Overview

The best systems management has gotten better. Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390® provides server support for OS/390. In conjunction with its distributed counterpart, Tivoli Software Distribution, (5697-SWD), it provides a robust framework of services and applications for the distribution and maintenance of operating systems, applications, and data across networks composed of workstations that run on a variety of software platforms. The server capabilities allow distribution of packages from OS/390 to non-OS/390 systems. As a Software Distribution server, OS/390 can be used as the source host and distribution can be initiated from a non-OS/390 system.

What Does This Mean to You?

  • Cost of deploying and maintaining systems management tools may be reduced.
  • Scalability for growing customers is increased.
  • Shipping is consolidated in predictable release cycles.
  • Multiple languages are supported.

Description

Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390, in conjunction with Tivoli Software Distribution, (5697-SWD), provides a robust framework of services and applications for the distribution and maintenance of operating systems, applications, and data across networks composed of widely distributed crossplatform systems. The server distributes packages from OS/390 to non-OS/390 systems. This OS/390 server can be used as the source host and distribution can be initiated from a non-OS/390 system.

The OS/390 server capabilities support the following software package distribution:

  • From an OS/390 server as a source host to non-OS/390 hosts
  • From a non-OS/390 host acting as the source host to non-OS/390 systems
  • From a non-OS/390 host acting as the source host to the OS/390 Tivoli Management Region (TMR) server

The distributed software "package", the entity to be distributed and installed on a workstation, may contain the following:

  • Directory names where the software is to be placed on the target machine, which can be created at the users discretion if missing
  • Names of procedures that can be executed on the target machine either before and after the software is sent
  • Names of procedures that can be executed on the source machine before or after the software was sent
  • A list of files that are to be distributed
  • Actual content of files

The creation of a package is a simple task that can be performed using either the product Command Line Interface, the package property graphical user interface (GUI), or the Auto Pack Control Center feature.

By using the Tivoli USERLINK for Software Distribution, end users using the workstation Web browser can download Software Distribution packages that are required, or that were not received in a prior distribution.

Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390 also provides a Command Line Interface that customizes the filepack content and initiates the installation procedure. The Command Line Interface can be executed from the server or from the Managed Nodes in the Tivoli Management Region (TMR) for further automation and flexibility.

Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390 supports AutoPack files created by the AutoPack Control Center feature (available from the distributed counterpart Tivoli Software Distribution (5697-SWD)). The Autopack Control Center, when installed on a Windows™-based machine, creates an AutoPack file that contains all the files necessary to install a "shrink-wrapped" application such as Microsoft™ Office 97 or Netscape Navigator. The AutoPack file also includes configuration scripts needed to perform system configuration changes on the client machine. Using Software Distribution for OS/390, the AutoPack file can be sent to client machines for application installation.

In addition, Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390 can remove software which is no longer needed on the workstations.

When used in conjunction with Tivoli Inventory for OS/390 (5697-F04), Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390 will automatically update the Inventory database with data on the distribution history. Users can keep track of licensing information and service update recipients. For example, if the user needs to install a service update on a group of workstations, a list of the workstations where the original software was installed can be easily obtained from a database query.

Tivoli Software Distribution for OS/390 can optionally send Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) Events to a TEC server in order to provide notification and automation management. For example, if the distribution fails for some of the targets, an event of Software Distribution type is sent to the TEC server along with the list of failing targets.
