The Personal AS for Windows products provide a set of decision support business tools which can be used either individually or combined to create a fully integrated solution to business problems.
The four products are :
Provides the following chart types allowing users to select the most appropriate presentation method for their information - Line charts, Surface charts, Scatter charts, Bar charts, Mixed charts and Pie charts. A choice of presentation methods, including three-dimensional display, give a wide and flexible choice to users when presenting information. This expands presentation alternatives and simplifies audience interpretation.
Reports are of two basic types: detail, for ordering and showing the information used to make decisions, and summary, which shows the result of analyzing the information. Using Report users can total across or down data tables, calculate new columns, percentages and averages, show maximum and minimum values and include header and footer text. Layout and design of the report is controlled by the user through the graphical user interface which means that users can tailor a report to meet the specific needs of their solution, for example a monthly summary of department expenditure, and then save the report for future use, possibly as a component of a procedure.
The information needed to solve a business problem is often spread across several different data tables. Business users are often not aware how much information is available to them or how it is organized. This problem is solved by helping users find the information they need with Schema and Query. Schema gives a graphical representation of selected tables and automatically draws links between related columns. Users can examine the links, accept or reject them, and create new links to identify the information they need. Once complete the Schema definition can be saved for future use. Query can be used either directly with data tables or with a predefined Schema. It enables the user to select the sub-set of information needed to solve a business problem from a mass of available data. Once created the Query can be saved and integrated with other Personal AS for Windows functions to build a solution.
Many business problems are unique to the corporation in which they occur - and a solution cannot be bought "off-the-shelf". The solution must be tailor-made which traditionally can be time consuming and costly. This problem is solved by Procedure which allows users to build applications interactively on their terminals. Procedure provides a blank desk-top and palette of icons (or objects). Icons represent the various tools that can be used for example, a chart, report, data table, Query, output terminal, or printer. Applications created with the Development product can be saved as an icon and used in a procedure. Using a mouse a user drags the required icons onto the desktop and draws links between them. Links define the logical flow through the procedure which, once defined, can be encapsulated and saved as an icon. The encapsulated procedure can be run directly from the saved icon. It can also be placed onto the procedure desktop and used in the definition of another procedure. In this way a set of low level procedures can be defined and combined when needed to give end-users a powerful procedure capability. Using Procedure end-users can create business solutions interactively without needing to learn a programming language. Each solution can be automatically checked for logical consistency and saved for future use where it can be copied and modified to build further solutions.
Table is the tool for creating and modifying data. It is used to create and store the user's own data, and as the repository for data gathered from other sources e.g. DOS, OS/2, OS/400, DB2, SQL/DS etc.
A Personal AS for Windows user can create and edit Application System commands, view the results of Application System execution, and include Application System commands and procedures in Personal AS for Windows processes.
Some organizations and industry sectors will have very specific decision support requirements which are not fully satisfied by the standard tools and functions provided by the Personal AS for Windows Base product. Personal AS Development for Windows is designed to meet this need by providing a comprehensive set of programming tools to enable production of industry specific business solutions. A set of Application Programming Interfaces is provided to allow customers and business partners to add their own modules. Typical users will be independent software vendors producing business applications, corporate DP departments producing applications for use within their own company, or individual departments producing applications for their own use. The tool set provided allows interactive syntax-free definition of the end-user interface and generation of Application System Language (ASL) program code. The generated code can be modified and enhanced using the program editor. Personal AS Development for Windows has been designed to enable rapid creation of business solutions that fit seamlessly onto the platform.
Modern computing techniques provide individuals and corporations with an ever increasing amount of raw data gathered from all areas of their business activity. Business professionals frequently need to turn that raw data into information that can be used to make effective business decisions. Statistics provides over 50 different statistical analyses and methods grouped in the following general categories: Exploratory methods -- for raw, unexamined data, Relations -- both correlation and regression, Model fitting -- for forecasting and making predictions, Tests -- for testing samples and identifying patterns, Distributions -- for probability analysis, Quality control -- including industry standard SQC charts, and Analysis of variance -- for identifying influential data. Personal AS Statistics for Windows provides a powerful tool that enables users to analyze data and search for trends and patterns. It uses today's data to forecast tomorrow's trends and enables corporations to make informed business decisions about future market needs.
Effective financial planning is a major component for the
success of any
organization. Personal AS Business Planning for Windows is designed
to enable planners and managers to identify market trends,
understand the effects of price increases, changing interest rates,
raw materials cost fluctuations, demographic buying trends, and
many other factors that can influence corporate balance sheets.
Using a simple
definition language planners can
build a powerful multi-dimensional computer
model of a company's business structure that can interpret and
analyze detailed corporate information and provide a
sound basis for future business decisions.
Personal AS Business Planning for Windows combines
independent hierarchical dimensions

provides a powerful solution for business professionals
and financial planners who want to analyze and prepare plans at
any level within a company.
Development enables rapid prototyping of applications including automatic code generation. A set of Application Programming Interfaces is provided to allow customers and business partners to add their own modules. The integrated Menu Editor allows rapid creation of menus for use on action bars. The Window Editor allows interactive creation of a graphic user interface. The Program Editor will automatically generate skeleton code from menus and windows designed by the Window and Menu editors, and enable users to add complex logic to their program. Finally, the Make Facility enables users to manage the program code, menus, and windows used to create an application. It simplifies maintenance, and supports reuse.
Extensive on-screen help using hypertext, indexing, and
graphics reduces the time spent solving problems and ensures
that users always have the right level of documentation for
their version of the product.
Applications created with Personal AS Development for Windows can be transferred to any other Personal AS for Windows user either on diskette or by LAN. These applications will run directly on the Personal AS for Windows platform and users do not need the Development product installed.
Applications created with Personal AS Development for Windows can be easily transferred to the Personal Application System/2 Version 2.02 platform. Similarly, applications created using Personal Application System Development/2 Version 2.02 can be easily transferred to the Personal AS for Windows platform. This easy portability of applications makes migration between the products straightforward, and is particularly suitable for customers who have mixed OS/2 and Windows environments.
Data, chart specifications, report specifications, queries, graphical
procedures and business plans are interchangeable
between Personal Application System/2 V2.02 and Personal AS for Windows.
Both Procedure and Development
give users the ability to create new business
tools and applications. Once created the new
tools can be transferred to other Personal AS for Windows users either
on diskette or by LAN.
In this way the range of applications,
which are available in a company, can grow
in a way that matches the needs of the user.
Personal AS for Windows uses standard and simple procedures to instal and maintain all family products, bringing important benefits to customer support personnel.
Personal AS for Windows is the third member of the family which also includes Application System, operating in the MVS and VM environments, and Personal Application System/2, operating in the OS/2 environment.
Personal AS for Windows provides equivalent function to Personal Application System/2 Version 2.02, and there is full two-way exchange of data, chart specifications, report specifications, queries, graphical procedures, applications and business plans between the two products. This provides an easy migration, if required, from Personal AS for Windows to Personal Application System/2.
Personal AS for Windows provides opportunities for co-operative processing with Application System V2 and Application System V3.1. The Personal AS for Windows user can create and edit Application System commands, view the results of Application System execution, and include Application System commands and procedures in Personal AS processes. In addition, data and specifications can be exchanged between Personal AS for Windows and Application System.
