The DS8870 excels in supporting the new IBM zEnterprise® EC12 and high-end IBM Power® server environments and ensures clients are taking full advantage of the integration delivered by these high-end enterprise systems. New hardware features include:
IBM POWER7 processor technology
The DS8870 high-performance flagship model features IBM POWER7 server technology to help support high performance. The DS8870 model delivers up to three times performance improvement in I/O operations per second in transaction processing workload environments as the prior model. Compared to the performance of the previous DS8000 system, DS8800, this new processor aids the DS8870 in improving the performance of both sequential read and sequential write throughputs by over 60%.
The DS8870 provides a nondisruptive upgrade from the smallest to the largest configuration. This includes adding cache and processors for increased performance, adding host ports for increased connectivity, adding HDDs and SSDs and additional Model 96E frames to the base 961 frame for increased capacity, and adding advanced function software features.
Memory support
DS8870 provides from 16 GB to 1 TB of processor memory and continues to be managed in 4 KB segments for optimal cache efficiency. Total memory support has increased by 266% compared to DS8800.
Improved rack power system

Overview
The new IBM Power 770 server (9117-MMD) uses the latest POWER7+ processor and the next-generation I/O technology designed to deliver unprecedented performance, scalability, reliability, and manageability for demanding commercial workloads.
The innovative Power 770 model MMD server is a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), rack-mounted server. This modular system uses one to four enclosures that are four EIA units tall and housed in a 19-inch rack. Each enclosure contains four powerful POWER7+ processors and high density memory DIMMs using 4Gb technology. IBM continues to use a high performance PCIe Gen2, I/O backplane that was introduced with the model MMC.
The new POWER7+ processors are designed as single chip modules (SCMs), each with 64-bit architecture. L3 cache on POWER7+ 770 processor chips has been increased 2.5X compared to previous POWER7+ processor chips. Each POWER7+ SCM enables either three or four active processor cores with 10 MB per core of L3 cache and 256 KB per core of L2 cache. Power 770 systems are available at frequencies of 3.8 GHz with 64 cores, or 4.2 GHz with 48 cores. This new system is available with as few as four active cores and incrementing one core at a time through built-in Capacity on Demand (CoD) to the full capacity of the system.
POWER7+ chips imbed new hardware accelerators for AIX memory expansion and AIX Encrypted File System and IPSec network security protocol. This can offload work from processor cores from doing these tasks and improve performance of those functions. Combined with the increased POWER7+ clock speeds this helps Power Systems be a continued workhorse for critical workloads. Applications may run faster and be more responsive, which may result in competitive advantages and higher customer satisfaction.
The POWER7+ hardware accelerator for Active Memory Expansion provides 25% higher levels of memory expansion than available with POWER7 chips. While POWER7 Systems offer up to 100% memory expansion which can effectively double the server's maximum memory, POWER7+ servers offer up to 125% memory expansion for AIX partitions. Thus a system memory maximum of 4 TB could effectively become 9 TB effective memory capacity.
The EXP30 Ultra SSD I/O Drawer (#EDR1) provides the Power 770+ and Power 780+ up to 30 SSDs in just 1U of rack space without any PCIe slots. The drawer provides up to 480,000 IOPS and up to 12.6.2 TB of capacity for AIX or Linux clients. Up to 48 additional HDD can be directly attached to the Ultra Drawer (still without using any PCIe slots), enabling up to 43.2 TB additional capacity in only 4U additional rack space for AIX clients. This ultradense SSD option is attached to the 770+ or 780+ using a new GX++ 2-port PCIe2 x 8 Adapter (#1914).
Also being announced for the Power 770 model MMD are new high-density memory DIMMs using 4Gb technology. This includes new memory DIMMs for 32, 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB DDR3 memory feature codes. Existing memory features are supported for model upgrades.
IBM continues to expand the availability of orderable features supporting the MSP Utility Pricing Offer. This program leverages channel-led discounting for Managed Service Providers (MSPs) who purchase a Cloud Hosting Infrastructure built with IBM hardware and software. The discounts, which lower the up-front purchase price, are made available only when the MSPs sign an attachment to their current IBM Customer Agreement (ICA), requiring the MSP to pay for use of their cloud infrastructure.
IBM has previously announced the Core Use HW Feature (EUC6) for the following Power Systems (8202-E4C, 8205-E6C, 9117-MMC) and BladeCenters (7891-73X). Newly available are the Core Use HW Feature (EUC6) for 9117-MMD and the Ten Core Use HW Feature (EUC7) for the following Power Systems (8202-E4C, 8205-E6C, 9117-MMC and 9117-MMD).
Also available is the MSP Order Recognition RPQ (8A2060) for Power Systems models 8202-E4C, 8205-E6C, 9117-MMC, and 9117-MMD, BladeCenter model 7891-73X, and Flex System Compute Node models 7895-22X, 7895-42X, and 7863-10x. A quantity of one 8A2060 is required to be ordered at initial purchase or MES purchase for each machine type model included in the MSP's cloud infrastructure, when contracting for the MSP Utility Pricing Offer.
Also new is the MSP Core Use Payment PRPQ (P91287). MSPs can order a quantity of Core Use Features (combination of MSP per Processor Core and MSP per 10 Processor Cores) each quarter to make their use payment if the cloud infrastructure includes Flex System Compute Nodes. The quantity of features to be ordered is determined by the MSP's actual use of the cloud infrastructure (average cores assigned to active client virtual servers).

The Hardware Management Console (HMC) V7R760 is designed to deliver support for:
- RAID 1, enabling data redundancy and high levels of performance
- Power servers and management of BladeCenter power blade servers
- Up to 16 concurrent live partition mobility (LPM) activities with PowerVM
- Latest web browsers
Overview
The Hardware Management Console (HMC) is updating its underlying appliance hardware to stay current with updates in hardware technology. The 7042-CR6 system is being replaced with the 7042-CR7.
RAID 1:
HMCs now offer a high-availability feature. The new 7042-CR7, by default, includes two hard drives with RAID 1 configured. If you prefer not to have RAID 1 enabled on the HMC, you can override it in the ordering system and remove the additional HDD from the order.
RAID 1 is also offered on both the 7042-CR6 and the 7042-CR7 as an MES upgrade option.
RAID 1 uses data mirroring. Two physical drives are combined into an array, and data is striped across the array. The first half of a stripe is the original data; the second half is a mirror (that is, a copy) of the data, but it is written to the other drive in the RAID 1 array.
RAID 1, which requires two physical drives, enables data redundancy.
Blade management:
The HMC gives systems administrators a tool for planning, virtualizing, deploying, and managing IBM Power System servers.
With the introduction of HMC V7R760, the HMC can now manage IBM BladeCenter Power Blade servers. This includes support for dual VIOS, live partition mobility between blades and rack servers, and management of both blades and rack servers from a single management console.
Removal of internal modem:
Future releases of the HMC hardware will not offer an internal modem option.
New features:

The enhanced EXP30 Ultra SSD I/O Drawer (#EDR1) provides the IBM Power 770+ and IBM Power 780+ up to 30 solid-state drives (SSD) in just 1U of rack space without any PCIe slots. The drawer provides up to 480,000 IOPS and up to 11.6 TB of capacity for AIX or Linux clients. Plus up to 48 additional HDDs can be directly attached to the Ultra Drawer (still without using any PCIe slots), providing up to 43.2 TB additional capacity in only 4U additional rack space for AIX clients. This ultra-dense SSD option is very similar to the Ultra Drawer (#5888), which remains available to the Power 710, 720, 730, and 740.
Two new GX++ adapters provide PCIe Gen2 functionality and performance in extremely dense and efficient packaging for the Power 795. The new GX++ adapters eliminate the need for a GX++ 12X adapter, 12X cables, a 12X-attached PCIe I/O drawer, and a PCIe adapter. In some cases, they may even alleviate the need for an expansion rack. Plus they also offer slightly lower latency compared to similar PCIe adapters as they are attached directly to the GX++ port. The two adapters are a 2-port 16Gb Fibre Channel adapter (#EN23) and a 2-port 10Gb Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) or Converged Network Adapter (#EN22).
IBM i 7.1 adds support for RDX Removable Media Devices. RDX docking stations and drives can provide a more reliable, higher performance, and lower cost option to traditional entry tape options such as DAT160 and older QIC and LTO-2 tape drives. IBM i 7.1 supports USB RDX Removable Disk on newer servers and supports the new SATA RDX Removable Disk (#EU07) on many earlier servers. In addition, IBM i 7.1 adds support for the USB-attached DAT160 tape drive.
IBM i 7.1 also adds support for a significantly lower priced 2-port asynchronous communications adapter (#5289 and #5290). Compared to the existing IBM i supported 2-port adapter (#2893 and #2894), the new adapter is half the price (less a modem) and is available as either a low-profile (#5289) or full-high (#5290) adapter, improving configuration flexibility.
RDX docking stations are refreshed with slightly newer technology (#EU03, #EU04, and #EU23) replacing the existing docking stations (#1103, #1104, and #1123) in most proposals. Similarly, the slimline DVD drive that is placed in Power 710 through Power 780 system units is refreshed and is now ordered as feature 5771 instead of the current feature 5762.
The 900 GB/856 GB 10k RPM SAS HDD (#1737, #1738, #1751, and #1752) offers lower cost per gigabyte and better storage density compared to smaller HDDs. Four feature numbers are used to identify if the drive is SFF-1 or SFF-2 and if shipped formatted with 528-byte sectors for RAID arrays (ordered for IBM i environments) or JBOD formatted with 512-byte sectors (ordered for AIX/Linux/VIOS environments).
PowerLinux servers improve their big data capabilities with new SSD features offering more attractive pricing (#ELQK (177 GB) and #ELQL (387 GB)) for the highest performance needs. Plus for lower performance but better cost per gigabyte, support is provided for the new 900 GB 10k RPM HDD.
The PCIe Gen2 RoCE Adapter capabilities are enhanced with expanded configuration options and expanded support. A new RoCE adapter (#EC29/#EC30) provides an SR fiber optical cabling option in addition to the existing adapter with copper cabling (#EC27/#EC28). RoCE support is expanded to include the Power 795.

Overview
The new IBM Power 780 server (9179-MHD) uses the latest POWER7+ processor and the next-generation I/O technology to deliver unprecedented performance, scalability, reliability, and manageability for demanding commercial workloads.
The innovative Power 780 model MHD server is a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), rack-mounted server. This modular system uses one to four enclosures that are four EIA units tall and housed in a 19-inch rack. Each enclosure contains four powerful POWER7+ processors and high density memory DIMMs using 4Gb technology. IBM continues to use a high-performance PCIe Gen2, I/O backplane introduced with model MHC.
The new POWER7+ processors are designed as single chip modules (SCMs), each with 64-bit architecture. L3 cache on POWER7+ 780 processor chips has been increased 2.5X compared to previous POWER7 processor chips. Each POWER7+ SCM enables either four or eight active processor cores with up to 10 MB per core of L3 cache and 256 KB per core of L2 cache. Power 780 systems are available at frequencies of 3.72 GHz with 128 cores, or 4.42 GHz with 64 cores. This new model server is available with as few as four active cores and incrementing one core at a time through built-in Capacity on Demand (CoD) functions to the full capacity of the system.
New high-density memory DIMMs using 4 Gb technology are now available for the Power 780 model MHD. This includes new memory DIMMs for 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB DDR3 memory features. Existing memory features are supported for model upgrades.
The EXP30 Ultra SSD I/O Drawer (#EDR1) gives the Power 770+ and Power 780+ up to 30 solid state drives (SSDs) in just 1U of rack space without PCIe slots. The drawer provides up to 480,000 IOPS and up to 12.6 TB of capacity for AIX or Linux clients. Up to 48 additional HDDs can be directly attached to the Ultra Drawer (still without using any PCIe slots), enabling up to 43.2 TB additional capacity in only 4U additional rack space for AIX clients. This ultradense SSD option is attached to the 770+ or 780+ using a new GX++ 2-port, PCIe2 x8 Adapter (#1914).
POWER7+ processor chips imbed new hardware accelerators for AIX memory expansion and AIX Encrypted File System and IPSec network security protocol.
The POWER7+ hardware accelerator for Active Memory Expansion delivers 25% higher levels of memory expansion than available with POWER7 processor chips. While POWER7 systems offer up to 100% memory expansion which can effectively double the server's maximum memory, POWER7+ servers offer up to 125% memory expansion for AIX partitions. Thus, a system memory maximum of 4 TB could effectively become 9 TB effective memory capacity.
A new firmware feature called Dynamic Platform Optimizer is available on both Power 770 model MMD and Power 780 model MHD. This feature monitors processor and memory affinity and adjusts workload placement to optimize performance in a virtualized consolidated environment.
As part of the IBM commitment to delivering the most flexible and resilient Power high-end systems, all new Power 780 (9179-MHD) and 795 servers come standard with a specific number of Elastic On/Off CoD processor and memory days depending on the configuration of the system at initial ship or upgrade time. For every new Power 780 or 795, 15 Elastic CoD On/Off processor days and 240 GB memory days will be included at no charge for every processor core initially shipped with the system. These Elastic CoD On/Off processor and memory days must be used in accordance with the Temporary Capacity on Demand terms and conditions.
The new Power Systems Pools offering is a multisystem IBM Power 780 and 795 infrastructure offering designed to enable a highly resilient and flexible IT environment in support of large-scale server consolidation and your most demanding business application requirements. Power Systems Pools allows for the aggregation of On/Off and Elastic CoD compute resources, including processors and memory, across a number of Power 780 and 795 servers. It delivers greater flexibility to respond to critical application workload requirements as well as to enhance the availability of your applications.
As part of the offering, those Power 780 and 795 servers that participate in an IBM Power Systems Pools environment are provided with regularly planned maintenance events (up to eight in a calendar year) that enables you to turn on inactive processors and memory in another participating system in the pool in the event that a system may need to be brought down for some type of maintenance occurrence. In addition, all On/Off and Elastic CoD processor and memory days, including those that now come standard with all new Power 780 and 795 servers, can be accumulated and managed at a pool level to effectively and efficiently manage and balance application workload peak requirements. Power Systems Pools can consist of up to 10 Power 780 or Power 795 systems to support large-scale application, database, and infrastructure requirements.
New to both Power 780 model MHD and Power 795 model FHB are 90-day temporary On/Off CoD processor and memory enablement features. These features enable a system to temporarily activate all inactive processor and memory CoD resources for a maximum of 90 days before you must order another temporary On/Off enablement feature number. Also new for Power 780 model MHD are high-density memory DIMMs that use 4 Gb technology. These memory DIMMs are for 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB DDR3 memory features. This enables a new 256 GB DDR3 memory feature increase the model FHB maximum memory capacity from 8 TB to 16 TB. IBM continues to offer the 32 GB, 2 Gb memory feature.

Overview
IBM Programmable Network Controller provides network virtualization and network programmability of an OpenFlow network using an OpenFlow controller. It enables a new method of managing data center networking known as Software Defined Networking (SDN).
An SDN network is one in which the end-station connectivity is created and managed by logically centralized software residing on an external entity such as a server or a dedicated appliance. This arrangement differs from traditional networking where end station connectivity is created and managed by all the network elements working in coordination with other network elements and by using distributed network protocols. In an SDN network, the logically centralized software residing on a server or an appliance makes the decisions on forwarding of packets in the network and is known as an SDN controller.

Overview
IBM CICS Transaction Server for z/OS ( CICS TS) V5.1 satisfies over one hundred customer requirements that help drive operational efficiencies while increasing service agility, moving customers towards a service delivery platform for cloud computing. It is supported by five core foundational CICS tools that exploit the new capabilities of CICS TS V5.1.
Driving operational efficiencies
Greater capacity is delivered through significant vertical and horizontal scalability enhancements. Fewer regions can now run the same workload. They provide the opportunity for cost savings through consolidation. Reducing the number of regions can deliver savings in both CPU consumption and administration overheads.
Managed operations are provided through the introduction of policies which deliver automated control over critical system resources. Task thresholds can now be set for data access requests, storage usage, program loops, and processor time used. Policy breaches can be managed by issuing messages, abending tasks, or emitting events that can trigger further actions. Policies can be applied dynamically during runtime operations.
Increased availability enhancements reduce the need for planned outages. CICS TS V5.1 can be upgraded without requiring z/OS to be restarted. SSL certificates can be refreshed dynamically, without restarting the CICS regions. A heartbeat capability keeps IPIC connections established and ready for use. Additionally, CICS TS V5.1 provides greater support for IBM Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex/Active-Active (GDPS/AA) availability solutions.
Deeper insight into performance and compliance information can help to tune and audit system usage. For example, SPI commands that alter system configurations are logged. Identity propagation is extended and there is improved auditing of user IDs that make requests over IP. Information on the SSL cipher suites used, along with information on the actual and potential usage of specialty processors, can help tune system performance.
Increasing service agility
First-class applications enable the creation of agile services from existing assets. Disparate application resources can be combined and managed as a single entity that can be versioned and rapidly moved through the development, test, and production lifecycle. Dependency management is also handled. Entire applications can be measured for resource usage and internal billings. Applications can be managed dynamically by applying policies during runtime.
First-class platforms enable the creation of agile service delivery runtimes. CICS regions can be grouped as platforms for rapid application deployments. Decoupling applications from the underlying topology increases flexibility. When regions within a platform are started applications are deployed to them, without any further interaction from a system administrator. Reliability is increased through automatic resource validation, provisioning, and de-provisioning. Platforms can be managed dynamically by applying policies during runtime.
Modern interfaces enable customers to build rich web experiences for critical applications. CICS TS V5.1 delivers a production-ready web container for the deployment of lightweight Java servlets and Java Server Pages (JSPs). End-to-end application performance is optimized through fast, local access to CICS applications and data. Updates to interfaces can be rolled out rapidly through OSGi packaged deployments that can fully integrate with first-class applications and platforms. This capability is built on the IBM WebSphere Application Server Liberty profile for compatibility.
Foundational enhancements extend the core CICS capabilities in a number of areas. CICS events can be captured on operator writes and system messages, and events can be emitted on a one-to-many basis. The CICS-WebSphere MQ Dynamic Program Link (DPL) bridge now supports greater-than-32KB messages. Enhancements to IPIC add support for IBM Information Management System ( IMS ) communications, and improve integration and error recovery. Application storage needs can be reduced through GET and PUT container enhancements. Entire CICSPlex® System Manager ( CICSPlex SM) systems can be backed-up and restored without manual overrides. The CICS clock can be adjusted for daylight saving time changes, without any further interaction from a system administrator.
IBM also announces the update of five core foundational CICS tools products to align with CICS TS V5.1. These core foundational CICS tools exploit and augment the latest operational efficiency and service agility enhancements made in CICS TS V5.1.
IBM CICS Explorer , the strategic management interface for CICS TS, is upgraded to CICS Explorer V5.1. This is a major update to support the latest CICS TS and CICS tools capabilities. CICS Explorer V5.1 will also work with other supported versions of CICS TS.

IBM Infoprint XT for z/OS , V3.1 helps you migrate efficiently from your Xerox print environment to an Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) print environment, allowing you to standardize on a single output architecture. With Infoprint XT, you can easily transform established Xerox application data to AFP format for storing, retrieving, viewing, and printing without changing your existing applications.
Using IBM Xerox Transform (XT) technology, Xerox print resources, such as fonts, forms, images, and logos, are converted into their AFP equivalents, and Xerox Line Conditioned Data Streams (LCDS) or Metacode data streams are converted into AFP Mixed Object Document Content Architecture (MO:DCA) data streams. Once converted, you can print these resources and data streams on high-speed, reliable Intelligent Printer Data Stream (IPDS) devices or you can place them in the IBM Content Manager OnDemand archival and retrieval system. When stored in libraries identified to Print Services Facility (PSF), the AFP print resources are automatically made available for printing on all of the printers that support such resources.
You have the option of printing Xerox application data on cut sheet devices to retain control over options such as tray selection, or you can print it on continuous form printers that usually offer a lower total cost of operation (TCO) than cut sheet devices. In either case, Infoprint XT for z/OS , V3.1 is designed to help optimize the productivity of your output operations by automating much of the migration from Xerox resources and data streams to AFP and allowing you to standardize on a single output architecture.
Infoprint XT for z/OS , V3.1 provides the following new capabilities or enhanced functions:
- Adds the ability to transform Xerox Laser Printer Series (LPS) highlight color resources and data streams into an AFP print environment with full color instructions for use with AFP/IPDS color printers and with archiving and viewing solutions. This new capability supports:
- Color text in Metacode and LCDS data streams
- Highlight color text and shading in FRM files
- Color commands in Xerox Print Description Language/Dynamic Job Descriptor Entries (PDL/DJDEs)
- Highlight color image (IMG) files
- Includes new batch JCL programs for executing newly developed transform commands
- Enhances double-byte character set (DBCS) support by adding support for Fuji Xerox IBM 3200 control codes, monochrome DBCS forms (FRMs), and the LPI DJDEs

The DB2 Analytics Accelerator supports the current z196 and z114 series of System z and the new next-generation System z zEnterprise EC 12 (zEC12) This new system has up to 50% system capacity performance improvement over z196 80-way, with a 25% performance improvement over the z196 uniprocessor. In addition, it includes 33% more L2 cache for instructions and data. This zEC12 has industry standard 8 GBps InfiniBand, supporting high-speed connectivity and high bandwidth. Further, it includes the new IBM zAware offering, which monitors large quantities of message logs for smarter monitoring with high-speed analytics.
Query Prioritization - Extending the value of System z workload management
Mixed workloads refers to an environment that contains a variety of types of processing and end users, each with differing levels of importance. Each of these workloads has unique users with distinct needs and the priority of meeting those needs can vary greatly. In Version 2, workload management was adhered to throughout DB2 , but when it was routed to the Accelerator those priorities were not enforced. This release brings System z workload management down to the individual query being routed to the accelerator. This helps users see to it that the most important work is completed first, while still enabling robust overall throughput.
Incremental Update - Introducing near real-time currency for all business analytics
With the new incremental update capability, tables within the accelerator are continually updated throughout the day. This technology reads the log of the database residing on DB2 for z/OS and applies those updates to the DB2 Analytics Accelerator. With this feature enabled, queries off-loaded to the DB2 Analytics Accelerator operate on a near real-time version of the data. This feature helps dramatically lower the latency of data, enabling decisions to be made based on the most up-to-date information available. You can use this feature when the workload being accelerated requires high currency of data for applications such as operational Business Intelligence (BI). The incremental update is included in the accelerator and integrated into the existing appliance form factor.
High Capacity - Extending the size and scalability
The entire Netezza 1000 product line is now supported. The DB2 Analytics Accelerator scales from one cabinet to 10 cabinets of Netezza 1000. This change reflects the demand for larger and larger accelerators to meet the needs of the larger data warehouses present on System z .
Accelerating SAP - Delivering transparent speed and real savings
DB2 for z/OS is an SAP-certified database, and the DB2 Analytics Accelerator is a natural extension to the SAP NetWeaver BW. Clients who want to transparently speed up their SAP environment will find the DB2 Analytics Accelerator a fast and easy way to deploy solution that meets their needs. This is a Plug and Play solution that most find requires no change to an existing SAP application. All queries are still sent to DB2 unchanged. Beyond the speed improvement it can also reduces processing cost by freeing up MIPS and storage space used for indexing.
UNLOAD Lite - Continuing to reduce overhead costs
UNLOAD Lite offloads z/OS MIPS when transferring data to the DB2 Analytics Accelerator via table or partition load. The current approach uses the normal DB2 UNLOAD Utility to extract the data from DB2 and to write it to an USS pipe, where it is sent via TCP/IP to the accelerator. With UNLOAD Lite, the data conversions are done on the accelerator and not on z/OS .
The DB2 Analytics Accelerator for DB2 for z/OS V3.1 can be used only in conjunction with the prerequisite products as an integrated solution. Refer to the Key prerequisites , Hardware requirements , and Software requirements sections.
