Overview
Recognizing that the increasing demand for data fuels the need for greater bandwidth in your network, IBM is adding Fast Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) to its set of S/390 (R) Open Systems Adapter 2 (OSA-2) features. Fast Ethernet is ideal for file transfer and system backup applications. It brings the server to your network, allowing you to leverage S/390 strengths: security, backup/recovery, availability, and centralized access to data.
Fast Ethernet offers ease of use, familiarity, and co-existence with 10 Mbps Ethernet LANs. If you are experiencing LAN backbone congestion, increased delay in traffic traversing the campus, or decreased response times, Fast Ethernet may be a solution.
As part of our continuing responsiveness to customer requirements, IBM is also offering Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) enhancements for those customers who are investing in ATM networks, as well as several usability enhancements.
Also included in this announcement are significant enhancements to S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers Generation 3 and Generation 4, offering increased function and options.
Intended Customers
Fast Ethernet is being offered for OS/390 (TM), MVS/ESA (TM), VM/ESA (R), and VSE/ESA (TM) customers with SNA/APPN (R) or TCP/IP networks.
The Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature is for enterprises requiring:

Fast Ethernet OSA-2
10 Mbps or 100 Mbps through a Single RJ-45 Connector: The new Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature has a single connection that automatically adjusts to 10 megabits per second (Mbps) or 100 Mbps; you can use this feature for your 10 Mbps Ethernet network, or use it for your higher speed 100 Mbps Ethernet network today or in the future.
Shared, Switched, Half or Full Duplex: With a shared-media LAN, users on the LAN share the available bandwidth, and with increased traffic, the LAN can become congested. With the introduction of LAN switching, a node (device/workstation) is no longer competing for the bandwidth; the node has access to the full bandwidth. Switching delivers dedicated bandwidth to each user. Fast Ethernet OSA-2 supports shared-media LANs and LAN switching.
The Fast Ethernet OSA-2 operates at a data rate of 10 or 100 Mbps per second (half duplex), in addition to 20 or 200 Mbps (full duplex, port configurable). Half-duplex transmission is two-way communication, but only in one direction at a time. Full-duplex transmission is simultaneous, two-way communication.
Full-duplex operation can improve server throughput by doubling the available bandwidth when used on a dedicated LAN segment.
Auto-negotiation for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX: The LAN speed can default to auto-negotiation or be set explicitly. If the default is used, the Fast Ethernet OSA-2 and the attached hub, switch, or router (for example, IBM 2216, IBM 3746) auto-negotiate the speed between them. This can eliminate the possibility of network disruption caused by connecting 10BASE-T (10 Mbps) or 100BASE-TX (100 Mbps) networks.
Concurrent Repair and Upgrade: Like the ENTR (Ethernet/Token-Ring), FDDI, and ATM OSA-2 features, the Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature supports concurrent hardware maintenance, allowing replacement of a failing unit with no requirement to power off the S/390 Server. This enhances availability, since no system outage is required for a repair action.
Concurrent Licensed Internal Code (LIC) allows the activation of a patch concurrent with the system operation, further increasing availability.
It is often possible to concurrently add an OSA-2 feature to an I/O cage. This may eliminate an outage to upgrade the channel configuration.
Software Environments for Fast Ethernet: A Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature is supported in the following environments:
Refer to Software Announcement 297-231 dated June 24, 1997, eNetwork Communications Server Enhancements for S/390 -- An Enterprise-Class Solution for Network Computing.
Refer to Software Announcement 297-044 dated March 11, 1997, Communications Server for MVS/ESA Release 2 with VTAM (R) Version 4 Release 4 for MVS/ESA.
Refer to Software Announcement 298-049 dated February 24, 1998, OS/390 Version 2 Release 5 Availability and Release 6.
ATM OSA-2 Enhancements
Enhanced SNA/APPN Availability: The following support is enabled via OSA/SF and is being made available for the OS/390, MVS/ESA, VM/ESA, and VSE/ESA environments when using an ATM OSA-2 feature configured to emulate a Token-Ring in a SNA/APPN environment:
The number of sessions established through a port is monitored, and the user sessions are distributed across the configured ports.
Redundancy: A secondary path between the LAN workstation and the host system can now be configured. If the primary path becomes unavailable, the secondary path will receive the LAN traffic. This increases system availability and simplifies network management.
Overflow: User sessions flow through the primary OSA-2 port until the session capacity has been reached. Additional user sessions will automatically flow to the next OSA-2 port. Since all user workstations are identically configured, network administration is simplified and the network becomes more scalable. New users can be added non-disruptively.
Extended SNA/APPN Network Management: OSA/SF in conjunction with the SNA/APPN support on the ATM OSA-2 feature (as well as the Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature):
Refer to Software Announcement 298-049 dated February 24, 1998, OS/390 Version 2 Release 5 Availability and Release 6.
Usability Enhancements for OSA-2
The following enhancements are now available, in an ongoing effort to respond to customer requirements. OSA/SF will now allow the customer to:
IBM Business Initiatives
S/390 Server Consolidation Initiative: The S/390 Server Consolidation initiative's goal is to continue to drive the consolidation of workloads to S/390, achieve cost reductions, and exploit new technologies and functions that enhance enterprise management, security, and application integration. In this way, you have the ability and flexibility to compete in your market and grow your business.
IBM delivers the flexibility customers require to re-host their workloads to S/390: a direct connection to the network using any of the OSA-2 media types that meet your requirements -- Token-Ring, Ethernet/Fast Ethernet, FDDI, or ATM.
S/390 Network Computing Initiative: The S/390 Network Computing (NC) initiative's goal is to continue the rapid evolution of S/390 as the platform of choice for highly available, scalable, and secure e-business. S/390 is a key player in the Internet/intranet opportunity.
With the introduction of the Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature, IBM is reducing costs and deployment time while offering:
S/390 Small and Medium Business Initiative: The S/390 Small and Medium Business initiative's goal is to have IBM continue to solve the needs of VSE, VM, and OS/390 customers who use S/390 Multiprise 2000-sized servers. The Fast Ethernet OSA-2 feature is a cost effective solution, reducing configuration complexity, but delivering a bandwidth boost.
S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers Generation 3 and 4 Enhancements
The hardware and software prerequisites are unchanged with this announcement. These new functions may require Licensed Internal Code (LIC) updates. For the appropriate hardware service levels, contact your IBM representative.
Integrated Coupling Facility (ICF) Capability: IBM introduced the optional Integrated Coupling Facility feature on the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers -- Generation 3 in April 1997 and the S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers -- Generation 4 in June 1997. The S/390 G3 Servers and S/390 G4 Servers offered either one or two ICF features which allows up to two Processing Units (PU) to be configured to function as a Coupling Facility running Coupling Facility Control Code (CFCC). Today, IBM has extended the ICF concept to allow up to four features on the S/390 G3 Servers and S/390 G4 Servers. The purpose of the optional ICF features is to provide the customer with additional flexibility in configuring a Parallel Sysplex (TM) while reducing the cost in establishing and running a coupling facility on a S/390 G3 Server or S/390 G4 Server. A PU configured as an ICF can run only Coupling Facility Control Code (no customer software can run on the ICF engines) and therefore does not incur any software licensing costs. The optional ICF features can be used in a production Coupling Facility (using Coupling Links) or Integrated Coupling Migration Facility (ICMF) Coupling Facilities (CFs).
The optional ICFs, running CFCC, can be used in Coupling Facility logical partitions only. The Coupling Facility LPAR configurations can include up to four CF partitions, one or two ICMF partitions or a mix of the two (up to a maximum of four partitions). The ICFs can be assigned to a single CF partition or spread across up to four CF partitions. An ICF feature is used only when IML'd in PR/SM (TM) LPAR mode and is allocated after System Assist Processors (SAPs) and general Central Processors (CPs) are assigned. The customer, when purchasing ICF features, will reduce the number of spare CPs. Once installed, the ICFs will no longer be available for use as spare CPs. The optional ICFs also work in conjunction with the new Dynamic ICF Expansion feature.
The Integrated Coupling Facility features may lower the cost of a Parallel Sysplex system by eliminating software fees for PUs being used in the Coupling Facility. Since the ICF partitions are isolated by Licensed Internal Code (LIC) from OS/390 logical partitions, ICF use will not affect MSU pricing.
The Integrated Coupling Facility (ICF) is available as follows:
The Dynamic ICF Expansion feature is available to every ICF partition (up to four) in a S/390 G3 Server or S/390 G4 Server. Each ICF coupling facility partition has its own ability to specify the number of ICF features (up to four) that are dedicated to that partition and the amount of additional capability it can acquire. The trade off between using ICF features and the CPs in the LPAR shared pool is the exemption from software license fees.
Dynamic ICF Expansion is available on 9672 G3 Models RA4, R14, RB4, R24, RC4, R34, R44, R54, R64, R74, R84, and R94; 9672 G4 Models RA5, R15, RB5, R25, RC5, R35, R45, R55, R65, R75, R85, and R95.
Enhanced Coupling Link Support: Connectivity between production/test logical partitions and Coupling Facilities in a Parallel Sysplex has been enhanced with the increase in the number of coupling links orderable through the standard MES process on the S/390 G3 Servers and S/390 G4 Servers. This improves the flexibility of configuring the links and provides the facilities needed to connect between logical partitions in the S/390 G3 Servers and S/390 G4 Servers and other systems or Coupling Facilities in the Sysplex. The maximum number of Coupling Links orderable on the CMOS S/390 Parallel Enterprise Servers was 16 links with an RPQ available to allow up to 32 links. This announcement extends the maximum number of links available from 16 to 32 for both the S/390 G3 Servers and S/390 G4 Servers when using the HiPerLink adapter (#0016) and eliminates the need to process RPQs for the additional capability. The 9674 Coupling Facility Models C04 and C05 continue with the capability to configure up to 32 links orderable through MES upgrades.
Enhanced Coupling Link support is available for the following 9672 G3 and G4 models: G3 Models RA4, R14, RB4, R24, RC4, R34, R44, R54, R64, R74, R84, R94, RX4, and RY4; G4 Models RA5, R15, RB5, R25, RC5, R35, R45, R55, R65, R75, R85, R95, RX5, and RY5.
New Memory Options (1.5 GB and 3.0 GB): Selecting the correct amount of processor storage for the S/390 G4 Server and the 9674 Coupling Facility Model C05 has been enhanced with the availability of 1.5 and 3.0 GB storage sizes. This announcement provides improved granularity in the 1.0 GB to 4.0 GB range. IBM leads the industry by offering up to 16 GB of processor storage on the S/390 G4 Servers and the 9674 Coupling Facility Model C05. Size and granularity enhance the ability to balance S/390 system resources with the performance of the processor for the customer application.
The 1.5 GB Processor Storage option is available on 9672 G4 Models RA5, R15, RB5, R25, RC5, R35, R45, and R55 as well as 9674 Model C05 with processor feature numbers 0701-0705.
The 3.0 GB Processor Storage option is available on 9672 G4 Models RA5, R15, RB5, R25, RC5, R35, R45, R55, R65, R75, R85, R95, and RX5 as well as 9674 Model C05.
Year 2000 Sysplex Test Datesource: The Year 2000 Sysplex Test Datesource provides the capability to create a test Parallel Sysplex with a synchronized time and date other than that of the production systems. This eliminates the need to dedicate an entire S/390 Server for Year 2000 testing of a multi-member Parallel Sysplex. This testing capability is currently available on the S/390 G3 Servers, S/390 G4 Servers, and IBM S/390 Multiprise 2000 Servers in conjunction with the ICMF and provides a cost-effective tool for Year 2000 Parallel Sysplex testing.
Additional information concerning Year 2000 support may be obtained through your local IBM representative or IBM Business Partner (TM). Customers may request the IBM document Year 2000 and 2 Digit Dates: Guide to Planning and Implementation (GC28-1251).
VM/ESA Guest-Coupling Support: VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3.0, with 25 years of experience in providing leading-edge hypervisor support, extends this capability with new guest support for Parallel Sysplex. OS/390 customers can now exploit the advantage of S/390 virtual machines in testing their Parallel Sysplex environments. VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3.0 provides the Coupling Facility support required to run one or more OS/390 Parallel Sysplex environments on one VM/ESA image. This capability is available on the S/390 G3 Servers, S/390 G4 Servers, and IBM S/390 Multiprise 2000 Servers.
For VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3.0 customers, this is a cost-effective alternative to the Integrated Coupling Migration Facility with PR/SM. VM/ESA Guest-Coupling is provided for purposes of pre-production testing of Parallel Sysplex environments and does not support connections to any facility outside the VM image. Year 2000 testing is available via a new VM command.
Refer to Software Announcement 297-409 dated October 7, 1997, Preview: IBM VM/ESA Version 2 Release 3.0.
Cache Structure User-Managed Duplexing: A new mechanism will be added to the Coupling Facility (CF) to allow customers the option of having cache structure data duplexed in another CF under the control of the CF-exploiting subsystem or product. Initial exploitation of this capability by DB2 (R) is planned for duplexing of data contained in its Group Buffer Pool (GBP) structures. This duplexing capability will allow extremely fast "fail over" from one copy of the structure data to the other in the event of a CF failure or, more typically, a planned CF outage. This duplexing "fail over" will operate much more quickly than today's mechanisms. Furthermore, the new duplexing mechanism will handle some failure situations that are currently not handled. This will significantly enhance the availability characteristics of the data contained in these duplexed structures, and thus improve the availability of those Parallel Sysplex workloads which exploit this capability. This function is planned for the OS/390 Version 2 Release 6 time frame and will run on the S/390 G3 Server, the S/390 G4 Server, and the 9674 Coupling Facility Models C04 and C05.
Refer to Software Announcement 298-049 dated February 24, 1998, OS/390 Version 2 Release 5 Availability and Release 6.
