Abstract

IBM Power Systems and earlier UNIX systems consisting of the IBM System p5, IBM eServer pSeries and IBM RS/6000 product lines provide great value. These innovative systems feature IBM's leading-edge technology and run the top-rated operating systems of AIX, IBM i and Linux. This broad product line ranges from powerful workstations to mission-critical symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) servers for ERP, SCM, CRM, transaction processing, web serving; demanding scientific and technical computing and business intelligence tasks. These platforms provide the power to create change and the flexibility to manage it, with thousands of applications that provide real value.

Model abstract 7014-T42

The IBM 7014 Rack Model T42 is a 2.0 meter rack that will address the special requirements of customers who want a very tall enclosure to house the maximum equipment in the smallest possible floor space. The T42 provides 42 EIA units (42U) of usable space. Because of its height, special shipping and handling procedures may be required in some cases.

The T42 is compatible with the #0553 19-inch rack and compatible with past racks used such as the Model R00/S00 and RS/6000 racks. Features include:

Description

The 2.0 meter 7014-T42 rack has 42 EIA units (42U) of vertical mounting space for 19-inch drawers. An EIA unit is an industry standard for indicating vertical mounting space in a rack, where 1U equals 44.45 mm (1.75 in). This rack meets the Electronics Industries Association EIA-310-D standard. The standard color is black. The racks are also orderable in a white color that matches the some older IBM equipment.

Side Panels and Side To Side Rack Suite Attachment

The rack side panels are optional, and can be quickly installed or removed from the outside of the rack, with no tools required. This design allows a row of racks without side panels to be bolted together in a continuous suite, using the optional side to side rack connecting hardware. When multiple racks are joined in this way, cables can be easily run between racks without having to exit the continuous rack enclosure. A small gap is maintained between the two adjacent racks, which is filled by three matching steel trim pieces that snap into place on the front, top, and rear, between each rack. The trim pieces cover the space between each rack for an enhanced appearance and for additional protection of the equipment inside the racks. Side panels are needed only for the two end racks of the suite. The same removable side panels are used for both the Model T00 and Model T42 racks. On T42 racks, there are additional side covers for the portion of the rack that extends above 1.8 meters.

Front Door and Front Trim Kit

The optional front door has an appearance that is consistent with the S80 and other current RS/6000 Enterprise Systems. The main surface is steel, with a perforated hole pattern that is designed to provide the required ventilation and sufficient visibility of indicator lights for equipment installed inside the rack. Each rack must be ordered with either a front door or a front trim kit (but not both). The front trim kit consists of steel parts that snap into the front of the rack at the left, right, and top edges. They are painted to match the overall rack color and present an attractive appearance that is consistent with the RS/6000 brand image. Because the T42 rack is taller than the T00 rack, the front doors, front trim kits, and side to side rack connecting kits require different sets of features for the two models.

Ruggedized Rack Feature

For enhanced rigidity and stability of the rack, the optional Ruggedized Rack Feature provides additional hardware that reinforces the rack and anchors it to the floor. This hardware is designed primarily for use in locations where earthquakes are a concern. The feature includes a large steel brace that bolts into the rear of the rack. It is hinged on the left side so it can swing out of the way for easy access to the rack drawers when necessary. The Ruggedized Rack Feature also includes hardware for bolting the rack to a concrete floor, and bolt-in steel filler panels for any unoccupied spaces in the rack.

Rear Door Heat Exchanger for 7014-T42

The IBM Rear Door Heat Exchanger is an effective way to assist your AC system in keeping your datacenter cool. It removes heat generated by the systems in the rack before the heat enters the room, allowing your air conditioning unit to handle increasingly dense system deployments. It may also offer a convenient way to handle dangerous "hot spots" in your data center.

Inside the door of the heat exchanger, sealed tubes filled withcirculating chilled water effectively remove up to 55% of the heat generated in a fully populated rack and dissipate it so it is not released into the data center. In fact, the heat exchanger can remove up to 15 kW (approximately 50,000 BTUs/hr) of heat generated by a full server rack, based on total rack output.

The heat exchanger can be easily installed by customers and moved to different 7014-T42 racks to address changing cooling requirements. Its unique design uses standard fittings and couplings and, because there are no moving or electrical parts, helps increase reliability. It can be opened like any rear cover, so serviceability of racks fitted with a heat exchanger is as easy as a standard air cooled rack.

Other Standard Equipment and Optional Features

Each rack is shipped with standard equipment that includes a rear door, front and rear anti-tilt plates, four leveling feet, snap-in filler panels for any unoccupied rack space, and an AC power distribution unit (PDU) mounted inside the rack in an area that is separate from the drawer mounting area. There is room for up to 4 PDU's without using any of the rack's 42U capacity. The rack drawer mounting area is centered relative to the two sides of the rack, which provides ample room to route cables within the frame on both the left and right sides. There are numerous anchor points formed into the frame where cables can be tied down for strain relief.

Feature Availability Matrix

The following feature availability matrix for MT 7014 uses the letter "A" to indicate features that are available and orderable on the specified models. "S" indicates a feature that is supported on the new model during a model conversion; these features will work on the new model, but additional quantities of these features cannot be ordered on the new model; they can only be removed. "N" indicates that the feature is not supported on the new model and must be removed during the model conversion. As additional features are announced, supported, or withdrawn, this list will be updated. Please check with your Marketing Representative for additional information.

        |T| A = AVAILABLE S = SUPPORTED

Supported PDU Combinations for 7014 Models T00 and T42

Each 7014-T00 or 7014-T42 rack is shipped with one of the available base PDU features. The choice of which initial PDU is ordered for the rack will determine which additional PDU features may be ordered for the rack, either in the original rack order or in a later MES order. The following chart shows the allowable PDU combinations within a single T00 or T42 rack.

Feature descriptions

The following is a list of all feature codes in numeric order.

Attributes, as defined in the following feature descriptions, state the interaction of requirements among features.

Minimums and maximums are the absolute limits for a single feature without regard to interaction with other features. The maximum valid quantity for MES orders may be different than for initial orders. The maximums listed below refer to the largest quantity of these two possibilities.

The order type defines if a feature is orderable only on initial orders, only on MES orders, on both initial and MES orders, or if a feature is supported on a model due to a model conversion. Supported features cannot be ordered on the converted model, only left on or removed from the converted model.

(#0469) Customer Specified Rack Placement

Provides the customer the ability to specify the physical location of the system drawers and attached expansion drawers in the rack. The customer's input is collected and verified via the marketing configurator. The Clients request will be reviewed for safe handling by checking weight distribution within the rack. Final approval for the requested drawer placement location will be provided by the Manufacturing Plant. This information is then used by IBM Manufacturing to assemble the system components (drawers) in the rack accordinating to the Clients request.

The CFReport from the marketing configurator must be submitted to:

www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/power/csp

(US Business Partners and Distributors can bypass this step.)

If #0469 is not on the initial rack order, component placement within the rack will be determined by IBM.
