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2.
By installing the Communications Server package provided with MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 OpenEdition on a channel or LAN-attached RISC System/6000 and doing some system administration on both systems, a standard RISC System/6000 running AIX Version 4.1.1 or higher can become an MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 Communications Server. PRODUCT POSITIONING
LANRES/MVS
LANRES/MVS offers unique function and services to NetWare LAN servers
and end users. These services, combined with the reliability of
S/390 storage and the systems management discipline of MVS, make
LANRES/MVS extremely attractive to those looking to integrate their
S/390 and LAN environments.
LAN Server for MVS
LAN Server for MVS should be viewed as a complement to network LAN servers by making the S/390 a compatible server of large objects that require real-time delivery, such as multimedia objects. The LAN Server feature provides an OS/2 compatible file system on MVS/ESA that works in conjunction with OS/2 LAN Server on the workstation. It extends the LAN environment by enabling transparent access to System/390 storage resources. For applications requiring very large capacity and high performance access, LAN Server for MVS is an excellent extension to LAN-based super servers. A key advantage is the ability to leverage customers' existing investments in large systems high bandwidth communications and storage resources. For many environments, the reuse of System/390 resources will be substantially less expensive than implementing and managing a unique outboard storage subsystem.
LAN Server for MVS NFS Offload support will interest customers who want to use their MVS/ESA host for serving "large objects" to TCP/IP NFS clients, such as multimedia or image files.
The NFS feature of DFSMS/MVS(TM) meets customer requirements for
general NFS UNIX file serving with the new abilities to access legacy
and POSIX compliant access to the Hierarchical File System in MVS
OpenEdition.
Objects on MVS
All businesses are looking for ways to reduce their application development cycle time. The traditional programming techniques used in procedural languages contribute to many of the software difficulties in data processing (DP) shops today. Associated with that are high people costs, high backlog of development work, unresponsiveness to changes in the business environment, and user dissatisfaction. How can OO technology help? Objects model real-world entities which can accurately reflect the actual business environment and can easily be changed when the environment changes. SOMobjects for MVS (see Software Announcement 294-637, dated October 4, 1994), along with its application classes, allows object reuse for much faster development of higher quality code thereby shrinking the backlog and reducing maintenance costs. Customers are likely to have large staffs who spend the majority of their time on the maintenance of existing applications when they could be concentrating more on creating new applications to address their business needs.
SOMobjects for MVS is an alternative to traditional programming techniques that helps to:
Customers who plan on buying vendor applications can use the SOMobjects for MVS run-time library to execute them on MVS without investing in the full SOM application development environment (IDL, compiler, frameworks, bindings, samples). This will also benefit those customers who develop their applications on a test system and then execute them on multiple production systems.
With objected-oriented technology on MVS, MVS shops can help lower their costs and improve programmer productivity.
Whether customers build new applications or build on existing ones,
they will benefit by investing in the OO technology and using
SOMobjects for MVS and its application classes.

JES2 and Sysplex:
Single MVS Image: Customers will be required to build a sysplex when MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 2 is installed. In a single system sysplex, XCF can be configured in local mode, so there is no requirement for a sysplex coupled data set.
If a JES2 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1 is used in conjunction with MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2, a sysplex is not required.
Multiaccess Spool with Multiple MVS Images Using One CPC: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 2 is installed. XCF must be configured with a sysplex coupled data set so that JES2 can keep track of member status.
If a JES2 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1 is used in conjunction with MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2, a sysplex is not required. For this type of configuration, the JES2 multi-access spool (MAS) must have seven or fewer MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 2 cannot be mixed with other pre-Version-5 levels of JES2 in the same JES2 MAS.
Multiaccess Spool with Multiple MVS Images Using Multiple CPCs: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1 is installed. A Sysplex Timer is required to synchronize time across the CPCs.
If a customer chooses to use a JES2 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 1, a sysplex is not required. However, the JES2 MAS that is implemented cannot contain more than seven MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, MVS/ESA SP-JES2 Version 5 Release 2 cannot be mixed with other pre-Version-5 levels of JES2 in the same JES2 MAS.
JES3 and Sysplex:
Single MVS Image: Customers will be required to build a sysplex when MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 2.1 is installed. In building a single system sysplex, XCF can be configured in local mode, so there is no requirement for a sysplex coupled data set.
If a JES3 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 1.1 is used in conjunction with MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2, a sysplex is not required.
Multiaccess Spool with Multiple MVS Images Using One CPC: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 2.1 is installed. The sysplex coupled data set required by XCF must be allocated and used.
If a JES3 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 1.1 is used in conjunction with MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2, a sysplex is not required. For this type of configuration the JES3 complex must have eight or fewer MVS images.
For customers using multiple MVS images, MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 2.1 cannot be mixed with other levels of JES3 in the same JES3 complex.
Multiaccess Spool with Multiple MVS Images Using Multiple CPCs: Customers will be required to use a sysplex when MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 2.1 is installed. A Sysplex Timer is required to synchronize time across the CPCs.
If a customer chooses to use a JES3 release prior to MVS/ESA SP-JES3 Version 5 Release 1.1, a sysplex is not required. However, the JES3 complex that is implemented cannot contain more than eight MVS images.
Note: APAR numbers for those products listed with PTF can be found in MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Planning: Installation and Migration with JES2 (GC28-1428) and MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Planning: Installation and Migration with JES3 (GC28-1429).

User Group Requirements: This announcement satisfies or partially satisfies 10 requirements from one or more of the worldwide user group communities, which include Australasian SHARE/GUIDE (ASG), COMMON, COMMON Europe, GUIDE International, G.U.I.D.E. Europe, Japan GUIDE/SHARE (JGS), Guide Latin American (LAG), SHARE EUROPE, and SHARE Incorporated.
Migration:
MVSCP Elimination: An MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 system can be IPLed only with an IODF. MVSCP definition is no longer supported. HCD provides a migration utility that can be used from an MVS/SP Version 2 system or higher to migrate existing MVSCP input data sets, as well as the related IOCP input data sets, into an IODF. An IODF created by any MVS/ESA SP Version 4 HCD can be used to IPL an MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 system.
ScreenView(TM): The ScreenView feature for MVS will not be offered with MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.
OpenEdition Migration Considerations:
Migration and Coexistence: In order to allow an orderly migration from earlier releases of OpenEdition MVS to OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2, OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 will support various down-level releases of prerequisite products. It is important to note that conformance to the XPG4 Base Branding and XPG4.2 standards will be certified only on OpenEdition MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 and the prerequisite products at the release and PTF levels as specified in this document.
Documentation on Migration/Coexistence: Migration and coexistence details are provided in the following documents.
Upward Compatibility for OpenEdition Applications: Applications and programs, written entirely in the C Language, created, compiled, and linked with previous releases of OpenEdition MVS will run unmodified on OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2. These applications and programs will not require modification or recompilation to execute on OpenEdition MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2.
Mixed applications, using C and COBOL or PL/I, can be executed without modification if they executed on OpenEdition MVS 5.1.
Applications that use Assembler calls may need changes to use some services.
C Compilers and Run-time Libraries: The MVS C/C++ Language Support feature of MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 provides access to the new application services of OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2. Programs created with other releases of the MVS run-time library or C Language Support feature will run on OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2.
Support of AD/Cycle C/370 1.2: The AD/Cycle C/370 Compiler Release 1.2 will execute on and create executable code for OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2. This compiler can use the AD/Cycle LE/370 Run-time Library 1.3 or the Language Environment for MVS and VM Run-time Library, the AD/Cycle C/370 Language Support feature of OpenEdition MVS 5.1, or the MVS C/C++ Language Support feature of MVS 5.2. The new application services of OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 will not be available to back-level run-time libraries.
Support of C/C++ Compiler Release 3.1: This compiler uses the Language Environment for MVS and VM Run-time Library or the MVS C/C++ Language Support feature of OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 to produce modules that will execute on OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2. The MVS C/C++ Language Support feature of MVS 5.2.2 can exploit the new services of OpenEdition MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2.
Support of Other Compilers and Run-time Libraries: Please see the providers of other C or C++ compilers for their description and limitations of support for OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2.
Migration of Sockets API: The integrated sockets support for BSD 4.3 supported in OpenEdition MVS/ESA 5.1 and shipped in OpenEdition MVS/ESA 5.1 needs to be migrated to Language Environment for MVS/VM to take advantage of the sockets support defined in XPG4 and XPG4.2.
Note: BSD 4.3 socket support will be replaced with socket support as specified by XPG4.2 in the next release of OpenEdition MVS/ESA.
Migration of Data, Data Services, and Security:
Data: All Hierarchical File System data stored on DFSMS/MVS 1.2 systems can be accessed using DFSMS 1.2 and a PTF that supports XPG4 Base Branding function.
Security: Using RACF 2.1 with the Toleration PTF (APAR OW09834) installed on OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 is possible for migration purposes with restrictions. Programs that use restricted MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 UNIX functions will receive ENOSYS returns. The restricted functions will be documented in the document MVS/ESA OpenEdition MVS (SC23-3015).
RACF will also note unsuccessful attempts to use restricted functions. Auditing of new functions will not be possible. The revision in the security rules for setting the "sticky bit" in directories is not possible with RACF 2.1. This means that only the system administrator may change "sticky bits" on such systems.
Communication Systems: PTFs for TCP/IP 3.1 must be installed. No down-level TCP/IP support is provided.
Help: BookManager 1.2 can be used with OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2. To use it requires a modification to assure the C/370 2.0 RTL is STEPLIB'd for OHELP execution.
Shells and Utilities: Use of the OpenEdition MVS 5.1 Shells and Utilities is possible on OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 systems. Shell commands are compatible with those released on OpenEdition MVS 5.1. No modification of shell scripts created for OpenEdition MVS 5.1 is necessary. Additional features are available but do not compromise upward compatibility of scripts or users.
Debugger 'dbx': The OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 dbx feature must be used with OpenEdition MVS 5.2.2 systems. The OpenEdition MVS 5.1 dbx feature may yield unpredictable results on OE MVS 5.2.2 systems.
S/390 Developers Association: A new membership program has recently been unveiled for software developers using S/390 platforms. The program is called the S/390 Developers Association. The goals of the program are to enhance communication between S/390 customers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and IBM's S/390 development organizations and to provide assistance to ISVs in obtaining the resources necessary to develop and support solutions on S/390 platforms.
A previously announced membership program, "Your Connection to VM," is being combined with this new program. There is no fee for membership in the S/390 Developers Association. The S/390 Developers Association provides an online conferencing service, through TalkLink, that is available to S/390 customers as well as ISVs. The section of the service available to customers contains bulletin boards, news and announcements concerning S/390, and IBM tools for the various platforms. The developers only section contains special bulletin boards, IBM internal development tools, and news for developers.
The S/390 Developers Association provides additional support for developers with technical and marketing services. Technical support includes porting information, White papers with IBM views on technical topics, access to testing facilities (at a minimal fee), and special developer prices on IBM hardware and software. Marketing support provides for inclusion in S/390 product catalogs, listings in the National Solution Center Database, and software replication and distribution services from IBM Software Manufacturing Solutions (ISMS). The MVS, VM, and VSE development organizations will also offer special, invitational programs that provide developers with technical disclosures, early access to platform products, and special marketing opportunities.
Those wishing to participate in the online service of the S/390
Developers Association should call TalkLink at 800-547-1283 to
request a subscription application. Software developers who would
like to join the S/390 Developers Association or would like
additional information should call 800-627-8363 and request an
application kit.
System Integrity
IBM will accept APARs where the installation of MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 and MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 introduces an exposure to the system integrity of MVS. Refer to Software Announcement P81-174, dated October 21, 1981. This control program is intended to run authorized.
IBM will accept APARs where the installation of the SOMobjects for
MVS run-time and application classes introduces an exposure to the
system integrity of MVS. These programs are intended to run
unauthorized.
Security, Auditability, and Control
Data security and auditability in the MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 and MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2 environment are enhanced by the functions available in the Resource Access Control Facility (RACF) licensed program (5695-039).
Security APARs: IBM will continue to accept Security APARs for MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 and MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2.2. Security APARs are for reporting problems in existing security mechanisms where the problem descriptions do not meet the precise definition of system integrity, but do constitute an exposure to the security of the system as a whole or to an IBM product which runs on the system. Originally announced in Software Announcement 289-581, dated October 24, 1989, this commitment is being enhanced, as follows, to accept Security APARs when the installation or use of this MVS product violates B1 criteria.
MVS B1 Support: Selected MVS/ESA products, collectively called a trusted computing base (TCB), were evaluated by the United States Department of Defense's National Computer Security Center (NCSC), found to meet the criteria for a B1 level of trusted system, and posted on the Evaluated Product List in September 1990. The following products, along with specific service, were evaluated in 1990:
MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2, when running on ES/9000 systems with appropriate levels of the other TCB products, is designed to meet the B1 criteria as they were applied to the MVS/ESA TCB during the 1990 evaluation. The criteria applied were based on the Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (DOD 5200.28-STD) and included interpretations made by the NCSC and the evaluation team. The claim being made today is based solely on security analysis performed by IBM. The updated TCB has not been evaluated by the NCSC. IBM cannot predict that a B1 rating would be awarded, should an evaluation be requested and carried out. IBM will accept a Security APAR when the installation or use of MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 violates the B1 criteria.
For more information on the appropriate product levels, supported features, and limitations, refer to MVS/ESA Planning: B1 Security for MVS/ESA Version 5 (GC28-1440), which will become available at MVS/ESA SP Version 5 Release 2 general availability.
Note: OpenEdition services has been designed to meet the criteria for a C2 security and must be disabled in a B1 environment.
SOMobjects for MVS Application Classes: The SOMobjects for MVS application classes provide additional security and auditability. Security is provided at the object level. A user with insufficient access authority to an object will not be able to create, change, or delete an object. Any attempt to do so will result in an exception. In addition, the user interface service handles object security by disabling action bar choices which are incompatible with the user's security authorization.
Auditability is provided through the Event Logging function which provides an audit trail of the significant events within the major processes.
A log of security violation attempts enables the Security Administrator to determine the specific object against which the violation occurred as well as the process in which it occurred. The security functions provided by the SOMobjects for MVS application classes are designed to prevent the inadvertent misuse of objects but may not in some cases prevent intentional misuse.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communication
facilities.

Distributed Feature One-Time Charge: Customers who pay a one-time charge for additional distributed features may copy machine-readable program material and documentation. One copy may be made for each additional distributed feature ordered.
Variable Charges: The applicable graduated one-time charge or graduated monthly license charge will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the licensed program is licensed for use.
For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the current charges between the two groups. For downgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will be no adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.
For upgrades or downgrades of monthly license charge licenses, the monthly license charge applicable to the higher or lower group will apply.
