Overview

The IMS/ESA (R) Year 2000 Exit Tool can aid with your IMS (TM) Year 2000 conversion efforts. This program offering is designed to handle the proper sequencing of IMS database segments when date data is used as part of the IMS segment key. Date data is converted for proper segment sequencing and translated for transparent use with IMS applications.

The IMS/ESA Year 2000 Exit Tool is offered as an interim solution for the correct sequencing of date-keyed IMS segments beyond the Year 2000. Use of the product can help you avoid changing both IMS applications and database definitions to accommodate larger date fields.

This product was developed as part of a collaborative effort between IBM and Bellcore to help you address a specific Year 2000 challenge.

Intended Customers

IMS/ESA customers using dates as part of database segment key fields

Key Prerequisites

The IMS/ESA Year 2000 Tool is installed by System Modification Program (SMP/E) and supports IMS/ESA Versions 5 and 6.

DESCRIPTION

The IBM IMS/ESA Year 2000 Exit Tool for OS/390 (TM) helps save time and effort for those readying IMS applications for processing beyond the Year 2000. It offers an interim solution for the correct sequencing of date-keyed IMS segments beyond the Year 2000. Using the IMS/ESA Year 2000 Tool can help avoid changing both IMS applications and database definitions to accommodate larger date fields.

The IMS Year 2000 Exit Tool allows you to:

  • Identify IMS key field dates for special handling
  • Convert the dates identified for proper sequencing
  • Intercept and translate date data when accessed by an IMS application
The IMS/ESA Year 2000 Exit Tool code connects to the IMS Data Conversion Exit (DFSDBUX1). Databases using the exit must be unloaded without the exit code and reloaded with the exit. Once implemented, dates can be sequenced properly. This process is transparent to IMS applications. This means that IMS applications will be able to retrieve and insert date-keyed segments in the desired order. Since the view of the key data by the application remains unchanged, those applications requiring the display of four digit year data or performing calculations using dates may still need to be changed.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the 20th and 21st centuries, provided all other products (for example, software, hardware, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

The maintenance end date for this Year 2000 ready product is June 30, 2001.
