Overview

How can the best systems management get better? By reducing the impact and cost of deploying and maintaining systems management tools, increasing scalability for growing customers, shipping in consolidated, predictable release cycles, and supporting multiple languages.

To do this, Tivoli is introducing Tivoli Management Framework 3.6 and is updating seven of its core applications and its toolkits. Tivoli Management Framework 3.6 exploits the Tivoli Management Architecture, an extension to the "classic" framework of Management Servers and Managed Nodes. It includes Tivoli Management Servers, Tivoli Management Gateways, and Tivoli Management Agents.

The Tivoli Management Architecture reduces the impact and cost of deploying and maintaining systems management tools through "install and forget" agents, the Tivoli Management Agents. The Tivoli Management Agents do not need to be constantly re-installed as they are self-configuring and self-updating. In addition, Tivoli is working with leading hardware and software vendors to bundle the management agent with their products.

All TME 10 (TM) products are being renamed to Tivoli. This change will give customers a single brand to focus on when planning their systems management strategy.

Tivoli plans to introduce future updates on a predictable, twice-a-year release schedule to help you plan your rollouts. Major applications will be available with the Tivoli Management Framework, so that you are not in constant update mode.

Tivoli Management Framework 3.6 and its core applications will be available initially in U.S. English, Japanese, French, and Brazilian Portuguese. Other languages will be available later in the year.

DESCRIPTION

Tivoli Management Framework 3.6 and seven of the core applications exploit the Tivoli Management Architecture. The Tivoli Management Architecture reduces the impact and cost of deploying and maintaining systems management tools through "install and forget" agents, the Tivoli Management Agents. The Tivoli Management Agents are small and dataless. Method executables are downloaded from the Tivoli Management Gateway as required. Tivoli is working with leading hardware and software vendors to bundle the management agent with their products.

The Tivoli Management Architecture increases the scalability of the Tivoli solution by significantly increasing the number of devices that can be managed within a Tivoli management region. And management-by- subscription still helps your staff manage a large number of resources with a minimum of steps.

With the new Tivoli Management Framework comes a number of changes:

  • TME 10 branded products being renamed

The Tivoli enterprise products will now be shipped under the Tivoli name, eliminating the TME 10 sub-brand. TME 10 is currently on all publications and some other materials. This usage will be replaced over time with the Tivoli brand name.

  • Additional functions in the core applications
    • Tivoli Software Distribution

In addition to distributing the new Tivoli Management Agents, Tivoli Software Distribution has improved reporting, including sending events to Tivoli Enterprise Console during distributions, updating the Tivoli Inventory database, and providing success or failure notification with time and date. Tivoli Software Distribution now has an improved Userlink, which includes a Web browser interface, a status bar and a file package size indicator to make it easier than ever to use.

The new level of Tivoli Software Distribution will no longer include these NetView (R) Distribution Manager components:

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for DOS

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for MAC

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for Sun OS

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for Sun Solaris

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for UNIX (R) System V (SCO and NCR)

      • Software Distribution Server for Sinix 3.1.2

      • Software Distribution Agent for Sinix 3.1.2
The following NetView Distribution Manager components are being removed from Tivoli Software Distribution, but are being replaced by Tivoli Software Distribution 3.1.x platforms:
      • NetView Distribution Manager/6000

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for AIX (R)

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for HP-UX

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for NetWare

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for OS/2

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for Windows (TM) 3.x

      • NetView Distribution Manager Agent for Windows NT (R)
    • Tivoli Inventory

Tivoli Inventory has been enhanced to include BIOS Scanning, which can provide information needed to determine Year 2000 compliance of your PC systems, an interface to the DMI Service Layer, if present, to retrieve additional information, such as serial numbers, and the ability to exploit AMS 2.0 to create software signatures and application profiles for AMS 2.0 compliant applications.

    • Tivoli Distributed Monitoring

The new level of Tivoli Distributed Monitoring includes basic monitoring of the Tivoli Management Agents, support for OS/2 specific monitoring, and minor upgrades to ARM agents.

    • Tivoli Enterprise Console

Tivoli Enterprise Console has been enhanced to support the Tivoli Management Agents, has new adapters, improved performance, easier customization and integration with Tivoli NetView 5.0, and supports two additional databases, DB/2 and Microsoft (TM) SQL Server. Now adapters created using Tivoli Event Integration Facility services allow secure communication through the Tivoli Enterprise Console gateway using an upcall to the gateway.

    • Tivoli Event Integration Facility

Tivoli Event Integration Facility has been enhanced to support the new level of Tivoli Enterprise Console and has a library for OS/390.

    • Tivoli User Administration

Basic user administration has been extended to the Tivoli Management Agents, there is new support for OS/390 via the Tivoli User Administration for OS/390 program (5697-ADM, refer to Software Announcement 298-321 dated September 15, 1998), and Tivoli User Administration now has immediate password propagation.

Tivoli User Administration also ships a Technology Preview CD, so users can see new functions, including the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) Connection and OnePassword, which is a Web-based password changing facility. These functions are for education and demonstration only and are not formally supported.

    • Tivoli Security Management

Basic security management has been extended to the Tivoli Management Agents. This enables Tivoli to manage the RACF (R) component of the OS/390 Security Server via Tivoli Security Management. The Tivoli Security Management for OS/390 program (5697-SCM) is required to manage RACF security. For more information on Tivoli Security Management for OS/390, refer to Software Announcement 298-323 dated September 15, 1998.

    • Tivoli Remote Control

The Tivoli Remote Control controller and target components are supported on the Tivoli Management Agent. Tivoli Remote Control also includes OS/2 controller support, security enhancements, and user enhancements.

    • Tivoli Application Development Environment

Tivoli Application Development Environment has been enhanced to support the new Tivoli Management Framework 3.6.

    • Tivoli Application Extension Facility

Tivoli Application Extension Facility has been enhanced to support the new Tivoli Management Framework 3.6.

  • New Gateway and Agents

Tivoli Management Framework 3.6 will have a Tivoli Management Gateway and a Tivoli Management Agent on OS/2, a Tivoli Management Agent on AS/400, and support for the OS/390 Tivoli Management Agents, to extend the reach of its management capability. The OS/390 Tivoli Management Agent is available through Tivoli Management Framework on OS/390 (5697-D10, refer to Software Announcement 298-322 dated September 15, 1998).

  • Support for multiple languages

The 3.6 level of these Tivoli products is multilingual; the language can be chosen at the time of installation. They now use UTF8 instead of ASCII strings for communication and can handle multi-byte characters.

Tivoli Management Framework 3.6 and its core applications will be available initially in U.S. English, Japanese, French, and Brazilian Portuguese. Languages to follow are Korean, Simplified Chinese, German, Spanish, and Italian.

  • Predictable release cycles

Tivoli plans to introduce future updates on a predictable, twice-a-year release schedule to help you plan your rollouts. Major applications will be available with the Tivoli Management Framework, so that you are not in constant update mode.

Year 2000

These products are Year 2000 ready.
