Overview

Data Stream Tuner for IMS/ESA (R) (IMS (TM) Data Stream Tuner) provides 3270 data stream reductions for IMS network traffic. Reducing the length of the data stream transferred can lower demand on the network and help improve end user response times, resulting in better network utilization and lower costs. The product provides:

  • Compression of select 3270 repetitive characters

  • Nondisruptive activation

  • Exclusion tables to support node and transaction exclusion

  • Dynamic controls for setting options and gathering and reporting statistics

  • Problem determination facilities

  • An ISPF front-end
IMS Data Stream Tuner uses minimum system resources, is transparent to IMS applications, and attaches to IMS for interception of data streams rather than VTAM (R).

IMS Data Stream Tuner is designed to be a low cost aid to help improve IMS network traffic performance.

Key Prerequisites

IMS Data Stream Tuner is designed to support IMS/ESA Versions 5 and 6.

Planned Availability Date

DESCRIPTION

Data Stream Tuner for IMS/ESA (IMS Data Stream Tuner) provides 3270 data stream reductions for IMS network traffic. This product combines the IMS specific data stream reduction capabilities with its own data transfer and monitor services, Cross Memory Communicator (XCM).

XCM Subsystem

Cross Memory Communicator (XCM) provides:

  • High performance data transfer exploiting MVS/ESA (TM) cross memory services to communicate across address spaces without the need to be APF authorized.

  • A mechanism that lets monitor software products start in an address space that is to be monitored, without the need to reconfigure and restart address spaces (called Monitor Services). The main purpose of a monitor product is to provide system programmers and operators with:
    • Information about the monitored address space
    • A way to alter the monitored address space environment dynamically

IMS Data Stream Tuner

IMS Data Stream Tuner utilizes XCM capabilities to establish an infrastructure for monitoring and controlling IMS 3270 data stream traffic reductions. The product:

  • Facilitates compression of select 3270 repetitive characters

Repetitive characters commonly associated with IMS 3270 data streams are analyzed and compressed to help reduce 3270 data traffic. Data strings of spaces, nulls, asterisks, and dashes are evaluated and compressed. The strings are evaluated and compressed only where compression minimizes compression overhead and maximizes overall benefit.

  • Provides for nondisruptive activation

Product operation can be activated without interruption to the IMS subsystem.

  • Supports exclusion of user selected nodes and transactions

Exclusion tables are provided to deactivate processing for user selected node and transaction types. Wild carding is supported.

  • Provides dynamic controls for setting options and gathering reporting statistics

User specified controls and options are dynamic and easily changed through the use of the XCM enabled infrastructure.

  • Includes problem determination facilities

Node and transaction trace facilities are included to help identify possible network problems.

  • Provides an ISPF front-end

A complete ISPF front-end is provided to activate compression and operate product features.

IMS Data Stream Tuner provides basic IMS 3270 data stream compression coupled with IMS network monitoring capabilities that can help you reduce the cost of operating an IMS transaction network.

Year 2000

This product does not have date dependencies and is Year 2000 ready.
