This release of Tivoli Manager for MQSeries® for OS/390® Version 2.2, provides enhanced functionality and allows for compatibility to Tivoli Manager for MQSeries Version 2.2 for distributed environments, allowing management control of MQSeries for the enterprise from one desktop.
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries (5697-MQS) is a centralized management tool for IBM's MQSeries messaging and queuing middleware product. In June of 1998, IBM announced Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 (5697-D30), which extends MQSeries management from distributed platforms into the OS/390 environment. Refer to Software Announcement 298-198 , dated June 16, 1998, for details. Today's announcement strengthens that support for S/390®.
New in This Release
Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) Adapter for OS/390 support has been enhanced to enable NetView® event notification and automation in addition to or as an alternative to using the TEC server in the distributed environment.
Reduces Costs and Complexity
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries provides a high degree of management control of MQSeries while reducing the complexity and cost of deploying and administering MQSeries networks.
With Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390, the same benefits that customers using Tivoli Manager for MQSeries (5697-MQS) have experienced for distributed UNIX® and Windows platforms are available for MQSeries on OS/390 systems. For example, the Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 uses the same interface paradigm that is used in the distributed environment. This means that MQSeries networks that span the host and distributed environments can be managed in their entirety from one desktop, giving administrators a complete view of the application environment.
Enables Configuration and Event Management
With Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390, a system administrator can monitor, administer, and automate MQSeries tasks throughout the enterprise from a Tivoli desktop. Most important, the Tivoli Manager for MQSeries can correlate data from infrastructure components, such as network hardware, with other middleware and application events and present that information in the context of a specific business system.
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 allows MQSeries requests for information to pass from a managed node to an OS/390 system for execution. In addition to executing MQSeries commands, administrators can issue OS/390 commands or discover all occurrences of MQSeries queue managers on target OS/390 systems into the OS/390 environment.
For additional information on Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390, refer to Software Announcement 298-198 , dated June 16, 1998.
Planned Availability Date
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 Version 2 Release 2 enables the management of the MQSeries messaging and queuing middleware product in the S/390 environment. It facilitates the Tivoli Manager for MQSeries (5697-MQS) centralized management tool for MQSeries and allows it to manage not only across the distributed environment, but into the host environment as well.
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries is a centralized management tool for IBM's MQSeries messaging and queuing middleware product. It provides a high degree of management control of MQSeries while reducing the complexity and cost of deploying and administering MQSeries networks. The manager is tightly incorporated with Tivoli management platform and integrates MQSeries management with that of the underlying operating systems, databases, and networks, thus providing a comprehensive approach to applications management. Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 and Tivoli Manager for MQSeries spans the OS/390 and the distributed environment.
The management console is provided in the Tivoli Manager for MQSeries product and is supported only in the distributed environment. Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 brings three primary areas of MQSeries management to the S/390 environment:
The manager supports the definition and configuration of queue managers, queues, channels, and other MQSeries objects from a central GUI console and populates the Tivoli desktop with icons representing them. Different queue and channel configurations for different policy regions are easily created and distributed to the MQSeries network. In addition, the manager provides a "discovery" feature that automatically detects queue managers and their associated objects.
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries provides both in-band and out-of-band event monitoring to ensure the availability of MQSeries. In-band monitoring is achieved by monitoring MQSeries queue manager, channel, and performance events. These events are filtered according to users' preferences and the more critical events are forwarded to the central console for display and action. Out-of-band monitoring, which does not rely on MQSeries itself, is achieved by verifying the network path between the central console and all MQSeries servers, verifying the up-status of key MQSeries processes, and verifying the health of the Tivoli component processes. The queue managers' operational condition is displayed live at the management console.
Operation Management and Automation
All MQSeries administrative and operational commands are supported from the central console. In addition, the administrator is free to define new tasks and assign the appropriate level of security. Commands and tasks may be manually executed on multiple remote nodes via a single-action keystroke on the management console. Tasks can also be automated to run on a scheduled basis or as the result of an event or the correlation of several events. The built-in event correlation engine permits events from different sources, such as network routers and MQSeries channels, to be evaluated in context with one another for appropriate action. Rules can be defined to process and correlate these events and to take automated action based on predefined event conditions. A set of default rules provides a clear, accurate view of the MQSeries environment, consolidating events that span geographic distances and heterogeneous systems.
MQSeries management can be divided into domains based on business functions or geographic regions. This allows different management policies to be defined for MQSeries subregions. It also leverages the productivity of senior administrators by allowing less critical or routine operational tasks to be performed by more junior administrators.
Tivoli Manager for MQSeries for OS/390 Version 2 Release 2 provides the support to enable Tivoli Manager for MQSeries to manage MQSeries in the OS/390 environment. It requires Tivoli Manager for MQSeries (5697-MQS). Tivoli Manager for MQSeries provides the management console and the management functions to enable centralized management spanning the distributed and the host environment.
