The 450 GB 15,000 rpm disk drives can support up to 50% increased throughput and increased I/O operations per second as compared to similar size 10,000 rpm disk drives, to benefit transaction processing workloads.

Physical capacity for the DS6000 series is purchased via disk drives. A disk drive set contains four identical disk drives (same capacity and rpm). The DS6000 series now offers the 450 GB 15,000 rpm disk drives that are designed to provide additional price/performance and capacity flexibility to address specific application and business requirements. This support is in addition to the already supported 73 GB (15,000 rpm), 146 GB (10,000 rpm), 146 GB (15,000 rpm), 300 GB (10,000 rpm), and 300 GB (15,000 rpm) disk drive sets, as well as intermix of 73 GB, 146 GB, 300 GB, or 450 GB disk drives. The IBM System z10 Enterprise Class (z10 EC) server is designed to meet the challenges of today's business world and to be the cornerstone of an evolutionary new model for efficient IT delivery called the new enterprise data center. This model helps reset the economics of IT and can dramatically improve operational efficiency, security, and responsiveness - to help keep a business competitive.

The z10 EC, with its advanced combination of reliability, availability, serviceability, security, scalability, and virtualization, delivers the technology that can help define this framework for the future. The z10 EC delivers improvements to performance, capacity, and memory which can help enterprises grow their existing businesses while providing a cost-effective infrastructure for large-scale consolidation.

Today's announcements extend the z10 EC leadership with improved access to data and the network; tighter security with longer Personal Account Numbers for stronger protection of data; enhancements for improved performance when connecting to the network; increased flexibility in defining your options to handle backup requirements; and enhanced time accuracy to an external time source.

Any successful business needs to be able to deliver timely, integrated information to business leaders, support personnel, and customers on a 24x7 basis. This means that access to data needs to be fast, secure, and dependable. Enhancements made to z/Architecture and the FICON interface architecture with the new High Performance FICON for System z (zHPF) are optimized for online transaction processing (OLTP) workloads. The FICON Express4 and FICON Express2 features support the native FICON protocol and the new zHPF protocol simultaneously.

The System z10 was introduced with a new connectivity option for LANs - Open Systems Adapter-Express3 (OSA-Express3). Today we are announcing two new OSA-Express3 Ethernet features: 10 Gigabit Ethernet Short Reach complements the Long Reach feature and supports infrastructures with multimode fiber optic cabling while the 1000BASE-T Ethernet feature supports OSA-Integrated Console Controller (OSC), TCP/IP Layer 3 and Layer 2 (OSD), non-QDIO TCP/IP and SNA/APPN/HPR (OSE), and OSA-Express for NCP (OSN). Both OSA-Express3 and OSA-Express2 have protection from network intrusion with QDIO data connection isolation for z/VM virtualized environments.

An IT system needs to be available and protected every day. The z10 EC offers availability enhancements which include faster service time for CF Duplexing, updates to Server Time Protocol (STP) for enhanced time accuracy to an External Time Source, and support for heterogeneous platforms in an enterprise to track to the same time source. Security enhancements to the Crypto Express2 feature deliver new support for 13-, 14-, 15-, 16-, 17-, 18-, and 19-digit Personal Account Numbers for stronger protection of data.

The z10 EC has a new architectural approach for temporary offerings that have the potential to change the thinking about on demand capacity. The z10 EC can have one or more flexible configuration definitions that can be available to solve multiple temporary situations and multiple capacity configurations that can be active at once. This means that On/Off Capacity on Demand (CoD) can be active and up to seven other offerings can be active simultaneously. Tokens are available that can be purchased for On/Off CoD either before or after execution. The System z10 offers Plan Ahead Memory, giving users the option of planning for nondisruptive memory upgrades.

Updates to the z10 EC are designed to help improve IT today, outline a compelling case for the future running on System z, and lock in the z10 EC as the cornerstone of the new enterprise data center.

There are new terms governing System z Capacity Back Up (CBU) which allow you to execute production workload on a CBU Upgrade during a CBU test.

Further improvement to availability and flexibility is achieved with just-in-time deployment of capacity resources designed to dynamically change capacity when business requirements change. You are no longer limited by one offering configuration; instead one or more flexible configurations can be defined that can be used to solve multiple temporary situations. You can choose from multiple configurations and the configurations themselves are flexible so you can activate only what is needed from your defined configuration. Another significant change is the ability to add permanent capacity to the server when you are in a temporary state. These z10 BC enhancements are designed to allow you to take advantage of the technology helping to provide on-demand capacity more effectively. There are new terms governing System z Capacity Back Up (CBU) now available which allow customers to execute production workload on a CBU Upgrade during a CBU Test.

IBM continues the long history of providing integrated technologies to optimize a variety of workloads. Specialty engines have been available to help users expand the use of the mainframe for new workloads while helping to lower the cost of ownership. The z10 BC processor unit now delivers an integrated Hardware Decimal Floating Point unit to accelerate decimal floating point transactions. This function is designed to markedly improve performance for decimal floating point operations which offer increased precision compared to binary floating point operations. This is expected to be particularly useful for the calculations involved in many financial transactions.

Additionally, integrated clear-key encryption security features on z10 BC include support for a higher advanced encryption standard and more secure hashing algorithms. Performing these functions in hardware is designed to contribute to improved performance in a security-rich environment.

High speed connectivity and high bandwidth out to the data and the network are critical in achieving high levels of transaction throughput and enabling resources inside and outside the server to maximize application requirements. Overview

The IBM BladeCenter QS22 is based on the innovative multi-core IBM PowerXCell 8i processor, a second-generation processor based on the Cell Broadband Engine Architecture. Part of the IBM BladeCenter family of products, the QS22 blade is a high-performance blade that extends and deepens the IBM high-performance computing (HPC) solution portfolio by providing a new level of parallelism and performance to targeted workloads.

The PowerXCell 8i multi-core processor architecture helps the QS22 blade accelerate key algorithms such as 3D rendering, compression, and encryption. It enables companies to create and run highly visual, immersive, real-time applications. This performance offers significant potential benefit to companies in aerospace and defense, health care, life sciences, petroleum exploration, financial markets, digital media, electronics, government, education, and other industries.

The QS22 blade provides high performance in a small physical space:

IBM Communication Controller for Linux on System z (CCL) offers new options and new functionality for the global marketplace. Overview

IBM z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 (z/VSE V4.2) is built on a heritage of ongoing refinement and innovation that spans more than four decades. It is the latest step in the ongoing evolution of VSE. z/VSE V4.2 continues the z/VSE focus on scalability, security, interoperability, and service-oriented architecture. It is designed to help protect and leverage existing investments in VSE information assets. z/VSE V4.2 is designed to address the needs of clients with growing core VSE workloads and/or those who wish to exploit Linux on System z for new, Web-based business solutions and infrastructure simplification.

This announcement enhances the z/VSE Version 4 Release 2, Software Announcement 208-237, dated August 05, 2008. Changes are marked with "New:".

z/VSE V4.2 supports IBM System z servers:

  • IBM System z10 Enterprise Class (z10 EC)
  • New: IBM System z10 Business Class (z10 BC)
  • IBM System z9 Enterprise Class (z9 EC) and IBM System z9 Business Class (z9 BC)
  • IBM eServer zSeries 990, 890, 900, and 800

z/VSE V4.2 is designed to support:

  • Scalability enhancements:
    • Up to 512 VSE tasks (two times the 255 limit in z/VSE V4.1)
    • Up to 32 GB of processor storage (four times the 8 GB supported by z/VSE V4.1)
    • Parallel Access Volume (PAV) feature of IBM System Storage DS8000 and DS6000 series
  • Security enhancements:
    • Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) sign-on support using a new z/VSE LDAP client
    • IBM System z10 extensions to CP Assist for Cryptographic Function (CPACF)
    • New: IBM System Storage TS1130/TS1120 're-keying' function
    • Basic Security Manager (BSM) improvements
    • Encryption Facility for z/VSE V1.1 as an optional priced feature
  • Enhanced storage options:
    • IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) access to SCSI disks

z/VSE Version 4 executes in z/Architecture mode only and supports 64-bit real addressing for selected system functions. z/VSE V4 is not designed to support 64-bit virtual addressing or allow 64-bit addressing for user applications. z/VSE V4.2 can run in basic mode (z900 and z800 only), in LPAR mode, or as a guest under z/VM V5.2 or later. It is the preferred follow-on VSE product for clients with z/VSE V4.1, z/VSE V3, and VSE/ESA installed. You may choose to use the Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) process when migrating from z/VSE V4.1 or z/VSE V3.1.

z/VSE V4.2 offers Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC) pricing metrics, including a sub-capacity option, for System z10 EC, z10 BC, z9 EC, and z9 BC servers.

Overview

InfoPrint Solutions Company, a Ricoh-IBM joint venture, announces InfoPrint ProcessDirector, an extensible and configurable output-process management system that lets you start small and grow over time. InfoPrint ProcessDirector is a cost-effective, entry-level solution that can help you control and manage your transaction output processes. InfoPrint ProcessDirector enables flexible control of your print/mail production processes, helps enhance customer service, reduce errors, and lower costs.

The base functions of InfoPrint ProcessDirector include the ability to:

  • Receive files from z/OS using Download for z/OS or AFP Download Plus, by copying files to a directory defined as a hot folder, or from a command line print request (such as lpr) to the InfoPrint ProcessDirector LPD receiver
  • Manage print queues
  • Track the production process from receipt of the print file to final delivery
  • Use a file viewer to find the pages of AFP jobs that need to be reprinted
  • Interface with other application programs, such as
    • Third-party applications
    • User-written applications

An optional Secondary Server feature extends the base solution with additional capabilities:

  • Use secondary servers to extend capability by driving more printers.
  • Additionally, secondary servers can be used to run third-party applications that the customer wants to offload from the primary server. These applications can provide additional processing specific to the customer environment.
  • Workflow tasks can be tuned to run on any server in the system or only on specific servers.
  • The secondary server optional feature is required any time InfoPrint ProcessDirector is installed on a system other than the primary server.
  • The ability to set selected printing properties in a job ticket in the Job Definition Format (JDF).
  • The ability to interface with third party applications that use a hot folder to receive work and return results. Provided with this release of InfoPrint ProcessDirector is a step template that can be used to place work in another application's hot folder and monitor a user-specified directory for results.
  • The ability to specify halftones when converting color images from the continuous tones you see on a monitor to a printer's black and white shading pattern. Halftones are used by transform programs to tune output for the specific printer model you are using.
  • The ability to select cut-sheet printer options such as media size and type as well as finishing options such as punch and staple and schedule jobs based on these properties.
  • The ability to display printer status information using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and to invoke a printer-resident web page to drill down for up-to-the-minute status information
  • The ability to integrate with Web Services programs using a published Application Program Interface (API)

Starting with this version, four extensions that were previously available as services offerings are now orderable as product features. The new optional features are:

  • Reports: The ability to collect data about job events, user actions, and printers, then produce standard and user customizable reports for viewing or use in third-party analysis tools.
  • Service Level Agreements: The ability to control and record job check points to manage service level agreements that you may have with your customers.
  • AFP Indexer: The ability to create page groups and indexes in AFP files in order to create the data boundaries necessary to utilize advanced document management features life automated reprints, TransPromo activities, and postal optimization techniques.
  • AFP Editor: A visual tool that provides the ability to edit fully formed AFP for the purpose of adding barcodes composed of index values, job property values, and static text to hidden areas within the AFP file.
  • Secondary Server Upgrade: a discounted price for customers who already have an InfoPrint Manager license.

A minimum configuration for InfoPrint ProcessDirector AIX V1.3.1 is a pSeries® server with:

  • IBM AIX V5.3, Technology Level 5, Service Pack 4, or later
  • One or more 1.9 GHz, or faster, RISC processors
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM device
  • 4 GB, or more, RAM
  • Display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768
  • Connectivity to the LAN

Overview

IBM Software Development Kit for Multicore Acceleration V3.1 (SDK) includes a suite of tools, libraries, frameworks, and examples that improve the ability to develop and optimize applications and algorithms for IBM BladeCenter QS21 and QS22 blades. V3.1 of the SDK builds upon previous versions with new libraries and enhancements that can improve ease of programming and developer productivity, and enable greater performance of applications and workloads. In addition, it allows developers to plug in third-party ISV libraries to integrate with their solutions.

IBM SDK for Multicore Acceleration includes the following components:
