System Storage SAN Volume Controller Software in version 4.3.0 further extends its dynamic and
high availability storage management capabilities with the introduction of space-efficient VDisks
and VDisk mirroring functions.
Space-efficient VDisks add the capability to define virtual disk capacity that is separate from the
physical disk capacity, and use only the physical disk capacity required to store the data.
VDisk mirroring offers a significant improvement for high availability SAN Volume Controller (SVC)
configurations by providing the capability to have a VDisk supported by two sets of physical managed
disks (MDisks) in different managed disk groups on different storage controllers.
SVC copy services are further enhanced by allowing FlashCopy® to be used with the new
space-efficient VDisks to yield a space-efficient FlashCopy capability, which combines with the
support for up to 256 FlashCopy targets to enable more frequent FlashCopy while improving physical
disk usage.
This release of SAN Volume Controller software also provides enhanced network security by offering
Internet Protocol V6 (IPv6) support, further demonstrating IBM's focus on industry standards.
Additionally, with this announcement, the terms of use for the SAN Volume Controller FlashCopy
function are changed to only require capacity authorizations for FlashCopy sources, not for both
sources and targets as previously required. This change extends to all forms of SVC FlashCopy
function use, allowing broader application of this function for the same or less charge. Refer to
the
Ordering information
and
Description
sections.
SVC scalability is enhanced with the expansion to 2,048 VDisks per I/O group capability. This
provides up to 8,192 VDisks for a full eight-node SVC cluster.
SVC interoperability now includes more 64-bit platforms and more clustered environments, including
Windows® Server 2008 and HP-UX 11iV3.

Source-only FlashCopy pricing
Effective May 13, 2008, when ordering FlashCopy features, only the total site capacities for the
FlashCopy
sources
, versus both source and all targets as previously required, need to be licensed for configurations
of the FlashCopy function, including Incremental FlashCopy, Multiple Target FlashCopy, and Cascaded
FlashCopy. This statement includes the FlashCopy employed in space-efficient FlashCopy
configurations introduced by this announcement. Customers with current, active FlashCopy
authorizations can benefit directly, as their current total FlashCopy target capacity authorizations
can be counted into the existing total of source capacity authorizations. In addition to the
increase in available source capacity authorization this provides at no extra charge, current
customers with Multiple Target FlashCopy may therefore also increase the number of FlashCopy targets
without further additional target authorizations.
Benefits in this regard vary with the proportion of each type of FlashCopy relationship in use, due
to the distribution of source and target authorizations indicated in the table below.
FlashCopy source-only requirement benefits
A = Source copy
B, C = Target copies
In these examples, copies A, B, and C are all
the same virtual capacity.
Authorization Authorization
required required
before after Authorization
Example Case 5/13/2008 5/13/2008 benefit scope
A>B A + B A only Double
Single source, (100% more)
Single target
A->B and A->C A + B + C A only Triple
(multi-target) (200% more)
A->B->C A + B + C A + B 50% more
(cascaded)
The above selected examples are indicative only and do not address all extensions of Multiple Target
or Cascaded FlashCopy use, nor the use of VDisks as FlashCopy sources or targets, where related
directory spaces and allocations may further affect these example ratios.
SAN Volume Controller space-efficient VDisks
IBM's release V4.3 for SAN Volume Controller software offers space-efficient VDisks. (This is also
known as thin provisioning or over-allocation.) You can create VDisks that have virtual capacities,
visible to the host system larger than the physical capacity available, with the ability to change
both capacities dynamically. Monitoring and controlling the virtual capacity apart from the
physical capacity gives greater flexibility to host applications by providing the administrator the
capability to allocate virtual space for application future needs, while also allocating physical
capacity based only on today's requirement.
VDisk mirroring
VDisk mirroring provides a significant enhancement for highly available SVC storage configurations.
It allows users to create a VDisk supported by two different managed disk groups (MDGs) on different
storage controllers. This helps keep the VDisk available to applications in the event that either
one of the MDGs goes offline.
Space-efficient FlashCopy
Space-efficient FlashCopy is now available by using space-efficient VDisks in the FlashCopy
relationship. There is great flexibility with space-efficient FlashCopy: Space-efficient VDisks can
be intermixed with fully allocated VDisks as sources and targets, and Cascaded FlashCopy and
Multiple Target FlashCopy also support space-efficient VDisks.
The benefit of space-efficient VDisks can be further exploited as IBM now notably expands the SVC
FlashCopy usability with the increase of the number of targets to 256. These FlashCopy targets can
be standard or space-efficient VDisks, and the FlashCopy operations can be set up as incremental or
full copy operations.
Extended scalability
Scalability is improved with an increase to 2,048 VDisks per I/O group. This doubles the number of
VDisks previously allowed and opens up greater flexibility to configure more LUNs across more hosts
in the SAN.
Added interoperability
IBM SAN Volume Controller now supports many more customer heterogeneous data center environments
with the addition of interoperability support for:
-
Microsoft® Windows 2008, including Enterprise x64 Edition, SAN Boot, 32-bit support, and
clustering
-
Microsoft Windows 2008, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems, including SAN Boot
-
Hewlett-Packard HP-UX 11i V3 for PARISC (and Itanium) systems, clustering with HP ServiceGuard
-
Apple Mac OS X Server 10.5.x with ATTO Celerity 4Gb
-
Pillar Axiom models 300 and 500
New Console package
The SAN Volume Controller Console will be replaced in this release by the IBM 2805-MC2 System
Storage Productivity Center, on which the SAN Volume Controller Console software will reside.
Existing SAN Volume Controller installations with established consoles that have sufficient capacity
may upgrade these via download from the SVC Support Web site to support current clusters that are
migrated to V4.3.
Enhancements to CLI
The command-line interface (CLI) introduces some new functions for retrieving license information
for the SAN Volume Controller as follows:
-
The chlicense command -flash parameter has been updated to allow users to specify the licensed
FlashCopy capacity for the cluster, in terabytes.
-
The chlicense command -remote parameter has been updated to allow users to specify the licensed
RemoteCopy capacity for the cluster, in terabytes.
-
The chlicense command -virtualization parameter replaces the -size parameter and allows users to
specify the licensed Managed Disk capacity for the cluster, in terabytes.
-
The lslicense command has been updated to list the capacities used for the FlashCopy, RemoteCopy,
and Virtual Disk features, in terabytes.
When any of the managed capacity utilizations reach 90% capacity, attempts to create or extend
virtual disks, relationships, or mappings return a warning that the feature use is approaching 100%
capacity. While users who exceed the currently licensed capacities are not prevented from
performing any functions, a warning message is logged asking users to upgrade the license in
accordance with actual use and the user agreement.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on
accessibility compliance can be requested at
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Software V4 is capable, as of June 23, 2006, when used in
accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section
508 of the Rehabilitation Act provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly
interoperates with it.
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Software V4 is designed to help address the complexities
and costs of managing SAN-based storage. It is designed so that it can be added to existing SANs
and deliver its benefits to an increasingly broad customer environment. Global mirroring can
increase customer value by expanding the disaster recovery capabilities of the SAN Volume
Controller. The copy services enhancements included in Version 4.2 further increase customer value
by providing more flexibility to customers in managing their environments.
The new space-efficient functions being introduced with Version 4.3 are designed to increase the
ability of SVC to improve storage utilization and help enable customers to make better use of their
storage. VDisk mirroring, also introduced with Version 4.3, is designed to help protect against
failure of disk systems or disk arrays.

section.
Also, attaching IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server, IBM TotalStorage or System Storage
DS6000, or IBM TotalStorage or System Storage DS8000 series storage systems in conjunction
with the SVC Solution requires consideration of individual establishment needs. This configuration
can create a Logical Unit that is larger than a single RAID rank and also allows pooling of unused
space into Logical Units within the SAN made visible through SAN Volume Controller Software. These
are very positive potential advantages for storage efficiency and consolidated management; however,
this configuration would also require that advanced copy services be performed through the SAN
Volume Controller Software. In some cases, this may not be advantageous over performing these
services at the ESS, DS6000, or DS8000 disk array level. Relative merits and trade-offs of
attaching ESS, DS6000, or DS8000 under the SAN Volume Controller should be discussed with your IBM
Consulting Services representative or Storage Services representative.

Software-only Master Console is replaced by the System Storage
Productivity Center as the strategic and required console for new SAN
Volume Controller installations.
A separate order for the System Storage Productivity Center, 2805-MC2, is
required with new SVC orders, unless a previously installed SVC master
console or SSPC is able to support the new SVC installation. For SSPC
operation capacity recommendations, refer to the SSPC announcements
listed in the
Reference information
section. New Passport Advantage customers must order the System Storage Productivity Center
2805-MC2 via AAS.
AAS media feature 5809 (under product PID 5639-VC4) for the Software-only Master Console will be
withdrawn from ordering availability, effective August 15, 2008. SAN Volume Controller Console
upgrades are available via download from the SVC Support Web site to enable support of upgraded SVC
installations on SVC V4.3 with current master console installations.
Note:
Effective May 13, 2008, when ordering FlashCopy features, only the total site capacities for the
FlashCopy
sources
(versus both source and all targets as previously required) need be licensed for configurations of
FlashCopy, including Multiple Target FlashCopy and space-efficient FlashCopy. Previously, both
source and target capacities were required to be licensed. Customers with current FlashCopy
authorizations will potentially benefit from this licensing policy change, as their current total
FlashCopy capacity authorizations now apply to source capacity only. In addition to the increase in
available source capacity authorization this change provides at no extra charge, current customers
using FlashCopy may therefore also increase the number of FlashCopy targets without further
additional FlashCopy capacity authorizations.
Orders for Metro/Global Mirror features continue to require license authorizations for both total
source and total target capacities that are used for this function.
For Passport Advantage ordering information on this product, consult your authorized IBM Business

FlashCopy authorizations for all FlashCopy functions, including Multiple
Target FlashCopy function announced in Version 4.2 and supported in
Version 4.3, are ordered using the FlashCopy authorization features
announced in the original Version 4.1 announcement.
For SVC V4 order features announced prior to this announcement and
associated (V4.1) ordering information, refer to Software Announcement
206-121
, dated May 23, 2006.
Subsequent functional content for SVC V4.2.0 and V4.2.1 may be found in

section; however, this announcement supersedes all prior Version 4 announcements regarding purchase
requirements for FlashCopy function authorizations, including all extended FlashCopy functions.
New SAN Volume Controller orders are shipped preloaded on new orders for the corequisite hardware.
For new site SAN Volume Controller Software V4 orders made via AAS, first order the cluster 2145-8G4
hardware for the initial cluster, then order the SAN Volume Controller Software 5639-VC4 site
software license.
Order the corresponding Software Maintenance features in the appropriate quantities to match the
ordered capacity of product features.
Earlier SAN Volume Controller software releases will remain available to customers with current
Software Maintenance, on the SAN Volume Controller support Web site
Software Maintenance
Order Software Maintenance Registration for all new SAN Volume Controller
V4.3 product orders, for the same function capacities as in the new
product order.
Note:
New FlashCopy Software Maintenance order rule: When ordering FlashCopy
Software Maintenance features, only the total site capacities for the
FlashCopy sources (versus for both source and all targets as previously
announced) need be ordered for configurations of FlashCopy and Multiple
Target FlashCopy. This announcement supersedes and replaces prior
announcements regarding FlashCopy authorization requirements. FlashCopy
Software Maintenance entitlement authorizations purchased prior to May
13, 2008, to satisfy FlashCopy target capacity requirements will remain
valid for use as FlashCopy source capacity authorizations until their
(one-year or three-year) purchase renewal anniversary.
Consistent with the above statements, after May 13, 2008, renewals for
existing FlashCopy capacity authorizations should be made only for
FlashCopy source capacity.
No new Software Maintenance features are added by this announcement.
Software Maintenance (Subscription and Support) for the new
space-efficient VDisk function included in the base code is included with
Software Maintenance authorizations for SVC Base Virtualization.
Software Maintenance AAS PIDs and features announced previously for SAN
Volume Controller V4 apply to SAN Volume Controller Software V4.3.
Use previously announced Software Maintenance features for all SAN Volume
Controller V4.3 functions. Refer to Software Announcement
206-121
, dated May 23, 2006.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and
convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any
transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents
such as the IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA), IBM
International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for
Acquisition of Software Maintenance.
Licensing:
IPLA, including the License Information document and PoE, govern
your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. The
paid invoice acts as PoE for all orders of IBM SAN Volume Controller
Software V4. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport
Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software
Maintenance.
This software license includes Software Maintenance, previously referred
to as Software Subscription and Technical Support.
Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance:
The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
(Z125-6011) agreement applies for maintenance and does not require
customer signatures.

documents will be available for review on the IBM Software License
Agreement Web site
Limited warranty applies:
Yes
Limited warranty:
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified
operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The
warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does
not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that
IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the
results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on
known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at
no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software
Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the
original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Program technical support:
Technical support of a program product will be available for a
minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as
your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows
you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for
product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and
operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you
with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will
be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with
12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM,
including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact
your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be
available for a fee.
Money-back guarantee:
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are
the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for
it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its
PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the
program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for
instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM
International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your
first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any
of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this
term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already
acquired and in use by you.
Authorization for use on home/portable computer:
You may not copy and use this program on another computer.
Volume orders (IVO):

Passport Advantage applies:
Yes, and through the Passport Advantage Web site at
Usage restriction:

This program is licensed on a per-terabyte (with cumulative tiers)
site-wide capacity basis. (Refer to the
Ordering information
section for information on charges for this program.) Users may only install this program on IBM
System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, 2145-8F2, and 2145-4F2 Storage Engines, or
subsequent IBM replacements of these.
Customers are licensed to use this program only to manage storage capacity within a single site, and
only for the amount of storage capacity within that site for which they have received proper
authorization from IBM. Customers must obtain a separate license for any additional sites within
which they want to use SAN Volume Controller Software V4 (5639-VC4) and obtain separate capacity
authorizations for each such site. The 5639-VC4 site license subsumes and supersedes all individual
5639-VC1, 5639-VC2, 5639-VCT, and 5639-VC3 licenses previously in effect at that site.
A customer's right to use the IBM FlashCopy for SAN Volume Controller and Metro/Global Mirror for
SAN Volume Controller features of this program is also limited to the amount of authorizations
obtained from IBM. The authorizations for FlashCopy and for Metro/Global Mirror cannot exceed the
total capacity authorization for the amount of managed storage on all clusters within the site. Use
of FlashCopy features requires license authorizations for only the FlashCopy sources, not the
targets.
Use of Metro/Global Mirror features requires license authorizations for both the Metro/Global Mirror
source and target capacities in use. Use of the Metro/Global Mirror feature between clusters
located in different sites requires separate authorization for each site.
This program is only supported for use with host servers, storage subsystems, and SAN configurations
identified by IBM as being supported for attachment to the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller.
This program is provided together with code provided under separate license agreements, including,
but not limited to, open source license agreements.
Software Maintenance applies:
Yes. Software Maintenance, previously referred to as Software Subscription and Technical
Support, is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support
for the products announced in this announcement is provided by the Software Maintenance offering of
the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity
by providing voice or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with the initial license acquisition of each program
acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal
option.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short
duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides
assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your IS technical support
personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center.
(This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a
day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at
Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and
development of applications, your use of programs in other than their
specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which
IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

the Passport Advantage Web site at
All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software
Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the
date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software
and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending
coverage, for a total of three years from date of acquisition, may be
elected. For additional information, refer to Changes to Distributed
Software Products Model for Products Outside Passport Advantage Software
