z/VM V5.4 is designed to extend its System z virtualization technology leadership by exploiting more capabilities of System z servers including:
- Greater flexibility, with support for the new z/VM-mode logical partitions, allowing all System z processor-types (CPs, IFLs, zIIPs, zAAPs, and ICFs) to be defined in the same z/VM LPAR for use by various guest operating systems.
- Capability to install Linux on System z as well as z/VM from the HMC on a System z10 that eliminates the need for any external network setup or a physical connection between an LPAR and the HMC.
- Enhanced physical connectivity by exploiting all OSA-Express3 ports, helping service the network and reducing the number of required resources.
- Dynamic memory upgrade support that allows real memory to be added to a running z/VM system. With z/VM V5.4, memory can be added nondisruptively to individual guests that support the dynamic memory reconfiguration architecture. Systems can now be configured to reduce the need to re-IPL z/VM. Processors, channels, OSA adapters, and now memory can be dynamically added to both the z/VM system itself and to individual guests.
The operation and management of virtual machines has been enhanced with new systems-management APIs, improvements to the algorithm for distributing a guest's CPU share among virtual processors, and usability enhancements for managing a virtual network.
Security capabilities of z/VM V5.4 provide an upgraded LDAP server at the functional level of the z/OS® V1.10 IBM® Tivoli® Directory Server for z/OS and enhancements to the RACF Security Server to create LDAP change log entries in response to updates to RACF group and user profiles, including user passwords and password phrases. The z/VM SSL server now operates in a CMS environment, instead of requiring a Linux distribution, thus allowing encryption services to be deployed more quickly and helping to simplify installation, service, and release-to-release migration.
The z/VM hypervisor is designed to help clients extend the business value of mainframe technology across the enterprise by integrating applications and data while providing exceptional levels of availability, security, and operational ease. z/VM virtualization technology is designed to provide the capability for clients to run hundreds to thousands of Linux servers in a single mainframe, together with other System z operating systems such as z/OS, or as a large-scale Linux-only enterprise-server solution. z/VM V5.4 can also help to improve productivity by hosting non-Linux workloads such as z/OS, z/VSE™, and z/TPF.

Improved scalability and constraint relief
z/VM V5.4 provides additional enhancements for scalability and constraint relief.
Virtual memory performance enhancements
Moving specific CP data structures above the first 2 GB of main storage reduces contiguous-frame allocation searches for requests in the first 2 GB. This may help improve performance and scalability for systems with more than 2 GB of storage, particularly those supporting large virtual storage environments.
Expanded shared memory addressability
The constraint has been removed that restricted a Discontiguous Saved Segment (DCSS) to being defined below 2047 MB of virtual storage. DCSSs can now reside anywhere within the first 512 GB of guest storage. While any one segment still cannot exceed 2047 MB in size, a guest system may use multiple DCSSs to access shared memory greater than 2047 MB in total. For example, this helps to allow many DCSSs to be used together to provide larger sizes needed for Linux filesystems, block devices, and shared objects.
IBM is working with its Linux distribution partners to include support for this function in future Linux on System z distributions.
Dynamic memory upgrade
System z servers provide a dynamic storage-reconfiguration capability to change the amount of main storage available for use in a logical partition (LPAR) while the partition is active. The configuration of storage for an LPAR includes an initial amount of main storage, plus an additional reserved amount, defined in fixed-size increments. The reserved storage can be assigned and accessed on demand, using the dynamic storage-reconfiguration function.
The new z/VM dynamic memory-upgrade capability exploits this system architecture for its own use and also virtualizes it for guest use.
Storage can be added to a z/VM configuration when:
- Another LPAR is deactivated
- Storage exists that is not currently assigned to any active LPAR
- Another LPAR releases storage
- Additional main storage is installed
The LPAR customization process can assign storage to an LPAR as "initial" or as "reserved" increments. "Reserved" storage in an LPAR is further separated by z/VM into "standby" and "reserved" storage. z/VM can increase the size of its main storage dynamically by bringing on-line designated amounts of standby storage. In addition, z/VM guests that support dynamic storage reconfiguration can increase and decrease their amounts of main storage dynamically.
z/VM does not support the release of real storage. Once storage has been added to a running z/VM configuration, it cannot be removed without a z/VM system shutdown, LPAR deactivation and reactivation, and z/VM system IPL.
Virtualization technology and Linux enablement
Increased flexibility with support for z/VM-mode partitions
The IBM System z10 introduces z/VM-mode logical partitions (LPARs), which allow multiple types of System z processors to be defined in the same z/VM LPAR, including:
- Central Processors (CPs)
- Integrated Facility for Linux Processors (IFLs)
- IBM System z10 Integrated Information Processors (zIIPs)
- IBM System z10 Application Assist Processors (zAAPs)
- Internal Coupling Facility Processors (ICFs)
z/VM V5.4 expands its guest support for specialty processors to allow these processor types to be defined as virtual CPUs. This new capability increases flexibility and simplifies systems management by allowing a single z/VM V5.4 system to:
- Operate z/TPF, z/VSE, and z/OS guests on CPs
- Operate Linux on System z as guests on IFLs and optionally on CPs
- Offload z/OS system software process requirements, such as DB2® workloads, on zIIPs
- Provide an economical Java™ execution environment under z/OS on zAAPs
- Operate coupling facility virtual machines in support of a Parallel Sysplex® test environment on ICFs and optionally on CPs
This support is exclusive to z/VM V5.4 and the IBM System z10 and satisfies the statement of direction made in Hardware Announcement A08-0208, dated February 26, 2008.
Dynamic virtual processor management
z/VM V5.4 removes one of the consequences of stopped virtual processors for virtual processor prioritization. Prior to z/VM V5.4, a guest's CPU share was distributed equally among its virtual processors by dividing its share value by the number of nondedicated virtual processors in the configuration, regardless of whether the virtual processors were in a stopped or started state. z/VM V5.4 performs share redistribution whenever a virtual processor is started or stopped and no longer includes stopped virtual processors in the calculation of how much share to distribute to each virtual processor. The share redistribution also continues to occur in z/VM V5.4, as in previous releases, at the time a SET SHARE command is issued or when the number of defined virtual processors is altered.
Linux on System z provides a daemon (cpuplugd) that automatically starts and stops virtual processors based on virtual processor utilization and workload characteristics, exploiting z/VM V5.4 dynamic virtual processor management. The cpuplugd daemon is available with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 SP2. IBM is working with its Linux distributor partners to provide this function in other Linux on System z distributions.

Capability added to dump Linux guests to SCSI disks
z/VM V5.4 provides the capability to dump Linux on System z guests to FCP-attached Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) disks. Compared to other methods like VMDUMP or dump to ECKD™ disks, this new capability may provide the following advantages:
- More guest virtual memory can be dumped because SCSI disks can be larger than ECKD disks.
- Dumping on SCSI disks avoids the need to convert a VMDUMP into a Linux tool format.
- The same SCSI dump mechanism now can be used when running Linux in a logical partition and in a z/VM virtual machine.
This new function works cooperatively with the SCSI Linux system dumper and can be used to generate system dumps that can be viewed by the Linux dump analysis tools crash or lcrash.
Network virtualization
More efficient transmission of network data
TCP/IP for z/VM V5.4 dynamically discovers the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) size of a given IPv4 or IPv6 Internet/intranet path. This helps to reduce fragmentation along the path, thus minimizing wasted network resources and helping to improve throughput by sending datagrams at the path MTU size. This function is automatically enabled for all IPv6 links and optionally can be enabled for IPv4 links.
Enhanced physical connectivity by exploiting all OSA-Express3 ports
z/VM V5.4 recognizes all four ports on an OSA-Express3 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) machine feature. There are two PCI Express (PCI-E) adapters per feature, with two ports per adapter, for a total of four ports per feature. This capability was announced in Hardware Announcement A08-0504, dated May 06, 2008.
Activating all four ports on an OSA-Express3 feature provides more physical connectivity to service the network and reduces the number of required resources (I/O slots, I/O cages, fewer CHPIDs to define and manage). With double the port density, reduced latency, and improved throughput, OSA-Express3 GbE is designed to satisfy the demands of bandwidth-hungry applications.
Four-port exploitation is supported by z/VM V5.4 and with the PTFs for APARs VM64277 and PK50120 for z/VM V5.2 and V5.3. If the PTFs are not applied, only two of the four ports will be "visible" to z/VM V5.2 and V5.3.
Enhanced connectivity with TCP/IP Layer 2 support
The Queued Direct Input/Output (QDIO) device driver of the TCP/IP stack can now operate in Layer 2 (of the Open Systems Interface (OSI) reference model) mode. The stack now deploys its own unique locally defined Media Access Control (MAC) addresses instead of sharing the OSA MAC address. It sends and receives Ethernet frames when transferring data through the OSA feature. Layer 2 support can be employed with an OSA-Express, OSA-Express2, or OSA-Express3 feature when configured in Queued Direct I/O (QDIO) mode (CHPID type OSD).
This new support allows connecting a z/VM TCP/IP stack to an IPv4 or IPv6 Layer 2 Virtual Switch (VSWITCH). You can also connect a z/VM TCP/IP stack to a Layer 2 guest LAN or connect a z/VM TCP/IP stack (via a real OSA-Express) to a physical LAN segment in Layer 2 mode. A z/VM TCP/IP stack connected to a VSWITCH operating in Layer 2 mode is now supported in Link Aggregation configurations. VSWITCH Link Aggregation is designed to provide both increased bandwidth and more continuous network connectivity.
By default, TCP/IP now automatically restarts OSD and HiperSockets™ devices without requiring operator, network, or system-programmer intervention. This can help provide faster recovery of connectivity in the system.
Enhanced ease of use in network management
The usability of managing virtual networks, including the z/VM virtual switch, has been enhanced. Specifically,
- The QUERY LAN command has a new USERID option that provides a subset of the output of the QUERY LAN DETAILS command for the specified user.
- The QUERY VSWITCH command has two new options, USERID and RDEV, that display a subset of the output of the QUERY VSWITCH DETAILS command for the specified user or device.
- The QUERY VSWITCH command response includes the status of the VLAN_COUNTERS option in force for the specified VLAN-aware VSWITCH.
- Detailed transmission counters can be turned on for a VLAN-aware VSWITCH with the SET VSWITCH command and the MODIFY VSWITCH configuration statement.
In addition, a new SNMPTRAP utility can be used to generate SNMP TRAP messages, providing unsolicited data messages that are sent by an SNMP agent to its SNMP managing system. These messages are usually used to inform the managing station about a special condition that has occurred either in an agent system or in the network.
TELNET server and client IPv6 support
The TCP/IP stack in z/VM V5.4 provides an IPv6-capable TELNET server and client. Because TELNET is written in Pascal, IPv6-capable Pascal APIs are also provided.
Security
Enhanced z/VM SSL server now CMS-based
The z/VM V5.3 Linux-based SSL server is not available with z/VM V5.4 and is being replaced with a CMS-based SSL server with the PTF for APAR PK65850. This PTF is planned to be available in December 2008. Instead of having an SSL server that requires a Linux distribution, a CMS-based SSL server may enable encryption services to be deployed more quickly and can help make installation, service, and release-to-release migration simpler. Other enhancements to the z/VM V5.4 SSL server include:
- Network-free SSL server administration
The SSL server can be managed without requiring a network connection between the SSL server administrator and the SSL server.
- New encryption and decryption engine
The SSL server uses z/OS V1.10 System SSL technology for encryption, decryption, and certificate management.
- New certificate-management services
The System SSL gskkyman utility is now used to manage the SSL server certificate database. New services available for the SSL server include certificate renewal, certificate signing, and certificate exportation with or without the private key. The gskkyman application also manages certificates for the z/VM LDAP server.
LDAP upgrade and RACF password change logging
In order to help maintain cross-platform consistency, the z/VM LDAP server introduced in z/VM V5.3 has been upgraded to the function level of the z/OS V1.10 IBM Tivoli Directory Server for z/OS. The z/VM RACF Security Server feature has been enhanced to create LDAP change log entries in response to updates to RACF group and user profiles, including changes to user passwords and password phrases. This update enables password changes made on z/VM to be more securely propagated to other systems, including z/OS, using applications such as the IBM Tivoli Directory Integrator.
Common Criteria Certification
IBM has successfully completed the activities required for the certification of z/VM V5.3 with the RACF Security Server optional feature for conformance to the Controlled Access Protection Profile (CAPP) and Labeled Security Protection Profile (LSPP) of the Common Criteria standard for IT security, ISO/IEC 15408, at Evaluation Assurance Level 4, augmented by flaw remediation procedures (EAL4+). This satisfies the statement of direction made in Software Announcement A07-0173, dated February 06, 2007.
This certified level of z/VM 5.3 is planned to be available as a no-charge offering from IBM Resource Link™ at

If you are not registered with Resource Link, you will be required to register for a user ID and password. You must also be licensed for z/VM V5.3 or V5.4, or have a previous release of z/VM V4 or V5 with a current S&S for that release, to be entitled to the certified level. After your entitlement is verified, you will receive the z/VM V5.3 3390 DDR SDO on a 3590 tape and the z/VM V5.3 RSU 2 on a 3590 tape. You will also need to request the required PTFs for APARs VM64310 and VM64365.
z/VM V5.4 has not been evaluated for conformance, but is designed to meet the same standards.
Systems management
Further systems management enhancements for Linux and other virtual images
The z/VM Virtual Systems Management Application Programming Interface (API) is provided for System z platform provisioning applications (such as IBM Director and programs developed by non-IBM solution providers) for ease of use in creating and managing large numbers of Linux and other virtual system images running on z/VM.
The multitasking-capable sockets-based servers, introduced in z/VM V5.3, have been updated to communicate among themselves via shared queues. This helps to improve the speed of request processing, enhance error recovery, and increase the scalability of the Systems Management API.
In addition to the updated servers, enhancements provided in z/VM V5.4 include:
- New APIs to:
- Grant users access to a virtual network LAN, and to determine which users have been authorized
- Add, delete, and query virtual processors in an active virtual image's configuration or directory
- Manage profile directory entries
- Accept and validate password phrases
- Query the level of the Systems Management API to determine what functions are available
- Allow a sort ordinal to be defined for local tags in directory entries
- Enhancements to existing functions:
- Allow creation and deletion of virtual network LANs to be either persistent or temporary
- Increase the length of a virtual image's local tag to 1024 characters
In z/VM V5.3, the sockets-based server replaced the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) server and CSL routines that were used to call the Virtual Systems Management API in previous releases of z/VM. The RPC server is still available in z/VM V5.4, with all of the functions that were available in z/VM V5.2. However, the enhancements provided since z/VM V5.2 are not available through the RPC server and no further enhancements are planned. Documentation on the use of the API with the RPC server and CSL routines was not updated and is not included in the V5.3 or V5.4 bookshelf. As stated previously in Software Announcement A07-0173, dated February 06, 2007, IBM intends to remove the RPC server from a future z/VM release.
Directory manager enhancements
The IBM Directory Maintenance Facility (DirMaint™) has been upgraded to a new function level (FL540) in z/VM V5.4. This new function level of DirMaint includes support for:
- End-user authentication using the end-user's password phrase, if one is defined in an external security manager (ESM)
- An end-user to use DirMaint to set a password phrase in the ESM
- Simplified DirMaint configuration, to enable the coordinated user and resource management in the RACF Security Server
Enhancements to the Performance Toolkit for VM
The Performance Toolkit for VM feature has been upgraded to a new function level (FL540) for z/VM V5.4 and has been enhanced to:
- Display an optional "Banner" page that can be customized and is presented prior to displaying the Performance Toolkit logon page that provides access to the Web interface
- Provide updated displays and reports to support new monitor data for the dynamic memory upgrade enhancement
- Enable the SYSTEM (FCX102) and PRIVOPS (FCX104) reports to be generated using monitor data, allowing them to be produced in BATCH and MONSCAN modes
Enhancements to IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON® XE on z/VM and Linux
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE on z/VM and Linux V4.1.2 (5698-A36) provides statistical information about z/VM operating system resources, such as CPU, I/O, networking, memory, and DASD, as well as workload measurements. Performance information for Linux on System z guests of z/VM is also provided for tuning these Linux workloads and assessing the impact of those workloads on z/VM. Tivoli OMEGAMON on z/VM and Linux helps you minimize the time and costs associated with managing this multifaceted computing environment and achieve your goals for high availability. OMEGAMON XE on z/VM and Linux V4.1.2 provides insight into workload performance on both z/VM and Linux on z. Performance information collected from both environments from the Performance Toolkit on VM and Tivoli OMEGAMON agents is integrated into a unified view.
V4.1.2 of the z/VM agent provide systems programmers with:
- Additional integrated monitoring of Virtual Disk (VDISK) control unit cache and DASD device cache assists in identifying bottlenecks in the I/O subsystem.
- Wait statistics due to processor spin locks help in discovering impacts due to spin locks.
IBM Tivoli OMEGAMON XE on z/VM and Linux V4.1.2 supports all currently supported z/VM releases as well as z/VM V5.4 at its availability on September 12, 2008.

Installation and service enhancements/packaging changes
Installation of Linux on System z from the HMC
Using z/VM V5.4 and the Hardware Management Console (HMC) 2.10.0 in conjunction with the Support Element (SE) 2.10.0 on the IBM System z10, z/VM can be installed in an LPAR and both z/VM and Linux on System z can be installed in a virtual machine from the HMC DVD drive. This can eliminate requiring any external network setup and a physical connection between an LPAR and the HMC, instead using the existing communication path between the HMC and the SE and thus may make configuration easier and more secure because the HMC does not have to reside on the intranet.
Note: This support is intended for customers who have no alternative, such as a LAN-based server, for serving the DVD contents for Linux installations. The elapsed time for installation using the HMC DVD drive can be an order of magnitude, or more, longer than the elapsed time for LAN-based alternatives.
This support is exclusive to z/VM V5.4 and the IBM System z10 and is an initial step toward satisfying the z/VM requirements of the statement of general direction made in Hardware Announcement A08-0208, dated February 26, 2008.
Also stated in Hardware Announcement A08-0208, dated February 26, 2008, IBM plans to provide future support for z/VM hypervisor-configuration tasks from the HMC.
Installation and service enhancements
The installation process for z/VM V5.4 has been changed to provide more information to determine the installation status, including:
- Saving consoles at the end of each installation EXEC
- Copying console files from the first-level user IDs to the installed-system's minidisks
An alternative process was added that installs a second-level z/VM image by uploading the contents of the installation DVDs to minidisk, thus allowing such an installation without the use of a server. Because this process is slower than using an FTP server, it should be used only when the FTP capability is not available.
The VMSES/E SERVICE command has been updated to accept a file containing a list of components for which to build service. The VMSES/E LOCALMOD command has been updated to accept a file listing serviceable parts that will be modified or for which the local modification will be removed.

Electronic delivery of z/VM
The z/VM base operating system is available for Internet delivery from ShopzSeries at

z/VM V5.4 Information Centre
IBM now publishes the z/VM documentation (information for the z/VM base and optional features) in an information centre using the IBM Eclipse Help System framework. Publishing in an information centre is in addition to z/VM product documentation published in BookManager® and Adobe® PDF format and available through the z/VM Collection, the z/VM Internet Library, and the IBM Publications Centre. The content of the z/VM V5.4 Information Centre is identical to that in the traditional BookManager and Adobe PDF formats; however, the presentation might differ to some degree.
Advantages of information centres are:
- Content is indexed by Google and other Internet search engines to help locate information more easily.
- Custom searches can be created that include only the information you need for a particular task or job role.
The z/VM V5.4 Information Centre is planned to be available on September 12, 2008:
IBM On-line Library: z/VM Collection on CD-ROM not distributed
The distribution of the IBM On-line Library: z/VM Collection on CD-ROM as a no-charge deliverable has been discontinued with z/VM V5.4. The IBM On-line Library: z/VM Collection continues to be distributed on DVD with each z/VM V5.4 order. Both the IBM On-line Library: z/VM Collection CD-ROM and the IBM On-line Library: z/VM Collection on DVD are available (for a fee) from the Publications Centre Web site at

Withdrawal of distribution medium
z/VM V5.4 and any product or feature orderable with the z/VM SDO will not be available on 3480 tape medium, satisfying the Statement of General Direction made in Software Announcement A07-0173, dated February 06, 2007.
Simultaneous with this withdrawal, 3490 Tape Subsystems will not be supported for installation by z/VM. z/VM continues to be distributed on 3590 and 3592 tape media, on DVDs, and via Internet delivery through ShopzSeries. Effective November 5, 2008, service on 3480 and 3490E tape media for all z/VM releases is planned to be discontinued from ShopzSeries.
Also, with this announcement, distribution of the Recommended Service Update (RSU) on CD-ROM in Optical Media Attachment/2 (OMA/2) format has been discontinued for all currently supported and future z/VM releases. SERVLINK files (virtual tape images) will continue to be delivered on the RSU CD-ROM.
Changes to the z/VM System Delivery Offering (SDO)
With the general availability of z/VM V5.4, the following changes have been made to the z/VM V5.4 SDO:
- Removing the shipment of the SDO Enabling Aid with the product order. The Enabling Aid is planned to be available by September 12, 2008 at
- http://www.ibm.com/vm/sdo/sdozvm54.html
Then click on "z/VM SDO Enabling Aid" to download the files.
- Removing Host Management Facility (HMF) V1.1 (5684-157) from the V5.4 SDO. HMF was announced to be withdrawn from marketing effective September 8, 2008, in Withdrawal Announcement A08-0652, dated June 03, 2008.
HMF is replaced by IBM Operations Manager for z/VM V1.2.0 (5697-J10), or later.
- Removing VisualAge® Generator Server for MVS™, VM, and VSE V1.2 (5648-B02) from the V5.4 SDO. VisualAge Generator Server for MVS, VM, and VSE V1.2 was withdrawn from marketing effective September 8, 2008, in Withdrawal Announcement A08-0652, dated June 03, 2008.
- Removing RSCS V3.2 (5684-096) from the V5.4 SDO. RSCS V3.2 was withdrawn from marketing effective May 26, 2008, in Withdrawal Announcement A07-2437, dated December 04, 2007.
Withdrawal of support for TCP/IP for z/VM functions
IBM is discontinuing service support for the Network Database (NDB) system, Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server, X25 interface (including the X25IPI server), and SNALINK server and interface on z/VM V5.4. This satisfies the Statement of General Direction made in Software Announcement A07-0173, dated February 06, 2007.
Application enablement
Updated C/C++ for z/VM compiler
XL C/C++ for z/VM V1.2 compiler (5654-A22) is an advanced optimizing compiler for the z/VM platform. Based on industry standards, this professional programming tool can be used for developing large, complex, computationally intensive applications.
The new XL C/C++ for z/VM V1.2 compiler includes:
- Support for the C99 programming standard
- A higher OPTIMIZE(3) or Opt(3) optimization level
- -qarch(4) and -qtune(4) compiler options to control the code being generated by the compiler
- Improved optimization with the high order transformation option and aligned keyword
C/C++ programs can be compiled and executed on CMS and creates portability between z/VM and z/OS C/C++ programs. C/C++ source files can be read from a CMS minidisk, the SFS, or the Byte File System (BFS), and output can be written to any of these file systems. C/C++ can be ordered stand-alone or through the z/VM V5.4 SDO. The XL C/C++ for z/VM compiler executes only on z/VM V5.4 and can be licensed only to operate on standard processors. Applications compiled with the C/C++ compiler can be run on standard processors (CPs) or Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) processor features. For additional information on the XL C/C++ for z/VM V1.2 compiler, refer to Software Announcement A08-1170, dated August 05, 2008.
In order to support the XL C/C++ for z/VM compiler and updated runtime libraries for C/C++, COBOL, and PL/I, the Language Environment® component has been updated to the level shipped with z/OS V1.9 and is integrated in z/VM V5.4.

Engine-based Value Unit pricing
Engine-based Value Unit pricing for z/VM V5.4 is designed to provide a decreasing price curve as hardware capacities and workload grow, which may help improve price/performance.
There may also be a price benefit when you grow your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a flat price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity (processors) on which z/VM V5 has already been installed, which may result in a lower unit price.
Note: Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.
A no-charge Subscription and Support registration record will be established for each designated machine where z/VM V5.4 and the priced, optional features of DirMaint, RSCS, RACF Security Server, and the Performance Toolkit for VM are running. These no-charge Subscription and Support registration records will be linked to the billable Subscription and Support and all billable Subscription and Support within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.
Subscription and Support is an annual charge and should be kept at an annual term.

The Information Technology industry has recognized the business value of exploiting virtualization technologies on any and all server platforms. IBM mainframe products have pioneered high levels of server virtualization technology for many years. z/VM V5.4 is the latest offering of the industry-acclaimed server-virtualization support available with IBM System z. Building on a 40-year history of innovation z/VM is becoming an ever-more-popular component of on-demand System z computing solutions.
The success of Linux on System z can be attributed in part to the business value that Linux-based solutions derive from the IBM mainframe virtualization technology provided by z/VM and IBM System z servers. z/VM technology offers clients the ability to host a large number of Linux servers on a single mainframe while also providing a highly flexible, adaptable, and efficient operational environment that is well-suited for on-demand computing.
z/VM V5.4 offers new levels of price/performance, functional capabilities, and hardware exploitation that may increase the attractiveness of deploying Linux solutions on the mainframe. Clients can add capacity to IBM mainframe servers for hosting Linux-on-z/VM workloads by configuring their servers with Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) processors.
The z/VM V5.4 pricing model may make it more feasible for clients to add z/VM virtualization technology to their standard-processor environment (compared to the pricing models of z/VM V3 and V4). This helps enable clients to use z/VM to host workloads that cannot run on IFL processors, such as z/OS, z/OS.e, VSE/ESA™, z/VSE, TPF, and z/TPF in order to consolidate existing VM/ESA® or z/VM V3 and V4 workloads onto a single larger System z server.
z/VM V5 is the follow-on product for VM/ESA, z/VM V3, and z/VM V4. z/VM V5.4 requires z/Architecture® (64-bit) for execution; therefore, it runs only on z10 EC, z9™ EC, z9 BC, z990, z890, z900, and z800 machines. z/VM V5.4 provides additional support and exploitation opportunities for many users who have built enterprise-wide automation and infrastructure enhancements on the VM platform in support of their applications, database systems, and on-demand business solutions.
z/VM V5 is intended to address the following situations:
- Running more Linux server images on a single System z server: Considerably more images than are currently supported by the LPAR mode of operation (up to 60 on z10 EC and z9 EC, up to 30 on z9 BC, z990, and z890, and up to 15 on all other zSeries® servers) may be supported with z/VM guest support. These Linux on System z server images can be deployed on standard processors (CPs) or IFL processors with z/VM V5. Running multiple Linux images on an IFL-configured z/VM system may not increase the IBM software charges of your existing System z environment. Clients running z/OS, z/VM, TPF, z/TPF, VSE/ESA, z/VSE, or Linux can add z/VM V5.4 on IFL processors to their environments without increasing IBM software costs on the standard processors (CPs).
- Moving selected Linux, Windows®, and UNIX® workloads to a single System z server: Moving workloads while maintaining distinct server images and current LAN topology can help reduce systems-management complexity. By managing large server farms deployed on virtual servers instead of using multiple hardware servers, the number of real hardware servers and associated physical LANs may be reduced, which may lead to cost savings. Deploying Linux workloads on z/VM V5.4 may be particularly attractive if they interact with applications or data located on the same System z server.
- Enhancing virtual networking:z/VM virtual switch support provides external connectivity for guest LANs through an OSA-Express adapter without requiring a VM or Linux router virtual machine, which may increase the efficiency and reliability of network communication.
- Consolidating operating systems on the System z platform:z/VM V5.4 offers extensive scalability support for CPUs, memory, I/O, and networking, making it easier to consolidate workloads on a single z/VM image. This support is provided for both ESA/390 and z/Architecture guest operating systems such as Linux for System z, TPF, z/TPF, z/OS, VSE/ESA, and z/VSE.
- Migrating from VM/ESA to z/VM V5.4: This helps enable:
- More memory to provide cache for CMS minidisks by exploiting memory above the first 2 GB for minidisk cache
- Connectivity (TCP/IP) enhancements and additional device support
- Added security capabilities with SSL-protected TCP/IP network traffic, such as Telnet sessions and Web transactions
- Extensive virtual networking support
- Migrating to newer releases of z/OS: This may provide added flexibility for migration and testing, as well as for production.
- Enhancing guest Parallel Sysplex support: The exploitation of z/Architecture may enable addressability to larger amounts of real and virtual memory, allowing the development and testing of 64-bit Parallel Sysplex applications in a guest environment.

- TCP/IP functions:IBM intends to withdraw support in a future z/VM release for the Kerberos Authentication System.
- MMC (Mainframe to Micro Channel®) card:IBM intends to withdraw support in a future z/VM release for the MMC card, which enabled communication between the PS/2 (PWSCS) and VM (PWSCF or ISFC).
- z/VM FlashCopy® enhancements:IBM intends to enhance z/VM FlashCopy capabilities to support the FlashCopy SE function of the IBM DS8000™ with the PTF for APAR VM64449 in fourth quarter 2008. FlashCopy SE offers a space-efficient snapshot capability that reduces the storage capacity needed for point-in-time copies. This function is especially useful for short-lived testing or backups, such as flash to intermediate volume for backup to tape.

Software requirements
Prerequisite requirements
- EREP VM (5654-260) V3.5.0.
- The PTFs for APARs VM63743, VM63624, VM63946, and VM64367 have been applied to the z/VM V5.4 system DDRs.
- The PTF for APAR VM63743 provides the necessary function to support the z9 EC.
- The PTF for APAR VM63624 provides the necessary function to support the DS6000™ and DS8000.
- The PTF for APAR VM63946 provides the necessary function to support the z9 BC.
- The PTF for APAR VM64367 is required for EREP to support the System z10.
- Device Support Facilities - ICKDSF VM (5684-042) V1.17.0. Any fixes requested for ICKDSF should specify the PTF number of the VMSES/E formatted update. VMSES/E installable PTFs have the release number G14. 'G' indicates Release 17 of ICKDSF and '14' indicates VMSES/E format. The following PTFs have been applied to the z/VM V5.4 system DDRs:
- The PTF for APAR PQ84848 provides the necessary function for ICKDSF to support large FBA devices.
- The PTFs for APARs PQ96706 and PQ95319 provide the necessary function for ICKDSF to support the DS8000 and DS6000 storage devices, respectively.
The prerequisite no-charge products, EREP and ICKDSF, are pre-installed on the base product system DDRs.
When ordering z/VM V5.4, you must already be licensed for these products (5654-260 and 5684-042) or a separate order must be placed for each of these products to establish a license.

- ISPF V3.2.0 (5684-043) or a subsequent release for DFSMS/VM usage. ISPF is not required if you are using only the 3495 Tape Library Dataserver support of DFSMS™.
- DirMaint Facility optional feature of z/VM V5.4 if the minidisk management function is needed.
- RACF Security Server for z/VM optional feature of z/VM V5.4 or its equivalent if a security product is needed for authorization.
- Tivoli Storage Manager Extended Edition for z/OS and z/VM V5.2 (5698-A11), Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS and z/VM V5.2 (5698-A13), or Tivoli Storage Manager for VM (5697-TS9) and Language Environment component supplied with z/VM if Migration Level 2 (ML2) function of DFSMS/VM is used.

- IBM Compiler for REXX/370 (5695-013) and IBM Library for REXX/370 (5695-014), if the compiled REXX installation-wide exit or a compiled ACS REXX exit is desired.
- The PTF for APAR VM63746 allows DFSMS/VM RMS on z/VM V5.1, and later to share tape drive devices using the multi-access tape feature of the CP ATTACH command. This allows, for example, z/VM 3590 install media to be inserted, and z/VM 5.4 to be installed from, an Automated Tape Library (ATL).
The PTF for APAR VM64062 supports locating encryption-capable 3592 tape drives in an Enterprise Automated Tape Library. The DFSMS/VM support provides tape-encryption capabilities for a z/VSE guest running on z/VM.
- Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD) and Hardware Configuration Manager (HCM) requirements
- The required support for the System z10 has been applied to the new function level of HCD/HCM supplied with z/VM V5.4.
- IBM High Level Assembler (5696-234) requirements
- High Level Assembler V1.5.0, or later, is required to:
- Create a new DMSTRT for system languages (NLS)
- Create image libraries for system printers (FCBs)
- Create GCS application segments (CONTENTS macro)
- Access major CMS application interfaces (CMSCALL)
- Access most CP application interfaces (DIAGNOSE)
- Use the AVS tuning control module (AGWTUN)
- Use RAS tools (such as MDCHECK, FS2SFSER, AFTCHAIN, PRINTBLK, and PRINTFST)
- Use the API for data compression
- Use the CMS Pipelines Assemble macros interface
- Assemble exit routines for DirMaint and RSCS
- Customize Language Environment or compile assembler routines used in mixed-language user applications
- Assemble applications that exploit the IEEE Floating Point hardware facility
- Add devices that cannot be sensed (updating HCPRIO ASSEMBLE)

- The PTF for APAR PK58463 is required for High Level Assembler V1.5 to support the new instructions provided with the System z10 server.
- The High Level Assembler V1.6 contains the support for the System z10 instruction set and was made available on July 11, 2008. For additional information on the High Level Assembler V1.6, refer to Software Announcement A08-0741, dated June 24, 2008.

- Language Environment
- Requires High Level Assembler V1.5.0, or later to customize Language Environment options
- On-line displayable publications requirements
- BookManager files can be read by either BookManager READ for VM (a separately orderable product) or IBM Softcopy Reader (supplied on the CD-ROM and DVD). APAR GC05366 for BookManager/VM READ is required for READ/VM V1.3 Public Library to run in a non-370 mode. BookManager products also have prerequisite product requirements. Specific details are available in the BookManager announcement documentation.
- POSIX requirements
- Developing POSIX applications requires C/C++ for z/VM V1.1 or XL C/C++ for z/VM V1.2 (5654-A22).
- RSCS FL530 requirements
- To communicate with users in an SNA network requires ACF/VTAM for VM/ESA, V4.2 (5654-010).
- To communicate within an IP network requires TCP/IP for z/VM FL540.
- Group Control Subsystem (GCS) must be configured and activated.
- Shared-DASD Complex and CSE Cluster Program requirements
In a shared-DASD complex, a single Directory Maintenance Facility (DirMaint) server with a single source directory can manage the object directory on up to 16 z/VM systems, if the DirMaint executable code disks and source directory disk are shared among all the systems. The following are required to support the shared-DASD complex:
- DirMaint, Function Level 540 (FL540)
Within the shared-DASD complex, all z/VM systems must be running the same DirMaint FL540 service level. Therefore, you must be licensed for the DirMaint FL540 feature on any z/VM V5.4 system in the complex.
A CSE cluster consists of two, three, or four z/VM systems. The following are required to support the CSE function:
- The same DirMaint requirements as for the shared-DASD complex described above.
- For shared spool and cross-system messaging:
- VM/Pass-Through Facility, V2.1.1, or later (5684-100)
OSA and Open Systems Adapter/Support Facility (OSA/SF) program requirements
OSA/SF 4.4.0 is provided with and supported on z/VM and can be accessed by a CMS user ID, a REXX EXEC, or a Java-based Graphical User Interface (GUI). The GUI needs access to the Java 1.4 runtime and help on the workstation.
Access at the OSA/SF GUI requires the following communications protocols:
- For TCP/IP communication:
- TCP/IP for z/VM on the host
- TCP/IP on the workstation
To support an OSA in TCP/IP Passthru mode in a z/VM V5.4 environment, OSA/SF requires TCP/IP for z/VM V5.4. OSA/SF support is required in this mode only if access to one of the OSA's ports is being shared by more than one host program or if an ATM OSA-2 is being used as a LAN Emulation Client (LEC).
The following PTFs have been applied to the z/VM V5.4 system DDRs:
- The PTF for APAR OA15170 provides the necessary function to display information for OSN features on the z10, z9 EC, and z9 BC and support for Layer 2.
- The PTF for APAR OA23824 is required for OSA/SF to support the OSA-Express3 enhancements on the System z10.
For additional information of OSA/SF, refer to Hardware Announcement A03-0620, dated May 13, 2003.
TCP/IP for z/VM V5.4 program requirements
TCP/IP for z/VM V5.4 has the following additional program requirements:
- If a primary or secondary domain name server (not a caching-only name server) or the network database server is to be run:
- IBM DB2 Server for VSE & VM V7.1 (5697-F42), or later
- If programs are developed in C:
- IBM C for VM/ESA V3.1 (5654-033), C/C++ for z/VM V1.1 or XL C/C++ for z/VM V1.2 (5654-A22)
- If programs are developed in Pascal:
- IBM VS Pascal V1.2 (5668-767) Compiler and Library
Linux program requirements
Linux for System z is not provided with z/VM V5. In order to operate Linux as a guest of z/VM, Linux must be obtained from a Linux distributor partner.

Limitations
- z/VM V5 will operate only on hardware servers that support z/Architecture (64-bit), including z10, z9 EC, z9 BC, z990, z890, z900, and z800.
- Linux and OpenSolaris are the only guest operating systems z/VM will support on IFL processors (other than z/VM V4 or z/VM V5 themselves).
- Use of IFL processors on z800 and z900 servers requires LPAR mode. Customers who choose to add IFL processors to a z800 or z900 server running in basic mode will also have to change to run the server in LPAR mode to make use of the IFL processors. This is not a consideration for z10, z9 EC, z9 BC, z990, and z890 servers, which do not have basic mode.
- z/VM V5 does not provide support for V=R or V=F guest, even on servers that provide basic mode. Customers using basic mode to run V=R and V=F guests should consider this when migrating to z/VM V5. The increase in processor requirements to run a V=V guest that was previously run as V=R may be significant due to the loss of various hardware assists.
Performance considerations
System performance depends on the hardware resources allocated to z/VM V5.4 and on the level of activity within each Linux image. The results of the performance evaluation of z/VM V5.4 is planned to be available on September 19, 2008 in the z/VMPerformance Report on the z/VM Web site at

z/VM V5.4 Subscription and Support (S&S)
To order z/VM V5.4, you must use the SDO, program number 5741-A06. The z/VM base system, any ordered optional z/VM features, and any ordered SDO licensed products will be delivered as part of the z/VM SDO.
If you desire the level of service provided under the IBM ICA license agreement with S/390® and z/VM licensed products, you are strongly encouraged to order the program number for z/VM S&S (5741-SNS). This program number provides enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours) and access to updates, releases, and versions of the program for as long as support is in effect. z/VM S&S will be automatically added to your order. If you do not desire the S&S license for z/VM and/or the optional features of DirMaint, RSCS, RACF Security Server, or the Performance Toolkit for VM, you must take specific action to decline this support.
To host Linux guests of z/VM V5, you must also obtain a Linux for System z distribution. Information on those Linux distributor partners that have a marketing relationship with IBM can be found at

Running 370-mode applications
To simplify the migration of older applications and facilitate the running of 370-mode-only CMS applications in XA-, ESA-, or XC-mode virtual machines, IBM provides the 370 Accommodation function. This function originally shipped with VM/ESA V1.2.1 (available July 1993) and has since been enhanced as the result of customer experience and input. 370 Accommodation handles the vast majority of inconsistencies between 370 mode and XA, ESA, or XC mode, eliminating the need to change these applications to exploit the new architectures.
z/VM V5 supports only XA-, ESA-, and XC-mode virtual machines. z/VM V5 does not support 370-mode virtual machines. 370-mode virtual machines are converted to XA mode during logon processing. The 370 Accommodation function is still supported for applications. If you find your applications cannot run under the current level of CMS, you should use the 370 Accommodation function or modify your applications, if possible. If problems persist, call IBM Service for assistance.

The products and features in this announcement have one pricing metric - Value Units based on the number of processors. Value Unit pricing with a decreasing one-time charge (OTC) price per engine, subject to the tiers as documented in Value Unit Exhibit VUE021, is available for z/VM V5 for the optional features of DirMaint, RSCS, RACF, and the Performance Toolkit for VM, and for S&S entitlements at initial order of z/VM V5 or its features. Value Unit pricing for z/VM V5 provides a lower price per processor as more Value Units are licensed with z/VM V5. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors running z/VM V5 across the enterprise to achieve a more economical price. There may also be a price benefit when you increase your capacity. Additional capacity is not priced starting at the base with a flat price per unit. Instead, additional capacity is priced starting at the capacity on which z/VM V5 has already been installed, which may result in a lower unit price.
Translation from Processor to Value Units
The total number of engine-based Value Units is calculated according to the following example.
If the customer has installed six processors and will be operating z/VM V5 on all six processors, the applicable Value Units would be: (3 * 10) + (3 * 9) = 57 Value Units.

Performance Toolkit for VM
The Performance Toolkit for VM feature provides a variety of reports on system performance to help manage your performance more efficiently.
The Performance Toolkit for VM feature is considered to be a program update for the RealTime Monitor (RTM) and/or the Performance Reporting Facility (PRF) features of z/VM V4 as defined in the IBM International Agreement for Acquisition of Support, Z125-6011. Therefore, any existing z/VM V4 customer who has purchased a Subscription & Support (S&S) license for the RTM or PRF feature is entitled to receive a no-charge upgrade for the Performance Toolkit for VM feature when ordering z/VM V5.4.
IBM strongly encourages customers to order S&S for the Performance Toolkit for VM feature. S&S provides an easy and effective way for customers to access, during the coverage period, eligible new versions and releases of the Performance Toolkit for VM feature. S&S also provides the same level of support that was available when customers paid a monthly license charge for products with the IBM Customer Agreement software license.
High Level Assembler (5696-234)
The High Level Assembler (5696-234) or an equivalent product is required for z/VM to:
- Apply corrective service to the RACF Security Server for z/VM associated CP parts
- Change exit routines or perform local modifications for any IBM VM product or vendor product
The High Level Assembler is available for use with Linux on System z on IFL processors as a Programming Request for Price Quote (PRPQ). A PRPQ must be submitted for to purchase the High Level Assembler for Linux on System z (5799-TCQ) and for its annual Subscription & Support (5799-TCR).
Processor
A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor core consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. With full capacity licensing, a Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be acquired for all activated processor cores available for use on the server.

Ordering z/VM V5.4 using the SDO
Orders for z/VM V5.4 will be accepted beginning September 9, 2008. When placing an order, if you wish to have that order fulfilled with z/VM V5.4, you will need to specify a customer requested arrival date (CRAD) of September 12, 2008, or later. Production of z/VM V5.4 orders is planned to begin on September 12, 2008.
Orders for z/VM V5.4 and the optional features must use the z/VM V5.4 SDO packaged offering, program number 5741-A06. The z/VM base system, any ordered optional z/VM features, and any ordered SDO licensed products will be delivered as part of the z/VM SDO.
You must specify the disk type to which you will install and the desired distribution medium.
With the ordering of z/VM V5.4, you will receive a system DDR tape or DVD containing the program code for z/VM V5.4, an IPLA for 5741-A05, a LID, program directories, and one copy of each publication available for z/VM V5.4 as listed in the Packaging section of this announcement.

- Example 1 - You currently do not have z/VM V5 licensed on any processors on any System z10, z9, or zSeries server within your enterprise. Your engine-based Value Unit for licensing (5741-A05) is 0.
If you will be licensing z/VM V5 and designating two IFL processors on a single System z10, z9, or zSeries server within your enterprise as running z/VM V5, you will specify the disk type to which you will install and the desired distribution medium. When licensing using 5741-A05, capacity to be specified in engine-based Value Units would be (2 * 10) or 20 resulting in a total of 20 Value Units.
- Example 2 - You currently are not running z/VM V5 on standard processors (CPs) but you are running z/VM V5 on one IFL processor (probably running Linux on System z) on a single System z10, z9, or zSeries server within your enterprise. Your engine-based Value Unit for licensing (5741-A05) is 10.
If you will be licensing z/VM V5 and designating two additional IFL processors on a single System z10, z9, or zSeries server within your enterprise as running z/VM V5, you will specify the disk type to which you will install and the desired distribution medium. When licensing using 5741-A05, additional capacity to be specified in engine-based Value Units would be (2 * 10) or 20 resulting in a total of 30 Value Units.
- Example 3 - You currently are running z/VM V5 on two standard processors (CPs) on a single System z10, z9, or zSeries server within your enterprise. Your engine-based Value Unit for 5741-A05 is 20.
If you will be licensing z/VM V5 and designating two additional standard processors (CPs) on a single System z10, z9, or zSeries server within your enterprise as running z/VM V5, you will specify the disk type to which you will install and the desired distribution medium. Program Number: 5741-SNS
Support for z/VM V5 is provided and licensed under the IBM International Agreement for Acquisition of Support (Z125-6011).
This 5741-SNS order establishes entitlement records as well as support for z/VM V5.4 or the optional features. If an 5741-SNS order is declined, you will only be entitled to support under the basic warranty for z/VM V5.4 (5741-A05).
z/VM has adopted the support lifecycle extensions as announced in Software Announcement A03-0773, dated August 12, 2003, which provide for 3 years of technical support after general availability. Therefore:
- Central service for z/VM V5.4 (5741-A05) is planned to be available by IBM until September 30, 2011.
- Central service for z/VM V5.3 (5741-A05) is planned to be available by IBM until September 30, 2010.
- Central service for z/VM V5.2 (5741-A05) is planned to be available by IBM until April 30, 2009.
The z/VM S&S provides:
- Corrections that fix substantial deviations of unmodified products from the then-current code, publications, and informal documentation (that is, release notes and memos).
- Software product updates that are improvements, extensions, and other changes IBM, at its discretion, deems to be reasonable.
- Recommended Service Updates (RSUs), new versions, and new releases at no additional charge.
- Technical support:
- A reasonable amount of remote assistance via telephone, mail, facsimile (fax), or e-mail to address suspected IBM program defects, where available, during normal IBM business hours from Monday through Friday, except local holidays. Exceptions from normal IBM business hours are Severity 1 (high impact) problems. Support for high impact suspected IBM defects is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Temporary fixes for problems (where known), where they exist.
On-site (local) support, although available, is provided as part of the IBM portfolio of fee-based services.
z/VM S&S annual support charges, based on the number of Value Units specified, will be automatically added to your order. If you do not desire the S&S license for z/VM and/or the optional features of DirMaint, RSCS, RACF, or the Performance Toolkit for VM, you must take specific action to decline this support.
A no-charge S&S registration record will be established on each designated machine where z/VM V5 and the priced, optional features of DirMaint, RSCS, RACF, and the Performance Toolkit for VM are running. These no-charge S&S registration records will be linked to the billable S&S and all billable S&S within the scope of the engine-based Value Units aggregation will be linked together.
Within the scope of an enterprise aggregation, the number of Value Units ordered for the S&S license(s) must equal the number of Value Units ordered for the OTC license(s).
The quantity ordered cannot exceed the maximum number of processors per server. The number of processors for a single server to be used to calculate Value Units should not be more than:

National Language Translation
When you order z/VM V5.4, the National Language Translation files for message repositories, help files, and other panels or files are included with the system.
The following components or features are supported by z/VM V5.4 in the following languages:
- German - CP, CMS (including CMS Utilities), REXX
- Japanese Kanji - CP, CMS (including CMS Utilities), REXX, PIPES
The DirMaint feature provides National Language Translation for DirMaint messages in Kanji and is automatically included with this feature.
To receive the translated help files for DFSMS/VM in Kanji, you must order the no-charge optional DFSMS/VM feature using the z/VM V5 System Delivery Option (SDO).

Pre-installed products and features
- EREP and ICKDSF
The prerequisite no-charge products EREP (5654-260) and ICKDSF (5684-042) are pre-installed on the base product system DDRs. If you intend to use EREP or ICKDSF now or at a later date, you must establish a license for billing and shipment of publications by placing an order for each of these products. Because the product code is already pre-installed, your order should indicate that shipment of media should be suppressed for these products. This can be accomplished by including the Delivery Option feature number 3471 (Ship Documentation Only) which designates the shipment of:
- Language Environment
Language Environment is integrated into the base of z/VM V5.4.
- HCD and HCM
HCD and HCM provides a comprehensive I/O configuration management environment, similar to that available with the z/OS operating system. HCD and HCM is delivered pre-installed into the base of z/VM V5.4, enabled for use, and is available at no additional charge.
- OpenExtensions Shell and Utilities
OpenExtensions Shell and Utilities is included in z/VM V5.4 with no licensing or billing requirements.
- CMS Utilities
CMS Utilities is included in z/VM V5.4 at no additional charge.
- Open Systems Adapter Support Facility (OSA/SF)
OSA/SF (V4.4.0) is a host-based tool supporting OSA-2 and OSA-Express features and is included in z/VM V5.4 later, with no licensing or billing requirements.
- TCP/IP for z/VM and NFS
The TCP/IP base and the Network File System (NFS) feature of TCP/IP are delivered pre-installed, enabled for use, and are available at no additional charge.
- RSCS Feature
RSCS V3.2.0 (5684-096), was repackaged in z/VM V5.3 and is now available for licensing under International Program License Agreement (IPLA) terms and conditions. RSCS Function Level 540 (FL540) is available as a priced, optional feature. Pricing is based on engine-based Value Units, and can be licensed on IFL and standard processor processors. RSCS FL540 is pre-installed with z/VM V5.4, in a disabled state. If you intend to use RSCS for more than operating network-attached printers now or at a later date, you must establish a license for billing and shipment of publications. A license is established for RSCS FL540 by placing an order for the feature. Because the product code is already pre-installed, you will not receive any additional code.
- DirMaint, RACF Security Server, and the Performance Toolkit for VM priced optional features for z/VM V5.4
DirMaint, RACF Security Server, and the Performance Toolkit for VM are pre-installed in a disabled state. If you intend to use any one of these features, now or at a later date, you must establish a license for billing and shipment of publications. Enablement instructions are provided in the program directory for each feature to enable the feature for use on your system. A license is established by placing an order for the feature.
On/Off CoD
z/VM V5.4 is eligible for On/Off CoD with a temporary use charge calculated based on processor-per-day usage.

Licensing
IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.
Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
The following agreement applies for maintenance and does not require customer signatures:

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. - z/VM V5.4 supports z10, z9 EC, z9 BC, z990, z900, z890, and z800. For information about specific z/VM machine requirements and programming requirements, refer to the z/VM: General Information, GC24-6095.
- Your entitlement is for only the quantity of engine-based Value Units licensed. These engine-based Value Units can be for either standard or IFL processors.
- z/VM may run on IFL processors only if, on the IFL processors, z/VM is being used exclusively to run (1) Linux or OpenSolaris workloads and, (2) if required, z/VM applications in support of those Linux or OpenSolaris workloads.
- When ordering z/VM V5.4 to operate on any of the standard processors (CPs), you must order Value Units equal to the number of Value Units for the total number of standard processors (CPs) on your server.
- For a single server in an enterprise, the number of Value Units ordered for any optional feature to operate on standard processors must be equal to the number of Value Units ordered for the base z/VM V5 product operating on standard processors.
- When ordering z/VM V5.4 to operate on IFL processors for a single server within the enterprise, you must specify Value Units equal to the Value Units to cover the number of IFL processors on your server.
- For a single server in an enterprise, the number of Value Units ordered for any optional feature to operate on IFL processors must be equal to the number of Value Units ordered for the base z/VM V5 product operating on IFL processors.
- If you are running z/VM V5.4 on a System z10 server in an LPAR specified as "z/VM-mode" which is configured with both IFL processors and standard processors (CPs) and you intend to run software licensed under the IBM Customer Agreement (ICA) in a virtual machine in that LPAR, that virtual machine must be configured to execute only on standard processors (CPs).
- The program requires hardware that implements the IBM 64-bit z/Architecture in order to execute properly and therefore you are not authorized to install or use this program on any machine that does not properly implement 64-bit z/Architecture. For information about specific z/VM machine requirements and programming requirements, see the z/VM: General Information manual, GC24-6095.
- You may only transfer the program to another party in connection with your transfer of the machine on which you are entitled to operate the program (referred to as a "Limited Transfer"), provided that any such Limited Transfer of the program requires you to transfer your rights and obligations under the Agreement to the transferee and therefore terminates your authorization to continue to use the program. When the machine and the program are transferred, you must either provide a printed copy of the Agreement or, if electronic licensing is used for the program, take the necessary actions that will require electronic acceptance of the Agreement by the transferee prior to the transferee's first use of the program.

It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
