Tivoli Inventory for OS/390® provides OS/390 server support for Tivoli Inventory Management (5697-INV). Tivoli Inventory for OS/390 and Tivoli Inventory Management (5697-INV) provide system configuration information that is vital to managing the enterprise. These programs can help streamline and accelerate program deployment, service desk, and asset management efforts.

Key Prerequisites

  • OS/390 Version 1 Release 3 (5645-001) or OS/390 Version 2 Release 4 (5647-A01) or higher
  • Tivoli Inventory Management (5697-INV)
  • Tivoli Management Framework for OS/390 (5697-D10)

For a detailed description of the hardware and software prerequisites, refer to the Technical Information section of this announcement.

Planned Availability Dates

  • July 30, 1999 (U.S. English)
  • August 6, 1999 (all other supported languages)

Tivoli Inventory for OS/390, in conjunction with Tivoli Inventory (5697-INV), gives you the system configuration information that is vital to managing your enterprise. Tivoli Inventory streamlines and accelerates software deployment, service desk, and asset management efforts. Following are some examples of how Tivoli Inventory might expedite your management efforts:

  • An administrator preparing to distribute a software upgrade automatically generates a list of systems worldwide that meet the new version's hardware prerequisites.
  • A help desk technician quickly analyzes recent configuration changes to an end user's malfunctioning system, and determines that a critical file has been inadvertently deleted.
  • To support a new accounting application's planned company-wide roll-out, a list of all obsolete servers is automatically generated to help ensure that they are replaced before the application is distributed.

Enterprise Inventory Management

Tivoli Inventory makes enterprise system configuration information readily available to the people who need it by allowing them to automatically scan each system for vital management information. This information is stored in one of many popular relational database management systems (RDBMSs), and Tivoli Inventory provides powerful facilities to exploit this data. Tivoli Inventory also enables frequent updates to help keep the database accurate when the environment is large and network bandwidth is at a premium.

Complete Standards-Based Scanning

Tivoli Inventory tells you exactly what is installed in your enterprise. It can detect thousands of commercial PC and UNIX® applications, and you can easily configure it to identify custom-designed applications. Tivoli Inventory also captures detailed information about system architecture, model, operating system and hardware. In addition, with Tivoli Inventory's easy-to-use facilities, you can prompt end users for information that cannot be scanned.

Tivoli inventory data collected by the scanner program is written to Management Information Format (MIF) compliant files. The MIF files will be parsed in a separate step to create statements for storing data on the relational database management system (RDBMS) storage.

Powerful Open Data Access

Once the system information is collected, Tivoli Inventory uses RDBMS technology and powerful facilities to provide you with open access to data, including:

Tivoli Management Framework Query Service: An easy-to-use GUI that constructs queries for systems that meet selection criteria, and designates the return data for these systems. Queries can be saved and edited for later use. Once the RDBMS tables are populated with data obtained from hardware scanning, queries can be used, to select groups of homogenous targets to be scanned (using Inventory profiles) for platform specific software.

Tivoli Desktop: Allows you to instantly view system configurations one at a time with a single mouse click.

Tivoli Inventory Published Data Schema: The data schema is published and ships with the product so that you can easily and fully exploit the powerful SQL reporting tools that you already use.

Tivoli Inventory is designed to help overcome the challenges associated with maintaining up-to-date configuration information on thousands of systems. RDBMS technology provides an industrial-strength data management engine to manage the enormous volume of information associated with large enterprise configurations. However, an enterprise-class solution must also perform frequent updates, so Tivoli Inventory enables you to:

  • Efficiently update only changes to the database after an initial scan.
  • Conserve network bandwidth and increase performance by locally scanning target systems.
  • Maintain centralized control of the system to update databases only when necessary. You can also perform hardware scans and software scans separately, and differentiate local scanning from central database updates.
  • Automatically scan your system at conveniently scheduled times. You can also configure automatic retries when designated systems are off-line or otherwise inaccessible at the time a scan is attempted.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

Euro Currency

This program is not impacted by euro currency.

Product Positioning

Tivoli Inventory for OS/390 is intended for customers who wish to use the OS/390 as a Tivoli Management Region (TMR) server for the distributed counterpart product Tivoli Inventory (5697-INV).

Technical Information

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: Tivoli Inventory for OS/390® will run on any IBM processor (or equivalent) that supports the required software.

Software Requirements

  • OS/390 Version 1 Release 3 (5645-001) or OS/390 Version 2 Release 4 (5647-A01) or higher, including the following elements:
    • OS/390 UNIX® System Services
    • OS/390 Language Environment/370 for OS/390 and VM
    • TCP/IP Services (OS/390 Version 2 Release 4 or earlier)
    • eNetwork™ Communication Server (OS/390 Version 2 Release 5 or later)
  • Tivoli Management Framework for OS/390 (5697-D10)
  • Tivoli Management Framework (5697-FRA)
  • Tivoli Inventory (5697-INV)

To fully use the Inventory application function a database is required:

  • When the Relational Information Management host is on the OS/390 Tivoli Management Region (TMR) server, DB2®/OS 390 Version 5 is required. The DB2 OS/390 Call Level Interface (CLI) must also be installed and operational.
  • When the Relational Information Management is on a non OS/390 managed node then the Tivoli Inventory (5697-INV) software database requirements apply.

Optional Software Requirements

  • Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390 (5697-F03)
  • Tivoli Software Distribution (5697-SWD)

Compatibility: Tivoli Inventory for OS/390 is compatible with Tivoli Inventory (5697-INV), for non-OS/390 endpoints and managed nodes.

Limitations: This release does not offer endpoint support for OS/390. An OS/390 system cannot be used as a target system for inventory, with the exception of scanning for a custom Machine Installed File stored on the OS/390 Tivoli Management Region (TMR) server.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced program uses the security and auditability features of the operating system software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
