Encina Products
Encina is a fully functional environment for building robust, highly scalable, three-tier client/server applications. Encina supports a rich transaction structure, integrated queueing, management of indexed data, and several communication paradigms, including Remote Procedure Call (RPC), conversational, and work flow. Encina's administrative facilities simplify the online configuration of servers, including replicated servers and servers built without Encina.
Encina fully exploits Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) security and naming services to provide unparalleled security throughout the environment and dynamic configuration. With its host facilities, Encina can be a full participant with host transactions, including support for Syncpoint (Sync Level 2). Encina applications can start transactions that can then extend to the host, and host applications can start transactions that can then extend to Encina.
Transarc Encina products are available on AIX (R), Solaris, HP-UX, Digital UNIX (R), and Windows (R) platforms. The following general functions, each with a separate license, are provided:
Encina Monitor Suite: Provides the complete collection of services for running and managing Encina application servers. An Encina Monitor Suite is needed on any machine running any Encina server applications. The Encina Monitor Suite includes the application server run-time environment for C, C++, and COBOL and the following run-time interfaces:
Management facilities, include:
Encina Application Development Tools: Provide the Transactional Interface Definition Language (TIDL) compiler and include files and sample programs for building new applications.
Encina Host Gateway Suite: Contains facilities for bridging the LU6.2 protocol from TCP/IP environments used by Encina to System Network Architecture (SNA) environments used by hosts. The Host Gateway Suite support SyncPoint (Sync Level 2) and bidirectional communications.
DCE Encina Lightweight Client (DE-Light)
Provides connectivity from the Web or lightweight desktop clients to DCE or Encina services. The product contains Java (TM) and Windows 3.1 clients that can be freely distributed, a gateway that depends on DCE Base Services, and a DCE client program for gateway administration. The Java client leverages the security features of common Web browsers to provide Secure Socket Layer (SSL)-based security between Web browsers and the gateway; combined with DCE security, this gives end-to-end security from Web browsers to DCE and Encina services.
DE-Light Gateway: Relays requests from lightweight clients to and from DCE or Encina services.
DE-Light Client Connection: Provides the right to connect a client to the gateway. The number of client connections purchased limits the number of concurrent clients that may be used at any one time. There is no charge for client code.
DCE Products
The Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) provides a comprehensive collection of services for building scalable, secure distributed systems. Based on the Open Software Foundation (OSF) DCE specification, the DCE products are available on AIX, Solaris, HP-UX, and Windows platforms. The following general functions, each with a separate license, are available:
DCE Base Services: Provide the Solaris run-time environment needed to build and deploy applications. Included in the base services are the run-times for both client and servers, client command line programs for performing administration, and the Distributed File System (DFS) client. DCE Base Services must be installed on a machine running any other DCE application or server. Both the time server and audit server are included with DCE Base Services. The equivalent function is available on the other operating platforms and is included with the AIX and HP-UX (as DCE Executive) operating systems.
DCE Application Development Tools: Provide the Interface Definition Language (IDF) compiler and include files and sample programs for building new applications.
DCE Security Service: Implements the security services for DCE, including managing the security registry of users and passwords, and control of Client Access (TM) to any server in a DCE cell via tickets. The DCE Security Service also includes the default password authentication, or strength-checking program.
DCE Cell Directory Service: Implements the naming system within a cell. The DCE Cell Directory Service also contains the facilities to connect the DCE Cell Directory Server with a Domain Name Server (DNS) for intercell name resolution.
DCE Naming Gateway: Locates user-written servers from the native Microsoft (R) RPC client programs on Windows 95 and Windows NT (TM) machines (which are not otherwise running DCE).
DFS Products
The DFS distributed file system is a high-performance, scalable, secure method for sharing remote files across a distributed environment. The DFS Web Secure, the newest feature of DFS, extends access to DFS files via the Web with the security to protect the corporate enterprise.
The DFS Starter Kit provides enhanced setup capabilities for initial install and configuration of the DFS products.
DCE Base File Server (BFS): Makes local file systems, such as UFS and CD-ROM file systems, accessible to DFS clients. The DCE Base File Server is preferred over the DCE Enhanced File Server only in those situations where the data on a machine must be managed by an existing, installed file system (such as a mounted CD-ROM).
DCE Enhanced File Server (EFS): Provides high-performance, high-availability file sharing with support for replicating file data, online reconfiguration of file storage, distributed online backup, and access control lists on files and directories.
Upgrade from DCE Base File Server to DCE Enhanced File Server: Adds the functions in EFS that are not present in BFS.
NFS to DFS Secure Gateway: Provides uniform and secure access to DFS files from Network File System (NFS) clients. The gateway offers an easy migration path for introducing DFS into environments with widely installed NFS clients.
Related Vendor Products
Intellisoft DCE/Snare: Provides transparent DCE-based security for TCP/IP-based applications, enabling rapid deployment of these applications in a secure, mission-critical environment. DCE/Snare can be used to secure either off-the-shelf applications or custom-built legacy applications, incorporating them into the DCE security framework with no code changes. DCE/Snare provides comprehensive security, reliability, scalable access control, and remote security management for these applications. DCE/Snare contains a rules-based Adaptive Security Framework (ASF) for flexible definition of security policies, and a graphical authorization and security management environment that enables remote control of all security aspects of any node in the enterprise.
DCE/Snare comes with the drivers and manager processes required to run the program; additionally, it requires DCE Base Services.
DCE/Snare Console: Provides remote graphical installation, configuration, and security management functions for all DCE/Snare components in the network.
Intellisoft DCE/Snare-Lite
Enables non-DCE nodes to participate in the same DCE/Snare security framework as other DCE-based nodes. Communications between machines with DCE/Snare-Lite and machines with DCE/Snare are protected using RSA public key technology.
Intellisoft DCE/Sleuth
Provides immediate analysis of DCE activity, resulting in quick problem determination and resolution. This graphical protocol and network analyzer for the OSF Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) provides complete RPC decoding, performance, graphing, and timing information through a highly intuitive, Motif-based graphical interface. It operates in a passive, non-intrusive manner and does not require application instrumentation or modification to existing code. It is extensible to support decoding.
Platinum PC-Enterprise
Integrates UNIX and enterprise-wide file print resources into the Windows file system. This product family packages the following powerful PC-to-UNIX connectivity features for PCs running Windows 95, Windows 3.1, or Windows for Workgroups 3.11:
Year 2000
