Overview
Built on the promise of the IBM BladeCenter family of products -- easy-to-use, integrated platforms with a high degree of deployment flexibility, scalability, and manageability -- the new BladeCenter JS23 and JS43 Express are the premier blades for 64-bit applications. They represent one of the most flexible and cost-efficient solutions for UNIX®, IBM i, and Linux deployments available in the market. Further enhanced by their ability to be installed in the same chassis with other BladeCenter servers, the JS23 and JS43 are designed to deliver the rapid return on investment that small businesses demand. Delivering on the promise of a truly dynamic Infrastructure, the BladeCenter JS23 and JS43 help in delivering superior business and IT services with agility and speed -- all in a simple-to-manage, highly efficient way.
The 4.2 GHz BladeCenter JS23 and JS43 use the POWER6+ version of the POWER6 processor.
The JS23 and JS43 Express blades have been preconfigured and tested by IBM and are based on proven technology. Utilizing a 4.2 GHz 64-bit POWER6 processor and available in a 4-core or 8-core configuration including a new 32 MB Level 3 cache for each core pair, and simultaneous multi-threading, they are designed to deliver outstanding performance and capabilities at compelling prices. With faster and more reliable double data rate 2 (DDR2) memory options and support for eight to sixteen memory DIMM slots along with a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) disk subsystem, the BladeCenter JS23 and JS43 Express blades are designed for increased uptime and enhanced performance. Exploiting the newest in high-performance and energy-efficient solutions like solid state disk technology, the JS23 and JS43 offer remarkable performance for I/O-intensive applications. And for those that require fast and frequent data access, the JS23 and JS43 offer the utmost in easy-to-manage, tough-to-break solutions. Along with built-in support for PowerVM Editions for advanced virtualization features such as Live Partition Mobility and Active Memory Sharing, the JS23 and JS43 Express offer an ideal blade server solution for driving your most demanding performance- and memory-intensive workloads, such as virtualization, databases, and high performance computing (HPC) applications. By consolidating and virtualizing on BladeCenter with the JS23 and JS43, you can increase the utilization of your hardware and decrease the number of physical assets you need to watch over. This translates into real dollar savings through better energy conservation and IT resource usage across the data center.
Meeting today's cost challenges while planning for tomorrow's growth can be difficult. When you demand more performance, these blade servers are ready to scale to four processors with the addition of a multi-processor expansion unit (MPE). Simply snap the MPE to the original blade and it becomes a four-processor, eight-core, 60-mm blade server with additional performance, additional memory, and twice the I/O expansion to deliver a flexible, resilient, and highly scalable IT infrastructure. Best of all, this expansion capability won't break the bank and provides the opportunity to standardize on a single blade platform for all your needs.
With IBM BladeCenter and IBM i, you can realize innovation with proven sixth-generation POWER technology for enhanced performance, efficiency, and reliability features; help cut costs and consolidate workloads with leadership virtualization as a built-in feature; go green with better energy management by using EnergyScale technology; and manage growth, complexity, and risk with the flexibility of IBM BladeCenter technology. With i support, small and medium clients can consolidate their IBM System i® and Intel® processor-based servers into a single chassis, leveraging the management, space, and power savings provided by IBM BladeCenter solutions. Large or small enterprises can now consolidate their IBM i applications into a centralized BladeCenter environment with a choice of BladeCenter chassis and blade configurations to fit their needs.

Overview
Numerous enhancements for POWER6 processor-based servers expand configuration
options and offer I/O performance enhancements. Key enhancements include new
12X I/O drawers, new PCIe adapters, a new large cache disk adapter, and high-speed
solid state drives (SSD). Additionally, the Power 520 can now support SFF
disk bays in the system unit. SFF disk drives are offered for the Power 520,
550, and new 12X I/O drawers. The Power 5201, 5501,
560 and 570 have refreshed DVD options. The Power 570 has enhanced split backplane
capabilities and a new monitor is being announced.
New 12X I/O drawers expand server I/O performance and capability in both
19-inch (#5802) and 24-inch (#5803 and #5873) environments by supporting higher-speed
connections to the server and by supporting PCIe 8x adapters and SFF disks.
The 24-inch I/O drawer is available with (#5803) or without SFF disk bays
(#5873). New 12X DDR (Double Data Rate) cables supporting the higher-speed
connection are required for the new 12X I/O drawers and are available in four
lengths.
With the new 24-inch 12X I/O drawers, the Power 595 supports PCIe adapters
previously available on other POWER6 servers as well as new PCIe adapters.
This includes support for the 8 Gb Fibre Channel adapter (#5735) that supports
NPIV, with proper OS levels.
New PCIe I/O adapters are announced for the Power 520, 550, 560, 570, 575,
and 595, including:
- The PCIe Dual - x4 SAS Adapter (#5901) controls SAS disk (SFF or 3.5-inch),
tape, or removable media. The PCIe adapter feature 5901 is functionally similar
to the PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 SAS Adapter (#5912 and #5900).
- The PCIe 380 MB Cache Dual-4X SAS RAID Adapter (#5903) is an excellent
solution for higher-performance applications controlling SAS disk (SFF or
3.5-inch) drives. It also supports SSDs. Pairs of these adapters are required
when used to provide mirrored write cache data and mirrored RAID parity footprints
between the adapters for superior availability. The PCIe adapter feature 5903
is functionally similar to the PCI-X DDR Dual - x4 3 Gb SAS RAID Adapter (#5902).
- Two additional PCIe 10 Gb Ethernet adapters provide either SR optic (#5769)
or a CX4 twinax copper (#5732) cabling.
- The PCIe 4-Port Async EIA-232 Adapter (#5785) connects asynchronous data
terminal equipment and data circuit terminating equipment.
The PCI-X DDR 1.5 GB cache SAS RAID Adapters (#5904, #5906, and #5908)
have extremely large write and read caches to help SAS disk drives and SSDs
provide a higher level of I/O performance to the server. This is a double-slot
adapter, which includes auxiliary write cache protection. Three features are
available, two for the different blind swap cassette and one without cassette.
The PCI-X features 5904, 5906, and 5908 are functionally similar to the PCI-X
Disk Controller 1.5 GB features 5778, 5780, and 5782, which control SCSI disk
drives.
New solid state drives provide for storage and retrieval of data that is
much faster than spinning disk drives. These 69 GB drives leap over bottlenecks
in disk drive technology. The root cause for disk's slower performance is
waiting for the movement of the disk platter and the disk arm. SSD random
reads/writes can occur in microseconds, not the milliseconds that it takes
for spinning drives (also called hard disk drives or HDD). I/O
performance increases, resulting in overall system performance (depending
upon configuration and applications).
SSD has more than just performance advantages. SSD has no moving parts,
increasing its reliability. SSD has no motor and needs far less electrical
power or cooling than disk drives. Moreover, unlike HDDs that are often run
at 50% or less of their storage capacity to help maintain consistent performance,
SSD can be run much closer to 100% storage capacity and still provide excellent
performance.
The 69 GB SSD plugs into a standard SAS drive bay slot and is controlled
by a SAS controller. SSD is available in two form factors, a 3.5-inch (#3586,
#3587) and in SFF (#1890, #1909). The 3.5-inch SSD is used in the EXP 12S
Enclosure Drawer (#5886) and is controlled by the PCI-X 1.5 GB Cache RAID
adapter or a pair of PCIe 380 MB Cache RAID adapters. The 3.5-inch SSD is
also used in the Power 560/570 CEC and is controlled by either the imbedded
controller or the PCI-X 1.5 GB Cache controller. The SFF SSD is used in Power
520/550 CEC SFF slots and is controlled by the imbedded controller or the
PCI-X 1.5 GB Cache controller.
Power 520 can be ordered with either the new eight 2.5-inch SFF SAS drive
slots or the previously announced six 3.5-inch SAS drive slots. Split backplane
options are supported with either SFF or 3.5-inch slots. The SFF slots can
support either SFF disk drives or SSDs. System unit SFF capability is now
consistent between both the Power 5201and 5501. Three
SFF disks are available for the Power 520 and 550 and for the new 12X I/O
drawers with SFF disk bays: 10K RPM 146 GB (#1882) and 15K RPM 73.4 GB (#1883)
with AIX/Linux, and 15K RPM 69.7 GB (#1884) with IBM i. All of these features are available
on Power 575 except for feature 1884.
The Power 520, 550, 560, and 570 system units have refreshed DVD options
using a SATA interface. Select from two DVDs: the SATA Slimline DVD-ROM Drive
(#5743) and the SATA Slimline DVD-RAM Drive (#5762). The Power 560 and 570
use a new media backplane (#5674) for support of one SATA media device in
a single CEC enclosure.
The Power 560 and 570 CEC enclosures have an enhanced SAS adapter for internal
Split DASD option (#5911) that supports attachment of a removable media device
external to the CEC enclosure. This is in addition to providing a connection
for three SAS disk drives in the system unit such as the feature 5909 provides.
A new wide-screen, flat-panel LCD monitor (#3632) replaces previously offered
monitors for the Power 520, 550, 560, 570, and 595.

using IBM Systems
Director along with HMC-managed systems or customers managing a large number
of logical partitions or servers. For any CR3, CR4, C06, or C07 models already
installed in the field, 2 GB or 4 GB can be ordered via MES and installed
by the customer.
Given the preference and usage of the built-in broadband capability of
the HMC, IBM will
no longer ship a modem with the HMC. Modems will continue to be optionally
available for clients who want a modem connection.

Overview
Business Event Processing (BEP) is the next generation in event processing.
It extends the capabilities and tools of traditional event processing approaches
to the business user to sense and respond to business events-any occurrence
or happening within business context-presenting opportunities or threats.
WebSphere Business
Events is a software system designed specifically for managing these business
events flowing across systems and people with the goal of providing timely
insight and response. Business events are discovered and described in business
terms to meet business objectives based on high-level management goals. WebSphere Business
Events allows business users to sense (detect and decide) and respond effectively
to the impact of business events.
WebSphere Business
Events delivers this capability through intuitive business user tools that
define, implement, and manage business events. WebSphere Business Events uniquely
provides graphical, codeless authoring for defining related elements:
- Business event actions
- Business interaction logic
- External sources for event data enrichment
- Consoles for task management and business event flow visualizations of
charts, graphs, and dashboard layouts
Key features include:
- Enables straightforward expression of business event interaction logic
- Understands business language and vernacular
- Senses business events and patterns and initiates the appropriate business
actions
- Includes codeless, graphical authoring tools
- Delivers simple and integrated visualization dashboard support
- Connects to existing islands of event information
- Supports both simple and complex business event pattern correlations
- Delivers an integrated development and execution system
- Installs as plug and play to extend your existing environments
- Operates with high performance, scalability, and high availability (HA)
- Enhances existing Business Process Management (BPM), connectivity products,
service oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructures, as well as mainframe
applications
WebSphere Business
Events for z/OS V6.2.1 further
extends the extensive distributed platform for executing business event processing
for events native to the mainframe platform. The z/OS platform provides a highly secure,
scalable, high-performance enterprise operating system on which to build and
deploy Internet and Java-enabled applications, providing a comprehensive and
diverse application execution environment. WebSphere Business Events will also
exploit and complement z/OS qualities of service such as high availability
at low cost per transaction, as WebSphere Business Events workload
is eligible for off-load to the System z Application Assist Processors
(zAAPs).
In addition, WebSphere Business
Events V6.2.1 delivers enhanced monitoring dashboard visuals within the IBM BPM
Business Space on both distributed and z/OS platforms.
WebSphere Business
Events eXtreme Scale, a combined offering of WebSphere Business Events and WebSphere Business
Events eXtreme Scale, extends business event processing to customers with
an extreme volume of business events flowing through their enterprise. WebSphere eXtreme
Scale provides efficient manipulation of data in the grid, filtering through
an extreme number of raw events and passing only the actionable events through
to WebSphere Business
Events for business event processing pattern detection. The combination of WebSphere eXtreme
Scale and WebSphere Business
events allows optimal event distribution, using partitioning to span both

Overview
CICS Transaction
Server for z/OS (CICS TS)
is a modern, dependable, cost-effective application platform. It is designed
to execute mixed language application workloads, supporting both modern and
traditional programming languages and models. Its extensive data communication
services, and its foundations in service oriented architecture (SOA), provide
unparalleled connectivity and scalability. As a result, CICS TS fits
naturally into a "smart" infrastructure of the kind needed for a flexible,
global enterprise.
CICS TS
V4.1 addresses the needs of a rapidly changing business environment. Its features
include the emission of business events, Web 2.0 programming support, and
new operational tooling. These and other enhancements bring a new agility
to CICS,
complementing established qualities of security, reliability, availability,
scalability, data integrity and application responsiveness.
CICS TS
V4.1 brings new levels of ease-of-use and flexibility to meet the needs of
the next generation of business users, and is aimed at helping users in:
- Competing for new opportunities by gaining insight into business processes
and responding by modifying key business applications quickly and with confidence.
- Complying with corporate, industry and government policies to manage business
risk of critical business applications.
- Controlling costs by simplifying IT infrastructure and improving development
and operations productivity through easier-to-use interfaces and functions.
The increase in insight and responsiveness is provided by new technologies,
such as event-driven processes, business dashboards and Web 2.0 applications.
These enable the innovation required to deliver growth in even the most challenging
business climate. For example, CICS applications can use new capabilities
to:
- Support business event detection and emission from CICS without the need to change existing
applications, enabling the creation of production business views using dashboards
in a matter of hours.
- Create new business insight by publishing key application data, enabling
rich client developers to use Web 2.0 technologies, such as Atom feeds and
RESTful interfaces, to create mashups and other situational applications.
- Modify processes rapidly and with confidence by assembling and deploying
new business applications quickly using service components.
It has never been more important for a business to exercise proper governance
and demonstrate compliance to government and industry standards. Line-of-business
managers need to monitor critical business processes, and their supporting
application programs, to identify exceptions. They need both real-time status
information and mechanisms for handling exceptions.
CICS TS
V4.1 meets the need for greater control. It can be configured to feed business
event processing engines and business dashboards, without the need to change
existing applications. This allows line-of-business managers to ensure that
business processes are monitored, to assess compliance requirements, and react
to compliance failures, security breaches, and incidents of fraud.
Although CICS TS
V4.1 places great emphasis on the needs of customer lines-of-business, it
also offers relief to IT support staff. As first- and second-generation IT
staff leave the industry, their successors need tools and other help to cope
with the workload. CICS TS V4.1 addresses these issues. For example:
- With the CICS Explorer
it provides a powerful tooling environment that brings many facets of CICS system
programming to a single, modern dashboard. The environment can be shared with
complementary CICS tools,
including those commonly available from IBM partners.
- Through extensions to its TCP/IP support, CICS TS V4.1 continues to remove dependence
on SNA networking skills.
- Through new change management logging and support for identity propagation,
it provides greater accountability and auditability in an increasingly complex
environment.
CICS TS
V4.1 also offers performance improvements when compared against CICS TS V3.2.
These improvements have been observed in the areas of traditional workloads,
dynamic workload management, TCP/IP connectivity and XML processing.
These and many other new capabilities make it possible for IT departments
to "do more with less".
Key prerequisites
The minimum required level of operating system for CICS TS V4.1 is IBM z/OS V1.9 (5694-A01).
CICS TS
V4.1 has no conditional operational requisites.

209-141 IBM PowerVM and AIX software enhancements help you better
manage workloads
PDFAt a glance
IBM PowerVM and IBM AIX 6
provide additional flexibility and manageability.
- PowerVM Enterprise
Edition is enhanced with Active Memory Sharing, an advanced memory virtualization
technology.
- AIX 6
Technology Level 3 is enhanced to help you better manage workloads on IBM Power
Systems.
For ordering, contact your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner,
or IBM Americas
Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: YE001).
Overview
IBM PowerVM and
the AIX 6
operating system have been enhanced to provide additional flexibility and
manageability.
PowerVM,
providing industrial-strength virtualization for Power Systems, is enhanced
with PowerVM Active
Memory Sharing, an advanced memory virtualization technology that intelligently
flows memory from one partition to another for increased utilization and flexibility
of memory usage. With this memory virtualization enhancement for IBM POWER6 processor-based
servers, IBM i, AIX,
and Linux partitions
can share a pool of memory and have PowerVM automatically allocate the memory
based on the partition's workload demands. Active Memory Sharing is provided
with PowerVM Enterprise
Edition.
PowerVM Active
Memory Sharing supports over-commitment of logical memory with overflow
going to a PowerVM Virtual
I/O Server (VIOS)-managed paging device. For redundancy, two VIOS partitions
can be configured to the shared memory pool to provide access to the paging
devices. In addition, AIX and Linux partitions that use Active Memory Sharing
can leverage Live Partition Mobility to help improve resiliency and avoid
planned downtime.
Additional PowerVM enhancements
include:
- PowerVM VIOS
management enhancements
- NPIV support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 and the IBM Power 595
- Virtual tape support for IBM i and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11
- VIOS support for solid state drives (SSD), DS5000, XIV storage systems
- PowerVM Lx86
enhancements
AIX 6
Technology Level 3 includes the following enhancements to help you manage
workloads on Power Systems:
- SAN device support in workload partitions (WPAR): Clients can now add
SAN disks directly to a WPAR. The SAN device is accessed through a shared
SAN adapter in the global AIX instance. This allows for additional administrative
efficiency because the WPAR administrator can perform more storage management
operations without relying on the global instance administrator.
- IBM Systems
Director agent: The IBM Systems Director is the strategic platform management
solution for Power Systems servers. To provide for easier platform management
of Power Systems servers, AIX now includes the IBM Systems Director Agent and will automatically
install this agent when AIX is installed.
- Active
Memory Sharing support: AIX 6 Technology Level 3 includes support for the new PowerVM Enterprise
Edition Active
Memory Sharing feature to provide clients with even more flexibility
for virtualization.
Industrial-strength features and functions of AIX have been proven in a wide variety of
computing environments to meet the demanding requirements for vertically scaled
