The new IBM System Storage TS2250 Tape Drive Express Model H5S (machine type 3580), external stand-alone or rack mountable unit, is designed to offer high capacity and performance for the midrange systems environment. The TS2250 incorporates the Linear Tape-Open™ (LTO) IBM System Storage Ultrium 5 Half-High Tape Drive, which is designed to provide maximum tape drive throughput native data rate performance of up to 140 MB/sec compared to the IBM TS2240 LTO half-high Tape Drive (Ultrium 4) at up to 120 MB/sec native data transfer rate. In addition, with the use of the new IBM LTO Ultrium 5 1.5 TB Data Cartridge, the IBM TS2250 Ultrium 5 Tape Drive provides nearly double the tape cartridge capacity with up to 1.5 TB native physical capacity (3.0 TB with 2:1 compression) compared to previous Ultrium 4 800 GB (1.6 TB with 2:1 compression) Tape Cartridges. IBM Ultrium 5 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 4 data cartridges, and can read LTO Ultrium 3 data cartridges. The TS2250 Model H5S Tape Drive uses a 6 Gbps dual port SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) interface for connection to a wide spectrum of system servers. The new T2250 attaches to the IBM System p5®, IBM Power® System Model p6, and IBM Power System Model p7, and to IBM System x® and PC servers. The TS2900 is part of the IBM System Storage tape library family of offerings.

The TS2900 Tape Autoloader, with a capacity of nine cartridges employing IBM patented high density (HD) slot technology, is a rack-mountable or deskside unit that contains either a single, IBM LTO Ultrium 5 Half-high SAS Tape Drive (Model S5H), IBM LTO Ultrium 4 Half-high SAS Tape Drive (Model S4H), or an IBM LTO Ultrium 3 Half-high SAS Tape Drive (S3H) in a 1U form factor height.

Optional features available for the TS2900 include rack-mount kits, deskside covers, and additional cartridge magazines.

IBM Ultrium 4 or 5 SAS tape drives are encryption capable and will support Transparent LTO Encryption to deliver advanced Systems Managed and Library Managed Encryption through a web-based delivery system. Transparent LTO Encryption is enabled through a license key Encryption Key Manager for LTO Ultrium 4 or 5 SAS drives.

Overview

IBM PowerVP (virtualization performance) for Power Systems offers performance insight into which virtual workloads are using specific physical resources on a Power server. This solution can help reduce time and complexity to pinpoint performance bottlenecks and enables a simple, color-coded dashboard to display the performance health of the system. It can help simplify management, reduce the cost of resolving performance issues, and give you a quick view of the performance health of your server.

PowerVP is tightly integrated with the PowerVM® hypervisor and collects performance data directly from PowerVM, which offers accurate performance information about virtual machines running on Power Systems. This performance information is displayed on a real-time, continuous GUI and is also available for review.

IBM Power analytics solutions give organizations with high volumes of data the building blocks they need to implement capabilities that can enable them to quickly make data-driven business decisions. Each solution can be implemented separately or in combination to help deliver a reliable and high-performance infrastructure for business intelligence (BI) and predictive analytics. The software is installed and configured on the server before being shipped, helping to reduce the time and effort required to gain the benefits of the solution. These analytics solutions are available for any new POWER8 processor-based system:

IBM Solution for Analytics - Power Systems Edition is a flexible integrated solution that provides options to pre-load and configure one or more IBM analytics applications with data warehouse acceleration. Pre-load options include:

IBM Solution for Analytics - Power Systems Edition delivers Cognos Business Intelligence capabilities on POWER8 processor-based servers running AIX or Linux. Cognos Business Intelligence is designed to help business users, executives, and analysts in an organization understand the business and make smarter decisions. The solution offers a full range of BI capabilities, including reports, analysis, dashboards, scorecards, mobile BI, and more.

IBM Solution for Analytics - Systems Edition also delivers SPSS predictive analytics combined with business rules capabilities on a Power server platform running AIX. SPSS Modeler, SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services, and Analytical Decision Management help empower organizations to make the right decision each time for high-demand, mission-critical business requirements. This solution combines and integrates predictive analytics, rules, scoring, and optimization techniques into an organization's processes to deliver recommended actions at the point of impact.

Either or both of these analytics applications can be used in conjunction with supported DB2 with BLU Acceleration capabilities included with DB2 Advanced Workgroup or Advanced Enterprise Editions for enhanced performance. IBM InfoSphere DataStage is also a pre-load option for providing extract-transfer-load (ETL) capabilities from an existing data warehouse to the BLU Acceleration warehouse. A separate purchase of the IBM Cognos, SPSS, DB2, and InfoSphere software is required to meet license use requirements.

BLU Acceleration - Power System Edition is updated to deliver DB2 dynamic in-memory, columnar data warehouse acceleration on a POWER8 processor-based server running AIX. BLU Acceleration is an integral part of DB2 Advanced Workgroup Edition and Advanced Enterprise Edition, enabling organizations to use both row-based and columnar data storage simultaneously. With BLU Acceleration, organizations can help to dramatically reduce the time to get analytic query results and reports from existing data warehouses. Time and effort to set up analytics can be reduced by eliminating the need for aggregates, indexes, tuning, and partitions. The underlying appliance hardware of the Hardware Management Console (HMC) is updated to stay current with updates in hardware technology. The 7042-CR7 system is being replaced with the 7042-CR8.

RAID 1

HMCs continue to offer a high-availability feature. The new 7042-CR8, by default, includes two hard drives with RAID 1 configured. If you prefer not to have RAID 1 enabled on the HMC, you can override it in the ordering system and remove the additional hard disk drive (HDD) from the order.

RAID 1 is also offered on the 7042-CR6, 7042-CR7, and 7042-CR8 as an MES upgrade option.

RAID 1 uses data mirroring. Two physical drives are combined into an array and the same data is written to both drives. This makes the drives a "mirror image" of each other. If one of the drives experiences a failure, it is taken offline and the HMC continues operating with the other drive.

Removal of internal/external modem

The 7042-CR8 HMC does not offer an internal or external modem or support for these.

Performance Data Investigator (PDI) allows further monitoring, detection, and adjustment of specific performance issues. Using the collection data as a base, PDI can model future workloads.

New functions in the integrated IBM i security enable SSO between a Kerberos-enabled FTP client and an IBM i FTP server and between a Kerberos-enabled Telnet client and an IBM i Telnet server. This opens the door for more applications to participate in a single sign-on environment.

IBM i 7.2 has the necessary licensed internal code to support the latest Power servers, taking advantage of the improved resiliency, availability, and scalability characteristics. With additional throughput, these new servers will provide IBM i clients with significant benefits when moving to these new servers.

This release continues to add additional features of the C11 programming standard. The XL C++ compiler in XL C/C++ for AIX, V13.1 is fully compliant with ISO/IEC 14882:2003, the C++ 2003 programming standard, and includes partial support for ISO/IEC 14882:2011, the C++11 programming standard.
