The WebSphere ILOG Business Rule Management Systems (BRMS) product line is used to define, deploy, execute, monitor, and maintain the variety and complexity of business decision logic used by operational systems within an organization or enterprise.
WebSphere ILOG BRMS V7.1 builds on the strengths of IBM's market-leading offering to deliver:
Enhancements in WebSphere ILOG BRMS V7.1:
For details, refer to the Hardware requirements section.
|Planned availability date|
WebSphere ILOG BRMS manages the life cycle of business rules and allows business decision logic to be externalized from core application code and processes, thus allowing both technical developers and line-of-business experts to define and manage decision logic that drives the behavior of operational systems.
New and improved capabilities in WebSphere ILOG BRMS V7.1:
WebSphere ILOG JRules V7.1 includes Rule Studio for Java, a developer tool for creating rule-based decision services and for integrating business rules into any Java application or architecture, and Rule Execution Server for Java, which provides execution and services provisioning for those decision services on major J2EE application servers.
WebSphere ILOG Rules for .NET V7.1 includes Rule Studio for .NET, a developer tool for creating rule-based decision services and for integrating business rules into any .NET application or architecture, and Rule Execution Server for .NET, which provides execution and services provisioning for those decision services on the .NET platform.
WebSphere ILOG Rules for .NET V7.1 provides a rule testing sample, allowing developers to create test scenarios in Microsoft® Excel (2007), which business users can then use to verify that rule changes comply with a set of defined test cases. This sample guides developers in the creation of a customized, graphical testing interface. Business users can then populate these scenarios with test data and invoke the test execution directly from within Excel against the Rule Execution Server for .NET. Test scenario data (input, expected results, and actual results) and result status information are viewable with a single worksheet.
WebSphere ILOG Rule Team Server V7.1 delivers an enterprise rule repository and line-of-business user tools for authoring, managing, and deploying business rule-based decisions. It supports projects initially created by either Rule Studio for Java or Rule Studio for .NET (Note: not all Rule Team Server features are enabled for .NET rule projects). WebSphere ILOG Rule Team Server installs on major J2EE application servers and also provides components for installing on Microsoft Windows® systems with Active Directory and SQL Server, using a Java capability embedded in the package.
WebSphere ILOG Decision Validation Services V7.1 extends Rule Team Server with line-of-business focused testing and simulation capabilities for Java-based rule projects. Decision Validation Services installs onto Rule Team Server V7.0, or later. It also provides an additional auditing and reporting capability for the Rule Execution Server for Java. The Decision Warehouse component provides a query tool to easily find information on how rules are being executed in production applications and to tie that information back to the associated rule definition in Rule Team Server.
WebSphere ILOG Rule Solutions for Office V7.1 is a business use-accessible rule authoring and maintenance plug-in for Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Excel 2007.

Education is a key component to ensuring software success. A study by the IBM WebSphere Support Team has shown that a lack of training is the third most common cause of deployment issues for three years running. Our curriculum provides a unique training value built on exclusive product knowledge direct from IBM Developers cemented with expert instructors and flexible time and cost-saving training options. The IBM WebSphere Education team works closely with product developers and services organizations to ensure that the courses we offer provide the most up-to-the-minute technical and product information. Our courses place an emphasis on the advanced knowledge and insight that only these sources can provide. We draw from a deep pool of IBM technical experience in the development of our courses, and pass that knowledge on to our students.
With over 200 courses across eight curriculums, WebSphere Education provides training that spans the spectrum of skills needs from introductory product overviews to advanced programming and administration. Hands-on labs let you work with fully functional versions of the software you are studying to round out your training experience. Several training options are available, including classroom, private customized courses, or instructor-led or self-paced online learning letting you train from your office without traveling.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)
Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology, defined within the PVU Table by processor, vendor, brand, type, and model number at the following Web site, and the number of processors made available to the program
IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores.
Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (see Web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores1 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
Note: Express and Workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies: The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM Express and Middleware Programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.
Note: Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
Note: Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
Note: A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.
Resource Value Unit (RVU)
Resource Value Unit (RVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. RVU Proofs of Entitlement are based on the number of units of a specific resource used or managed by the program. Licensee must obtain sufficient entitlements for the number of RVUs required for Licensee's environment for the specific resources as specified in the table below. RVU entitlements are specific to the program and the type of resource and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with RVU entitlements of another program or resource.
Note: Some programs may require licenses for the resources available to and the resources being managed by the program. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the resources used by the program directly, Licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the resources managed by the program.
Note: Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the resources used by the program directly, Licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the resources managed by the program.
Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User accessing the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.
Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.
The programs in this announcement have Value Unit-based pricing.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.
This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap.
IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.
These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the programs. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the programs and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the programs as long as support is in effect.

IBM WebSphere ILOG Rules for .NET 7.1: L-ASAY-83ZBMH
The programs' License Information will be available for review on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.
You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.

|IBM Electronic Services|
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
