At a glance
Designed for enterprises that need to improve the cost effectiveness, flexibility, productivity, and availability of their storage infrastructure, the IBM® System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) hardware and software storage virtualization solution can help provide centralized, consistent management and operation of heterogeneous storage environments.
The SVC is designed to help users:
- Simplify their storage infrastructure and cut operation costs by combining the capacity from multiple disk systems into pools, which can be managed consistently from a central point
- Get more of their storage by improving utilization, automating provisioning, and by making your storage more accessible to host applications
- Help improve administrator productivity
- Avoid storage-related causes of application downtime, including data migrations
The SAN Volume Controller software and hardware is now enabled with a solution offering identifier to improve ordering and fulfillment of this storage virtualization system.

Overview
The IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller is designed to provide enterprises with the basis for a cost-effective, flexible, productive and highly available storage infrastructure. The SAN Volume Controller software and hardware now have associated solution offering identifiers to help improve product ordering and fulfillment. For additional information about using a solution offering identifier (solution ID), refer to the Reference information section.
The IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Solution is designed to incorporate specialized software, storage engines installed in pairs, a System Storage Productivity Center console, and UPSs. The IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller hardware configuration consists of a cluster of IBM 2145 servers, called SVC Storage Engines. Each SVC Storage Engine is a node; two nodes make up a node pair (I/O Group); up to four (I/O Groups) constitute a SAN Volume Controller cluster. The cluster is scalable from one to four node pairs (I/O Groups), and is supported by dual read/write cache. This design is intended to avoid single points of failure and support concurrent maintenance.

Key prerequisites
New orders of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Software (5639-VC5 or 5639-VW2) are shipped preloaded on new orders for the corequisite hardware (IBM 2145-CF8 or 2145-8A4). Both the hardware and a software license are a prerequisite of the SAN Volume Controller virtualization system.
This program requires at least one pair of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8 or 2145-8A4 storage engines with dual uninterruptible power supplies, and a System Storage Productivity Center for installation.
All new SAN Volume Controller installations require the System Storage Productivity Center (feature number 2805).
