  • DB2 DataJoiner can be used to mine non-DB2 relational data, including both read and write operations, thereby increasing Intelligent Miner's reach to enterprise data.
  • Print support is provided directly to printers — including network printers — for most visualizations, thereby improving communication capability.
  • Support for exporting to a comma-separated variable (CSV) data format allows users of other business intelligence tools (for example, spreadsheet tools) to further drill down and interpret the significance of mining results. Intelligent Miner supports the import of CSV data.
  • A new 'copy to clipboard' capability allows users to copy-selected output with its graphical characteristics to other business intelligence tools (such as spreadsheet products). This further increases communication to analysts downstream from the actual mining run.
  • Usability improvements to the user interface provide more intuitive usage, easier navigation, and better performance.
  • A fully documented example is provided to illustrate how users can share metadata across Intelligent Miner and Visual Warehouse Version 5.2 and invoke Intelligent Miner function from within the Visual Warehouse environment.
  • A fully documented example is provided to illustrate how some Intelligent Miner models can be exported to self-contained C code. This allows further deployment of models in any user application on any platform.
  • SAP Business Warehouse integration allows SAP users to mine Business Warehouse data using the Intelligent Miner for Data products.
  • SPSS and SPlus integration improve productivity during the data preparation stage by increasing data exploration and analysis functions available to Intelligent Miner users through one of these statistics packages. The implementation also provides an example of how other business intelligence tools might be seamlessly integrated at the glass.

Product Positioning

DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data products provide a wide range of industrial-strength mining technologies within an integrated tool suite to support sophisticated data mining as well as application services to support development of customized mining applications. Intelligent Miner for Data enables you to harvest valuable information from enterprise data sources and present that information to business users for analysis and decision making.

IBM is leading the way in helping users identify and extract high-value business intelligence from their data assets. Providing a new level of competitiveness and strategic decision-making power, this "mining" process is one of knowledge discovery and identifying hidden relationships, new trends, and previously undetected patterns hidden within a data store. Business managers, financial and fraud analysts, marketing managers, and a host of business decision makers are now better equipped to make more intuitive yet strategic decisions which ultimately affect a business' bottom line. Whether the problem is how to improve customer satisfaction, improve profitability, or reduce the risk of fraud abuse, the solution is the same — data mining using the DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data.

The Intelligent Miner features powerful mining algorithms supported by data processing, statistical analysis, and visualization facilities that enable analysts to discover patterns in enterprise data which would otherwise be unobserved. The Intelligent Miner algorithms enable analyses ranging from deviation detection, classification, and predicative modeling, to association discovery, sequential pattern discovery, and clustering.

For example, using a classification algorithm, a financial services company may be able to detect possible fraudulent usage of credit cards by examining deviations in the card usage patterns of its customers. Using predictive modeling, a retailer could forecast changes in customer buying patterns and keep abreast of comparisons of purchases over the Internet or through mail order with those through in-store buying.

Using Association Discovery, a supermarket chain could determine which products are most frequently sold in conjunction with other products, and stock these store items on shelves accordingly to maximize sales opportunities. An insurance company could use customer segmentation data to create target-marketing campaigns, or to cross-sell services among existing customers. Sequential Pattern analyses could help medical researchers identify common patterns of symptoms that lead to particular illnesses.

The Intelligent Miner also plays a central role in IBM's Business Intelligence Solution strategy.

DB2 Visual Warehouse: The DB2 Visual Warehouse provides a solid data infrastructure for mining enterprise data, and provides a comprehensive set of products to create, maintain, and administer a customer data warehouse. Data is cleansed and reconciled as the warehouse is implemented, resulting in a more reliable information base for mining. Warehouse metadata provides data analysts with critical information regarding the makeup and meaning of available data. DB2 Intelligent Miner for Data functions can be invoked from the Visual Warehouse environment. A key strategy for DB2 Intelligent Miner is to increase the degree of warehouse integration over time, encompassing data, metadata, and function sharing.

DB2 OLAP Server®: The IBM DB2 OLAP Server is an online analytical processing (OLAP) server designed for a wide range of multidimensional planning, analysis, and reporting applications. DB2 OLAP Server integrates the powerful Essbase OLAP engine and application programming interfaces, developed by Hyperion, with the IBM DB2 family of relational databases. The relational storage interface enables DB2 OLAP Server to store data directly into DB2 and other relational databases.

OLAP offerings have gained increased importance with the advent of data warehouses and advanced analytics. They allow users to query and analyze data to verify business hypotheses. Discovery driven mining tools extend the analysts' capabilities by enabling them to scan massive amounts of information and quickly determine associations, patterns, and trends which would previously have eluded them. The two approaches are complementary. Traditional and advanced decision support will continue to play a critical role in understanding, visualizing, and drilling-down to the detail required. Mining results may help users determine the dimensions and/or content of a multidimensional data store.

DB2 Universal Database (UDB): Mining operations can be performed directly against DB2 data. Parallel DB2 processing is also supported and can be leveraged in conjunction with parallelized versions of the mining algorithms for large-scale mining runs.

DB2 DataJoiner: IBM DB2 DataJoiner is the heterogeneous database solution for accessing data — IBM or non-IBM, relational or non-relational, local or remote — as if it were one database. Intelligent Miner for Data users have the option of mining data stored in a variety of data sources accessible by DB2 DataJoiner such as Oracle, Informix, and Sybase.

Mining Applications: Industry-specific mining application offerings leverage the benefits of mining by elevating access and analysis of mining results to be easily understood and applied by targeted business users or operational applications. Applications have been developed by IBM, customers, and IBM partners, and are becoming a primary vehicle for bringing the value of mining to the business community.

IBM Consulting and Services: IBM Data Mining Consultants, recognized in the industry as among the best, have deployed IBM mining technology in customer mining solutions worldwide, including customized versions applications to fit industry and customer requirements. IBM Consulting practices are organized to bring industry, data and text mining, as well as warehouse and database skills to bear on business problems such as customer relationship management, marketing, and fraud and abuse management. Resources are available to support all phases of a mining solution implementation, from conception through deployment.

IBM Partnership Programs: Partnership programs provide assistance and technical support to non-IBM ISVs, SIs, and VARs to develop and market data mining offerings which leverage Intelligent Miner technology.

Performance Considerations: The Intelligent Miner will support data mining against DB2 databases or flat files. To support a broader range of heterogeneous data sources, the use of IBM's DataJoiner® is recommended.

The performance of Intelligent Miner for Data for OS/390 Version 6.1 depends upon a number of system factors, primarily, but not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Amount of data to be mined
  • Data mining techniques used
  • Variables specified for technique execution
  • Whether flat files or databases are used for mining
  • The capacity of the computer system used
  • The number of parallel processes started

For parallel data mining, the Intelligent Miner for Data user can specify the number of parallel processes to be started using the GUI. The workload is distributed over the number of processors specified and the total processing time is reduced respectively. Both DB2 I/O parallelism and DB2 Query parallelism are exploited by Intelligent Miner for Data, thus considerably reducing the DB2 access times.
