DESCRIPTION
New models of the 3270-PC System Units provide all the system
function found on existing models.  The 3270-PC supports concurrent
operation of up to four host interactive sessions, two local note pad
sessions, and up to six IBM PC DOS sessions.  The 3270-PC operating
with the 3270-PC Control Program Version 1.2.2 and IBM PC DOS 3.1 or
3.2 provides similar function except that only a single DOS session
is supported.  3270-PCs with the Enhanced PC keyboard or XMA require
3270-PC Control Program Version 3.0.  See Software Requirements for
additional information.  Screen-management functions are incorporated
in the 3270-PC Control Program to allow the user to select screen
configurations, screen presentation, and manipulate and interact with
displayed information.
In addition, the new models provide:
o   A new system board containing 640 Kb of memory, requiring no
additional memory cards to reach 640 Kb
o   Use of a new 20 Mb fixed disk file that is standard in Model X7X
and optional in Models X3X, X5X
o   Use of new half-high 360 Kb diskette drives.  One is standard in
Models X3X, X7X and two are standard in Model X5X.  It is
optionally available in Models X3X, X7X, where one additional
    diskette drive may be installed.
The XMA uses a single full length card slot and contains 1 Mb
of memory and a standard parallel printer port.  The optional
Expanded Memory 1 Mb Module Kit, increases the XMA memory to a 2 Mb
total.  These features may be used in the 3270-PC when there is need
to expand the memory within the IBM PC DOS 640 Kb address space and
especially when multiple DOS applications are used.  A maximum of six
PC DOS sessions may be configured.
The IBM Enhanced PC keyboard is now offered, optionally in
place of the 3270-PC Keyboard, on new 5271 Models only.  This
keyboard offers functional and usability improvements over the
earlier IBM PC keyboard.  Cursor movement keys and system function
keys have been separated from the numeric pad area and function keys
are separated and repositioned above their equivalent numeric keys
across the top of the keyboard.  This new keyboard requires less
space than the 3270-PC keyboard and is compatible with the Enhanced
PC family keyboards.  It is recommended for users who will be using
the 3270-PC primarily as a Personal Computer.  No field upgrade kit
is available for the enhanced PC keyboard on the 5271.  The Enhanced
PC keyboard is not available for the 5271-002, 004, 006, 024, or 026.
IBM 3270-PC Control Program Version 3.0 is required for either
the XMA or Enhanced PC keyboard.
As in existing models, the new 3270-PC Models provide:

* Configuration support D must be at release level 64.1 or later.
The multiple logical terminal facility of the 3270-PC allows
the user to designate up to four terminal addresses in a single
3270-PC.  This requires one physical port in the 3274 Control Unit.
When planning installation of the 3270-PC, consideration must be
given to the number of logical and physical addresses to be used
compared to the maximum number of addresses and ports available.  The
number of addresses and ports available is dependent on the 3274
Model and the method of system attachment.
When the 3274 has 3270-PCs attached operating in distributed
function terminal mode, Table B specifies the maximum number of
3270-PC or other logical terminals that can be attached to the 3274.

CATEGORY B TERMINAL RESTRICTIONS: Category B terminals (e.g., 3277
Display Stations) cannot be used on the same 3274 when the 3274 is
customized to support 3270-PCs operating in distributed function
terminal mode.:  The 3274 attached printers support the 3270-PC with
local copy print capability.  Host-initiated copy is in either SNA or
non-SNA mode.
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS All 3270-PCs that include the XMA or IBM
Enhanced PC Keyboard require the IBM 3270-PC Control Program Version
3.0 and IBM PC DOS 3.1 or 3.2.  Other new 3270-PCs may use 3270-PC
Control Program Version 1.2.2, 2.1, or Version 3.0 and IBM PC DOS 3.1
or 3.2.  Multiple PC applications can run concurrently in multi-DOS
configurations if the PC applications observe the IBM PC DOS and BIOS
(basic input/output system) protocols and conventions.  (See the
Technical Reference Manual for the IBM Personal Computer.)
SOFTWARE COMPATIBILITY: The 3270-PC is data stream compatible with
IBM 3270 displays in alphameric application environments.  Existing
alphameric applications will run on the 3270-PC unmodified (in their
current screen size).  No programming changes are required of current
alphameric applications unless the program is affected by 3274
Control Unit configuration restrictions (e.g., no category B
terminals) or required hardware functions not available with the
3270-PC (e.g., light pen, magnetic readers, encryption/decryption, or
unsupported screen sizes).
The 3270-PC will accept base 3270 and 3270 extended data
streams (DFT mode only).  It will support 3270-PC File Transfer.  In
distributed function terminal mode, 3270 extended data stream can be
used to support extended highlighting and host graphics.
3270 COMPATIBILITY: The 3270-PC is an extension of the IBM 3270
Information Display System.  It provides 3270 data stream
compatibility (single partition) with 3270 displays.  There are
operating differences in terms of screen management facilities, the
keyboard, methods of highlighting and peripheral device attachment.
For performance information, see Performance.
The 3270-PC in control unit terminal mode attaches to a 3274
Control Unit (any model and configuration support), a 3276 Control
Unit Display Station or a 4361 Processor via its workstation adapter.
In distributed function mode, the 3270-PC attaches to a 3274
with configuration D (release 64.1 or later), using one physical port
and from one to four logical addresses.
Applications may utilize formats of any model of the 3278
(except Models 1, 2A) or 3279 (except Model 2C).  The 3270-PC permits
up to four logical host terminals to be operable simultaneously in
one 3270-PC using a 3274 port.  Connection may be via coax cable,
telephone twisted pair with IBM/ROLM 3270 Coax-to-Twisted Pair
adapter, or IBM Cabling System Media.  Attachment to the 3274 may
also be made via the IBM 3299 Terminal Multiplexer.
Sessions requiring screens larger than 1920 characters will
require scrolling to view the entire presentation space.
The 3270-PC is 3270 compatible in alphameric application
environments; current alphameric applications will run unmodified.
PERFORMANCE: When a 3270-PC is connected to a local channel unit
(3274-31A, -31D, -41A, -41D) in control unit terminal mode, an
increase in system response time of about 100 ms may be experienced
when running base data stream applications as compared to a 3278
Display.
During file transfers in control unit terminal mode, a
noticeable impact on the response times of other terminals connected
to the same local channel control unit may be experienced.  Duration
of the delays is dependent upon the file size, frequency of
transfers, type of control unit or modem, and customer setup.  The
3270-PC File Transfer licensed programs transfer files in 2000-byte
blocks to minimize the impact on the network that large file
transfers might have.
