Overview

Continuing its commitment to provide customers with increased flexibility and capability to meet their business requirements with a cost-effective computing environment, IBM is announcing the availability of the S/390 (R) Integrated Server.

The Integrated Server will integrate 256 MB of memory, internal Serial Storage Architecture (SSA) RAID-5 DASD, and features such as Enterprise Systems Connection (ESCON (R)) and parallel adapters, and an integrated battery backup unit within the system unit. Thirty-six GB of usable DASD will be installed in the base configuration. If customers need more SSA storage, they may increase the amount of usable storage up to 255 GB within the system unit. Customers will have the ability to use Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) I/O slots and Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) slots for ESCON and S/390 parallel channels, and industry standard connections to Local Area Networks (LANs), Wide Area Networks (WANs), and other peripheral devices. The S/390 Integrated Server is capable of executing S/390-based applications.

The Integrated Server supports current levels of OS/390 (R), MVS/ESA (TM), VM/ESA (R) and VSE/ESA. For most workloads, this server provides processor performance comparable to the 9221 Model 170.

The IBM S/390 Integrated Server is being offered exclusively by the qualified Business Partner -- Distributors and their qualified Solution Providers in the United States.

Base Configuration and Features

Integrated in the base configuration of the Integrated Server are the following:

Features available for the Integrated Server are: You may install additional increments of 18.2 GB SSA DASD. When the maximum DASD is installed, you will have 255 GB of usable storage and 36 GB reserved for RAID-5 support. In order to obtain more than 255 GB of usable storage, customers should consider attaching to other peripheral devices. Each of the 16 drives may be "hot swapped."

Customers desiring direct access to S/390 DASD may implement this attachment using the ESCON channel feature. This feature will also permit connection to many other supported I/O devices and control units. The parallel cards permit customers to connect to many types of parallel devices, such as tape media, printers, and communications controllers. Direct attachment to S/390 DASD is not supported using parallel adapters of the Integrated Server. Customers should consult with Business Partners to ensure ESCON or parallel channel adapter support is available for the devices which they are considering.

A list of IBM approved PCI and ISA adapters have been identified and provided to Business Partners to assist in meeting customer requirements. These adapters will provide customers with the ability to exercise PCI and ISA options. Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) provides for the connection of peripheral devices used with personal computers. Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) similarly provides for connections to personal computer peripherals such as modems. There

Replacement Market

Users of S/370 and older S/390 general-purpose processors can gain substantial savings by moving to this new, attractively priced technology now. Many customers with existing S/370 and S/390 hardware and software are participating in the Local Area Network (LAN) environment. The Integrated Server addresses business needs by providing the opportunity to replace these existing systems and to grow in the future, while continuing to use S/370 and S/390 applications and skills. Instead of porting S/370 applications to a new platform, the Integrated Server allows for easy upgrades and maintains the classic S/390 strengths. Thus, applications do not have to be moved to an entirely new platform lacking the S/390's advantages. In most cases you can continue to connect to existing tapes and printers with the parallel connection, or utilize the ESCON feature to connect to new devices as well as those which could not be connected in the past.

This system is a possible replacement for older IBM S/370 and S/390 processors (43XX,9371,9373,9375, 9377 and 9221-170) and lower models depending on your requirements. Please refer to "IBM S/390 Integrated Server ... Is It Right for You?" at

to ensure that the replacement is appropriate.

Many customers in this group continue to run older, non-ESA software. By replacing S/370 systems with the Integrated Server, you can take advantage of the latest technology, including S/390 ESA software, while retaining current skills. The S/390 software provides complete Year 2000 support.

Substantial savings may be achieved through lower maintenance costs on both the processor and DASD, lower energy costs, lower connectivity costs, and lower environmental costs. These potential benefits are derived from integrated disk characteristics with their high-reliability, low-power requirements, LAN connectivity, and CMOS technologies.

Application Server

Application servers have a variety of client/server usages. Some examples are:

This application server is ideal for a department or small business, because it can run S/390 applications for the Integrated Server unchanged. These offerings allow remote locations to run (some unattended), while providing remote users with data and consistent business applications across the enterprise. In addition, these application servers solve business needs by bringing specific workloads into LAN environments. The results include improved productivity, local control, and reduced telecommunication costs.

The Integrated Server can participate as a server or client in an existing LAN with access to host data. As a client, it can seamlessly participate in any LAN environment. As a server, the Integrated Server can run the appropriate LAN functions associated with S/390, depending on customer workload. This choice allows customers flexibility and availability while also satisfying the need to integrate business solutions with consistent applications.

Application Development

The S/390 Integrated Server is a cost-effective platform used to develop client/server applications in the S/390 environment. This processor is ideal for small application development teams. It exploits the productivity of S/390 development tools and provides immediate access to the real S/390 architecture for testing and debugging applications.

Developers can use S/390 3GL and 4GL tools and object-oriented technology to shorten the development cycle for S/390 environments. When the Integrated Server becomes a dedicated resource for development and testing, it can use the same tools as the host, thereby increasing the availability of the host production system, eliminating dependencies on the host, and reducing risks to the production system.

The Integrated Server is an ideal platform for identifying and developing necessary changes without impacting the host system. The time-of-day (TOD) on the Integrated Server is easily changed. The result is a dedicated platform for date-reliant testing of system applications.

With the Year 2000 fast approaching, it is important that you continue to assess and plan a course of action to address potential challenges during this transition. The Integrated Server supports the Year 2000. When used in accordance with associated documentation, the server correctly processes, supplies, and accepts information within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The S/390 Integrated Server is a low-cost offering for users of older S/370 and S/390 interested in an S/390. This system has a limited I/O bandwidth when compared to the S/390 Multiprise . Therefore, the Integrated Server is for customers who do not require the I/O bandwidth and processor performance of the S/390 Multiprise. For most workloads, the processor provides performance comparable to the 9221 Model 170.

The S/390 Integrated Server delivers a fully functional S/390 hardware platform. The parallel channel adapters provide connections to most of the customer's existing tapes, printers and other communications devices. Using ESCON channel adapters, direct access to S/390 DASD devices is provided for integration with your current and future assets.

STATEMENT OF GENERAL DIRECTION

In 1999, S/390 intends to announce and deliver a processor with 2X performance of the processor shipped in this announcement.

For those customers who are considering upgrading to that capability in 1999, the software price will be at the then-prevailing terms for processors of similar capacity.

RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY, AND SERVICEABILITY

S/390 Integrated Server offers high levels of reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) with the following capabilities.

S/390 Microprocessor Error Checking

Extensive error checking throughout the array, logic, and data paths ensures ops protection and data integrity. The generation and parity protection on both address and data lines of the host processor bus to the adapters aid in the adapter recovery process.

Error Correction Code (ECC)

Memory error checking and correction code allows for single bit error correction and double bit error detection. Single bit errors are transparently corrected by the processor, and the bad memory location is immediately rewritten to correct a soft failure. Double bit errors interrupt the processor, and the failing storage address is presented to the control program for recovery.

SSA RAID-5 Integrated DASD with Concurrent Maintenance

SSA's bi-directional loop architecture provides data protection for critical applications by ensuring that a single cable failure will not prevent access to data. Should an SSA loop be broken, the RAID adapter continues to access all devices on the loop segments. Once the path is restored, the adapter automatically reconfigures the system to return to normal operation.

Should a disk fail, the concurrent maintenance capability allows the disk to be removed without disrupting access to data on the rest of the loop. Online rebuild, which can take place in the background provides for quick recovery once a disk has been replaced.

N+1 Power Thermal Subsystem with Concurrent Maintenance

The power subsystem is designed with N+1 redundancy. Failure of a power thermal component does not cause a system outage. Concurrent replacement of a failed component results in an avoidance of a planned outage.

The power system offers dual primary (AC) power feeds. Each feed is electrically isolated and enables redundant power paths.

Internal Battery Feature (IBF)

The optional Internal Battery Feature provides backup input power. The feature is packaged internal to the machine. It can be used to provide additional protection from a power disruption.

Concurrent Maintenance

Concurrent hardware maintenance allows the replacement of a failing unit with no requirement to power off the system. This function enhances the processor availability, since no outage is required for the repair action. Concurrent maintenance capability exists on the following:
