Rational Publishing Engine is a document generation application that automatically extracts data from your disparate repositories and creates elegant multi-format documents.

Document creation made simple

Rational Publishing Engine is designed for ease of use. You do not have to change the way you work to enjoy the benefits of IBM Rational Publishing Engine. You have the option of generating documents directly from:

Generating documents directly from the Rational Publishing Engine V1.2 Launcher is enhanced starting with a selection from Central Management's repository of shared designs. Prompts are then generated for runtime variables which could consist of drop-down lists of predefined static values or dynamic values based on the data source and text input values.

Features introduced with this release enable designs to be created with increased flexibility and reduced reliance on domain or environment knowledge required by the user generating the document. Consider the impact of defining global variables within Central Management, having logical names representing data source locations. Not only does this eliminate the need for report generators to know specific URLs, it also enables administrators to maintain data source location changes in one place.

Productivity and flexibility in designing high-quality, compliant documents

Extract data from a single source or from multiple sources while IBM Rational Publishing Engine ensures that you get compliant, high-quality documents in Microsoft™ Word, PDF, HTML, or XSL-FO with complete flexibility in document style. IBM Rational Publishing Engine allows you to effectively present your extracted data with document features such as richly formatted text, images, OLEs, tables, figures and captions, hyperlinks, and tables of contents.

With this release, flexibility and re-use are extended not only by the types of artifacts supported in modular design, but also in how they can be incorporated. Physically embedding or dynamically referencing design assets from Central Management's shared repositories to be sequentially executed or nested increases the extent to which skills can be leveraged, ongoing maintenance can be simplified, and standards compliance can be implemented. As well, variable support in data queries provides dynamic flexibility at run time with no performance costs.

In addition to introducing Central Management for sharing design assets, IBM Rational Publishing Engine V1.2 provides several new editing and debugging aids that will increase productivity of report designers:

The power and extensibility JavaScript™ support brings to Rational Publishing Engine have been enhanced with this release as well. Scripting can now be included directly within the template and be embedded from an external file sourced from a Central Management shared repository. With the sharing of complex data structures between script expressions and the ability to manipulate data in JavaScript , designs are simplified with increased control in the format of generated data.

Rational Publishing Engine continues to include sample design artifacts with guidelines that help you get up and running quickly. Design the content and format of your documents with an easy-to-use, intuitive interface designed with user-friendly features such as drag and drop and preview capabilities.

High-performance document generation

Rational Publishing Engine is designed for speed, agility, and scalability. Capabilities such as parallel processing have enhanced document generation performance beyond that provided by Telelogic DocExpress and Rational SoDA® , ensuring that quality documents are delivered on time.

With Rational Publishing Engine V1.2, remote generation scalability and performance have been enhanced by:

The ability to view and monitor an organization's document generation jobs is enabled through the Monitor and Control component. Automatically enabled for remote document generations, this component can also be used for local generations. With V1.2, filtering has been enhanced to include date/time as well as status, allowing administrators to view document generation jobs -- current and completed -- to pause, cancel, resume, or delete.

Charge metrics definitions

Authorized User

Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User accessing the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case, the following applies. Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Floating User

Floating User is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A Floating User is a person who is accessing the Program at any particular point in time. An Install is an installed copy of the Program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The Program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Floating User simultaneously accesses more than one Install of the Program, the Floating User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee must obtain separate entitlements for each Floating User simultaneously accessing the Program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example: via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the Program or that is otherwise managed by the Program is considered a separate User of the Program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage , where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM , including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

For clarification, note that if for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
