Overview

Parallel Reorganization for IMS/ESA (R) (IMS (TM) Parallel Reorg) provides IMS customers a complete set of IMS performance utilities. These utilities can help customers to improve database availability and reduce service windows.

A Complete Set of IMS Utilities in one Package

IMS Parallel Reorg combines IMS performance utilities and its own data transfer service, Cross Memory Communicator (XCM), in a single product offering. Now all the performance utilities you need to reorganize Hierarchical Direct (HD) IMS databases are combined into a single package and enabled for parallel operation. No longer is there the need to order and pay for high-performance HD Reorganization utilities a la carte.

Improved Availability

The utilities in this package are enabled for stand-alone or parallel operations. Parallel operation means improved throughput and can translate into higher IMS database availability and a reduced service window.

Performance Utilities

The following high-performance utilities are included in the IMS Parallel Reorg package:

  • Unload
  • Reload
  • Index Builder
  • Database Scan
  • Prefix Resolution

Key Prerequisites

  • IMS Parallel Reorg is designed to operate in IMS/ESA Version 5 and Version 6 environments.

DESCRIPTION

Click to see picture of product.

The time has come to reap the benefits of parallel processing with IMS Parallel Reorg. IMS Parallel Reorg combines IMS performance utilities and its own data transfer service, Cross Memory Communicator (XCM) in a single product offering. Now all of the performance utilities needed to reorganize IMS HD databases are combined into a single powerful performance package. These high-performance utilities can be operated as stand-alone or in parallel using XCM data transfer services.

IMS Parallel Reorg includes:

XCM Subsystem

Cross Memory Communicator (XCM), transfers data between two jobs running in separate address spaces. IMS Parallel Reorg uses this service to pass data between the Unload, Reload, and Index Builder operations. By using XCM, the Unload, Reload, and Index Builder jobs can run concurrently without using intermediate data sets. Running the jobs in this overlapping fashion helps reduce overall clock time significantly and that leads to higher database availability.

XCM data transfer services are also used in the Prefix Resolution process to eliminate the Work File 2 (WF2) data set and associated I/O. This helps further reduce overall database reorganization time. Unload

The IMS Parallel Reorg Unload utility provides high-performance IMS database unloading. This utility features:

  • Reduced time for IMS database unloading

  • Unloading broken databases

  • Multiple standard formats for database unload data sets

  • User exit facility for additional segment processing

  • Statistical reports for database tuning

  • Parallel or stand-alone operation
Reload

The IMS Parallel Reorg Reload utility provides high-performance IMS database reloading. Features of this utility include:

  • Reduced time for IMS database reloading
  • Initialization of empty databases
  • Accepts standard format unload data sets
  • User exit facility for additional segment processing
  • Statistical reports for database tuning
  • Parallel or stand-alone operation
Index Builder

The IMS Parallel Reorg Index Builder utility provides all the features and functions of the IMS Index Builder (5697-C33) product and can be used concurrently with the IMS Parallel Reorg Reload utility to rebuild secondary indices. Features of this utility include:

  • Reduced time for creating/building secondary indices
  • Recovery of primary and secondary indices
  • Parallel or stand-alone operation
  • Avoids need to image copy database indices
Database Scan

The IMS Parallel Reorg Database Scan utility is a high-performance version of the IMS Database Scan utility. The utility is used to generate the Work File 1 (WF1) data set for input to the database prefix resolution process. The utility provides all the features and functions of the IMS Database Scan utility with reduced elapse time execution.

Prefix Resolution

Prefix Resolution is a required step for resolving pointers for databases containing logical relationships and for creating or recreating secondary indices. IMS Parallel Reorg Prefix Resolution performs the same functions as the IMS Prefix Resolution utility and the Database Tools -- Fast Prefix Resolution utility. Elapsed time is considerably shorter for the IMS Parallel Reorg Prefix Resolution since this utility utilizes XCM data transfer services to eliminate the intermediate Work File 2 (WF2) data set. This feature helps avoid much of the I/O, tape handling, and DASD requirements often associated with prefix resolution.

The IMS Parallel Reorg combines high-performance utilities and parallel operation into a powerful IMS database reorganization product. The IMS Database Control Suite (5697-D15), the front-end suite of the IMS tools environment, provides full support for IMS Parallel Reorg. IMS Parallel Reorg utilities can be used in place of the following products and IMS utilities.

  • Unload, replaces IMS Data Base Tools -- High Speed Sequential Retrieval(HSSR) feature (5685-093) -- (The HSSR Application Program Interface (API) is not included)

  • Reload, replaces IMS Data Base Tools -- Fast Reorganization Reload feature (5685-093)

  • Index Builder, replaces IMS Index Builder (5697-C33)

  • Database Scan, replaces IMS Database Scan utility (DFSURGS0)

  • Prefix Resolution, replaces IMS Data Base Tools -- Fast Prefix Resolution feature (5685-093) and IMS Prefix Resolution utility (DFSURG10)
IMS Parallel Reorg takes IMS reorganization processing to the next level of performance and can help you significantly reduce IMS database service window requirements. Now is the time to take advantage of IMS Parallel Reorg's powerful capabilities.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.
