Overview

Today, IMS database administrators and system programmers must have in depth knowledge of IMS databases, utilities, and DBRC (database recovery control) to effectively deal with database serviceability issues. This same group generally uses manual and/or semi-automated processes and control procedures to manage IMS service and maintenance operations.

The IMS DB Control Suite can greatly enhance the performance of experienced database administrators (DBA's) and help new DBA's perform like seasoned professionals by providing a unique platform that interfaces to all the utilities needed to:

  • Backup databases

  • Recover databases

  • Monitor and reorganize databases

  • Manage IMS libraries

  • Perform miscellaneous utility functions
Improves Productivity and Availability

With IMS DB Control Suite, database administrators and system programmers can quickly setup processes to automate the day-to-day and exception management of databases. This automation helps to improve:

  • The productivity of database administrators and programmers

  • Database availability

  • The management of IMS resources

DESCRIPTION

The IMS DB Control Suite ushers in a new era of IMS Full Function database serviceability. Today, IMS database administrators and system programmers must have in depth knowledge of IMS databases, utilities, and DBRC to effectively deal with database serviceability issues. This same group generally uses manual and/or semi-automated processes and control procedures to manage IMS service and maintenance operations.

The IMS DB Control Suite can greatly enhance the performance of experienced DBA's and help new DBA's perform like seasoned professionals by providing a unique platform that interfaces to all the utilities needed to:

  • Backup databases
  • Recover databases
  • Monitor and reorganize databases
  • Manage IMS libraries
  • Perform miscellaneous utility functions
The IMS DB Control Suite provides a TSO front-end that organizes utilities by task and connects to IMS base, IBM performance, and third party tools and utilities. Additional functions are provided for on demand space monitoring of databases, improved usability of DBRC via an easy-to-use TSO interface, and VSAM repair operations.

How it Works

The IMS DB Control Suite acts as a focal point for all database service and maintenance operations. The IMS DB Control Suite is made up of Control Suite (CS) groups, which are related databases, database applications, or other groups determined by the user. The CS groups are defined in the SETUP process where all needed database information is collected and JCL built for future use to backup, recover, monitor, and reorganize databases and perform RECON maintenance.

During the SETUP process, the user selects the products for which JCL is to be generated. For example, the user may wish to use a non-IBM database unload product. The appropriate SETUP option is selected and JCL for that product is prebuilt for subsequent execution. All JCL generated is optimized for performance where possible.

The bottom line is, the IMS DB Control Suite can help database administrators and system programmers perform their daily database support activities in a more timely and effective manner. Maintenance activities can be performed faster, easier, and with fewer errors.

Benefits for Database Administrators and System Programmers

The IMS DB Control Suite lets the database administrator and system programmer:

  • Avoid input data redundancy.

Any time there is a change in the IMS DB environment (such as the addition of a new database, changes in naming conventions, data set definitions, or in storage allocations) JCL and control statements need to be modified. The IMS DB Control Suite greatly simplifies this task. The input to the change is specified in a single, easily maintainable data set, and the required JCL maintenance is performed automatically.

  • Minimize data entry.

Only data that cannot be extracted by the system from other sources (such as DBD, DDN, data set names, space allocations and some processing options) must be specified. Other required data (database organization, logical relationships, and record and key lengths) is extracted from the IMS DBD library automatically.

  • Benefit from full flexibility for naming conventions.

Although the IMS DB Control Suite requires certain standards regarding the naming of its own data sets, there is no restriction in the use of any naming structure you assign to IMS system data sets, database data sets, or job names.

  • Automate the generation of JCL for:
    • IMS base utilities
    • IBM performance utilities
    • Non-IBM utilities
In the past, JCL for database utilities (such as database recovery, reorganization, batch backout and pointer checker) had to be set up manually, required a high degree of skill, and was subject to errors. The IMS DB Control Suite automates the generation of JCL, reducing errors and eliminating the need for in-depth knowledge.

  • Easily create and maintain JCL skeletons.

The conversion of a conventional, manually controlled database recovery and control system into one managed by the IMS DB Control Suite is done efficiently and in a timely manner.

  • Utilize an interactive front end for the inquiry and maintenance of the RECON data set.

In DBRC, inquiry against the RECON data set is performed by issuing the LIST command. The resulting printed output must then be scanned for the appropriate data. Commands for RECON maintenance must be set up manually and incorporated into a batch job for execution. Finding the association between the various RECON records for a specific database can require advanced skills.

The IMS DB Control Suite greatly assists with these functions by providing a TSO front-end to DBRC.

  • Monitor database growth interactively.

The IMS DB Control Suite provides tools to monitor space utilization accurately and on demand. The space actually required by a database is shown in a format that helps you minimize space requirements and prevent out-of-space situations.

  • Interactively run the Library Management Utilities (utilities used for the management of DBD/PSB/ACB libraries).

  • Interactively run the VSAM Repair Facility (a utility used to correct errors in a VSAM data set).
The IMS DB Control Suite is a stand-alone product that uses only standard user interfaces and does not require APF authorization. It includes and replaces the Library Management (LMU) and VSAM Zapper Utilities of the IMS Data Base Tools product (5685-093). Take the mystery out of managing IMS databases and step up to the next generation of database management products that can help you gain the benefits of improved usability and performance.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

One-Time Charge: Customers who pay a one-time charge for a licensed program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no additional charge. Significant new function may be offered as an optional feature and charged for separately. If a replacement program is announced and the customer elects to license the replacement program, a time-based upgrade credit may apply.

Variable Charges: The applicable graduated one-time charge or graduated monthly license charge will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the licensed program is licensed for use. If the program is designated to a processor in a group for which no charge is listed above, the charge of the next higher group listed applies.

For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the then current charges between the two groups. For downgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will be no adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.

For upgrades or downgrades of monthly license charge licenses, the monthly license charge applicable to the higher or lower group will apply.

Entry Support License One-Time Charge: One-time charge authorizes use only on IBM Entry End User/390 machines.
